I golf at a lot of golf courses but when I get the rare opportunity to golf at the KMAS Klipper course I jump at the chance of playing there. We went on a Monday and couldn't get a tee time until 2:00 because of an earlier tournament. The weather was a beautiful overcast day where we didn't have to worry about sunscreen. The 13th and 14th holes were along the coastline with views that make playing here worth it. The greens were super slow on this day and you could easily lose your ball in the rough, but it was a very enjoyable day with close friends. Kaneohe Klipper offers a challenging 18 hole golf course situated in Kaneohe Bay. What makes this course tough is the wind as of course this is the Windward side of the island. Accuracy is the name of the game at Kaneohe Klipper although it can help if you are are long hitter as some greens are pretty wide. But bring extra balls as if you hit OB it can be hard to track down your ball. The views on 13th are breath taking and its probably one of the best views on a golf course. Man, this course is hard. Despite me not losing a ball, it was tough as a first time on this course. They told me where to aim and I did it, but bad pitching and putting did me in. Klipper is possibly the prettiest golf course on Oahu. You need to be military, or if you live here you can join the Public Partners Program for $10/yr to get access to the base. I recently played in a UCP tournament here on a gorgeous perfect weather day and almost forgot I was playing golf. It was a scramble and we started on 14, which I think is the prettiest hole on the entire course. Slice the ball too far and you'll be at the beach. We ended on 13, which is the second prettiest hole. There are some tricky holes where you have blind tee shots. some holes are straight uphill, the par 3s are deceptively hard, but I didn't lose any balls which was a miracle. Nothing fancy going on with the golf carts (bring your own range finder), no food carts, I didn't see any toilets except for portable ones on the course, but overall, this is such a fantastic course to play. Golf course reviews. Tough to rate I use a scale of 5 stars the PGA is ready to have a tournament on the course. Perfect cuts no dead spots great sand in the bunkers a well architected course. This course could be a four when all the bunkers and greens are in perfect condition. I rate this at a a three which is pretty good. The greens were punched about 4 weeks ago and in very good shape. A little Woolley but compared to many of the muni courses much better. The fairways are in good shape for the most part and the bunkers are greatly improved considering not maintained during COVID. The layout is average with the 10th hole and green an example of a drunk bulldozer driver carving out the hole. The fairways all slope to the right on this par five then you come to the hole that is greatly sloped to the left with bunkers on the right. Just a little screwy. Of course this course has the best and I do mean the best ocean views on 13 an 14 on Oahu and are rated the best on all US military courses so a must play just for them. The little cafe is great for breakfast or lunch. You must take your own ice or refreshments out since there is only jugs of cold water dispensers available during play. Though private coolers etc are disallowed they don't enforce it. The 9th hole Halfway house is still closed. Again you'll need to bring anything you need on the course. And if you spray you shots you will need plenty of amo as the rough is really rough. And the ocean holes all have marked hazard stakes but the ones with green tops are considered sensitive areas and you are not allowed to enter. Years ago they found buried human remains there. So for the sake of respect stay out. Overall I enjoy the course have been playing it for about 30 plus years. So I've seen really great conditions to very poor. Right now it's pretty good. But once the rains start hitting it the second hole in particular becomes a 6 to 1 inch deep lake through much of the fairway. I'm retired military so easy to get on and through the gate. Access is hard or challenging without a military sponsor. And in predictable because the US Military does reduce or stop all non DoD access at times. read more

They call this course " The poor man's Pebble Beach" but having been to Pebble Beach I think this is way prettier and better priced. Only caveat is you have to be military or know military or civilian affiliate. I also like the weather here, way better. 'm a warm weather person so consider this review with that in mind. read more

I used to think this was the greatest course when we lived here 10 years ago. Obviously things have changed over the time since we left. The fairways are spotty, and the greens are furry. The tee boxes are beat up too. The view of the ocean from the back nine holes along the water is still spectacular, though. The biggest issue was the two gentleman working in the Pro Shop. You don't feel welcome talking to these gentlemen. You feel like you're communicating with your drill instructor all over again. The vibe is terrible. They are very demanding and just smirk at you when they are barking the rules of the course to you and your family. My warning to future golfers of this course, make sure your child of any age has a collared shirt. Also, make sure the rental clubs are correctly in their place in the bags before you can get back your driver's license. To note, my wife has been working in the food and beverage services at a golf course in San Diego for the past four years and my oldest son works in the Pro Shop at this course, too. read more

Hands down the best military golf course in the Department of Defense as well as one of the most challenging golf courses I have ever played. Now I know why former president Obama is such a fan of this course. My friend and I played on Friday and they had a promotion, $15 you only pay for the cart and that was awesome. They also had demo day and most golf club brands were present and allowed you to try all the latest irons, drivers and hybrids available on the market, which is great if you are in the market for any new club. It was great because I was able to pick up a new Callaway 2 hybrid rogue for 20% the retail price and no tax and no shipping. The front is really nice and fairly easy and fun to play, the par 5 8th can be a challenge if you have a bad shot off the tee. Once you make the turn you better be ready for a challenging back nine that is going to test your skill level. Holes 12-15 offer pebble beach like views and challenges and some of the most memorable holes you will ever play in golf. Recommend bring some extra balls. The customer service from the pro shop to the starter is some of the best you will experience at any base golf course on the island. The entire staff works hard and are friendly and professional and really display the Aloha Spirit. Thank you Kaneohe Klipper for one of the best memorable golfing experiences in my life time. We went on a Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We each ordered a Burger and were stuffed! Specifically, we ordered A 8. Burger A is a good size and 8 stands for blue cheese sauce and bacon as a topping. Super yummy. Honestly though, the real star was the Tea. It was so delicious! We mixed ours! Very disappointed in this course. First of all the carts are junk No GPS, no cooler , no towels , no tees ... Bare bones No marshall. I was a single playing behind "6 sum" , yes 6 guys . They were so slow and oblivious to any other people . Spent more time looking for their balls than actually making contact with it . They never waved waved me on or acknowledged me as a single player. It took 3 hours on the front , I finally gave up at 15 and left. The beautiful holes on the back that are ocean front truly are magnificent but it will take a lot for me to go back any time soon. read more

The Klippers is an 18 hole championship golf course located on Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe. It's tucked in the back of the base and very easy to find. They have a very strict tee time reservation policy that they follow and can be viewed on their website. I called exactly at the time stated for my category and got the tee time that I wanted. Hands down this course is by far my favorite military course to play on the island. The front nine holes have a view of the Ko'olau Mountains and the back nine a gorgeous ocean front view. I teed off twice on holes 13, 14, and 15 because the view was so spectacular. Tip 1) My check in on yelp came with a FREE basket of balls to hit at the driving range. 2) Golf Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 3pm and you will receive one free pupu and one beer. Before coming to this course, if you are not military, be sure to come early to get your one day guest pass. It might take a while so don't come just before your tee time. This course is amazing, although can be a bit more difficult when it's windy. When you get to the back 9 (which everyone talks about) you will be amazed at the views. BUT DON'T GET DISTRACTED! Maintenance is very good although some holes are really close to either the road or houses so be careful. **TIP** The pu'uone (sand dunes) are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The sand dunes are a ancient Hawaiian burial site and they ask not to remove any stones or other items from where they lie out of respect and it is also a federal and state crime to disturb native burial sites. Just a thought before you climb up these dunes to take a better picture or something. Driving range looked like it was off grass and they had a very large putting green for practice. read more

Klipper is a great place for a round of golf! The course is challenging and they do a wonderful job at hosting tournaments. Kevin is really friendly as well as approachable so if there are ever any issues don't be afraid to talk to him. They've had some major issues with Holes 2 & 4 which is the reason for my 4 Stars but hole 13 is absolutely beautiful. It's very intimidating for players with big fades and slicers! I wish they'd setup a Men's League and have more tournaments like Red/White/Blue, Bloody Sunday, Superintendents Revenge, or and other various types but the course is popular enough they don't need these to attract customers. read more

The lady at the counter named Dino talked down to us like we're cattles. I had high hopes with this golf course so I brought my visiting father and brother but Dino is super disrespectful with every question we had that I had to bring up to the manager. I honestly can't believe she's still working there after all the past negative reviews she had here. Other than that, everyone else was helpful and friendly. This is definitely one of the well kept nicer looking courses on the east side and the price to play is decent; however, the course is plagued by Slow Players. You can literally come to Klipper any day of the week, and there will be players who aren't great or those who are oblivious and act as if they're the only ones playing. This combination on top of allowing the general public to also play on the course is really bad for game play. The course does have marshalls, but there isn't much that can be done if the entire course is backed up. It seems like there's way too many tee times being allowed than the course can handle. read more

Beautiful view of the best beaches from the back 9. (White sand, clean, empty! We civilians can't get to the beach as it is accessible through military property.) As to the course, the greens were a little slow;and sime looked and felt like it was recently airated. The fairways as beautiful as anything! It's not the easiest course to golf at and is definitely the most scenic. Oh, I didn't see any beverage carts so I'm not sure if beer or alcohol is allowed on the course. I'm going to write an updated review because I think it's important to address the other low ratings. The greens were in terrible condition for a period, but are now beautiful. They aerated the greens 2 weeks ago and you can see its coming back nicely. I heard it was because of a faulty new sprinkler system which spread moldy water and ruined the grass but it's worth another visit if you played during this time. I think it is also worth noting that where it might be raining heavily on other parts of the island, mokapu peninsula sits out and out of alot of the rain, so it's rare that I've had to call it in because of rain. That said, when it does rain, the pumps dont really help and it's best to wait. Regarding people's comments about crowded conditions, I play on sundays first out on the back nine and it is a peaceful prelude to church service later in the morning, its beautiful peaceful and fun. Holidays and weekends can get crowded, and if you are a single or double, you often end up joining up because it does get backed up. I think sterner marshalling could improve this because it is usually people with poor etiquette who can't control their balsl but insist on playing from back tees and dont keep up pace of play or play more than one or pick up. If I'm out practicing and its empty I might be seen doing all of the above, but never when its crowded. This causes others to get impatient and try to hit balls into the next group which is dangerous and rude. I like the golf shop for its selection, tax free, and sales rack. I liked the clinics and demo days they've offered. I like the pros and you can find a pro to suit your learning style and personality. Not sure why some have complained about price, you can buy play cards, and wait for 15% sales to get it even more discounted, or book the twilight specials with round, cart and pupus and drink for like $30. I think Kapolei, Hawaii Kai, Leilehua, etc charge more Hiilton turtle bay, Royal Hawaiian and Prince are way more expensive but I dont like to pay more to meet snobby people, I play golf because I enjoy the game. Lastly, I love the native flowers, birds (a'eo, kolea, 'iwa, night heron, coots) scenery on the course, as an artist, it is my favorite course. It gets 5 stars because while the occasional slow day could be improved by better marshalling or start times that acknowledge poor etiquette of weekend warriors, compared to other supposedly more exclusive courses, they do a better job on all the other points. read more

Gotta say that for a very novice golfer (3rd time overall) I must say I was blown away by this course. The one thing that sets it apart is the view from the 13th-16ish holes...absolutely stunning! Well maintained, fun, and scenic 18 hole course. Greens are very hard, however, in terms of difficulty. Lots of up and downhill puts makes precision putting necessary. I had about 7 holes in which I had to 3 putt :/ good to play with a 4-some so you can read the putts from each other. Reservation was a bit confusing since I was a civilian trying to reserve a tee time 4 days before, but was told I had to have called in 5 days before in order for my name to be given to the front gate. Example, I called Sunday wanting to play on Thursday, but I couldn't since the earliest my name could be submitted to the front gate was FridAy (5 days after the day I called). I was able to get on with a friend who could sponsor/sign for me to get a pass for my car on the day I wanted. If the website provided a detailed information on the reservation process, that would have helped. The twilight $45 after 1pm rate with a free beer and appetizer was worth it! Course took a little under 5 hours and it was packed so we got paired with a another 2-some. Course does get busy so be prepared to be paired up during the twilight hours. Food and appetizer was excellent as well! Restaurant is right there on the course so there is no need to think about where/what to eat after a long hot day. Front 9 is pretty flat with the wind being a big factor since it's coming off of the ocean. Back nine holes 13-16 have great ocean views that makes any double bogey something to not get upset about. Does get really windy though. Holes 14-16 have some blind spot tee shots, so using an iron/3 wood would be recommended. Grass on the rough is deceivingly thick and fluffy. Taking one club higher than usual is recommended. Overall it's a fun, challenging course with wonderful views. Course and greens are well maintained and staff are very friendly and helpful. Cart was running out of battery, but after calling the front desk, they sent a replacement in just a few minutes. Will go again after I figure out the reservation system. read more

This spot in 2015 was the best place to golf on the island. I scheduled three days in a row here those week, and I will never go back. The greens are like sand boxes, with holes everywhere. The fairways are beyond trashed. The rough isn't even cut. Only reason it's getting two stars is because the View on the course is still amazing. It's not worth 50$ at all. Go pay 10$ more and play Kapolei its what klipper used to be. read more

This golf course is truly beautiful, the staff are friendly and efficient, and the views from the oceanside holes are absolutely breathtaking. All that said, however if you need to rent clubs in order to play, rent them from another company. My husband's rental clubs we're pretty ratty but usable; the clubs I rented they should have been ashamed to charge more than a dollar for. They were truly an embarrassment. The grips were worn smooth, some were torn and had holes in them, and the driver had a huge dent in it. We mentioned to the staff what a sorry state the rentals were in, and while they agreed with us that they were in sad shape, they didn't seem to be able to do anything about it. Crappy rental clubs notwithstanding, if you're able to play this course, make a point to do so. The wind makes it extra challenging, but on some holes your drives will go on and on and on. read more

My husband and I are lucky to call Klipper our backyard golf course. We have been regularly playing this course 3 to 4 times a week since 2012. Up until the middle of 2015 this course was very well maintained with beautiful greens and fairways and the best staff possible! Ever since the change in staff the customer service has gone a bit downhill but they are still friendly and helpful. The pro shop is a bit on the expensive side, but it is not more than other ProShops and has a decent inventory of golf items. It is also good to note that the quality of the greens and fairways has also gone down in the past year, however, this does not change that it is a very picturesque golf course. This course an intermediate course, with some holes that are more challenging than others. Tips: -If you are e5 and below you can get free range balls by taking the golf etiquette course. -If you are looking for the cheapest time to play it would be sunset on the weekdays which is usually after 4 o'clock. -At the beginning of the year they usually offer a deal for the players card which gives you 15 to 25% off green fees. -They also offer golf boards if you're into that sort of thing it's like a motorized skateboard / scooter. -Busiest times are holidays and weekend morning and early afternoon, Saturdays and Sundays after 3 the course starts to clear up -If you're looking for a deal on a new set of clubs ask when their next golf demo days are. They have different companies come out and usually give between 10-25% off clubs/golf accessories ++ they aren't taxed since you're on base!! -If you are planning a tee time call in advance to ask if there is going to be a tournament, they tend to have tournaments any day of the week and a couple times a month -If you are looking for cheaper range balls and you live on MCBH Bay View golf course gives you three times the amount of golf balls for the same price -If you are looking for the best views the back 9 is awesome -And if you are unfamiliar with the windward side it is usually a bit damp compared to the west side which means that you can expect a little bit of mud underneath the grass so be prepared read more

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. The thirteenth hole is touted as "home of the Best Hole according to the DOD"... well, it doesn't matter how great a hole is if it takes forever to get to it! No course is beautiful enough to survive playing a 9 hour round. At the pace we were playing, that's how long our round would have taken. A more appropriate description of this course is "SLOWEST COURSE IN THE DOD"... maybe they could even go for the world title. This is the kind of place that makes me think yelp should offer the option of 0, or negative stars. This place is truly THAT bad. In terms of management, this is easily the worst golf course anyone in our group has ever played at, and two people in our group have been playing golf for twenty years. While the other reviewers have commented on how beautiful the course is, I wouldn't really know as I only played 4 holes after an hour and forty five minutes. We should have known at the 1st tee when two other groups pulled up at the same time we did, and said they were given the same tee time as we had. By the time we approached the 4th hole,a par three, there was a group on the green, a group on the tee, two other groups waiting and then US. Yes. You read that right. FIVE GROUPS surrounding a hole. Not to mention the fact that as far as we could see, there were 2 groups on the 5th hole and 3 on the 6th hole. To make things worse, while we were waiting on the 4th hole, we watched the two groups behind us skip to the 6th hole instead of waiting on the 4th, which meant that we were now royally screwed behind even MORE people. I have never seen a course so poorly managed. We called the pro shop to find out if we could go off the back 9, and they advised that we should drive through to the next open hole. we drove through, only to find disgruntled golfers at each turn, all complaining that the course was too full, SO slow, and downright awful. The group at the 10th hole complained that their round was taking forever and the 1st hole was probably the best place to be (if there was one). We decided to go back to the pro shop and asked for a refund. The "best" that "Kevin", the poor excuse for a pro shop manager, could offer was a gift certificate for a future round. WHY on earth would I want to come back and play such a poorly managed golf course I asked him? He whimpered that it was the best he could offer, so instead of wasting any more of my time at this hell hole, we took it and left. I think the worst part was that Kevin wasn't willing to admit that he was wrong and that a 9 hour round wasn't over the top. The pro shop let too many people on the course at once and didn't have a starter or ranger managing course play. I don't know what the staff there are doing, but they aren't working, that's for sure. So- if you don't know any better, are a beginner or don't mind slow golf, I'm sure this place is beautiful and you'll have a blast. But for everyone else-- save your time and money for one of the many other courses on Oahu that have proper management and a pro shop staff that actually knows how to run a golf course. read more

OMG who doesn't take in a deep suck of air when they exit one of the tunnels and catch the Windward coastline? Tell you what...Klipper doesn't disappoint! Course was good, staff pleasant. And the view from 13, 14, & 15 are jaw D R O PPING STUNNING! Good news for non-military: The Klipper is open to the public! Just call in your res and give them your vehicle info. The nice folks there will let base security know you're coming so you can get on base! Oh one more note: the food is pretty bad so I recommend thinking of another 19th hole to finish off the round. read more

Klipper at MCBH Kaneohe Bay is my most enjoyed and hated military course! Enjoyed for the beautiful views and enjoyable play; hated because I lose so many balls...but I enjoy the challenge. The service staff is great and always helpful and friendly. The facilities are well maintained and nothing looks run down. One of my favorite things about this (any) course, they let you hit off the grass at the range...I loathe the artificial feel of hitting off the mats. This course is beautiful. The fairways are great, long and mostly straight, with a fair amount of challenge along the way. I wish every hole were a par 5...but doesn't everybody? Only a few challenging fairways but they make the course more interesting. There isn't a lot of shade like at Leilehua, so they put down plenty of little "ball-hungry shrubs" all over the place to make up for it. It also gets pretty hot out there so wear sunblock and hydrate. The greens are well maintained but they are fickle and they get more difficult as the day goes on. My short game becomes less of a game and more of a punishment as sun gets higher. The greens get pretty fast and the slope on some of the holes can pull your ball from one fringe to the other. The rate of play is relaxed (so are the marshalls) but we rarely get jammed up. When there is a delay, it is usually becuase some young service members are having fun with the golf carts or otherwise goofing off. If you have an opportunity to play this course you won't be dissappointed. Just remember to bring a few sleeves...just in case. :D read more
