Everything bagel, smokey tomato cream cheese and "The Works"! i.e. tomato, onion, micro greens, capers and balsamic vinaigrette
    Sara M.

I have been visiting this stall and now food truck at South of the James Farmers Market for quite a while. They are set up all the way in the back, right side, near Alchemy coffee and Goatacato. Look for their long line and 50's camper style food truck. Go early because the line gets really long and each bagel is handmade to order. They use my favorite Cupertino's/ New York Deli Bagels to make these delicious topped bagels. For about $7.50 you get to pick your bagel type, cream cheese type and toppings. Get the everything bagel! Its the best with the perfect amount of salt. I love topping it with the smokey tomato cream cheese and i order it with the "works". Thats halved tomato slices, chopped onion, micro greens, capers and balsamic vinaigrette. I think thats all but look at my picture and see its glory! Its a must eat at the market!

I've been curious about Kitchette and today I finally stopped by. So here's the scoop, they provide delicious take out (hot and cold) and offer catering services. Each day they have new dishes that are listed on Facebook or you can call ahead to find out what they have as well as order. It was difficult to make a selection since everything looked amazing and there were so many options, but I settled on meat lasagna, roasted brussell sprouts, and tiramisu. Good choices...the lasagna was rich in flavor and full of meat! The brussell sprouts were tender, yet slightly charred...omg so good (don't tell my mom I'm eating brussell sprouts)! I haven't tried the tiramisu yet as I'm writing this mid-meal. Yes, it's that delicious! I was shocked Kitchette didn't have a Yelp listing, so I had to add asap. People need to know about them!! So if you need a homemade, yummy meal and don't want to cook, this is your place! Okay, I going back to eating dinner. Cheers!

    Hair

I usually go here every other Saturday to get a bagel. Last time people who ordered after me got their food before I did. It took them about 15 mins to realize that I was still standing there waiting. Today I got the breakfast burrito and I was half way through it when I realized it was hair in it. I spit it out and took the rest of it apart just to find more hair inside. If it was on top I could understand but it was cooked and rolled inside of it. I'm disappointed about this.

Ok it may be a little weird to give a restaurant designed to provide "take home and warm up food" a five star review. There are great sit down locales that serve freshly prepared food by order that I have given less. My reason for 5 stars is always about experience, but first the food. I asked to throw a little this and a little that including. Curried roasted cauliflower, broccolini, baked butternut squash, a slice of meat loaf and a couple salmon cakes. She offered with these cakes a creamed horseradish sauce that was better than cheesecake. I literally want a bucket of it wow... the cool and flavor was both professional and a bit artistic. The meatloaf was amazing, the salmon cakes uber tasty, the vegi's succulent. I ate my potion cold and felt every bit the enjoyment I get at a sit down restaurant north of the river. Ok now the experience. The staff are uniquely helpful and friendly. It felt I like had knocked on my neighbor's door and was fed from their table. There was love in the service and the food. Now consider the location. The Kitchenette is sitting in the cross roads of Janke and Forest Hills. Its in an area of growth and renewal, there is currently a mix bag of food choices in the area. There is Crossroads coffee and the Little Nickel both providing quality products and experience, but its not the fan, and choice requires a long walk or car ride. This place serves a community with a unique and valuable offering that would work anywhere in town, in a place that needs a couple great anchors. Will I return, only every time I drive by at "food time". Great job, see ya soon.

The Best, the food and the cake were perfect. Kirsten and the crew were gracious and lovely. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect reception.

Not much flavor. Kids chicken strips were a chicken patty that was overcooked and cut up. Also came out lukewarm at best. The Rueben was soggy and had about three slices of meat on it. Very little sauce on the sandwich no and was charged for extra when I asked for more. Added the Parmesan truffle fries which were powered Parmesan with some truffle oil sprinkled on top. Again all lukewarm. The Timberwolf burger had maybe two jalapeño's on it and the onions were burnt. The regular burgers and kids are the same size. Housemade pickles were soggy and the cucumber skins were tough. The quality of food from when we had eaten here a couple years ago was subpar in comparison. If you are going to charge for upscale items then they need to be upscale in the quality of what you are serving. Will not be back.

Our server was Braxton, a delightful young lady. She was witty and a diligent server and all the things...and she did not steer us wrong when it came to the food. My husband and I both had a taste for ordering an Italian sub and Braxton said we would not be sorry if we ordered it, and we were not. I was literally moaning with almost every bite. I am a potato salad connoisseur. I will not eat it unless it is freshly made. I don't do any of the grocery store type of potato salads. (Gross!) I asked Braxton about it and she said that in general, she doesn't even like potato salad, but at this restaurant, she absolutely loves it and highly recommends it. Knowing it is freshly made on site, plus her recommendation, I decided to try it. Oh my word! This potato salad is straight from the portals of heaven. Sooooooo good. This might not seem like a big deal, but it's a very big deal to me. I like freshly brewed tea. Nothing bottled. Nothing out of a soda machine. (Disgusting!) I asked Braxton if the tea was actually brewed there and she said yes. Tea is not the same everywhere. Sometimes it's so weak, you don't even realize it's tea. Not here! It was perfect. This makes a huge difference to me as when my beverage is perfect, I enjoy my meal a lot more. The entire meal was top notch. The service was absolutely excellent. We loved having Braxton and would ask for her again. A DJ was setting up as we were eating. We learned that they have karaoke and trivia nights earlier in the week as well as dance nights on the weekends. My husband and I mentioned that we would definitely come back and bring friends. I loved my experience here and it could not have been made any better by anything.

It is fast casual - you order at the kiosk and grab a place to eat, listening for your number and/or text to alert you the food is ready. We arrived about 6pm on a Saturday night. It was busy and I grabbed one of the last two tables. It got very busy shortly after we placed our orders. The dining area is pretty big with plenty of bar seating around the windows. While we all ordered one after the other, our food didn't come out that way. Most of the food came out in about 25-30 minutes. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Juicy! Two people got tenders and three of us got sandwiches. The OG sandwich was very good, just messy! I ended up using a fork and knife bc it got too messy. The Mac and cheese was made with pimento cheese and was very good. My friend who got the fried green tomatoes said they were delicious and filling. Lots of goodies on top. Two friends enjoyed the collards. The only person who was underwhelmed was the person who got the Asian sandwich. Overall, if I wanted a good chicken sandwich and a Buttermilk and Honey was nearby, I'd place an order.

We walked in to find the staff bustling, cooking, and prepping orders, and the smell of some delicious fried chicken in the air. I saw the kiosks and was not too thrilled with the Wawa experience, but we gave it a shot anyway, since fried chicken is one of our favorites. The process was simple and allowed us to add or remove anything we could want, so that was nice. While walking to find a seat, we saw a person panhandling in the dining area, but the staff promptly removed him from the premises. I ordered us the Pimento Cheese Balls for an appetizer, and I chose the Fried Chicken and French Toast as my entree because I always try the "chicken and waffles" at every establishment that offers it. My partner ordered the OG Chicken Sandwich without tomato, and it came with crinkle-cut fries. It was about $40. The chef proclaimed our order was ready in quick succession, maybe three orders behind the guests before us. We waited about ten minutes, maybe fifteen at most. We picked up the orders from the counter, and there was a mix-up on the syrup, but the chef promptly rectified the situation. He was a no-nonsense kind of guy; straight to the point. He seemed firm, yet kind. It was clear the day had been a busy one; he even told us as much, which was great to hear (busy = fantastic food). The French toast squares looked like rye or pumpernickel, and they emitted a sweet aroma, a delightful hit of cinnamon and brown sugar. I drizzled the caramel syrup on my chicken and toast, sliced a piece, and paired a bite of chicken with the toast. I closed my eyes to savor the flavors: the toast was crunchy and almost gooey (yet, not overly so), the chicken was crunchy, the sweet cinnamon-y flavors from the toast, the caramel from the syrup, and the tender, moist chicken were a match made in culinary art. I cannot sufficiently describe the French toast in a way that would do it justice; it was crunchy and semi-gooey, and all scrumptious. I can only say it was the single best French toast that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Next, I tried the fried pimento cheese balls. Oh my. If you like mozzarella sticks, try these. I adored them: elevated fried cheese, for real. My partner enjoyed her sandwich as well; she ate everything except some of her fries. I saved half of my chicken and toast for today because I am like a treasure golem when it comes to delicious leftovers. I am going to air-fry the chicken and skillet-heat the toast back to its original goodness. I told the cooks that that was the best French toast that I have ever had, and I mean it. Do yourself a favor and try it if you're into French toast. This one is the GOAT. Side note: I spoke with the head chef outside, and he is from another branch (possibly Henrico?) to whip this location back into shape. Two words: "Nailed it."
