We regularly market at the Kaka'ako Farmers Market and are happy to say that although we have…read moreestablished favorite vendors, we continue to FIND new vendors with great artisanal products to try. This past Saturday, while roaming about the farmers market after getting a green smoothie ('Ōma'o Man) and checking out the fresh omusubi (The Rice Factory), we came across Roscoe's Sourdough. What caught our eyes at Roscoe's Sourdough was the fabulous display of their fresh baked sourdough breads. The loaves of bread ranged in flavors, shapes and prices ($5 - $10). The appealing factors of Roscoe's Sourdough were their impressive crisp crust, beautiful "bloom" (color) and crumb. Especially attractive to me, at the time, was their Olive-Garlic focaccia square priced at $5 (mainly because we hadn't eaten breakfast yet). second loaf that attracted me was called "Da Purps" which has the purple Okinawan sweet potato listed as one of its ingredients. However, I didn't want to get ahead of myself so only purchased the focaccia. I didn't get to chat with the woman behind the table as she and another woman were having a conversation so I wasn't able to get any background information about the baker or his business. However, I did only interrupt to ask to purchase a square of focaccia. She was friendly and smiley as she packaged a fresh square of focaccia into a plain brown paper bag. We rushed home to tear into some of this sourdough focaccia. Its mild sourness complemented the roasted sweet garlic and olive oil. The focaccia was delicious at room temperature as its chewy yet airy structure made for a great mouthfeel. I did think about lightly toasting the focaccia and smearing it with some butter or dipping it into an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. Instead, I cut the square horizontally to make 2 squares while sautéing mushrooms, onions and garlic as a topping. I then topped each focaccia half with the mushroom mixture, sprinkled feta cheese atop and toasted the focaccia until the cheese melted and focaccia was warmed through. In short, the warmed sourdough focaccia tasted better than its room temperature version. I can't wait until next Saturday to try a loaf of Roscoe's Da Purps or maybe the classic O.G.

And now that their retail location is open for walk-in business, makes it that much more fun to see, hold, ponder on all the goodness in this store. I mean, innovative ice cream treats... yummie drink specials... crispy beef jerky..! This day I impulsively stopped in while I bought food provisions at market down the street. Love how the crispy jerky comes in three different sizes with the largest size being best deal per ounce. Smallest broken bits slightly discounted. So of course I had to get a few bags of the largest size of my favorite: oxtail soup flavored. Got confused when sampled a bit of the butter garlic yaki... yep a few bags of those! And a variety of other newer flavors. Also walked out with a bowl of their most delicious yakiniku over rice, a newer item. Wholey moley batman, was this delicious! Was that butter in the rice?! And topped with corn and kimchee... perfect balance of flavors. Had such a nice visit with David who came out from the back production area and Chad who was manning the front of the store. And got to meet Faith and Erin too (?). They truly showed me so much aloha. Even gave me some samples of new receipes they are considering. Hint: butternut squash; sooo yumm! Much thanks for making my day and bringing a little sunshine into this Aunty's otherwise cloudy and rainy weeks. I saw (on Instagram) that Aloha Tofu Factory was celebrating their 75th Anniversary by selling Tofu at the factory for 75 cents a block! Wow! What a great deal! However, I didn't want to stand in line with the crowd. Later, I saw an Instagram contest where the prize was a gift card, a special bottle of ponzu sauce, and a commemorative bottle of soy sauce from Aloha Tofu Factory! The prize also included a gift card from Restaurant Suntory and hi_grindz. Wow! What a great package... And I won it! Thank you so much! It was an educational experience because I found out where the factory is and that they not only have soft and firm tofu available for sale, but they also have merchandise and fresh soy milk! I bought pens, towels, and note pads! The packaging is so clever! Service was efficient, polite, and friendly! This is such an authentic local business with Aloha Spirit! I waited 15 minutes before the worker arrived. They had the crispy beef jerky in three flavors: teriyaki, umami and original. It was pretty pricey. I got two bags of the teriyaki; one to send to my mother in law in her box for Mother's Day and one for me to try. They were $14 each for 2oz. bags. I've had crispy beef jerky before from other brands that were actually crispy. This was not it. These were hard and chewy even though they were thinly cut. All three flavors are made with oyster sauce. I read it on the packaging. Yes, I read for once, lol.
