Shopping in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawai'i... Aloha Tofu is a popular grocery item - I buy this product at local stores, and it's always consistently fresh and reliable. I saw (on Instagram) that Aloha Tofu Factory was celebrating their 75th Anniversary by selling Tofu at the factory for 75 cents a block! Wow! What a great deal! However, I didn't want to stand in line with the crowd. Later, I saw an Instagram contest where the prize was a gift card, a special bottle of ponzu sauce, and a commemorative bottle of soy sauce from Aloha Tofu Factory! The prize also included a gift card from Restaurant Suntory and hi_grindz. Wow! What a great package... And I won it! Thank you so much! It was an educational experience because I found out where the factory is and that they not only have soft and firm tofu available for sale, but they also have merchandise and fresh soy milk! I bought pens, towels, and note pads! The packaging is so clever! Service was efficient, polite, and friendly! This is such an authentic local business with Aloha Spirit! I'm so happy to have found this clean, bright, and cool place! I look forward to returning and getting more gifts here!

Happy Aloha Tofu Day... Indeed it is as they celebrate their 75th anniversary and what a generous way than to offer their with a limit of 5 per person Soft and Firm tofu for $.75 each and as a tofu lover I just had to try my luck as the location for Aloha Tofu is in Kalihi on a little street Akepo Ln and they do have a few parking stalls for convenience as there's just about no stalls in the surrounding area. As the cars start piling in I did get lucky as a couple of cars was leaving. The shop entrance is on the left side of the building and to no surprise there was a giant line though the staff was working hard to keep the vibe moving as one grabbed bags that many had brought and took our order as mine was four soft tofu and if you read their instagram if you show them you follow them you get a gift which was a fan and sticker. I can't believe it's been 75 years and going strong and knowing how easy it is to pick up many of their products and merchandise is amazing and so are their tofu. Thank you!

Fresh tofu and more at Aloha Tofu factory! There are good reasons Aloha Tofu has been in business for 75 years: great products and friendly service make customers return. Glad that we were able to join them and many loyal customers in their anniversary celebration! Though I've purchased Aloha Tofu in retail stores, nothing beats factory fresh! We've been back since and happily support this local business! Here's to tofu and good health!!! #supportlocal

Found out from the morning news that Aloha Tofu was celebrating their 75th anniversary...they were selling their soft and firm block of tofu for $.75 each. I was planning to pick up Okara (soy pulp) so I looked at my husband and said "Let's go!" When we arrived, there wasn't any parking in their small lot so I was dropped off and stood in a long line with around 40 to 50 people in the hot sun...I need an umbrella! While waiting, 2 people were leaving the parking lot so I called my husband. He made it just in time to get a stall. Yay, I got my umbrella! Stood in hot sun with hardly any breeze for over an hour, bought a total of 10 soft and firm tofu and 2 lbs. of Okara. Was it worth it? Yup! We eat Aloha Tofu's tofu almost every night with either shoyu or Nametake Mushroom so will enjoy this for 3 weeks, saved about $25 and will be able to make my Okara patties! I know the workers had a hectic day with non-stop orders but they were still pleasant, helpful and smiling just before closing...awesome! Thank you Aloha Tofu for the generous special and Happy 75th Anniversary and many more years to come!

    Okara Sugar Cookie is amazing!

I wanted to spotlight Aloha Tofu's Okara Sugar Cookie that they sell at the factory. They make the "flour" out of okara (a by-product of tofu) to make this cookie. It's chewy on the inside and crunchy on the outside with a lovely dusting of sugar on top. I really really like this cookie! Give it a try!

    So 19 oz. Soft Tofu

Looking for Hawaii's best tofu and tofu products? Look no further than. For over 75 years the Uyehara family have been crafting Tofu, Natto, and other amazing products. Here's a pro tip if you're looking for tofu or any product they make you can call ahead and reserve your product of choice. I can tell you from personal experience they make the best Natto anywhere. I compare them to the ones from Japan and Aloha. Tofu factory definitely makes the best.

Since the mid-1980s, we've attended Honolulu's Okinawan Festival annually except during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, and this year, because I'm busily healing from total knee replacement surgery. However, our attendance doesn't stop our appetites from enjoying our favorite Okinawan dishes and rich culture with my husband's late sister's in-laws. My culinary interest in Okinawan food grew after I met one of my former culinary arts professors, who was Okinawan. I learned that Okinawan cuisine is a unique blend of traditional ingredients, including tropical fruits from the Ryukyu Kingdom, and cultural cooking techniques influenced by trade with China, as well as the post-World War II Americanization. However, we became more aware of and intrigued by the iconic Okinawan cultural staple, Jimami tofu, after seeing a HIFF movie in 2017. Luckily, Aloha Tofu had a retail store near the theaters, so we rushed over to sample it, and we were hooked! Even my late sister's-in-laws didn't know about the seasonal (during the Okinawan Festival) availability of Aloha Tofu Factory's jimami tofu. They said they only got to taste it during family trips to Okinawa or Japan. So, what is Jimami tofu? Unlike tofu, which is made from soybeans, jimami tofu gets its nutty flavor from peanuts. The peanuts are soaked in water and then blended, resulting in a nut milk. The nut milk is then heated and thickened with a starch (unlike the process of making regular tofu) and allowed to cool until it gets a soft and jiggly consistency. Aloha Tofu Factory serves the jimami tofu with a savory, thickened soy sauce, brown sugar, and hondashi sauce, which enhances the peanut flavor. During our last trips to Japan, we discovered the peanut tofu in Kagoshima, known as "dakkisho tofu," which was topped with either salty umeboshi (salty pickled plums) or soy sauce. In Nagasaki, the dakkisho tofu was topped with yuzu zest, fruit, or miso paste. I think the dakkisho tofu could be served as a dessert with a sweetened soy sauce or blackened sugar syrup and grated ginger. The Japanese peanut tofu or dakkisho tofu seemed to be more refined and softer than the Okinawan jimami tofu. Still, Aloha Tofu Factory sells its Jimami tofu in disposable paper ramekins at $5 each. During the run of the Okinawan Festival, a discount is offered, and it's best to pre-order this specialty, as it is only made on certain days. Since I pre-ordered the jimami tofu, I also ordered a large (64 oz) tub of yudofu 湯豆腐 or soft hot tofu, which I likened to the Chinese silken tofu pudding dessert 豆腐花. Although the yudofu's consistency wasn't as custard-like as I expected, it was still a great substitute. I split the container with my eldest sister, who also served it chilled with fresh berries with a ginger-infused simple syrup. The factory worker who retrieved my pre-order was friendly and kindly offered me recipe cards. I asked him how he usually eats the yudofu, and he surprised me by saying he eats it warm, accompanied by ponzu sauce, finely chopped green onions, grated radish, or ginger. I surprised him by saying I'm eating it chilled with fresh fruits. Anyway, the factory was easy to locate down a one-street (Akepo Lane), the service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the tofu. We've returned to purchase yudofu, natto, and aburage since we're usually in the Costco-Iwilei area.

    today special until noon

Staff was friendly. Person in front of me explained what some of the items are. Can also order online. Today special - 75 cents for soft or hard tofu - I also purchsed yudofu - soft - spooning tofu - large container. Small parking lot. Looks clean and neat. Has display counter.

Love doing my shopping @ Aloha Tofu Factory. They have so many of my favorite home food products. And they are so convenient as they are located right off of N.King Street on Akepo Lane. Onside parking in their private lot. When I pulled in this morning I was the only one in the lot. When I left there was a car on each side of mine. That's how popular shopping @ the tofu factory is! My dear nephew who makes his own, turned me onto the delicious and healthy eating of natto. Aloha Tofu makes their own and... I just can't get enough of this fresh goodness! Sold in a two pack for just over $3. Best place to get tofu and tofu products. Next week is Chinese new year and noticed there is a special on the fried tofu (aka: aburage) which is commonly put into Chinese new years jai. BUT you gotta get your fried tofu and other Aloha tofu goodness fix today as they will be temporarily closing for a week, starting tomorrow! Much thanks to the Aloha Tofu family who has been serving our community in various locations (still miss their restaurant previously located @ the Dole Cannery). #support local

Very cool experience coming to the factory. They have a walk up window where you can buy an assortment of tofu products. The prices were very fair and service was also very friendly. The yudofu was so fresh and soft! Glad I got to try this and will be a repeat customer. :)

Delicious soy milk! They're finally open for business again after shutting down for a month! The soy milk was as fresh as you could get. They bagged it up for me hot in the gallon bag after ordering! I also tried their tofu and fried bean curd before. Amazing quality of food. They have their products on Farmlink Hawaii for sale too! Support local and tofu products!

Came here with one mission: fresh soy milk! Me and hubby have been searching for fresh soy milk, the real deal not the American kine. When I talked about this with coworkers about this one of them casually said "just go to aloha tofu factory " . And everyone seem to know about and love this place! Look at all the great reviews here! When we came here for the first time we were not so sure if we were at the right place because it's located in a narrow alley with no obvious storefront or sign. There's a small parking lot which aso looked like a loading dock so we weren't sure if we could park there. But whatever, for the soy milk! When we walked into the side entrance there's a small area for customers to order their food, maybe 3 feet x 6 feet? And from there you can see the huge factory inside with workers swiftly moving things around, operating those gigantic machines. What a fascinating scene! Anyway we got our half gallon soy milk for $6.35. It's more expensive than silk soy milk but the quality worth every extra dollar we pay. Now they have 2 more loyal customers who for sure will come back regularly! Business hours: 7am-12pm on Sun-Tues, Thurs and Fri: 7-10:30am on Wed and Sat. No soymilk and yudofu on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Cool factory! Everything you're getting is pretty much fresh off the line.

And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Today, Hawaiian Chip Company uses only the highest quality Okinawan sweet potatoes and taro grown on the Big Island and Oahu's North Shore and golden sweet potatoes grown on Molokai to make their gourmet chips. This assures only the freshest and highest quality chips that they can produce. They also use canola oil (trans-fat free) and minimal amounts of sodium, and are preservative-free. The Hawaiian Chip Co.'s has expanded its product line over the years and offers the following: * Taro and sweet potato chips mix. Combine earthly richness of taro with the subtle sweetness of Okinawan and golden sweet potatoes of five flavors of hand-peeled, thinly sliced chips that are lightly seasoned: original (lightly salted), zesty garlic, Kiawe BBQ, Kiawe Fire, and sugar coated. * BBQ and hot sauces. The Kilauea Fire BBQ sauce was introduced in 2008, which has a spicy kick and great as a marinade for beef, chicken, pork; can be used as a dipping sauce. The Kilauea Fire Hot Sauce is spicier and less sweet than the Kilauea Fire BBQ Sauce. You can get this exact item at a lower price in their showroom, plus it may be fresher. For home snacking, I love their Bits of Chips, a mixture of whole chips and broken pieces that are sold at a discounted price. They are not always available, as it depends on when the chips are available and made. It is suggested to call the store to inquire if there are any available. A chef at Ginza Kyubey -- one of Tokyo's most revered sushi institutions -- was once asked why…read moresushi is considered among the world's greatest foods. His answer: the ultimate deliciousness is achieved when you bring out the natural flavor of an ingredient, and sushi does the bare minimum to alter what's already at peak freshness. Hawaiian Chip Company operates by that exact same creed, and they've been doing it quietly since 1999. Their Okinawan sweet potatoes come from the Big Island and Oahu's North Shore, and the golden sweet potatoes are grown on Molokai. These aren't commodity ingredients -- they're sourced with intention. Each variety is sliced paper-thin and fried to order, and the result is a chip so delicate it almost dissolves, while still delivering a clean, distinct flavor that tells you exactly which potato you're eating. The taro tastes like taro. The Okinawan sweet potato has that gorgeous purple-fleshed earthiness. The golden sweet potato is subtly sweet and buttery. Nature does the heavy lifting here. There's a whole lineup of powdered seasonings to explore -- Zesty Garlic, Cajun, Maui Onion, Furikake, barbecue -- and they're genuinely fun. But try a plain chip first. You'll understand immediately why they don't need the seasoning. Pro tip: Come on Saturday. The Saturday experience unlocks kalua pig sliders, Island Brew beverages, and gelato/sorbet made with local fruits. Pair a warm bag of taro chips with a kalua pork slider and a tropical tea, and you have one of the most underrated snack experiences in all of Honolulu. This is a place that respects its ingredients. In a world of artificial flavors and over-seasoned everything, that's quietly radical.

Grocery shopping in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii…read more.. Cooking healthy soups - especially for the kupuna (senior citizens) at church - has been my new hobby. I've been browsing through The Marketplace at City Square for inspiration. I visit the various produce vendors and look at their fresh veggies. From long beans and taro, to squash, carrots, and bok choi, I try to get the freshest ingredients. That's why Island Green Produce caught my attention. Located next to Chuck E. Cheese, this produce vendor is on the right side of the entrance as you walk through the door. Besides having papaya at 79 cents per pound, Island Green Produce had certain items pre-packaged. They seemed more sanitary - especially the kabocha (pumpkin), which was peeled and cut! I thought, "Wow... that's really convenient!" The friendly, efficient cashier weighed and put my bag of kabocha in a bigger bag. Thank you! I can't wait to add fresh kabocha to my soup! It's colorful and tasty! I'm sure that everyone will appreciate a hot soup on a chilly 67°F January evening in Honolulu!!

We came to look around and ended up buying all kinds of fresh, sweet and juicy fruits. From pineapples to green mangoes, ripe yellow mangoes, papayas, dragon fruit and others. I bought the fruits and took them to my hotel and had them for breakfast each day for the week! Every vendor owners was super nice. You can use any type of payment (cash, credit, Apple Pay). I would come back here again for groceries next time I visit Oahu. It's such a chill place compared to a city in mainland. Please keep growing sweet & juicy fruits!

There was one employee working at the register and another in the back. The service was attentive and efficient although there was only one person on the floor. They carry a great assortment of mochi and manju, including some varieties that need to be refrigerated. In addition, they offer local favorites like li-hing gummy bears and assorted flavored sembei, giving you plenty of sweet and savory options to choose from. The employee at the register was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, happily sharing information about the different mochi flavors and offerings. Most importantly, the mochi here is absolutely delicious. During this visit, we ordered a Girls' Day pack and tried the chocolate ganache Oreo flavor which was amazing. The mochi was perfectly soft and paired beautifully with the rich chocolate ganache filling. My friend loved it so much that she went back the very next day to order more! If you love mochi, you really need to stop by. I highly recommended this shop.

After reading John N.'s review of this place earlier this month and because I do most of my produce…read moreshopping in Chinatown I just had to check this place out. As the stereotypical Chinese I want things fresh and cheap. Yikes, not sure if that was phrased properly........ Okay, let's start again. When shopping there are 2 factors for me: freshness and economical. And now that we are more conscientious of our health organic is the way to go. So when you factor those 3 together, B I Farm is the place to shop. Located in the far back stall of Maunakea Marketplace (as you enter from the doors that are facing North Hotel Street) B I Farms have their harvest on tables nicely displayed with handwritten prices. In the handful of times I've shopped here the produce are fresh and alive - - when you pick up a bunch of veggies they are not wilted and dried out. They mostly carry vegetables but do carry some fruits (bananas and papayas) depending on availability. As mentioned in John N.'s review, you need to come here early because they get "raided" by the regulars who shop here. Unfortunately, I usually don't make it to Chinatown until after 9am so I pretty much select from their "leftovers". So for you shoppers who are looking for fresh and cheap......I mean, if you're looking for freshness, economical and organic - - then this is the place for you. NOTES: 1) Typical Chinatown parking. You need to either find meter parking or at the municipal lots. With the police substation nearby, I don't recommend you to park on the streets because there are MANY loading zones and you'll get ticketed if you park in these areas. 2) CASH only. 3) They are open daily but keep in mind that Maunakea Marketplace is closed on some MAJOR holidays and when this happens, the gates are closed so vendors and stalls are also closed.

Farms is on Hotel street, right past the bus stop. Try them out! You won't regret buying your vegetables for $1.00 from there. I love making stir fry with all the produce I get there!
