Where can you demo slice and dice with a knife (or many of them) from friendly, knowledgeable folks without commitment before you buy? They know their knives. PAPER thin tomato slices. A good knife is what everyone deserves. Yup, they're pricey, but you don't need many. Shop during the garage sale they have from time to time...some one of a kind gems brought back from Japan personally chosen by Kevin the owner, but get there quick, the good ones go fast. So what if a Japanese knife isn't for you? Check it out and see what a quality knife does. If you have nothing to compare to, you'll never know how wonderful a sharp knife can be. Knife sharpening AND repairs. You bought it there, bring it back in. Other knives super reasonable - and they don't have to be particularly GOOD knives either. Just ask what the charge will be. It's based on size and is usually $6- $12. Knife broken? Don't use an expensive knife because you hate the handle? Someone opened a can with your favourite knife or hacked a bone and took a hunk out of the edge? Get a quote - they can fix it up. Nothing sadder than an expensive or well-loved tool or family heirloom sitting in a drawer collecting dust. Classes for knife sharpening - spend a morning and learn how to do it yourself. Save trips to the shop. ;-) Accessories, cutting boards - beautiful cutting boards, some locally made! Quality aprons, cookbooks, hard to find and unique items. Magnetic knife holder in a guitar? In an ELECTRIC guitar? It's always neat to find something new... I need a fish scaler now. ;-)

We knew of Knifewear before it came to Edmonton because we had visited the Calgary store a few times. We were excited when we heard they were opening a store in Edmonton. We both like to cook so were hoping to get some nice knives for ourselves. They had an Opening Party when they first opened and this was my first time actually trying out the knives. I was very impressed by the staff knowledge of the knives and the high quality of the Japanese blades they offer. I ended up getting a medium length Chef's knife because it is multi-purpose and is the type of knife I use the most in the kitchen. I loved my Canadian Tire Santuko chef's knife and used it all the time so I figured getting something along that line would be my best bet for a first Japanese knife. I ended up getting the Fujimoto Nashiji Santoku 165mm. It was one of the more affordable knife lines but I really liked the look and feel of it. I now use it everyday for almost everything in the cooking department. These Japanese knives can sure cut! They can be sharpen to almost a razor thin edge. You can cut vegetables way thinner then you ever thought possible. You will want to get a honing rod so that you can keep your knife sharp. Every once in awhile you can take it back into the shop for a proper sharpening too. The store has lots of other cool kitchen gear as well. Stuff you won't find in your regular kitchen store. This place is a definite must check out if you do any work in a kitchen. The investment in a good kitchen knife is well worth it because they are probably the tools around the house that you use the most.

Awesome service! I don't know much about knives, but by the sounds of it the knives are great. What I can say is that they'll explain everything you need to know about getting someone a knife that suits their needs. I leaned so much in the half hour I spent with the salesman. He was friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about his work! We'll be going back to continue our kitchen knife collection. They also have cutting courses and sharpening courses! Great post knife gift idea.

I took the Advanced Bread Making class and it was great! We are split into teams and everyone makes a different style of loaf (or whatever it is that you are learning that day). You can walk around and see what everyone is doing and Celeste, the owner, is guiding you. At the end everyone shares in a family style meal with usually something additional that Celeste made. No clean up just good chats and good food. Take the recipes home and try them out. And if you're considering buying a big ticket item this is a great way to try out some of the machines cause we used so many of them so what a great way to try before you buy! The classes are in the evening so there is no worry if other people bugging staff. Be prepared to stay a little late since we are learning and then enjoying a meal. Totally worth it.

So I walked in and this store is amazing! First the staff were very friendly, everything was very clean and sanitized was provided at the front. There were lots of pots and pans and utensils. All sorts of cooking gadgets, storage gadgets, and baking pans. In the back of the store there is a pantry section, this is where I found the citric acid I needed. They have tons of spices and baking ingredients plus more in the pantry. I found the prices on these items quite reasonable considering this is a smaller local business that is family owned. The aisles were large as well! I highly recommend you check this place out if you're looking for any specialty items or neat gadgets or the next time you want to bake something! Barb's is a must shop!
