I'm driving along and all I keep seeing are Jimmy John's franchises. I'm in the mood for a chicken breast on a pita. I am getting a little nervous as I hit the Cary border and I haven't noticed a likely fit for my culinary craving. I should have opened my Yelp app, but I had resigned myself to eating later if something didn't jump out at me on my immediate route. Before you knew it, there was Kojaks. We pulled in the parking lot and I couldn't tell from looking at the building if they were open. But there were cars in the lot, so we walked in. Everyone working there was very nice. The gal who took our order even made suggestions when we asked her opinion. We went with chicken on a pita and gyros. Both came with a side of fries and a medium drink. We also added on the kickin' chicken soup since the picture looked so good once I started to breeze through the Yelp photos. There was a fair amount of seating, so we had our choice of spots to dine-in. The food didn't take very long and everything was served piping hot just the way I like it. Especially the soup! The pita bread was really fresh! The chicken was chopped into small pieces and it was cooked nicely, but it had absolutely no seasoning. I tried the gyros and they were very good. The strips of meat were nicely cut and not hacked up. Consistent seems to be an appropriate word to describe the piece of meat. The tzatziki sauce was one of my favorites ever! I had one bite of it and it was really, really good. This was seasoned and had some garlic notes. It was a great sauce! The soup...I love soup. This soup had highs and lows. Highs were the giant - I mean seriously too big for the spoon - pieces of chicken breast. There was more than one chicken chunk like this and I was pleased. The noodles were not overcooked, so that also ranked high. But, there were large red bell pepper chunks that were unexpected and not appealing to me as well as the use of red pepper flakes to add a sense of heat to the broth. It took away from what I thought could be a very tasty soup. A friend was working nearby and he wanted hot dogs, so we grabbed the two dog deal which came with fries and a medium drink. The total was $7.48 for the hot dog special. This does not seem reasonably priced for what it was. The fries here are nothing special. Frozen, not fresh cut. The hot dogs and buns were average. Overall, it was fine, but I can't say that I would seek them out again. read more

If you want a waist friendly place then please move on. Now if what you really want is hot, fresh, yummy OMG I can't do this every week food then this is the place for you. My family is in the process of moving to the area and we're eating out a bit more than normal. Right now fast food fits the bill. This place, with REALLY tasty fast food fits the bill perhaps too well. The Gyros are fresh and juicy. The fried mushrooms are standard, but the Italian beef - the heavens parted and the angels sang - well you get the idea. Add to that friendly cheerful staff who actually appear to enjoy going to work and you have a very positive experience. I'm kinda sorry this place is actually so close. Love this place. I eat here about once a week. I usually get the Gyro but I have tried pretty much everything the menu has to offer. The staff is super friendly and always makes you feel welcome. The food quality and speed is amazing! I would always recommend this place. Got a lot of different items on the menu. My favorites are Gyro, Chicken Gyro, Italian Sausage, and Dollar Dog Mondays! I, however, am not a fan of their Italian Beef, I do not recommend it. It doesn't have enough flavor. (Go to Portillo's in Crystal Lake for a good beef). Always a great time and great food! Kojak's has good food and a huge variety. There may be better hot dogs, beefs or gyros out there at different establishments, but collectively Kojak's is hard to beat. Great for the mom or dad whose family likes different things for dinner - you can get them all here and leave knowing that you'll enjoy a good meal. There's only one other place like this in the area (Mr Beefy's) and it doesn't compare. Now, ordinarily I wouldn't give a hot dog stand five stars - realistically hot dogs ARE hot dogs and there's not that much difference between them. However, where Kojak's earns its fifth star is their support of the community. They sponsor high school groups and youth teams. And they were very supportive of an event supporting area non-profits that I was involved with, so I've seen their graciousness first-hand. Bottomline - any place that offers good food and generously steps up to support the community they do business in will always get my business. By the way, Brunch Cafe in FRG is operated by the same ownership and also actively supports the community. read more

I've only been here a few times and have only had the dogs. This is kind of a plain looking place right past the big curve in downtown Cary. In fact, I'd driven past it for years and never even noticed it. But, I did notice it and one day stopped in. The bottom line is: they have some seriously good dogs, made the right way, and pretty decent fries to accompany them. The family that owns and operates this place really cares about their customers and takes the time to get to know your name if you allow them to. I am always greeted with a smile and hows your family doing? I have been eating their Gyros since they have opened and can't find many that compare! They give large portions of food, bring your appetite. They deliver and cater too. Wish I could give negative stars Foods good. Service, god awful. First time I ordered the food was cold, but gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried them again. Never again! I called at 11:00 and sat on hold for over 14min, listening to Sweet Home Alabama. Then finally get to put my order in and I'm told, "within the hour your food will be there". Wait for an hour to come and go by, call in to ask where my food is. And am told that they wrote it was requested to be delivered at 12:30 by a receptionist who is laughing about it and thinks it's funny. So I wait till 12:30... still no food. And still waiting. So frustrating. Will never order from here again. In response to the owner: When I called I specifically asked for soon as possible and was told "within the hour" and my order would have been taken sooner than 11:27 if I hadn't had to sit on hold so long. We've ordered take-out and delivery many, many times with both small orders and large ones covering seven people or more. They get it right every time and delivery is always fast. We're still trying to get through the entire menu to find something that isn't good. That's the quandary- if you order the massive gyro built for two you might be missing out on the chicken sandwich or the Reuben. Then there's there the fried chicken dinner that is just mouth watering. The burgers aren't half bad either. They are consistently good with friendly service and and we love, love, love their delivery! read more

Looking to pick up dinner on my way home from shopping this evening so I decided to stop by kojaks in Cary. Now I have lived in This town for 43 years and been going to kojaks since they opened across from the train station. I will not step foot back in their establishment again due to the arrogance and poor service I got from there employees. My food sat up on the counter while the two in charge just talked away. There was another guest in front of me waiting for her food and they never served her while her food sat there. So then after I mentioned that I had been standing there for over 10 minutes waiting for my food wondering what was going on, the guy proceeds to say it wasn't sitting up there it just came up. I then had to demand y money back because they weren't going to do anything. Oh and I now waited 30 minutes in there and got no food and hopefully I was refunded properly. I just wasn't impressed with this place during a recent lunch visit. I ordered a Gyro combo with everything on it. I waited a bit, it wasn't too busy. I saw my order come out from the back and sit under the heat lamp. It sat there for a while until a person taking orders came over to answer the phone and I said something. By then fries were warm at best. The gyro had no lettuce, is that normal. I usually don't complain about too much food but you can't hold this gyro, you need a knife and fork. There was too much meat and the meat was mostly dry so that wasn't a bonus. I will try them again some other time. Clean and nicely decorated establishment though. read more

Quite possibly the most confusing in-store ordering experience. This only got two stars because the food was good. First, you get in line behind this massive wall that blocks the menu, but it's laid out so weird that people are all standing in an awkward crowd waiting to order. By the time you can see the menu, you are the next person in line and don't have time to decide. Then, you go and wait for your food at the end of the line you just waited in, which apparently is also the line to order ice cream. If my description didn't make sense, then you understand this restaurant as much as I do. They forgot the salad I ordered, but I didn't go back for it because I didn't want to have to experience the store again. I bet this place has solid delivery and you should definitely try that. First time there 4/4/19. Not bad. I would of gave 5 stars, but called in my order and told ready in about 10 minutes. I got there probably 20 minutes after I called order in and still had to wait. And if going to put Gravy Bread on menu, cut the bread so gravy can soak inside. I grew up eating this food and never had gravy bread that wasn't totally soaked. If I scored on gravy bread itself, just 2 stars, because Turano bread and good gravy, but good try. But glad I found a decent Chicago style joint in area. I was never a fan of Kojak's until I tried their Italian Beef at the new location... it is one of the best Beef's I have every had and now I can enjoy it with a beer!!! I've been back a few times and enjoyed the chicken gyro which is a little dry but then again it is chicken and way less greasier than its Beef/Lamb counterpart. Been a loyal customer for 20 years. Just had the worst customer service of my life. I ordered for delivery at 647 online . Order was confirmed. After an hour and fifteen minutes, I decided to call to check up on the order. The first person that answered the phone asked my information and found the order and said it had already been delivered. Obviously I wouldn't be calling if that was the case. So she asked me to hold. I waited for 4 or 5 mins. Now it is 8:05. Taylor answered the phone and apologized and told me there was some kind of issue and she would refund money because they're now closed. I didnt want a refund, I wanted my kids to eat the dinner I ordered and got charged for. Sounded to me that they realized they messed up, but didn't want to stay the extra 10 mins to make the situation right. Why isn't there a manager on duty? If you live in or around Cary you probably don't need to read a review about Kojak's (because you've been there!). For everyone else - it's good. And when I say "good" I mean good, not great. Everything is satisfactory, nothing more and nothing less than you would expect from a classic gyro joint. While I have been here well over 10 times, I haven't been very adventurous with the menu. Typically I'll go for a gyro sandwich or gyro plate, but have tried a few other things like salads and some sides. Their menu is pretty big, so if you have kids or are having an office lunch, everyone will be able to find something (even that one coworker who always claims they're on a diet). Chili - good flavor, but way too many beans for my liking. Gyros - Pretty good. But Mr. Beefy's down the road is better. Salads - Surprisingly good for a gyro place. The Southwest Chicken is my favorite. Italian Beef - Great choice. A close second after Portillo's. Fries - Love them. The staff is also super friendly and attentive. :) read more

Been going here for years, love the new location. Big, clean and lots of tables and TV's. But they need better management at the register and cook line. Confusing on how you queue up in line, what register is order and what is pick up and long wait for a couple dogs and beef. Then handed to me on a tray when the order was to go. Wait another 5 minutes to have it wrapped up. Food still very good though, best beef in this area for sure. Watched staff and cooks stand around waiting talking to each other. The old place had 3-4 guys hustling in the space of a closet and out came your food post haste. Maybe some kinks to work out here. read more

Kojacks is like Cary's personal Portillos. Food is just as good but with less of a line to wait in. Menu selection is huge with some pretty unique items not found at other hot dog/burger/gyros style restaurants. This new location has a great atmosphere and is easy to get to whether you're shopping at the shopping center here or coming from 14 or three oaks road. The quality of service seems to have improved as well since I was at the previous location. Food was fresh - I actually was surprised how good and fresh their feta tasted. Tomatoes on my burger were crisp and the onions were fresh without the overpowering taste of onions left out for days. Burger was good with a flame grilled taste but I prefer them more medium/medium rare. I didn't ask, so maybe they'd do that if I did. Onion rings are thick cut with a very good batter. At almost $4 however, I may not get them again as I didn't feel like they were worth it. 4/5 because they're a little slow even if it's not busy and a little expensive for a quick lunch imo. read more

We have been ordering from Kojak's for years. Since they have moved we have had terrible service. We do delivery since I am unable to drive. The last few times it was freezing cold, tho order was wrong and the fries tasted like cardboard. The latest and last, I bit into my Chicken Gyro and was met with a hard pebble like thing! Just had dinner here. Yum! Tried the cheeseburger which comes with grilled onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard (i added lettuce) and it has a nice grilled bun. Very good. My husband got the Chicken Gryos that had honey mustard, lettuce and tomato, i think? We both enjoyed our meals. Fries were also good, very hot and crisp. I think just the frozen kind you would expect at this type of place. Keep in mind...they close early though, we got there just before 8:00pm not knowing they closed then. Terrible service--order arrived 1.5 hrs after I placed order online. When it arrived, fries were cold and not at all crunchy. Other food that was supposed to be hot was barely warm. The shake was melted. I called after 1 hr to ask when my order would be delivered, and I was told it was out for delivery. It took another 20 minutes for my order to be delivered and I live 1.5 miles from the restaurant. I've been ordering from this place for over 20 years, and I've never been so disappointed. I'm getting "part of" my order reimbursed, but I paid $3 for delivery and $2.50 for a tip. I won't be ordering again for a very long time, if at all. read more

I recently moved into Cary, and seen this restaurant down the block from my apartment. I decided to drop in to finally have a taste of Kojaks, and I was very impressed by how clean it is and the portraits on the walls of schools around the neighborhood, it was a nice small place, the staff were very friendly. The register lady was very informative and friendly as well. I ordered a hot dog special. My word... when I got home and took a bite out of that hot dog. It was BLISS... and let me tell you those French fries were to die for!! Very very delicious! I will definitely be coming back for more of their grubs... Love their food quality here. So they didn't include it and would refund the difference. This instead of calling and asking if we wanted something different! The gyros are terrible. They used to cut the meat off the spit with a knife and now they shave it which is dried out thin and terribly dry with no flavor. Highly recommend you go somewhere else in Crystal Lake. I requested they use a knife to cut it like they used to but apparently that's history.
