I have been TRYING to make a appointment for a little over a month now and still no luck. I don't have the leisure to drive all the way here just to make a appointment! You call the phone it rings and rings and rings. After calling three times straight someone FINALLY picks up, but they don't say hello, (I'm thinking did someone pick up or am I at voicemail?) so after like 5 seconds a woman practicality screams into the phone HEEELLLLLOOOO?! All loud and ghetto... like huh? I was rendered momentary speechless. Like who answers their business phone like that? First you don't answer the phone, then when you do answer the phone, you don't say anything, and then when you do say something you yell into it because the person on the other side didn't say anything. Like who does that? So, I gather myself and ask to make an appointment, the lady was like I'm doing someone's head, call later and hangs up... Bish wha? If that's the case hire a receptionist or something. F this place. I'm going to ask Groupon customer support Center if I can get a refund or some type of credit. This place is a blood joke. I have grown to dislike natural hair salons. I'm going to go in person to make an appointment because calling the phone doesn't work. **** Quick update I have posted a picture of their salon and I says for sale! WTH?! I left work early for this?! The place is a joke. I immediately called Groupon and told them my situation, they understand and refunded Groupon credits of the amount I paid. The owner Keisha... Is the extremely RUDE. I asked her why I was being charged $3 extra dollars to use my credit card. She was extremely nasty and said that she tells people the first time that the come and it is also on the miniature sign behind my head typed in a 5pt font. I was shocked by her attitude and I told her that I wasn't aware of it and it may help if she let people know upfront. She yelled at me and snap her head around and said "I told you the first time!". Hmmm...I explained again that she didn't ...I am very aware of where my money is being spent. She persisted being crude. She then told me to never come back and slammed the door on my back! Literally, got out of her seat and slammed the door in my back as i was leaving. Don't go there! I feel so sorry for her stylists. They probably miss out on so much money and great customer because of her lack of respect for customers and arrogance. Also, the reason why there are so many reviews on yelp around the same time period is because she offered 20 percent services. Too bad. She lost an awesome customer! Review before my 2nd experience: The salon has a nice atmosphere. They accept credit cards but not that the tip on a card so make sure you bring cash. I like the salon flow... You won't spend your entire day at the salon for a simple service which is what I like. They will make the right suggestions for your hair but won't pressure you. In Reply To Keisha: There is nothing here that is a lie. FACT: There was not a mention of the $3 charge until after you charged me. FACT: You were RUDE - if someone asks you where their hard earned money is going - why respond by snapping at your customer telling them "I told you the first time you came" depsite them telling you that this was their first time hearing it. FACT: YOU SLAMMED THE DOOR ON MY BACK and TOLD ME TO NEVER COME BACK! - - Its so unfortunate that you selected to act in a childish manner. This is my second time writing this review, hopefully it will make it on to this web site this time. I tried this salon because I wanted to try something closer to home. I arrived at the salon around 9:50 a.m. To my surprise the salon gates where down after being told by Keisha that she opens the salon around 9:00 a.m. with the stylists arriving at 10:00 a.m. Keisha arrives around 10:05 with a guy, who opens the gates. I am told to go inside and have a seat. At 10:15 a.m., I am told that my stylist must be stuck on the train. Finally, my stylist, Ashante', arrives at 10:26 a.m. She introduces herself and tell me to go downstairs. I have locs so I carry my own rods when I want a rod set. Ashante told me to leave the rods upstairs at her station. I should have left at this point. While Ashante' washed my my hair, I asked her how long she had been doing hair. Her response was "my first love is make-up and while I was in school they convinced me that I could do hair, too". I should have left at this point. She does give a GOOD shampoo though. It took Ashante' almost two hours to twist my new growth. I should have left at this point. After emerging from the basement, I am now seated at Ashante's station and she DOES NOT know how to set my locs on rods. She asks the only other stylist in the salon, Marcia, to help her and Marcia's immediate reply was "NO". I should have left at this point. Marcia was able to give me a tight rod set and the side that Ashante worked on, the rods were falling off my head. The same guy that opened the gates at 10:05 a.m. returns to the salon and see the two stylist working on my hair and notes the "teamwork" that is going on on my head. After seeing the look on my face, he just turns away. At the end of this fiasco, I am given a bill and asked by the guy, who says his name is Glen, how my service was. I tell him of my utter disgust with the service of Ashante' and the rude attitude that came from Marcia and he asks me what could be done to make my experience with the salon better. I tell Glen that he could make my bill go away but he has already swiped my credit card. After getting home, I realize that I left my bag of rods at the salon, so now I must go back. I took the rods out of my hair four days later and I had curls at the ends of my locs which are just past my shoulders. I call the salon about nine days later to tell Glen that I am going to pull op outside the salon and I would appreciate it if he could just come outside with the bag. Glen tells me that he is downstairs in the basement doing work on the salon and that I should come inside. Maybe three minutes later I pull up outside the salon and call to ask Glen to if he could just run out to my car as I am sitting right in front of the salon. With an attitude, he wants me to risk getting a parking summons to come inside the salon. I gave a one star rating because I could not give it NO stars. BIGGEST MISTAKE I MADE THIS YEAR. read more

I bought a Groupon for the rod set and deep treatment, and I must say Keisha did a great job on my hair. My flexi rod set was very bouncy and soft.. not hard and crunchy. I was in and out in a very reasonable time frame. I will purchase another Groupon for this service, seemingly that is the only way I can afford such service. The regular prices are a bit high for me to keep up with on a norm. But I will highly recommended this salon and Keisha. read more

I brought a groupon to try this place out. I had been trying to find a good salon that specialized in natural hair for a while now. I had the best experience with Keisha. She did an amazing job! I got the wash, deep condition, flat iron and trim. I was very skeptical about the flat iron actually getting my hair straight how I wanted but my hair wad not only was it straight, it was flowing and bouncing. Keisha gave me advice throughout the process on ways I could better care for my natural hair. She educated me on products without pushing the products she uses. Knaps - It came out beautiful - Hair Salons Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

I went here for the first time last week for loc maintenance and a pin-up style. The scheduling was straight forward, the lady who scheduled was nice. She called to confirm the appointment I wanted and called the day before as a reminder. My hair was done by Marsha who was nice, personable and talented. What I liked most is that she didn't come across judgmental about the unkept state of my hair (I just had a baby, it hasn't been done in a while) and she took her time to do it despite being tired and it extending past closing hours. I went out of town with the style that I got and everyone (friends, strangers, TSA, etc) commented continuously on how awesome my hair was. Even a week later and slightly broken in, I'm still getting compliments all day everyday. Long story short, let Marsha style you. I checked out her Instagram after my appointment and she is very talented. I intend to return. I found the salon to be spacious, clean, and comfortable. The decor was beautiful. The other patrons were very nice and made it a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. This was a plus for me as the environment would have immediately turned me off. (I really don't like hair salons, btw.) 4 stars, only because the prices are higher than other local services. I polled my loc'd coworkers long ago about what they pay to maintain their hair. But, idk, maybe it's worth it. You get what you pay for. read more

Was recommended by a friend since they did a wonderful job for her. I arrived 10 minutes before my appointment was scheduled for and she was able to take me which was great!. The lady who did my hair was kind. Two positives there. Only negatives were there was a lot of miscommunication (there were times I did not understand her questions/she possibly did not hear me) and my natural hair of 5+ years became heat damaged. I have a large curly afro and I was looking for a place to get it shaped and trimmed. A passed this place and decided to drop in. The salon is beautiful and clean, but unfortunately that did not outweigh rude staff. I was greeted by a pleasant receptionist, but that's as far as the pleasant thing goes with this place. The other staff (a man and the only stylist there that day, Marsha) were rude and unaccomodating. I asked questions and was met with a condescending tone and rudeness. This place may be good at what they do, but I will never know because I refuse to have my hair done by rude stylists. Go somewhere else where they actually care about their customers. UPDATED (3/28/11) I was contacted by the manager, Keisha, with a very kind email, urging me to give me business a second try. Mind you i asked the owner what time she would open the shop. When i ask'd her what happened she replied its hee shop and she can open up whatever time she wanted. I decided to go to get my mini fro trimmed and when I requestes a hair cleanser and not shampoo. she informed me that they had ran out and she bought some sort of organic substitute. I wasn't too thrilled with that but I was already at the shampoo bowl. I ended up getting Mohawk braids with a coil out and really liked the result... Kenata did an amazing job at the end with my natural...nice environment and quite since it was Monday. read more

Keisha hooked me up! Clean facility. I used a groupon and felt I got the royal treatment. My hair (natural) never felt so healthy! I got a wash, cut, deep conditioner and a flat iron (no burning smell I usually get when the Dominican shop does my hair). Without groupon I'm not sure I would hv found Keisha even though she is 10 min walk from home. Her regular prices are hefty but I might have to bite the bullet bc no one has ever done such a great job on my natural hair. Today was my first time at this establishment and I definitely plan on attending more often. I called the shop last night about an hour before they closed to book an appointment. I told the person on the other end that this is my first time visiting the shop, I would like 2 strand twists and wondered if they could recommend me to somewhere who is experienced in that department. My sister transitioned from cornrows to 2 strand twists so I, the big brother wanted to try it out. I arrived on time (10:00) and was greeted by the shop owner Keisha and a barber. A few minutes later, I was in the chair and was getting my hair done. I appreciate the care that was shown and taken by Keisha. I told her that I was looking for a new style that would repair damage done unto me by past stylists and my own from not being properly self educated on how to take care of my natural hair. That is when Keisha came to the rescue lol and was promptly educated me on the steps that needed to be taken to reduce breakage and keep your hair growing such as drinking plenty of water, eating plenty of greens, taking in a lot of protein, as well as treating your hair with protein treatments. Vanessa H., is absolutely right, "you get what you pay for, because it is well worth it." I don't agree with the other reviews concerning the owners attitude. I had a pleasant experience. read more

So I was contacted by a stylist via thumbtack. She seemed nice enough and told me that she could do the Havana twist I was requesting. I had an interview to go on and I wanted to wear something other than my afro-puff. Unfortunately you can not always believe what someone tells you. So I show up for my appointment and she starts to wash and condition my hair. She also lets me know that she would have to run out to buy the hair. Granted when I was talking to her on the phone she said that the salon already had the hair. This should have been my first sign but I'm a laid back person so I didn't stress it. So after she starts braiding my hair I noticed how uneven some of the braids were. I figured that she would clean them up after braiding and gave her the benefit of the doubt. Boy was I wrong! She told me that he had 10:30 appointment so she would finish her up first because the other girl wanted an easy style. That took a good hour! Then once I got back into the chair she rushed through my hair to do another client! I walked out of there looking like a Rastafarian mess. Each braid was uneven and they even started unraveling! I was horrified by the lack of skill and attention that she paid to my hair! I'm not saying all the stylists are like this but Rene certainly did not know what she was doing. So if you go here please avoid using her! I had to go to Hempstead to get someone to salvage the mess she made. It was a complete waste of my money and time. read more

I experienced a minimal wait to be seen by my assigned stylist (Kenyatta). Kenyatta was pleasant and professional, offering options and explanations are she executed my cut. I used to go all the way to Jersey or Philly to get my hair done because of the NYC prices but I decided to check out Brooklyn and figured I can find an affordable hair salon. They took me as a walk in and greeted me kindly and I left with my hair looking fabulous ! I've gone 2 or 3 times since then and haven't been disappointed. I only heard about this place via Groupon. I purchased the wash/deep condition/flat iron with Keisha deal. Hair "magician" Keisha was excellent! She thoroughly washed my natural hair then applied the deep condition to every part of my hair -- parting it and make sure every inch was covered -- then sat me under the dryer. Quality products used! She asked questions about my routine and hair issues and gave me feedback on my hair from her perspective. Unfortunately I was so tired after working long hours the night before and the morning of my appt that I conked out under the dryer and in her styling chair. When she woke me up I looked AMAZING! She flat ironed my hair so well and put some curls in it -- my hair looked better than ever. I used the word magician because my hair is very short in the back and front but below shoulder length everywhere else and she hooked up a style that hid those flaws! No enticement to cut my hair to 'even it out'. Trust me, she knows her stuff! And best of all, my hair did not revert during the rest of the 80+ degree humid day, during my showers, nor the next day on Sabbath at church the ENTIRE day including a concert in the evening in which I ministered. I received SOOOO many compliments at church. Normally I pull my hair in a bun even after having had it flat ironed other places because the heat and humidity always causes major shrinkage. Not so after Keisha was done with it! Everyone loved my 'do' which looked even better that day after I took it out of my wrap. A GREAT experience!! Want more? There was a mixup with my appt date/time and believe me, I HAD to have my hair done that day. Keisha worked me into her schedule for the day. What a professional! I used to be a die hard Dominican Salon fan, until I met my girl Marsha. I began doing my hair with her over a year ago and I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am. I have soft curly hair which I used to perm whenever I used to go to the Dominican Salon. In reality the texture of my hair does not need a perm and I learned that with Marsha. I rock my natural hair with an awesome Red color that Marsha put together. My hair is healthier than it's ever been and all thanks to her. She is very thorough with everything she does. When she recommends a cut, DO IT! If she recommends a color, DO IT! She is truly wonderful. I have referred 7 ladies to her and they are all pleased and still styling with her. Seriously I am writing this review and trying not to freak out at the same time. I have been to Knaps before and I love Marcia, she is really wonderful. My only complaints before was that sometimes I had to wait a long time before being seen and the expected long block of time you need to set aside for an appointment but what happened today makes me think that I need to find another salon. About two weeks to a week and a half ago I walked into the salon and asked if they would be open on Columbus Day, I made it a point to not assume or not if they would open and asked. I spoke to two individuals, the second person actually looked in the computer at the front, I also asked if Marcia would be in to do my hair because she is nice and does my hair well when I come in. I was told yes they would be open and yes Marcia would be there to do my hair so I left the salon with an appointment for 1 pm on Monday. Flash forward to today, I receive a message at 5:39 pm, stating that for whatever reason that I had an appointment for Monday with Marcia but that they would be closed and also that Marcia would not be there until Thursday and I should call and reschedule. What! The whole reason why I made the appointment was that I'm going back to work on Tuesday and wanted to get my hair done beforehand and I couldnt make it to any salon on Saturday. So now I'm in a situation where I am gonna pray that I can find someplace on Sunday or Monday that will not totally mess up my hair so that I can look my best for the first day of my career. I still can't believe that! The people manning the front area should know when the shop is closed and when it is not and if the requested stylist will be in. Although the salon is less than 2 blocks from my home, I'm gonna find somewhere else, I need to know that I will have the appointment that everyone agreed on. read more

I found a deal on groupon for this salon. I personally walked in to make my appointment for Keisha. Keisha was polite and worked around my schedule...however she scheduled me at a time half hour before a client and when I arrived at that time she had two customers and one still to come. I arrived at 3:30pm and didn't leave until 11:30 pm. (I had my newborn son and my 9 year old to help me with my newborn-not a problem as far as salon goes they had lots of space and wasn't against policy ). Keisha didn't touch my hair until around 6 pm. She shampood it..conditioned it and sat me under the dryer for about an hour(clearly just to pass time) . Then i waited some more. .About 2 hours later she rod set my hair and put me under the dryer. She knew my hair was thick and needed about 2 hours to dry and for the curls to fully set, (she even joked that itd take 5 hours) yet she said it was dry after one hour .I came upstairs when the dryer stopped tto ask her to "check" to see if it was dry....she just took out the rods clearly she didn't care at this point it was 11 pm..my roots were puffy and my ends curly. I hated my hair. .not my style my hair she made me feel as if nothing could be done for me because after 8 hours in a salon my hair was still a mess. After one week of pretending I had a nice hair style which i kept in a ponytail I finally detangled the madness, it took me hours to detangle it. I will never recommend this salon or return. No other stylist had clients waiting that long...they're clients seemed satisfied but since Keisha is the owner it makes everyone look bad. She needs time management read more

I decided to give Knaps a try after I purchased a Groupon to get a wash, deep condition, flat iron and trim for $39...quite the deal. I had been wearing a wash and go for about a week prior to the appointment, so I was unsure how Keisha, my stylist, was going to react. I should mention that I have A LOT of hair and most stylists are taken aback when they see it. This didn't bother Keisha one bit, or at least I didn't notice. The wash was great. She really got in there and cleaned my scalp. But what really set the whole service off was the flat ironing!!! I don't know what kind of flat iron she used, but at the end, my hair was LAYED!!!!! I could not have been happier with how my hair turned out. I told her I would gladly pay the full price for this service. Only knocking off one star because of the wait. My appointment was at 3p, but she didn't start working on me until about 3:30p. That's not enough to turn me away...I will definitely be back. read more

I had an appointment with the owner Keisha back in May 2016 and I wouldn't go back. The only thing I could say she did good was give me a trim other than that, I didn't like how she washed my hair, detangled my hair or styled my hair. She simply didn't do a good job, she handled my hair extremely rough and it wasn't that serious. I should have been more cautious like actually go in for a consultation before my actual appointment or at least been more vocal during the process to let her know that she was being rough, so I take the blame for that (I now know what to do before a salon visit). I've been tired of going to the local salons and getting inconsistent results, so i tried a salon that a reputation tied to its name and ever since i tried this shop I've been consistently going there. with my stylist summer, she has been nursing my natural hair back to health. sad thing is that she left, as soon a i got attached to her and work :/ these are not Dominican hair salon prices lol, but you get what you pay for! even as a college student on a tight budget, I've managed to rearrange my expenses because it is well worth it. read more

I was recommended this place by a friend who was amazing dreadlocks. So i went there to start mines thinking I'd be there 5hrs tops, ending up being 10hrs. I guess some stylists there Marsha don't enjoy being a hair stylist and don't understand that their job requires patience. I found this shop on Groupon and was excited to check it out. The shop is nicely kept and Keisha is awesome. She takes her time to find out what products you're using and what you are trying to do. If you're looking for a rush job don't bother. If you're in a hurry tell her in advance because she's giving you the full treatment. She's an artist so don't shortchange yourself by being impatient. got a groupon. it expired because Im a very busy working professional. when I called to ask the "lady" what avenue to proceed to next. A raspy, harsh voice appeared on the phone asking me "why you took so long to make an appointment?" huh? why do you care? you are getting paid aren't you???? anyways. the groupon is 35 dollars. for a wash and flat iron. after she spinned it she basically stated that it will cost 75 dollars! WHAT??? okay because I was busy with work, and sick periodically. how does it jump to that!?!?! they get to keep my 35 because with such nasty attitudes and trying to scam. they will not lay a finger on my beautiful 27" hair! now they have increased their price to 55 dollars on the groupon. so if your groupon expires its like what, over $100! lol. yeah I'll pass and do my hair myself. Im probably better off. soooo expecting this "lady" to take time to "respond" take less time being offended and more time having better customer service and honest business. read more

I was not someone that was crazy about styling my hair. I have fine, frizzy curly hair and I would wind up leaving it out or in a ponytail. So, a good friend of mine recommended Marsha since I loved how she styled her hair. I definitely needed a change so I took the chance. When I met with Marsha she told me the best for my hair is to keep it short to show fullness in my hair. I was nervous as hell when she said that since I am not someone who would wear a short hairdo but I went for it and she made me feel very comfortable. After she was done, I was so surprised how great my hair looks curly or straight. She also recommended great products for my hair (Moroccan Oil is the best!!!!!) and now I feel much more confident with my new hair and I am getting tons of compliments with the new look. Marsha is a fantastic hairstylist and I will definitely be a loyal customer to her :)....FYI she is also great with coloring and highlighting hair...My mom loves her too! read more

I just went to Knaps this past Monday for the 2nd or 3rd time - I work with Summer she is fantastic she came in on her day off which was also a holiday and really took great care of me. For the caliber of work that she does the cost is very reasonable and my hair is looking soft and silky (I got my weave taken out, a touch up, Moroccan oil treatment, and then a full head re installed) - the only bummer was that I was there for 8 hrs + but in the end so worth it - Ill certainly be back at Knaps in 3 weeks :-) read more

About a month ago I had time in between classes to go to this salon for a trim. I told the stylist that I have a texturizer and transitioning to O'Natural. Might I also add that my hair is naturally curly and anyone who knows anything about curly hair you can't use any and every product on it. What might work for one woman won't necessarily work on another depending on your hair texture. So...she trims my hair (which came out pretty good ), and proceeds to style my hair using a product that DOES NOT work with my hair. After a ten minute blow dry on semi-damp hair, that was carelessly put in a two strand twist, she tells me that she's done. SERIOUSLY!!! I was so unhappy with the way she styled it. To be perfectly honest I don't think that the young lady, though sweet, didn't know how to style my hair. She didn't pay any attention to my curl pattern, and I ended up looking like Chubaka. I know that the owner of this salon has gotten very negative feedback, but I didn't have any issues with her or any of her staff. My main complaint is that my stylist didn't pay attention to my hair texture, therefore resulting in a horrendous hairstyle. Sorry Knaps....you get 1 star from me :-( read more
