The original receipt that I almost signed - although they have charged auto-tips, it didn't show on this bill.
Lilian T.

If you plan to dine here, be precautious for the restaurant owner yelling at you, throwing things at you and claiming "my son is a lawyer." She physically assaulted us and my phone got hit & my friend's wrist was pulled and hurt. The restaurant charges tips automatically for party of 2. It was not shown on my receipt, only my friend found out before I signed my name on the bill for $5 tip (on top of their auto-tips) for $20 of food. (Picture included.) We then requested the restaurant to print a receipt without the auto-tips so that we could add our own. As you can see in the picture of my original receipt, I don't tip badly (even though they gave us a soup with human hairs in it - the server helped to change the food), but we didn't like the way they were trying to fool us around. The server called the owner, and she came yelling at us "don't come again, just sign". After we insisted on a bill reprinted, the owner then threw at us one-dollar bills yelling, as if we were caring about several dollars of tips. No, we didn't care about dollars, and I normally tip better than their auto-tips, but we cared about being conned and we cared about the attitude of the restaurant owner. She even said "my son is a lawyer". I guess she's fairly confident that she could just do whatever, because her son would "back her up" in court? She didn't seem mentally stable and she came really close to us physically. I started recording this situation and she hit my phone, trying to grab me, reaching towards my pocket (or hand, I don't honestly know, as you can see in the pictures.) She went further to pull my friend's wrist and hurt her. It was a bit scary at the moment. I'm glad I videotaped everything. So, if you plan to dine here, good luck. -------- Food: health problems I got army stew and had 2 pieces of human long hairs in it. It was disgusting. The server was nice to change it for me. But anyway you can imagine the health problems the restaurant might have. -------- Service: They were short staffed, only one waitress doing everything. She was nice and I don't blame her being slow to bring the water to our table. It was like 20 minutes after we sit down. There were maybe 3 or 4 tables of customers in the restaurant when we came, and there were tables left not cleaned. We waited a few minutes for the table to be cleaned up. The food came about 25 minutes after we placed the order. That was already 45 minutes after we sit down. In general I'd say slow, slow service. The waitress was nice though. It's just very short staffed. I will, of course, never come back again after the assault of the owner.

Bulgogi Ddookbaegi (Bulgogi Soup)

The beef bulgogi soup was great. I really enjoyed the broth paired with a side of rice. No lunch special but worth the stop on a brisk day, or any day really.

This is definitely a good restaurant to visit in evanston! The ambiance is decent but the food is great. My favorites are the steamed mandoo and the kimchi samgyupsal, but so far I've liked everything I've tried. I know I'll be back here sooner or later.

Overall this was a pretty disappointing experience. I've eaten here a couple times in the past and ordered out a few times too. Its always been pretty similar in terms of experience. The service was pretty poor. Our waitress gave us one menu and we had to go fetch a second one for our table of 2. She started taking our menus away before we even ordered (there were plenty to go around, its not like other patrons were waiting for a menu). The restaurant had maybe 5 tables of guests all waiting for their meal. They started bringing all the dishes out and they kept bringing the wrong dish to the wrong tables. It was very disorganized. Ours was luckily brought to us correctly. The egg in the bibimbap was undercooked (raw whites) whereas the boiled egg in the cold noodle was way, way overcooked. The bibimbap had ingredients of various temperatures and the rice was hard. The cold noodles were alright. A big red flag to me is a Korean restaurant that doesnt give out free banchan /side dishes like kimchi, fish cakes, etc. That really sealed the deal for me. The interior of the restaurant was fine and clean, but not super interesting in terms of decor but I dont really mind that. Overall, this wasn't my first choice of Korean restaurant and we really only came here because I was craving Korean food and our preferred restaurant is closed for vacation. 2 stars because my noodles were generally fine. Oh and there's an automatic 18% tip.

Massive portions and fresh food! I love kocotable. The price is a little high but reasonable for the food portions.

Veggie Sundubu

[Koco Table] Local Korean restaurant in Evanston, right outside of Northwestern campus Veggie Sundubu Budae Jjigae Overall, food was good. Definitely a spot to hit during the winters. Their service was a bit down just because they were so short staffed with 3 employees and it was packed inside. 8/10 720 1/2 Clark St Evanston, IL 60201

Kimchi jjigae and rice

Quite the authentic vibe. I visited as soon as they opened so it took a while for someone to come out and greet me from the back but as soon as I sat and got the menu my order was taken and I was given water. It must just be that they just opened for the day, but it was quite warm inside, especially for the summer. I ordered Kimchi JJigae and it came with traditional Korean purple rice which tasted great. Self-serve utensils but other than that the older lady who took my order and served me was sweet. She packed my leftovers and gave me extra rice to take home. I was just a party of 1 and I was automatically charged gratuity which is not typical. My total bill was about $19 for just a bowl of jjigae and rice. Would revisit and try other things.

Kimchi Albap

말도 없이 김치알밥에 알빼고 맛살로 대체하신건...아무리 외국인이 더 많이 간다해도 양심있게 장사합시다. Fish roe replaced by imitation crab meat without any notice. Service is whatever, not pleasant but not rude. The funniest part is that the amount of tip is decided by them and included in the check. Did I go with a big party? No, I was by myself.

Cheese Donkkasu, Cheese Buldak

This is a decent spot for Korean food in the Evanston area! We got the Cheese Donkkasu, Cheese Buldak, and Mandu Sundubu. My favorite was the cheese buldak, which was spicy but very oily. They come with sides of rice (but no banchan/side dishes!) so I was definitely full by the end of my meal. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, and they recently renovated the inside so it's very clean! I would recommend going here if you have a craving for Korean food.

Great service when I came. Food came out fast and always love the spicy pork. Great spice flavor all around. The bulgogi soup was exactly as described. Overall would 100% get the spicy pork but not the bulgogi soup.

Crispy Potato Croquettes, Korean Sausage on a stick w spicy ketchup sauce, Kimchi fried rice w Beef
Kei B.

Lunch: Kimchi Fried Rice w Beef, Crispy Potato Croquettes and (not sure of name) a Breaded Korean Sausage on a stick. Everything tasted pretty good - the croquettes- potato w corn, peas n carrots- were breaded n fried just right. The fried rice could've had more beef, served w fried egg on top. I didn't care for the breaded sausage on a stick n didn't taste the mozzarella, but my lunch partner liked it. A spicy ketchup sauce was served w it. The breading was not as dark as it appears in my pix, it was crispy golden.

Evanston Chicken Shack - Crispy & Juicy as always!

I also ordered a side of cole slaw and red beans and rice. The guy behind the counter said they don't have mild sauce for the chicken. Then he told me the sauces that they had, so I said no sauce. I guess he was also relating the sauces for the rib tips when I already said no sauce. They cook the chicken fresh and may take a little time. When I got home, I was ready to dig in but I found out the sauce discussion left my rib tips with no bbq sauce. I called them and a nice lady told me I would be taken care of the next time, I visit. Thank goodness, I had bbq sauce. But I tried the tips without sauce and they were seasoned well. I put on some Sweet Baby Rays on them and dang it was good. The tips were tender and a lot of meat. The chicken was so good that I wish I would have gotten more. It was seasoned and crunchy. The Cole slaw was okay and the red beans and rice was good, just which it had a little more pot liquor. I would definitely go back. Also the prices that they have online is really outdated.

Service and the staff is super friendly. Got a two drumstick and two breast and it was only $12. Very filling and hit the spot! I don't want to sound sacrilegious but I think fans of Harold's in Chicago would really like this place ! Very limited seating there but would recommend you eat fresh there if you can. Very no frills and casual atmosphere.

Good wide menu with items that you don't find at your mainstream japanese restaurant. More like old school Chicago Japanese. (Thinking a blend here of old Ginza and maybe some parts Sunshine.) Maybe only with the departure of those favorites we appreciate more what has stayed on. Appetizer selection is long enough to just get small plates to share. Notables: - ebi snijo (homemade shrimp ball) - hamachi jaw (if you haven't had it) - hirame no cha soba age (fried green tea noodles and whitefish rolled with seaweed) - evokes the old Ginza restaurant for me - octopus sunomono Even after three recent visits without repeat apps, there are still more we haven't had elsewhere to try. Part of the reason for that is - we get entrees too. We've been happy with: - chirashi (curious how the sashimi D differs) - Salmon Bento (D) - so many different things fun to share! - Kuni's Special - gomaee and mixed seafood sunomono, then our choice of sashimi followed by saba - nabe yaki udon is reasonable here at $13 with two tempura shrimp Know there's lots of reviews here, but as long as there is room on weekends for us we're happy to share!

My friend loves sushi and claimed this was the best quality sushi he'd had. The place isn't very vegetarian friendly though; they have some veggie rolls, but nothing is a specialty roll so it feels very basic. I ended up getting a side of mushrooms and had that with rice which was good, but of course not the most vegetarian friendly place. However, if you don't care about specialty rolls and just want really good quality sushi, this is DEFINITELY the spot and you won't regret it!
