We did not have a reservation, but luckily they managed to fit us in at a shared table. This place is extremely popular so I would highly recommend making a reservation. To start, we ordered the cod croquettes to share. Perfectly fried and golden brown, these croquettes were absolutely delicious and the accompanying sauce paired perfectly. For our entrées, I ordered the fish and chips while my husband ordered the creamy fish soup and my father ordered the fish gratin. All three dishes were fresh and delicious, but I think the fish gratin was my favorite. So if you find yourself an Oslo looking for a delicious meal down by the water, come check out Fiskeriet.

The outside seatings were very full. We had fish and chips, creamy fish soup, and the langoustine special. All are very good, especially the fish soup with salmon and mussels. Fish & Chips is the famous dish there. The langoustine plate came with 2 langoustines halved and some salad. , Service was fine, it was busy we were told the food could take up to 30 minutes to come out but it came sooner.

The Salmon was another seafood restaurant on our list of places to eat while in Oslo…read more It was located in Aker Brygge which was a newer and expensive neighborhood. There was both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We did not have a reservation but came early enough to snag an inside table. It was the right choice as the rain really started to come down about that time. One caveat was that we had to wrap up our meal within 1.5 hours which wasn't a problem for us. The menu was unique as it was printed inside a newspaper. One just had to flip pages to find the drink, food and dessert menus. Given the namesake of the restaurant we opted to try three different salmon preparations: Our favorite dish was the salmon tataki which was lightly grilled in a ponzu sauce. If it was larger then we would've gladly eaten this as a main dish. The grilled salmon came in second as it was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment, creamy with truffle flavors. Our least favorite was the hot smoked salmon and pasta salad. There was an unusual taste to the pasta salad that detracted from the salmon. Service was just ok and it took a long while before we could get any attention to close our check. While tipping wasn't expected in Norway, the Salmon's credit card terminals start with a tipping option screen before you can pay. If you're curious about salmon farming in Norway then check out the exhibit at the other end of the restaurant.

The Salmon does an excellent job of showcasing the fresh and wonderful quality of salmon in many different dishes. The tasting plate was one of the best dishes they had. There were three different pieces of salmon with different accompaniment. I don't remember the exact cuts, but one was Lox, and the other was a cold smoke. My guest got a ginger salmon salad she loved. We also got the torched salmon nigiri to taste. The hype is real! This is definitely a must try! They get extremely busy, so a reservation is a must! They had indoor and outdoor seating with a heated patio (it was a bit chilly when we were there).

If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian,…read moreat least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. Elias Mat & Sant is located in the sentrum, Oslo's city center, so is walking distance to many sites and attractions. I visited here after walking from the palace along Karl Johans Gate as the restaurant is located off this main drag. Make reservations here for the restaurant is small and intimate. It was time to try reindeer while in the Nordic region of the world, so here I did. I ordered the reindeer stew, which was delicious. The reindeer stew was similar to a beef stew, but the reindeer is leaner, so didn't taste as heavy, which is a good thing. Over some mashed potatoes with a gravy and herbs and a side of lingonberry, it completed the meal. It also came with a side of complimentary bread, which is not always the case at other restaurants. That was a nice bonus though because the bread helped soaked up the stew. Perfection!

There are not allot of space so I wouldn't recommend this place more then a group of eight people. Ordered an "Burger Grosch" and this meal is what I struggled with. I never really thought about what a burger is before now and this so called burger are not one. But with that said this meal was really good. If I would say a few short sentences about this it would be that it tasted a bit like a Norwegian summer. The meet had the good taste of a typical meat-patty but with a more fulfilling thickness. The cabbage was crisp and fresh and I do believe that it was the main reason why it, for me, had a taste of summer. Alto the boiled potatoes did also effect this since it was prepared in the same way as the potatoes we have on midsummer. I know that "summer" are not an good example of the taste of a thing but in this I just cant find a more fitting word. The downside of the cabbage together with the dressings was probably that it got quite soggy and the wholemeal bread got destroyed, at the end I was thinking that it was good that it came in a deep plate.
