Came here on my daughter's & her boyfriend's recommendation. From the outside I'll admit I was a bit skeptical.. it was very unassuming and looked a bit run down. Once we got inside we were greeted by Cash the dog!! He was one of 16 (out of 1000's of NJ dogs) to be picked to be featured on NJ "Top Dog" scratch off Tickets. Lottery tickets of his were proudly displayed above the bar. Our bartender was very nice but I didn't get her name. There were 3 people at the bar when we walked in and a couple who walked in right after us. We ordered wings (I know boring) and a steak sandwich with French fries. If it was later in the day I definitely would have ordered a house special as I hear the chef is excellent and his food is a true hidden gem. The wings were very good saucy if you like them like that with a nice kick to the sauce. The Steak Sandwich with American cheese and onions and hot peppers (hold the mushrooms for us) was excellent. Soft bread, a good portion of sliced steak hit the spot for a fast bite to eat. Prices are great for a neighborhood bar and I would have loved to try the Steak Diane but there is always next time.... And we were will be back to check out the dinner specials and the atmosphere at night. All in all a great place to try if you are close by and just want nice neighborhood bar food and a cold drink!!! read more

This is stop 11 of 158 for us. This is a lovely old bar. Frankly it was such a surprise to open the nondescript door to this hidden gem. Long wooden bar. Beautiful tin tiled wall and ceiling. So nostalgic. Yelp says dive bar. Not really a dive at all imho. Or maybe I've been to some really divey bars! This place is beautiful. read more

Service is always great (I know the service industry well). This is a blue collar bar sitting on a once busy paper mill campus. A small stream ran parallel to Ringwood Ave. and had an enormous berm built to create hydro power with a lake. read more

This place is a hidden gem, small place , great old school style ,great bar, stocked well with any drink you want. Bartenders and the service were excellent, on top of everything,the food was fantastic,you wouldn't think it from a bar but the steak was sizzling and tasted amazing, the wings perfect. Had an outdoor section that was perfect . Best part it had a huge back room with a full length shuffleboard table and pool table. Crazy part with all that food and drinks our bill for 4 was just under a hundred bucks. I'd like to keep this place hidden lol but it wouldn't be fair, for NFL and College football this will be the place to be! Enjoy. read more

The chef (believe his name was Robert) is sending out AMAZING quality meals for a great price. I drove a bit out of my way for this, saw on the menu on their website about a great $16 deal on a $16 steak. Well, apparently they don't update that, and it actually has gone up even further since it's gone up. Let's be fair about prices going up because that's happening everywhere, but I do feel they should update the menu on their website so that people aren't misguided. That took them down a peg in ratings. So I went with a burger instead, the mushroom and swiss burger substituting mozzarella for the swiss. The burger was really quite good, the fries were actually bad enough that I didn't finish them, and I'm a pig. The bartender herself was absolutely fantastic and without question the highlight of the place. She was so on top of topping people off when their glass is empty, interacting with people, engaging them without being anything but pleasant and a pleasure, remembers your name. Absolutely, positively fantastic bartender, and that really is what makes this place. The decor isn't bad, the dog is cute though slightly annoying as you're trying to eat which reminds me of my own dog, the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. I would honestly say that if you are local, it's probably not a bad spot. Strikes me as a place where regulars feel like family, because already you get an idea of that as a newcomer. However, it's honestly not something that I would go out of my way for. Aside from learning upon arrival that the prices are definitely higher - as in $8 higher on that particular steak that lured me in - than what's posted on their website, and the fries being bad, it wasn't a disappointing experience, especially because the bartender was so fantastic. But as much as I love dive bars, this one is not something that has me thinking about going back. read more

Came here for casual drinks on a Saturday and ended up ordering a few beers and a bar pie. It looks like a neighborhood bar where all types of people come to have a good time. Everyone is friendly and the atmosphere is inviting. It has a bit of a dive bar in a charming location feel. Parking was not difficult and best of all the prices are VERY fair. After all these years I finally got a chance to stop in here at Flips on Friday 11/30 and I do say i was impressed ! I would rate it as a 5star dive bar with neighborhood class.....Very good liquor selection along with a good beer selection....And thank you for carrying PBR cans,,,,,The bartenders are very friendly and very attentive.....The place was clean and had lots of caricature ....Really cool tin ceilings.....I saw the chef come out serving food but I didn't have a chance to eat here which I will next week when I visit again......The prices where good for beer...$3 PBR's...can't beat it !! read more

Local bar that is generally always open late at night. Stopped in this past Sunday to watch the late afternoon NFL games and 1st half of the Giants Broncos game at 8:30 pm. Kitchen was open for the afternoon games but closed for the night game so eat first if you are coming in late . Beers were cold, service was good. Took the wife here for a couple of nice drinks. Was charming in its own way. There were two barmaids. The one rockin' the cleavage couldn't remember that I was waiting at the bar for another drink. My original barmaid (no cleavage) was the bomb. She kept an eye out for me and jumped up when cleavage's mind wandered, and took care of me. The moral of the story is -- don't judge a book by its cleavage. Go to the other barmaid. read more

Good bartending! Pretty inconsistent atmosphere but a good bar for locals. They have multiple games in the back and fast service.

Opened first a bar first day after Prohibition was repealed in 1933, so they're not about being a fly by night joint or hopping on the latest trend for sure.. What they are offering is a local bar tastefully decorated with local historical pictures, some basic food off a menu board at the end of the bar, a digital music system and a back room with a pool table. The bar itself is pretty nice. Running most of the length of the front room, with multiple flat screens tastefully incorporated into the liquor shelves where I'd imagine mirrors were at one point. Anyone into architecture or appreciation of old buildings please take note.. The original tin ceiling and walls are still in place. The wall have had wainscoting paneling installed in the past, but during some recent reconstruction, the tin walls were discovered behind them in tact.. Joe, the owner, explained how he had a few removed, cleaned them up, and incorporated the panels set into the wainscoting for display.. We only stopped in for a nightcap on our way home, so I cannot attest to the food, but out beers were ice cold and hit the spot. Looking forward to getting back soon. read more

Good local bar. No menus but food was very reasonably priced and VERY good. We had a sizzler and burger. Both were very good. Good beer selection but don't expect 100 taps. The bar has a shuffle board table and a pool table. This bar is definitely a local hangout. We knew a few people from around town but not everyone. I would definitely recommend for a place to have a few beers , a bit to eat and play some pool or shuffleboard. read more

Flips is the oldest bar in town. Over the years it has adapted to meet the changing times and somehow has kept the original appeal that made it withstand the test of time. Great place to have a beer, watch a ball game, shoot pool, and grab lunch. read more
