Tile to hardwood transitions (Schluter System)

Mark Howe installed a perfect 12x24" porcelain tile floor in my foyer, foyer bath room, hall closet, and kitchen in spring and early summer 2023. He removed a horrible failed tile install, removed the kitchen cabinets and all appliances, and tiled underneath them. He used epoxy grout which will last forever! I have added two photos to demonstrate the extraordinary and meticulous quality and beauty of his work. In particular, he used the Schluter system including the system for the hardwood floor to tile and tile to stair carpet transitions. You'd expect that he will be forbiddingly expensive! No!! The costs were well below the costs for the shoddy and painfully disastrous damage done by a previous installer which, because of a court settlement, I unfortunately can't name. Mark also performed a wide range of electric, plumbing, and other handyman services. All were executed with the same great care to doing it right, perfectly, and aesthetically pleasing. I felt so comfortable with Mark, I gave him my house keys. I know he never snooped. He is a very nice friendly, quiet and respectful man. He has a lot of work, but if you can get him on your jobs, you won't need to worry about anything. Thank you, Mark, for giving me such a beautiful floor to live with!

Mark and his helper did a wonderful job of tiling the wall above our fireplace. The quality of his work is outstanding. I wouldn't hesitate in hiring him again. He was dependable in calling or arriving when promised, always cleaning up the work area, friendly and fair in his price. A real treasure!

I accepted his quote, turned down 2 other bids, bought the materials he suggested, and he cancels the day before and won't respond.

We had Chris come out and do a bathroom counter backsplash as well as tile the floor of our utility…read moreroom which was linoleum. Not a huge job, but it is hard to get some contractors to come out and look at smaller jobs. This did not bother Chris as he came out the next day after we talked. He was able to come out and start about 2 weeks later like he indicated on the estimate and start. Other than a one day start delay, which was no issue, he began work. The trickiest thing was trying to get the soon-to-be-installed tile floor flush with the pre-existing wood floor so we could avoid using a transition strip. The sub-flooring from the builder was extra thick making the transition a bit problematic. He gave us a couple of options and we decided to take a chance and pull out the existing sub floor and use new backer board with the extra thick trowel - the tiles were very long (20 or so inches) and needed a thicker mortar layer for better adhesion. He had stressed this thicker layer was his primary concern in trying to get a nice flush transition. While he out up the bathroom back splash, we thought about our options of the utility room floor. We decided to take forego the transition strip and hope for a smooth transition with little or no 'bump' in between. So, on the first day he out up the back splash and tore out the old floor and put down the backer board. The next day, he grouted the back splash and laid done the floor tiles. Behold! The tiles were flush/nearly flush so we could not have been more pleased/thrilled. The floor looked great. The next work day, he came out and grouted the floor - using a life-time-guaranteed grout stain that he recommended and he was done! Chris - worked fast with minimal inconvenience - gave us an excellent back splash in the bathroom - laid a near perfect beautiful tile floor for us in the utility room - gave us good recommendations on grout color as well as grout sealer options - was very nice and easy to work with - charged a fair price (we paid him 50% AFTER his first full day) and the last 50% after he was all done - did a pretty good jobs of covering the work space in the garage where he set up and hauled off his leftovers/trash - gave me some great smoker grill tips! I know he does bigger jobs as well, but from my smaller work perspective, he did great and we were very happy. We'd recommend him for sure. Thanks, Chris! Matt & Tami S.

Chris was contacted on the premise that we needed a good tiler with immediate availability. After…read moreseeing his reviews here, I reached out to him and he was prompt and friendly throughout the entire bidding process. We contracted him on June 8th to complete our master bathroom, guest bathroom, powder room and kitchen backsplash and had to pay a 50% cash deposit upfront. Despite verbally quoting us 5 days to get each bathroom done and knowing that we were eager to move into our home and needed finished bathrooms to be able to do so, Chris took 5 days just to finish laying subway tile on the walls of our shower before disappearing to another job. He was messy and took little care to clean up his workspace. We had to clean up after him twice as he left empty boxes strewn about with remnants of thin set on them. We have a $1200 tub sitting in the master bedroom covered in clear plastic wrap with cardboard on top to stop heavy objects resting on top from falling through the plastic wrap. One day, we came by the house to check up on the progress and found that he moved the cardboard aside and left a chunk of thin set almost the size of a soccer ball on top of the delicate plastic. When Chris left to work on another job for a week, the contractor working on our basement remodel offered to have his own tilers come by and work on the other bathroom and powder room due to Chris' delays. We told Chris this and at that point our relationship soured. His work product fell off a cliff and he had attitude with us. For example, our basement contractor had placed a roll away dumpster in our backyard to clean up his job site and other areas of our home, Chris texts us when he sees it saying we needed to remove our dumpster because it was too hard to find parking on our street. Over six months of workers coming through our home, he was the first one to ever ask that we provide him with curbside parking. The penny tile he installed on our shower floor was wavy with two tiles just sticking upward and a thick uneven grout line along the back edge of our shower stall. The chrome drain plate in the center of the shower was cemented in place due to him carelessly wiping the grout into it. We had to pry it up with sheer force and are now trying to figure out how to clean all the grout stuck between its delicate grooves. When he finally got to the cement tile for our bathroom floor, he decided not to thoroughly follow the instructions I gathered for him from the tile manufacturer (when he said he didn't know how to lay cement tile). Frankly, I didn't even know he had decided not to follow the last step in the installation process until I called him to ask him when he planned to return to finish the job after two days absence. His response? "It is finished what are you talking about" (verbatim) Apparently, he was done but decided not to ever inform me, clean up, or that he had unilaterally decided not apply the last sealer. We also did not consider the job done since there were holes in the grout, staining that was obviously from his failure to wipe dry parts of the tile, and the shower floor penny tile was so terrible. After pressing him firmly, we were finally able to get him to come out to see what we were unhappy with and then wait again for him to come fix it. He's now left after the fix and there are still holes in the grout. He made no attempt to fix the wonky grout line in the penny tile and the sealer is still not applied. At this juncture, I am less than impressed with Chris' work product. Therefore, instead of trying to get him out AGAIN, I told Chris it was best if I rectified the outstanding issues with his tile job myself and that we end the relationship now instead of having him come out to do the kitchen backsplash. Accordingly, I asked for a refund of $500 in overpayment from the 50% cash deposit we'd paid. I have had zero response from Chris...hope this review will help...

Not a lot of time in my lunch hour so I was very happy to get in an out quickly. I needed to make a major decision, choose a grout color. To those who have never had to make this decision, it can either make or break your project. Go with the wrong color and it looks like you had Stevie Wonder doing it for you. I was more then glad to let someone help me make the decision about this so I was quickly shown all the colors, helped with the decisions of what colors would "go" and quickly eliminated those that I did not like. Once the decision was made, I basically had to stand there and swipe the card. The gent who was assisting me ran to the back and came out with a box of all the things I needed: The right Color Caulk, Spacers, Colored Grout, the stuff to mix with it so I didn't have to seal it ever, which if you have ever sealed grout you know what a pain that is. Once I swipped my card he grabbed the box and started walking outside with out even being asked and grabbed the bucket of pre mixed mastic on the way out the door. Again, pre mixed is the way to GO! I have purchased from several of the stores in the chain and was very happy to be able to get in, get out and get going.

We liked the color in the store but they only had 15sq ft, so they had to get more from the warehouse. When we picked it up and took it home not only was the match terrible, but it wasn't even the same size as our tile. Unfortunately when trying to return it we were told it was special order no returns. When I explained that I was told this was coming from their warehouse, the salesperson said "it's from their warehouse not ours". Needless to say I now have 85sqft of the wrong tile. Their practices are deceptive and their customer service is an attitude of we just don't care. Spend your money somewhere else!
