This 53 year old grandma got up and relaxed into being up on the board and riding the waves in! We had another very athletic 27 year old Jiu Jitsu young woman who also learned from scratch. We had James-O and Tory and Julien and they were all great! James-O especially really took us under his wing. Very encouraging with perfect instruction. They taught us how to choose waves. It was SUPER helpful for the beginners that they would give our boards a push to get us up to the right speed at the right time. I cannot recommend them enough!

She is an excellent swimmer (on swim team) and likes to waterski and sail--she was excited for surfing. When we arrived, the two instructors were extremely disaffected. They barely introduced themselves, didn't ask the names of the participants or any other info. There were 8 people ranging from 9-young adult. There were two instructors. After about a 5 min on-land lesson, they went out. The boards for the little kids were the same size as the adults. No one helped my daughter or the other two younger kids get out. Once out, my daughter was able to catch a wave or two for a second and I think she really liked it, but sadly battling back out past the breaking waves she took a surfboard to the face and got knocked down pretty hard. She got back up, but neither instructor noticed any of it. The other kids also struggled; by one hour in of the 90 minute lesson all three of your kids under 12 had quit. They brought their boards in. The instructor's either didn't notice or didn't care. I think for $90 per person, the lesson should have been a way to share the fundamentals and get kids excited about surfing. My child instead said she felt scared by it, didn't know how to get out from under the board at one point, and that the instructors were mean. So, that was kind of the opposite of what I'd hoped. If you say you can teach kids, please hire people who like children. Staff it so that young children get enough attention that they don't have a negative experience. Maybe greet paying customers either a smile or a hello or a greeting. Altogether this was a really bad experience. I also wrote to the email listed on the website and heard no response.

Most parents drop their kids off and take care of business, but I always stick around. Two main reasons Im recommending this camp: 1. They take smaller groups of kids. Youll see another camp two streets over that has twice as many kids... as with any school, you want smaller class size. 2. Jason and his team know that this is all about fun and confidence generation, not grooming pro surfers. I've watched them get kids of all abilities to smile, by pumping kids up when they catch a wave, to giving special attention to those who are spooked or tentative. Two days there were zero waves at all... didnt matter, they paddled around and had competitions and team building exercises. My kids were just as happy as when they were catching waves. We are so happy our home owner booked a tent with chairs for our week long stay. Both Mac and Chuck were very accommodating to us to ensure we had enough space to put out our additional shade devices for 16 of us. They text you in the morning with the location of your tent, tents are up very early and come done well after we leave the beach for dinner. Their chairs are comfortable and tents are very sturdy to withstand the OBX winds. We'll be back next year and hope to use their tents and chairs again.
