Once my order was taken, food came out not too long after. I got the katsudon as it's a classic dish. It was hard to choose what to get since it all looks really good. The Katsu was crispy and moist and it was laid on top of a bowl of egg and rice. Taste wise, it didn't wow me but the textures were great. I think the sauce could've been more flavorful for how much they put in the bowl. This is a great spot for lunch and would recommend if you're craving some Katsu.

But we were meeting friends and that's what they wanted so we just ordered a bunch of sides. We ordered the cucumber salad, the eggplant, the tofu and the edamame. I would love to have the recipe to the cucumber salad and the eggplant. I don't even eat eggplant and that was out of this world. The service was wonderful. It was a little loud in there for us but probably perfect for mostly everyone else. Not super jazzed about walking through the plastic curtain to get to the bathroom, like why? I'm thinking about people who maybe aren't washing their hands when they're leaving and then I've got to touch it, makes me want to do the limbo so one star off for that, otherwise it was great.

While I was in Montreal, I had to check out the FAMOUS Kinton Ramen (yes, I know about this spot…read morefrom their graphic t shirt collaboration with Uniqlo LOL). I stopped by around 8:45 PM, 15 minutes before they closed, but the staff were so kind and lovely, let me dine in, gave me a free drink on the house, and even told me to take my time and not worry about closing. I ordered the spicy garlic pork ramen with thick noodles, and I was blown away with how flavorful the broth and QQ (chewy) the noodles were. I didn't like the pork that much and found it a bit tough and gamey, but they do have two other types of meat (chicken, beef) as well as a vegetarian option available, as well as seasonal menu specials. If I was at McGill, I'd probably visit this spot a bit too often LOL, and I highly recommend checking them out for their comforting ramen bowls and incredibly kind service!

You also need to decide if you want thick or thin noodles, went with thin. - Original Karaage Simple interior design and layout, either you sit at the tables or the bar. The staff member was very friendly, service was quick and the food came out fast. The Karaage was perfectly fried, seasoned and delicious. However, no dipping sauce is provided, all other joints that I've been to will give you a mayo dipping sauce, not here. The Ramen - noodles were perfectly cooked, however honestly package ramen had a better flavor than their Original pork ramen unfortunately. I had expected this rich and creaminess of the pork broth, that was sticky-lipped intensifying, but it was not. This was disappointing and thus can only give 2 stars. I can't say for other noodle type, but original pork ramen needs a lot of work.

So I've had Japote on my bookmarks forever. I love little independent food court vendors! However,…read moreJapote is only open Monday-Friday and only 11:30am-2:30pm, and these days if I'm in Montreal, it's usually just for the weekend. Or I might arrive as early as a Friday evening, so I hadn't been able to try this Japanese food court vendor with an apparent cult following...until recently! I was on a weekend getaway with my mom and we decided to get into Montreal on a Friday morning. So lunch at Japote it was! So the place is in the food court inside the Scotia Tower/Tour Scotia. It's in the basement, along with Subway, Lily & Cie, and a few other vendors. It's the one with the longest lineups, lol. I got the medium #8 Katsu Don (fried breaded chicken with egg on rice). It was around $6. And my mom got the small teriyaki chicken (#3 Tori-Don). It was around $4. So I'm giving it 4 stars for being good for food court food, but it wasn't like super duper. The small was really small. Unless you just want a snack (which my mom did because she just had a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's like an hour earlier, lol), I would recommend at least a medium. I enjoyed my Katsu Don. The breaded and fried chicken cutlet was tasty and the egg was really soft. The white rice underneath was slightly sticky, but not mushy. I had some of my mom's teriyaki chicken and I found the sauce too sweet. However, the chicken itself was lean, like my dish, and was still good. I also got a scoop of matcha green tea ice cream for dessert ($1.50). The ice cream was really rich and creamy and full of matcha flavour. It was a tiny scoop, but just the right size for a little after meal dessert. It is pre-scooped and placed in the freezer in a bowl. I had never seen this before, but I guess if it's busy, this makes the line move faster. Service was very friendly and efficient. Definitely a good place for an inexpensive weekday lunch. I've heard so many people raving about it so I was expecting it to be mind-blowing, which it was not, but it was still excellent for the price and for the fact that it's in a food court.

I went back here with my wife and was very disappointed in the service. The waiter (skinny short…read moreearly/mid-twenties guy with glasses and long hair) was incapable of being kind, helpful or professional; he struggled to communicate without being rude. I'm not talking about a strong accent or anything, his English was definitely coherent, but what left an awful taste in my mouth was his bad attitude and straight-up rude demeanor towards my wife. He made our experience very off-putting and we were very disappointed. He was lucky I was tired that day, otherwise I might've made a scene. Good thing there is this thing called Yelp where customers can warn people (and business owners) about bad apples that might be bringing down the quality of their fine establishments! :) I don't recommend coming to Tsukuyomi if you are expecting decent service or to be treated like a human being. It was very confusing to even make an order, because the exasperated, impatient, and rude waiter did not want us to ask any questions about the menu. He also rushed us to make our order even though there were only two other people there: it was clearly not super busy. He later reluctantly checked in on us then immediately pressured us, assuming we were going to order more (insinuating it would be rude to just order drinks and appetizers). We definitely did not want to order more after the slimy salmon. We weren't super hungry and just wanted appetizers and drinks. It's an Izakaya, no? Can't I just order a few small plates and drinks? I ordered the salmon sashimi, usually my go-to order there (sometimes I get the salmon bowl instead). It tasted really yummy and came with a big serving, but unfortunately the sauce was drowning the fish and looked questionable; the texture of the dish was a bit concerning, both the salmon and the sauce were slimy and looked strange. Due to the rude waiter who made my wife uncomfortable I checked to see if the food had spit in it (I don't believe it did, thankfully, whew). Normally I would never suspect this kind of thing happening, but I heard the waiter laughing and talking about us to the cook right after we got done with our order, so I was a bit scared they would do something. In the past I would never have even through this place was capable of doing something disgusting like that, but now I have completely changed my mind. Although the food is still decent and pretty good, I think that whoever is managing the wait staff / restaurant needs to discipline them and tell them not to be so rude. I'm not sure it is the same owners because it seems like the quality and overall vibe of this place has fallen off a bit. If it IS the same owners, I hope they get their staff and food quality in order. Our past experiences at Tsukuyomi were pristine. We were regulars! I have some hope for this restaurant since it was one of the only good ramen / izakaya places near us, but this bad experience made me afraid to come back. I'd love to know if something was done to look into to this but I know it's hard to fix something like this. Theoretically would love an apology, but even if I got one, I'm almost 100 percent certain I wouldn't come back.
