I only had to pay $16 to play here (that is the Kama'ina--or "local person"-- rate). So...They say in life, "You get what you pay for..." (sudden dramatic pause). I bet, at this point, you are thinking, "That lead-in makes it sound like this guy about to write a really negative review... and I bet he is about to mercilessly criticize Kahuku." But hold-on there, reader!!! ...let me finish. So, like I said, they say, "In life, You get what you pay for"... but sometimes an experience transcends the moment. And sometimes, (dramatic pause)...when the stars align just right, something that you pay for ends up being worth a thousand times more than what you pull out of your wallet. Golfing at Kahuku, *if you go with the right mind-set, has high potential to one of those times. I don't think Yelp allows swear words, so I shall substitute the English language word that we often use to emphasize how much we like (or hate) something with another word. The word that will be used is the Hawaiian word, "moekolohe" and it has similar meaning to our beloved "f-bomb", but is not as crass. I liked playing at Kahuku so-moekolohe much! Here are my moekoleohe reasons! 1. The setting: this place is nestled between the shores of the Pacific and the Northern-most part of the Ko'olau mountain range. It is so moekolohe beautiful here. 2. The staff is wonderful. I called the course the day before I played and the young lady who answered the phone was exceptionally pleasant. She had a warmth that came through the phone lines, and I here-by nominate her as the poster-girl for the Aloha spirit that the islands are known for. The elderly-ish gentleman who was working the pro shop when I arrived the next morning, was also great. Both emplyees spoke articulately, but a "splash" of the local pidgin dialect occasionally slipped out in as they talked (*kinda like how the "southern drawn" can be heard if one travels to that part of the US). I loved it and immediately feel a delight and warmth for the speakers when I hear it. 3. Old school charm--the pro shop is set up in a beat-up old trailer, the course a little "rough and ready". It is a classic links-style course--which follows the natural landscapes of the coast. It was windy--no surprise as it is right on the ocean. The fairways are far from lush (but in their defense, I played here at the end of a long hot summer, and the course was more than ready for and in much need of the upcoming rainy season). And finally, the putting surfaces were not perfect and probably are the reason I missed a few putts (yeah, that's the reason I missed those putts...not because 3 or 4 three-putts are what I usually do per round. yeah, it was the putting surface). 4. The players that I interacted with were super friendly and charming. It is a 9-hole walking course and players can be seen pushing their clubs over hill and dale. The players that I was around on this day extended respect and numerous courtesies, such as: allowing faster players to move past, two guys stopped playing and helped me find a slightly errant ball when it rolled onto their adjacent fairway. All that I saw made their way around the course at a, "steady-paced ready-golf " style of play. When a storm rolled in and it forced everyone to stop play (it was really coming down for about 15 minutes), I found shelter under some trees where an elderly Japanese business man and his son and I commiserated in the gail. But I was loving every minute of it. My words are not flowing very well and I feel that my command of the English Language is failing me....I had hoped to share that I found this place utterly charming and an extreme joy to experience, but upon re-reading what I have typed out so far, I kinda feel like I am not able to find the words to describe how much joy I felt from coming here. (everytime I come back to the islands, someone has suggested that I give this place a try). Let's just say that I don't think that there are too many places like this left in the golf world, but I do know that Kahuku has a charm that is unique and special. So... If you find yourself on Oahu and you happen to like golf... then get your moekolohe-butt out here and soak in something that will be memorable and unique--as well as something to tell your golf buddies about back home on the mainland (or if you are local and have not tried this place, what the moekolohe are you waiting for? read more

As you can read in other reviews the staff is not friendly, at least not to tourists. It was clear they wanted it to be a locals only type of thing and made ridiculous rules to be able to golf you don't see anywhere on their website and have never heard of being enforced at any other course. Staff even got upset when tried to question things. My group of 5 weren't allowed to pay after driving more than an hour there. Saw another group of tourists have to leave. LOVE love LOVE this course! This place is a hidden gem! It's right off of Kamehameha Hwy and right along the water. Reviews and pictures online are definitely mixed but I think everyone should check this place out at least once in their lifetime. Driving up you might not think much of the course but as you navigate around the course, you too will appreciate the beauty of this place. The staff is friendly and helpful and the regulars are fun and enthusiast about playing at this course. NO PRO SHOP, but who really needs them :P RATE: The rates are fair and well worth it. PARKING: There's a private gravel/sandy parking lot with more than enough spots. No fee to park. This is a nice municipal course to walk. There is a surprising variety of holes to give you a challenge. A couple of very long holes that make it fun to see how you'll get up to the green. It's very dry right now as you can see in the picture but not cracked like Olomana can get when it is dried out. This means you can get some lucky bounces and roll out quite a bit longer than normal. Downsides is the drive out there if you don't live on the north shore but it's not crowded like at Pali or Ala Wai. Another downside is the homeless camped along the beach. No concession or place to hangout and I didn't see a driving range or putting green. Price is right. If I were retiring it would be nice to buy into one of the bungalows along the course and walk over every morning and play a round. read more

I've golfed this course three times now and enjoy golfing there--once two rounds for 18 hole total. Sorry, no golf carts there. You can rent a push cart for $4 or $5 I believe. All times have been during the pandemic and one of main reasons why I golfed there. There's not many trees there. The 3rd and 4th holes have some that may come into play but mostly the type of bushes that grow along the seashore. The greens are not the best and some are better than others but none were slow. Some have these clover like weeds but are tiny and flat. The staff there was very friendly everytime. I give this course 5 stars because it's the cheapest place to golf. You can get a tee time almost any day and time even in these trying times. The fairways are very well maintained but it can get very windy there. The windiest round I ever played was at Kahuku. The good thing is that it's all cross wind. I say if you're taking a drive or cruise around the Island, book a time and enjoy 60-90 minutes golfing 9 holes there. read more

This is such a remote location ... and not only that I brought my mom and she just wanted to watch and the young woman who works there yelled at us the girl who works there with a tattoo on her leg, she's like if you even think about touching a club I'll charge you your hand can't even go near her club. I u deer stand the rule it's just wow I've never had someone speak that way or be so overly snobby on a course and I've played around many places. If you want an no frills chill place to play 9 holes this is the spot especially if you live here on the north shore. With the county golf card it's $10 for 9 holes walking. One thing that is clutch is that you do not need a reservation to play, only county course doing so. Don't forget you get what you are paying for. But for some gorgeous weather, views of the beach, ko'olaus and the occasional whales swinging by this works. If it was taken as good care of as let's say the Pali course this would get a 4. The club house is run down and the club rentals weren't the best but for the price we paid and the ocean views this is one of the best deals on the island. We just happened to drop by on our way back to turtle bay, because I read about the golf course in a magazine years ago. We saw the views from the parking lot and decided to play. We checked in and only had to wait for couple minutes to tee off. We didn't have anyone behind us which was great since we are not great golfers. We had a good time and will return! read more

I was pleasantly surprised on my first visit to this beautiful ocean-side nine hole golf course in Kahuku. The facilities are shabby at best; a parking lot in need of repaving, and small wooden buildings housing the maintenance shed and starters office, and a couple of portapotties outside the starters office substituting for the out of order restrooms inside. Be prepared to walk the course because they don't have any riding carts. They do however have push carts for rent if you don't want to carry your bag through the nine holes. The course itself was in much better shape that I was expecting after checking in. There was more green grass on the ground than you would usually find at most other municipal courses on Oahu, and the scenery was absolutely beautiful. The downside of the course is that there is a lot of sand all around. Not sand as in bunkers, but sand in place of dirt in a lot of places. I guess this is kind of expected as the course is connected to the beach. There is also a sand covered road that runs through the 8th and 9th holes which could possibly get in the way if you're unlucky. We came here on a Tuesday at about mid-day, and were able to walk on right away with no waiting. It had only cost each of us $8, and an additional $4 for the push cart rental. $12 for 9 holes of golf? I think that's pretty tough to beat! read more

Played this course back in 8/02/09. I would drive up from Waikiki to play this more often if it had electric golf carts. Beautiful views. 4 star's for this course, because there's always room for improvement...like adding electric golf carts and improving the course a little more. Course has no Driving Range. Laying amongst the shoreline dunes of kahuku, this course is an absolute treat for beginners and even couples! A short walk or (hike) through the 9hole course you will not be disappointed in the views...you get about 60 feet high at the 4th tee. They have rental clubs and pull carts...NO GOLF CARTS. Its also awesome because the community and workers that live there take pride in keeping the area and course pristine. The course is loved for its nature, scenic points, and preservation of land and coast...it is in cheaply maintained condition. Do not expect greens like pebble or turtle bay lol read more

Driving down the street to the course is kinda ghetto and you see 2 old rusty dilapidated shacks which turn out to be the starters office. Bathrooms out of order must use port a potties. But the course is beautiful and fun, well maintained. Quirky signage looks like 5- year old made them. $10 for 9 holes. Easy to walk we carried our clubs. If I lived closer I'd go here often. Kinda shady people hanging around parking lot and using porta potties though. read more

This is my favorite public course on the island. It's not a fancy PGA rated course, but for those looking for a leisurely slow paced game with uncrowded conditions this place hits it. It can get a bit windy (often sideways) but that adds more of a challenge and can actually help if you have a bad slice habit. You'll probably lose some balls in the bushes but I usually find some to compensate my loss. If you want an expensive, perfect, luxury course go to Turtle Bay with all the rich folk. If your looking for kick-back bruddah style golf I recommend Kahuku. read more

Where else can you play a round of golf for under $20? Kahuku is a nine hole walking course that you have to play twice to get 18 holes for $18. That's a dollar a hole, along an awesome beach side view. What a deal. It's like a poor man's Pebble Beach... Well not quite. But it's still a great value. It's a relatively flat course that can get windy since its so near the ocean. The greens are actually more decent than youd expect from a muni course by the water. And after you're done playing, go over to the shrimp trucks for a 19th hole garlic shrimp reward after a fun round. read more

I play kahuku frequently, overall it is a great course to play for only 12 dollars. It is only a 9 hole course and has NO golf carts. It is very casual attire, board shorts and a T shirt. The staff is incredibly friendly. there is a few issues the bathrooms are port a poddies and it is normally pretty windy due to the tradewinds off shore. I recommend playing this course for anyone who doesnt mind walking and likes a mello vibe. read more

This was one of my favorite courses while in Honolulu. Although it is only a 9 hole course the views are amazing from many tee boxes. Be prepared to fight the elements as you will encounter high winds and scattered light showers during play. That all adds to the fun. I'm only a novice myself but this course proved bringing my clubs was worth it. It was only $26 to play and the views alone are worth that. It might seem odd to give this course 4 stars given the clubhouse, but as a vacationer finding that Turtle Beach had bunkers filled with water this was a great and cheap alternative. It plays well even after heavy rains and has a couple of fascinating par threes with elevation. No real clubhouse or cart service and lots of locals, but that's what muni golf is all about. One of lifes greatest pleasures is to drive from Kailua on a weekday, walk nine at Kahuku, and go for garlic shrimp at Andy's. You bring your own pull cart or rent one. This is one of the very few courses on the island that are kid friendly. To call this place "ghetto" is like calling St. Andrews "ghetto", this is golf reduced to its most basic elements, and it is wonderful to all but the snobs. Played 9 holes with the family. This is a fun, wide-open course (9 holes) that runs along the ocean. The views are incredible. A couple of the holes were funky but fun to play. Fees (9 holes + golf clubs + cart) for visitors are extremely reasonable. The course was in good condition. All the bunkers were raked and there were very few ball marks on the greens. It's obvious that the people who play there want to keep the course looking good. Definitely not a fancy operation. We didn't see any signs on the highway for the course and had to use our GPS to find it. The pro shop is a shack. There are two porta potties out front if you need to take care of your business. The rental clubs were from a manufacturer that I had never heard of. Not enough drinking fountains on the course. Definitely worth playing though. read more
