It all looks gorgeous - - and the prospect of a mix in a box of the pretty fried thingies heaped in the front display for 4.50 was irresistible. Got a mix of "shrimps", calamaris, and mussels.
Shrimps really aren't straight like a log, are they. That's probably why the log-shaped shrimps, despite their nice batter crusty texture, seemed like some vague substance surrounded by crusty batter. The calamaris, if you strip back all the crusty breading to find an actual little skinny ring, were not only minimal, but mushy. The mussels were the best, because they did have more dark funky squishy mussels-like quality than the faux shrimp and the skinny mushy calamari. And the mussels did have some sort of vague flavor.
The shrimps and calamari had no flavor, other then battery crustiness. This is not proper seafood - - it is a crusty batter vehicle, with mushy interior that reminds you somehow of seafood, but doesn't taste of it. It suggests seafood, but ultimately it is faux toy food. read more
