I came here with my girlfriend for my last meal in Chicago and it did not disappoint! We got the beef sundubu-jjigae as well as the gyoza. The tofu was the softest and felt like I was biting into a cloud. The texture was amazing and the rice complimented the soup so well. There were a few other things on the menu that looked good and I wish I could've tried! The service was amazing. The lady at the front was very sweet and even though I had all my luggage and bags she sat us in a very spacious area. Everyone was super kind and they treat their customers with care! This place has THE BEST sundubu I have ever had! I keep trying sundubu at other Korean restaurants in the Chicagoland area and whenever we travel, but none can compare. I pop in just about every week for a stone bowl of this piping hot deliciousness (even in the dead of summer!), and seriously have to resist coming more often. Note, the decor is nothing to write home about, and aside from the delightful owner (or at least I find her delightful!), the service is pretty subpar. I often have to get my own napkins, and am rarely presented with a check without asking for it. But as long as the sundubu remains this delicious, I would probably wash my own dishes after the meal if it meant I could keep this place in business for a long time! read more

If you plan to dine here, be precautious for the restaurant owner yelling at you, throwing things at you and claiming "my son is a lawyer." She physically assaulted us and my phone got hit & my friend's wrist was pulled and hurt. The restaurant charges tips automatically for party of 2. It was not shown on my receipt, only my friend found out before I signed my name on the bill for $5 tip (on top of their auto-tips) for $20 of food. (Picture included.) We then requested the restaurant to print a receipt without the auto-tips so that we could add our own. As you can see in the picture of my original receipt, I don't tip badly (even though they gave us a soup with human hairs in it - the server helped to change the food), but we didn't like the way they were trying to fool us around. The server called the owner, and she came yelling at us "don't come again, just sign". After we insisted on a bill reprinted, the owner then threw at us one-dollar bills yelling, as if we were caring about several dollars of tips. No, we didn't care about dollars, and I normally tip better than their auto-tips, but we cared about being conned and we cared about the attitude of the restaurant owner. She even said "my son is a lawyer". I guess she's fairly confident that she could just do whatever, because her son would "back her up" in court? She didn't seem mentally stable and she came really close to us physically. I started recording this situation and she hit my phone, trying to grab me, reaching towards my pocket (or hand, I don't honestly know, as you can see in the pictures.) She went further to pull my friend's wrist and hurt her. It was a bit scary at the moment. I'm glad I videotaped everything. So, if you plan to dine here, good luck. -------- Food: health problems I got army stew and had 2 pieces of human long hairs in it. It was disgusting. The server was nice to change it for me. But anyway you can imagine the health problems the restaurant might have. -------- Service: They were short staffed, only one waitress doing everything. She was nice and I don't blame her being slow to bring the water to our table. It was like 20 minutes after we sit down. There were maybe 3 or 4 tables of customers in the restaurant when we came, and there were tables left not cleaned. We waited a few minutes for the table to be cleaned up. The food came about 25 minutes after we placed the order. That was already 45 minutes after we sit down. In general I'd say slow, slow service. The waitress was nice though. Overall this was a pretty disappointing experience. I've eaten here a couple times in the past and ordered out a few times too. Its always been pretty similar in terms of experience. The service was pretty poor. Our waitress gave us one menu and we had to go fetch a second one for our table of 2. She started taking our menus away before we even ordered (there were plenty to go around, its not like other patrons were waiting for a menu). The restaurant had maybe 5 tables of guests all waiting for their meal. They started bringing all the dishes out and they kept bringing the wrong dish to the wrong tables. It was very disorganized. Ours was luckily brought to us correctly. The egg in the bibimbap was undercooked (raw whites) whereas the boiled egg in the cold noodle was way, way overcooked. The bibimbap had ingredients of various temperatures and the rice was hard. The cold noodles were alright. A big red flag to me is a Korean restaurant that doesnt give out free banchan /side dishes like kimchi, fish cakes, etc. That really sealed the deal for me. The interior of the restaurant was fine and clean, but not super interesting in terms of decor but I dont really mind that. Overall, this wasn't my first choice of Korean restaurant and we really only came here because I was craving Korean food and our preferred restaurant is closed for vacation. 2 stars because my noodles were generally fine. I visited as soon as they opened so it took a while for someone to come out and greet me from the back but as soon as I sat and got the menu my order was taken and I was given water. It must just be that they just opened for the day, but it was quite warm inside, especially for the summer. I ordered Kimchi JJigae and it came with traditional Korean purple rice which tasted great. Self-serve utensils but other than that the older lady who took my order and served me was sweet. She packed my leftovers and gave me extra rice to take home. Back in the day the diner next door used to have a Korean section in the menu. I think maybe this was the spin-off of that and it definitely gives off that kind of vibe, a diner-ish type place that serves Korean food that definitely caters to the Northwestern crowd, but looking for another Korean restaurant in the area that I could take my family to, I suggested this place. We came in the early evening and there were maybe 2 other tables there so we got seated and given menus and water quickly. However, after that service was pretty iffy-even by Korean standards, like forget utensils for a table of four iffy. I will say though that it's interesting to see they have budaejigae for one, most places it's a minimum of two. The one here is in a little pot for one and it was pretty salty, which means for normal people that it was very salty but not as much spice. This review is long overdue, since my friends always joke that Koco Table is my 2nd home -- I've checked in 31 times on Foursquare since the store opened last year, and practically all the waiters already know my order... whooops? Even though I order that religiously, I've practically tried everything on the menu, and loved it all -- some other standouts are the Beef Dolsot Bibimbap and Kimchi Beef Albab. To the reviews that complain about the ramyun because it tasted like something you could've made.... why did you order ramyun? If you're judging a restaurant based on how well you can make a dish in comparison, just order something they make better than you can. Anyways, this will always be my go-to spot until I graduate. I've both dined here and ordered takeout a few times now and I really like how consistent the food is. The hot stone bimimbap is a favorite if you're dining in - add the sauce, give it a good stir, and -important- let it sit so that the bottom of the stone bowl crisps up the rice at the bottom! Kinda like a good paella. That caramelized, crispy part is worth the extra $2. If it's a cold day out, just having the meal stay hot throughout is such a warming prospect. This is the only (worthy) place in Evanston to get my Korean fix. You can't go wrong with any of the dishes. I've had everything here. C'mon, 19 check-ins, and that's not counting all of them haha. My favorites are the spicy pork (comes with rice and salad) and seafood soon du bu (soft tofu stew). Place offers generous portions and is authentic as it gets. I had ordered yook gae jang, which should be getting made in large batches, so I wasn't sure why it took so long for the food to come. A solid 4-stars for good service, and great but pricey food. The first time I visited I explained that while I love Asian food, I'd never had Korean. On my second visit, I had my boyfriend with me. We ordered potato croquettes to start. For main dishes he ordered the bulgogi and I got hot stone chicken bibimbap. The potato croquettes were once again delicious. Perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. I loved my bibimbap, especially with the rice getting crispy in the hot stone.
