People here are great, coffee is not. Unimpressive flavor, very overwhelming body, and very strong. Now I don't go for weak coffee by any measure either, but man this coffee is like a punch in the face! Ive literally gotten a headache and felt dizzy every single time I've had coffee here. Ive tried several different items on their menu - iced, hot, regular, espresso... but all same story. I've had several friends mention getting a headache too after coming here. It's disappointing because they have a lot of good things going for them. I like that they serve their drinks in real house mugs, and though not a fan of their actual coffee, I appreciate that they roast their own coffee - it's actually pretty cool that everything, including their roasting machine, is all out in the open. I also appreciate that their coffee is complex - perhaps it's noticeable because of how strong it is, but I have to give them credit for that. As far as the environment goes, during the day the shop has an abundance of natural light with a very simple, un-distracting environment. It is truly a unique feel with an atypical, uncluttered, modern decor with clean lines and we'll apportioned contrasts. I like that as it is a welcomed change from the heavy, overstimulating 'hipster' vibe that many coffeehouses go for. In the evening and at night on the other hand, the white walls and dull fluorescent lighting makes this place feel like a cold, uninviting hospital room. There's also far less ambient noise here than a lot of coffee shops; however that means when there aren't a lot of people in the room, basically everyone can hear your conversation since there is nothing to absorb or drown out your voice. I have a very conflicted feeling about the overall experience of the place. Coffee here I could live without, environment is perhaps one of the better ones in town. Where do I even begin. Third Wave is one of three coffee shops in Lynchburg that roasts it's own beans, and I have to say of the three that do, it is probably my favorite. The single origin beans they bring in here are some of the highest quality that I have tried. I've had the Ethiopian kochere, the Peru roast, and the Nicaraguan, as well as the house espresso. Each time I have been blown away with the complexity of the cuppa. I'm a particular fan of their nitro that they offer on tap, which is phenomenal. The baristas here are very knowledgeable, and its easy to notice that they take their craft very seriously. They are very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is open and chill, I will say on a busy day it can get a tad noisy, but that tends to be the case with most shops. The prices are on the high side, but in my opinion the quality of the coffee served here justifies that factor. 10/10 would most certainly recommend this place! read more

I first went here when it opened a while back and I did not have a great experience. While they made a good cup of coffee, there was an atmosphere of judging, I felt. After a lots of debates, I gave it another chance. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at the welcoming attitude of the baristas. For a while, I was elitist and thought that only I could brew a good cup of coffee using various methods (mainly pour over and Aeropress) at home. Best coffee in Lynchburg. People who only drink specialty coffees might not give as good ratings because they don't drink the pourovers, nitros, cortados, etc. But I have not once tasted burnt coffee at this place - in fact, it is the opposite. They are careful and quality roasters and baristas. They will strive to give you the best of the best and always ask if you enjoyed your drink. Their question is not a pleasantry but genuine. They are open to criticism and will make a new drink for you if did not like it.
