When it was time to pay, I handed the lady my debit card and a few minutes later she proceeds to ask me if I paid already, I said yes I gave her my debit card just a few minutes prior. Sadly they removed the home-made dumplings that I really liked, but they have these fried seaweed rolls that are amazing. I know, fried seaweed rolls sounds kind of weird, but don't knock it 'til you try it! This is probably one of the worst Korean restaurants you can ever visit in your life. I go to Koco simply because there is no Kfood option in Evanston, but I will never eat from here from now on. The quality of food compared to its price is horrible. To be honest, some entrees taste average but they are overpriced, and quality of food is not guaranteed every time. A lot of appetizers are really overpriced, and I wonder how much the dish is actually worth. For instance, try their seaweed rolls, rice cakes, or fried shrimp. Right away, you just know that they are not fresh or quality food for the price you pay. Lets look at the entrees. Paying $13 for either ramen dukbokki or kimchi fried rice is ridiculous. And paying $14 for spicy pork? This is way too overpriced. They put three galbis (not even of good quality) in their soup and charge you $14. But after all, senseless pricing should not be so much of a problem; if you don't want to pay, you simply shouldn't go here. I get that. The REAL PROBLEM lies with the low quality of their food and service. It is not about that average taste of food, but how they cook and handle their food. Shrimps I ordered were dry and hard, and there is no way that they were freshly fried with the order (See attachment). I think a five year old can fry things better than them frying shrimps. When you deliver from this place, they often times miss things and make you sigh. Mistakes once a while can be tolerated, but when they continue to happen, that says something about this restaurant's attitude in general. They should consider themselves lucky that their business is actually sustained; if this place were in Korea, they would certainly run out of business. I dined in and delivered from this place many times, but I simply don't see the quality improvement. They keep adding new items on the menu, but their quality and handling of the food actually deteriorates. If you really want to dine here, just at least don't deliver from this place; in that way, you can tell them what is missing from the order right away. I hope their quality improves and stays consistent. I hate that I have to say bad things about this place because the servers are really nice, and I love Korean food. But they need to wake up and consider which things they need to improve on. This is my first review; but I just had to write this. Restaurants should respect customers and customers should respect them back. This restaurant, to me, has failed to establish this mutual respect. Koco table is this cute little restaurant in Evanston. They have an array of ice cream you can choose from. It was a super cold day so we opted to get some spicy ramen. Nothing unique about it - just plain old spicy ramen! We also got their bulgogi korean tacos and I must say that the tortilla was a breath of fresh air. It was so fluffy and crispy at the same time. I still need to check out the rest of their menu, but the tacos are definitely a must-try in my book! read more

Three of us went on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch and had high hopes based on other reviews and some personal recommendations. We ordered the spicy wings which were very good and easier to eat then DAK or Crisps because these are cut into individual pieces. The meat was not quite as moist and juicy as DAK's but the flavor was very good - the spiciness of the gojuchang and the crispness of the skin and coating were on target. We also ordered a chicken and a beef dolsot bibim bap. What struck me was that the bowls were hot, but not as hot as they could be especially after our amazing experience at Tanta in the city. That bowl was super hot. So much so that the rice really got crisp while we were eating. The bowls here are hot but the rice did not develop the nice crispy shell we were hoping for. Also the flavor of the ingredients of the bowl here were good, but not great. They were lacking a little seasoning and we had to use that same sweet and spicy sauce that was coating the wings to help ramp up the flavor. Unfortunately we arrived about 10 or 15 minutes after our lunch partner had. She was served a beverage and then we ordered and they told us they would bring our beverages. None arrived until after nearly halfway through the meal one of us got up to get their attention. Then it took forever to get the check. It was very strange service. They serve no alcohol but we're not sure if it's BYOB. The prices are OK, not cheap but not too expensive either. Some of my friends have expressed dissatisfaction with Koco Table because they don't think it's very authentic Korean food. Maybe because I'm not Korean, but I think it's pretty good. I've had the bibimbap, ddukbokki, and dolsot bibimbap. All of them were really good, very flavorful. However, it's a bit pricey for the amount of food I got. It's around $10-13 for a dish. UPDATE: For the ramyun ddukbokki, there's a lot more ramyun than ddukbokki. I wouldn't recommend getting it. Not worth it. I've had the cheese ddukbokki too. I didn't like that much either. It was a weird concept for me to put cheese and ddukbokki together. My favorite by far is just the regular ddukbokki. read more

Came here for dinner tonight (Friday) with two other friends. Food was 3/5. Service 5/5. We ordered the hot stone bimbibap, omurice, and veggie sundubu. My sundubu was okay--generous amount of tofu, but too much onion and chili oil (would have preferred gochujang), and not enough vegetables. The staff was very pleasant and friendly, and food arrived promptly despite the restaurant being pretty packed. Overall Koco Table remains one of my favorite places in Evanston for a casual meal or to meet with friends, but it doesn't hold up to restaurants in some of the suburbs or LA. read more

I actually have been here quite a few times since my last review, and a few things have changed since then that I liked more, but I still didn't feel like any of it warranted a 4-star level of my desire to come here. But I've had the bulgogi tacos 2 days in a row recently because it was so good! The bread is (at least similar to) the roti that you can get at flat top - light, chewy, and a bit sweet. The marinade on the meat is very flavorful, and the cabbage adds the perfect crunch. Very balanced. 2 for $9 is a little steep, but then again so is frontera's tacos and theirs is super tiny. These are a bit bigger. The owner guy recommended the sandwich on a french roll for next time, but I cannot get enough of that roti bread. The last time I was there, they changed the salad dressing to a more typically Asian sesame-ginger type, which I like, but I don't get why you don't get it with take out - and you don't necessarily get any more food with your order. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of seafood in their seafood soondubu. It's a small serving though. I hated their galbi soup. It's brown and mucky and really really really overly sweet the time I had it, like they dumped marinade water in the soup instead of just make a delicious and flavorful light broth. bleghh In the end, I still think the prices are a bit steep and their portions small, and that'll keep me from coming here too much, but I do think they are becoming more enticing, especially as pretty much the only nearby option for comforting Korean food. read more

I have had some really good Korean food in my day. I used to work at a Korean church. The people who cooked there set a high standard by which I judge Korean food. This is very good Korean food! Koco Table is located where JK Sweet used to be. JK sweet was OK. Not great but not bad. Koco table is by far a better place. This is very good authentic Korean food, albeit with a flair that makes it appealing to the American version of this great cuisine. For example, this place has yummy Korean friend chicken wings (spicy and mild). They are super crispy, sweet, savory, and yummy. These wings are better than most that I have had. They rival the wings that I have had at Joong Boo, the Korean supermarket on Kimball. And those wings are good. They are better than the wings at Del Seoul, and I would put them up against Crisp's fried chicken. They are really that good. I also hope to try the Korean style tacos. I have had their bulgogi (Korean bbq beef). This is not the over-the-fire version of the dish. It is pan fried or seared. The crispy version is actually very good. I also really liked the Spicy Pork. It is spicy and delicious, very flavorful. The dishes come with a salad, which is over-dressed with an Asian flavored dressing (again, an American accommodation) and rice. I ordered a side of kimchi. It was good, but it could have used a little more time to get ripe. The place is small. The ambience is casual. At these prices, this should be a good staple for Northwestern students (and within walking distance). read more

They took over 30 minutes just to take our order while taking the order of those seated after us immediately. It took well over an hour from seating to getting food and it was not busy. Foood is soo good and its location is so convenient. I love the bibimbap, kimchi fried rice the ddukbokki, and the soondubu. The food taste is a bit american friendly- it is sweeter and milder in spices what I am used to in Korea. However, when I am having my korean food fixn koco does the job. The menu is limited, but it does have a lot the nation's beloved dishes. Hoewever, sometimes I do miss traditional korean side dishes or really heart warming stews, and Koco doesn't serve the needs of korean food connoisseurs. The price is okay. I think they give a lot of food-well I am small so I like to pack up half of what I had. It's not hard to eat the whole thing though, not at all. Most dishes are 10-15 dollars. Apparently, this is one of the better (only) Korean options in Evanston. For $10, there are many choices - bibimbap, seafood pancake, tofu soup etc. It was a cold, rainy day, so I opted for the tofu soup. I asked the waiter on a scale of 1-10, how spicy the soup would be. He said 8. Thus, I told him I wanted a level 2 spicy. Unfortunately, my level 2 spicy had basically no spiciness in it. My boyfriend's level 8 was not even that spicy. This is more of a fast food / cafe style place, so there are none of the little side dishes that you may find in more traditional Korean restaurants. (Oh, this one also sells Korean fusion tacos too, so yeah, not traditional). However, you can request for kimchi. I usually get either the japchae or the bulgogi; they're very inconsistent (for instance, when I ate there today, the bulgogi was overcooked and many pieces were burned). They also do not have the side dishes that Korean places usually have. I don't think Koco will be improving their quality any time soon since they don't have any need to, and their prices have been creeping up. Coming from downtown LA (where Koreatown is), I have high standards for Korean food. I tempered my expectations, knowing that Evanston isn't a great culinary cit.... I mean township, but I was pleasantly surprised by Koco Table. I'll definitely be back when I'm craving Korean food. FOOD: 4 stars I had the BULGOGI and it had great flavor. The quality of meat was above average and there was a nice sear to the meat, as opposed to the watery consistency many places give this dish. My wife had the TOFU BIBIMBAP and she loved it. She prefers foods more on the blander side, but cares a lot about texture. I tried some and it was a good dish. Koco Table definitely exceeded our expectations and we'd come back for the food. Next time I'll try their soon tofu pot (which has a weird spelling of "sundubu" on their menu). I understand they're spelling it like you say it, but it does go against the common convention, at least in LA. Also, the pricing was fair. In general, I feel this type of Korean food is overpriced, but I have to compare Koco Table's prices with the market, not my internal menu. One thing I found odd was the fact that it seems like only 1/3 of the entire unit is occupied by seats. The rest was kitchen, storage, and an oddly large reception counter area. I would think a restaurant should use at least half of its space on seating, since that's how they make money, but who am I to say? The ambiance seemed fine during our visit. I've come here a few times & tried both the jop chae and the tofu bibimbap (the version served in a bowl rather than a stone pot). I really like the jop chae & think both the vegetables and noodles are great. I really didn't like the bibimbap, however, compared to others I have tried in the Evanston/Chicago area. I didn't like the vegetables much or how they were cooked, and it was quite plain even with the addition of the sauce. Nice place to go in town for Korean food. They have tons of options it can be a bit overwhelming to pick. Luckily there is a picture menu on the back for most dishes in case you dont know what they are and a few pictures on the chalkboard of popular dishes. Prices are okay at around 10-16 per dish and around 2-4 for drinks. You can choose from typical drinks or get some traditional teas. They hVe typical tea flavors and then speciality like ginsing and jujube with honey. I was a bit disappointed but we were served warm water...not hot....not cold...no ice just tap water that was never in ice or a fridge. For food we both tried noodle soups of some sort. They were good not great. I had one with dumplings and it was a very large thing if soup. It had rice cakes in that were chewy and eggs. The soup was a bit bland in flavor. This restaurant has improved quite a bit over the past 3 years. Service & menu items are more consistent and not being crossed off and on, on the menu. I always have a hard time deciding what to eat here because they're all equally delicious. They do serve a diverse menu that features Korean bar food, street food, traditional food and even health conscious entrees. For starters tho, you can't go wrong with their bibimbap and crispy scrumptious chicken wings. I always opt for their soondoobu jigae (seafood tofu soup) on winter days. Need a hangover or cold cure? Koco is like the McDonald of Korean food. Both taste great, but whereas McDonalds uses excessive oils and fats, Koco uses excessive red chili powder and sodium. I can't deny that Koco tastes great, and has been my default in Evanston when I'm craving Korean food. But without a doubt, I always feel terrible afterwards and the gallons of water that I drink cannot drown out the amount of sodium they put in their food, esp those with soups / broth. I usually get the seafood soondubu, and have always been satisfied with my meals in the moment. Seafood is minimal in the soondubu, but it's packing with flavor. However, the soondubu must be 300x your daily sodium allowance and no amount of water can cure my dehydration for the rest of the day. I'm pretty sure they use Shin Ramyun packets to make their ramen - so feel free to buy a pack from Hmart and make it yourself! All in all, not a terrible place, but go in realizing that you're overdosing on sodium, but that the food tastes great! read more

It's a very casual, low key Korean restaurant. They were doing good business around 12:30 but we were seated right away. I'm certainly no expert on Korean food but it seems like they have all the main categories on their menu. I went with the japchae (stir fried beef, sweet potato noodles, onion, etc...). I agree with other reviews that the prices are a bit high but you do get A LOT of food. These people do have to pay their rent you know! So conveniently located right next to Northwestern University too (I can go any time before or after classes). Koco is a recent, much-welcomed addition to the Evanston food scene. Koco serves Korean fast comfort food, like soups and rice bowls. And bonus points for being the first to serve ramen in Evanston (for $5.99!). The food is solid: spicy dishes are sufficiently spicy, dishes aren't greasy, food is cooked well. The decor is casual, comfortable and cozy. Service is okay right now, hopefully it'll pick up with time (for example: we asked for spoons for the shared dishes, and the waiter said he didn't have any. what?) This is a great move for the city, in a series of positive food trends that started with Pret last year, Taco Diablo this summer, to be followed by Rick Bayless' Frontera Fresco in Norris, then Trader Joe's in the Spring. I should've reviewed this place way too long ago. I go to this place at least twice a week. It is probably one of the most authentic Korean food you could get in the area, and the service is always good. Sure, it might be a little pricey but what you could get for it is definitely worth it. SO GOOD UGH. If I had the time and money I would go there every single day. It's a home away from home. I've tried every almost every dish on the menu at atleast once (I think the only thing I've never gotten is the vegetarian stuff) and my favorites are: Chadul, Beef Kimchi Fried Rice, Jin Ramyun, and the Ramyun Toppoki. Also, if you go there with people you are not familiar with, you can always start the conversation by talking about the flashy KPOP music videos that are playing on the TVs. I know people say that it is not the most authentic Korean food, but for what you can get in Chicago (and the Evanston area in general) it is fantastic. Definitely recommend. read more

This is my staple food as a student at Northwestern. It is one of the closest restaurant to campus. Perfect for a quick lunch in between classes. The food. My favorite dish to get is the Seafood Soondubu. It's a hot spicy stew with tofu and seafood. I was surprised at the amount of seafood in the dish, definitely more than I expected. The Kimchi Albab is a great dish to treat yourself! It's vegetables, beef, rice, kimchi top with salmon roe. It's served in a stone bowl so the rice keeps cooking and gets crispy. The service is inconsistent. They are fast at getting food out, but they often don't remember to refill your water. It's a clean nice restaurant. Perfect for Northwestern students. Food: A perfect 10. We tried this place a few weeks ago for the first time. My wife had Bi Bim Bop. I had Spicy Pork. We had kim-chee dumplings and fried seaweed roll to start. I love fish so the seaweed roll was a HUGE hit. The kim chee dumplings were AMAZING (get them fried, not steamed, they are worth the extra time at the gym). I'm pretty sure Koco Table is the only Korean restaurant in downtown Evanston (which is better than nothing). I had the beef soondubu, which was served bubbling hot, with a side of delicious purple rice, something I enjoyed more than the traditional white rice. The one thing that was a huge turn-off for me was the fact that there's no banchan, or Korean side dishes. :( I don't think I've ever been to a Korean restaurant that didn't serve them with your meal. Personally, I think the banchan is one of the best parts of Korean food, so for that reason alone, I haven't been back to Koco Table. However, I tend to have really strong cravings for Korean food so who knows, maybe I'll give them another shot. read more

I've come here twice, both for their soondubu. First time was the seafood soondubu which lacked depth of flavor compared to others that I've had. I also have tried the beef soondubu which was similar in flavor but the meat was tough :( This was the first time I've had beef soondubu so not sure if this is the norm or what...They are very generous with the tofu and it's a good portion for $9.99. There's a special deal where they offer $2 off the soondubu if you order an appetizer with it. Also note that perhaps this place is pretty good considering there isn't another korean place that has soondubu in Evanston. I usually end up traveling to Morton Grove or Niles for a nice fix. I've tried two of their apps: pan fried potsticker and the spicy korean style wings. The potstickers were tasty but not memorable. The spicy korean wings though was the highlight of this place for me! it's nice and crisp and I was very pleasantly surprised that it had such good flavor! I'm a big korean fried chicken fan (tried Dak, Crisp, and Bon Chon chains). These chicken wings were up there with the best of them! Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon - restaurant was quite busy. We were greeted and seated immediately. We ordered the wings, seafood pancake, dolsot chicken bibimbap, and spicy chicken. All in all, very good portions and good food for the price. The pancake was more oily than I have had, but hit the right seafood flavors. Wings were crispy and sauced right - would have liked a little bit more heat perhaps. Spicy chicken was my best liked dish. Service was fast and on point. read more

I like this place a lot as its authentic Korean food, but it is on the pricey side. I liked the layout and decor. The service was okay. I thoroughly enjoyed the ramen, bibimbap, and bulgolgi and kimchi fried rice. All were very delicious. The spicy dishes were decently hot, but not overly so. Portions were a pretty good size. Honestly, Koco Table is just okay. Unfortunately, it's pretty much the only Korean restaurant in Evanston so unless you want to take the time to travel out of town, you'll have to settle for this restaurant. After coming here quite a few times, I discovered that Koco Table can actually be a decent place to eat at if you order the right things. Avoid the dukbokki at all costs! I am a huuuuge fan of dukbokki so sometimes I can't help but order it even though I know that I am pretty much paying $11 for 5 measly pieces drenched in sauce. What you SHOULD order, however, is the beef sundubu and the dolsot bibimbap (a classic). The sundubu is silky and flavorful even though the portion size of the dish is a bit small. The dolsot bibimbap is just your classic stone bowl rice dish. I would say that it's a pretty good size for about two people to share. During my most recent visit, I tried the yukgaejang for the first time. I thought it was a pretty decent dish but I wish that there were more potato noodles and more stuff in the dish overall. The actual dish had way too much soup and not enough substance so I was not very full after finishing it. I will probably revisit Koco Table whenever I am craving Korean food on the weekdays since the location is convenient. Even though the food is pretty average and overpriced, it still does the job of satisfying my craving. read more
