***2 1/2 stars*** My palate is never more open-minded than when I'm famished after a long hike. Everything tastes delicious and I'm definitely grading on a curve as I try to make up for the calories burned in the preceding hours. There are exceptions to every rule though, and none truer than my experience at Kitchen and Beer Bar. I've passed it many times on my way up to Norvin Green or Ringwood, and have considered stopping by, especially since it's been categorized online in a few places as a gastropub (a real weakness of mine). Wanaque unfortunately doesn't have a lot of decent post-hike options, especially with the closure of the restaurant right on the corner of 511 and Westbrook where you turn to cross the reservoir into Norvin Green, so expectations were a bit tempered. I came here with my chum a few Saturdays ago after a five- or six-hour hike at Norvin Green, ready to chow down. The parking situation is a little awkward; unless you're familiar with the area, your instinct (and what we did) is to park at the CVS across the street and cross your fingers that an overly-aggressive tow truck driver isn't on the prowl. It looks like there's a small parking lot around the corner on Doty Road that some of the customers were coming from, so that's where I'd likely park if I ever came back. It's a weird vibe in there. Definitely not a gastropub, but beer bar seems like a pretty decent descriptor. It's very dark in there, and the clientele spanned a huge swath of demographics; I was expecting white middle-aged guys in plaid shirts and work boots (and there may have been one or two), but the majority were surprisingly college-age girls at the bar. We were seated and served pretty quickly, if memory serves. Our waiter was friendly and personable, and I noticed that he stayed fairly close by during our experience and kept an eye on the table. Solid. We ordered the Chuck Wagon Taters ($11) to share, which were the highlight of the adventure. I'd argue it's very difficult to mess up tater tots, but regardless, they were pretty tasty. It was a solid portion for the price, and given the rest of the meal, it was a rare instance where I was glad I filled up on the app. As long as the tater tots are cooked thoroughly and the toppings are warm/properly softened or melted, you should be good to go. I also got a plain burger, and that was honestly one of the worst I've had in a while. Initially it came with toppings, but the waiter immediately remembered that I had requested it plain and took it back in the kitchen. Points for that, but when the naked burger showed up again 20 seconds later, it still had a bit of toppings residue and condiment taste. I'd be curious about other opinions on this topic, but unless the toppings in question are pretty dry, I'm not crazy about just brushing them off and presenting it as a plain burger. I don't want to taste pickle juice or the hint of ketchup or something if I didn't order that. Beyond the toppings issue, the burger was super greasy and tasteless. If the word burger is literally in the name of your establishment, that should be one of your selling points. Very disappointing. This honestly isn't my cup of tea anyway - I'm a wine/cocktail drinker, and the menu (as the name suggests) was mostly beer. Maybe the beer is excellent, but I wouldn't be able to accurately gauge. And for what it's worth, I stayed with water due to my recent activities. I might come back, but it's a hard sell when I know I'd have to tap dance around the menu looking for something akin to the tater tots.

From the decor, to the music ambushing in the background; the style is vibrant, inviting and quaint. The staff are here to serve, help and give the best suggestions! It becomes very personable and an experience you don't feel uncomfortable with. The food menu is so diverse and fitting to all palates. The beer selection is never ending, and full of NJ local crafts, cans and cocktails. A must do in Waneque.

The intolerance at this place is all you need to know to stay away.

The place is very unassuming from the outside but when we walked in it was full of people on a random Monday in the middle of a day in the middle of August. We decided to get the chicken cutlet sliders and the grilled chicken sandwich with french fries. The pickled onions - yummy! They were both absolutely delicious. Their beer selection is pretty good - I mostly like beers on tap but if you like other beers by can- they have a lot of them to choose. The waitress who waited on us was on top of everything and so pleasant. She was very accommodating. Prices were affordable. While we were only passing through, we would definitely go there again if we're in the neighborhood.

This place had great food and a really versatile craft beer selection. Had the impossible burger, pretzel, general tsos cauliflower, chicken flatbread, and mac and cheese between 2 adults and 2 kids. Everything was extremely solid and i was particularly impressed with the cauliflower...my husband normally isn't into veggies but loved it. Minus 1 star for spotty service. I usually love everything I get here but just picked up an order tonight and did not meet their usually good standard. My go to us the burger of the week, always cooked the way I like and it's always something different. Tonight's Onion Tower burger was a disappointment, on the website it pictures a burger topped with 3 onion rings which I know are very good. Got home and had to look for the onion rings which there was only 1, under the burger all soggy. Besides that the usually ample fries were scanty, so few I could count them 16 and that's counting the small ones. So no onion rings and few fries get 3stars. The burger itself was great as usual. Tried this when our fave was closed and we needed some drinks and a burger. The food was good, especially the fried pickles which had some crunch and came with a just right aioli. Their beer menu was comprehensive, cocktail selection was innovative but not overwhelming, and they had a nice selection of meads which was a pleasant surprise. Service was efficient and friendly, bathrooms were clean. We will definitely be back. read more

I have been meaning to write a review for this AMAZING place. It's a diamond in the ruff in Haskell! My husband and I went for the first time last night. The ambiance is cool, the service was good, the owner was very friendly. We got an order of wings, veggie wrap and elk burger, all the food was delicious. They have a lot of local craft beers that you can even buy to take home at 50% off the in-house beer list price... worth checking out, really hope they stick around!!! read more

I lived down the street in Haskell for a year and never would have thought a place like this would open in the area but i'm glad it did. Not only do they have a vast beer selection but they have a pretty nice menu selection, I got a frenzy of alligator sausage pheasant sausage and some other odd animal and all were seasoned differently and had a wine reduction sauce to dip with, very different but I'd definitely get it again, I also got the bison burger medium rare as did the wife, they came out medium but was still good, it seems as they have a slight seasonal menu change or are still very new and trying out new stuff but the chef is quite good , I have to say the only complaint is the seating arrangement the round high tables are very small I almost dropped my food couple times cos i'm a clumsy fuck but we know next time to sit by bar or at the square tables, and there's plenty of parking in the back so your all good to go, I wish these guys lots of luck ! read more

This is surely going to become a regular spot for us. They have an excellent beer selection and a simple but tasty and clever menu. There are a couple of game meat burgers and some nice twists on bar food favorites. We had an appatizer of chicken fingers with a very good jerk dipping sauce. I had the elk burger which was excellent as were the fries. My fiance had the Cuban sandwich which was also terrific The service was prompt and friendly and the place was impeccably clean. They got it right on every aspect of running a gastropub. I was very disappointed with the Spice Grill that used to be at this location and I'm happy that the new owner opened such a great place so close to my home. read more

Went a few nights ago and sat at the bar. Plenty of TVs all around the place to watch pretty much any sporting event you want. The food was great. We had the fried pickles and the grilled blackened chicken. A friend had the bison burger which looked amazing. They were pretty busy but the service was still fast, friendly, and very knowledgeable about all their beer options. The owners were talking to everybody and were very friendly as well. The beer selection is fantastic. Plenty of choices from IPAs in cans and on tap, stouts, and of course they still have the basics. They also have a bunch of cocktails and beer cocktails which sounded delicious. Can't wait to go back and try more of the beers and one of their burgers. Would definitely suggest this place to anybody that's into the craft beer scene. They have cans and growlers to go which is great for somebody like myself who wants to try as many of the beers as possible, but still has to drive home! read more

The cheese curds rock this world! I got the 1lb burger and it was great! Topped with bacon! However it didn't have a sauce or ketchup on it. Which left me with 1lb of semi dry meat. If it had a condiment it would have been amazing! I got it delivered so the homemade onion rings were soggy also. But they were delicious and I hate onions. read more

Great local pub for good beer and great food. Excellent selection of apps, burgers and sandwiches. Good beer and wine. Would love to see a dozen more taps. Hopefully in the near future. Super nice staff and great service. Difficult to find - confusing signage. Directly across from CVS. Ample side lot parking. A SIDEWALK SIGN WOULD BE HELPFUL IF ALLOWED. read more

Don't even waste your time. This place is very poorly run. Slowest service and you will wait forever for a table. No one takes down names or at least lets you know how long the wait will be. They just need better management. I suggest going someplace else. read more

Happy to see their menu expanding, but prices seem a bit steep as portion sizes seem to have shrunk a bit since opening - at least with delivery. Tried the calamari this week and wasn't impressed for $14. Small portion, but thankfully not chewy. Love the burgers and variety, love the board as an appetizer - just wish you had the option to customize it along with the tacos (again, I'm an online ordering girl - so many some of this happens when you dine in). Fries and onion rings are yummy and definitely order the cheese curds! I Can't comment on the beer or the atmosphere as I'm not a beer and usually am ordering through Dash Pass. 3.5 stars overall for right now. read more

Beer was unique and very good old man hattan 10/10 project horn 5/10 citra citra 3.5/10 fries were great and my burger was a build own (elk lettuce tomato bacon and bbq sauce). Burger was great bbq sauce was runny so didn't stay on the burger well. All and all 4/5 stars- damn good burger read more

great place to drink and hang out at the beer garden. Some food items we got were very good, however their fries tasted like they were fried in old dirty oil. Waiter was super nice and helpful with beer selections, however our old food plates and beer glasses sat there all night. Good food but very loud and echo. The owner has the personality of a garbage can. Went on a Tuesday night and had 4 Coors Lite. They were $4 each and warm and he didn't do any buy back. That's too expensive for a bar in this neighborhood. It's not like they are waterfront or have a view. I won't be back. read more

We went here a week ago because of the vast assortment of craft beers offered. The place has a great ambience and the staff were very friendly. The bartenders were extremely knowledgeable on beer and their recommendations were perfect. While there we had their appetizer sampler that had a little bit of everything. The fried cheese curds were a favorite. I would absolutely recommend the blackened chicken sandwich, I would go back just for that, the beer is an added bonus. Definitely recommend going here for some great craft beer and delicious food. read more

The short rib parpadelle with housemade pasta and a perfectly medium-rare, well seasoned hanger steak with truffle fries completed our satisfying and belly-stuffing meal. The cocktails are serious as well - the presence of a drink with egg white is my personal litmus test for a bar that knows what it's doing, so the Thyme to Bloom special had my name on it. I'm salivating just looking at photos of dishes I didn't order, and am already plotting my return!

The staff was lovely. The inside is quiet small so we decided to sit outside. There are tables outside and they are definitely trying to give you a beer garden feel but really you are sitting in the parking lot. They don't serve food but they do have menus from local places that will deliver.

The staff came over several times to check in which was appreciated. The food and service saved the experience for us! Prices were also reasonable. They have outdoor seating as well, which is where most people chose. If they were a more well-run establishment they could take this to the next level. Parking is around the corner of the Characters restaurant and seems to be plentiful.

Had heard/read good things about this place so decided to check it out with some friends. Sat outdoor patio area which I assume is a newer setup because of COVID. I can honestly say this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had. There was just SO much that went wrong, it would feel disproportionate to add every detail. Every order was wrong in some way - cooked wrong, missing items that were supposed to be on (they ran out - didn't mention that, just decided to not include in dish), and just overall poor quality food and service. In hindsight, there were a number of red flags from the very beginning that we chose to ignore and really ended up paying for it. I felt so bad that I chose to bring my friends to this establishment and that we actually paid money for what we were given. They didn't even adjust the prices to reflect the things they were "out of" and that we weren't given. I so badly wanted to get out of there that I didn't even bother to mention it. I added a star because I know they are trying to do the best they can in a given situation but I have no desire to ever go back and feel that A LOT would have to change to be successful. read more

We went Saturday night & the restaurant was EXTREMELY busy. Staff was professional & took care of our many needs. Food was awesome! Nachos was enough for four. I had the Steak sandwich & it was one of the best I ever had. The beer selection is why we initially came & it didn't disappoint. Multiple of every style in stock. Their bottle/can selection is extensive. I had a Foreign Objects Beer which is rare to NJ & it was delicious. I will definitely be back. My friends have been there 2-3 times already & have rave reviews. Definitely a place I will try to go back to when I get a chance. read more

Nothing unique to add to positive reviews. Our hiking group slammed them with ten on a Saturday afternoon and they satisfied. All our diverse draft beers were fresh and each quickly-delivered meal was beautiful and delicious. My short rib tacos and sweet potato fries was enough for two meals, even after sharing the fries with my table. I asked the server "Do you realize how good you are?" Our group has been coming for years and we will return. read more

Have been ordering from kitchen all throughout the pandemic and they haven't disappointed me once! Delivery is always on time or earlier than expected and the food is excellent. They also offer a great mix of drinks. Definitely the best place in town for high quality food at a good price. read more
