I've been spending more time in Astoria and anytime I'm somewhere I need to find my spots. I will go the distance for the right dive, the cute art gallery, the authentic restaurant, the record store and of course the perfect cortado! Mama Mia! I love the nerdy culture of coffee so much. Those who know, always appreciate, document and share the love of latte art! Damn! This art was nice. The barista working was super nice and took pride in his work. He remarked it was the third photo taken of his art that day and we were only at the afternoon mark. Very positive vibes in this shop. He also poured me a nice glass of room temp water to go with my full fat cortado. I found a cute lil' stool by the mural and window view. A perfect afternoon treat. Speaking of treats, there was many to pick from. I will be returning for Caneles! One of my absolute faves. I'm a sucker for any custard variation, I can not be stopped in my humble cravings. Kinship is more serious about coffee than many of the local spots that offer it, which I appreciate. Food - I've only had the coffee, but the pastries look good. I find it funny that a lot of my reviews are for coffee shops, even though I don't drink coffee. But here's a little secret -- some coffee houses have the best teas (if that's your thing). This holds true at Kinship Coffee. Their Moroccan Mint tea was everything I needed at that moment. Kinship is a tiny spot right off the corner of 30th Ave and Steinway. It's warm and welcoming and has the best staff. Upon my first visit, the barista made it a point to make sure I was able to get into the Wi-Fi so I was able to work. I ordered a mint tea and two of the Canelés. They were awesome! I had one at the cafe and one the next day at home which still tasted fresh). If you need a quiet little spot to work, or just collect your thoughts (because Steinway could get a bit cray) then this is a great spot for you to check out! read more

I swung by Kinship after a nail appointment nearby. I ordered a cold brew and it was super smooth. No sour after taste or anything like that. They had a small range of pastries for sale too. Friendly staff and a lot of seating. This spot would be perfect to get some work done while enjoying a delicious drink. read more

The almond croissant is one of the tastiest pastries I've ever had in the neighborhood. Was disappointed by the chai though. Sadly it tasted like water, not a good flavor. I would highly recommend trying the baked goods, though. read more

Astoria has a few coffee shops in this neighborhood that are cute like this one. Stopped at Gossip Coffee first, great environment but no outlets. Came here after. Does have outlets, but no bathroom. The barista is super nice and watched my things while I used the rest room across the street at a different restaurant. Cold brew was great. Nice and smooth. Oat milk and almond milk as alternatives. Favorite coffee cafe in Astoria. This one is the cooperative so it's a little smaller than their other locations but still nicely decorated. I always get the espresso tonic because it's super refreshing and I get the kick I need to get my day started. I haven't tried their other drinks at this location but loved the lattes I've gotten from their other location (also on Steinway). Have to take a star off because the size of the cup for espresso tonic is small (and only 80% filled) compared to a regular ice coffee so it is on the pricey side. read more

When you're hardly a coffee drinker and still able to enjoy the cafe / coffee shop experience, that's a huge win for the venue in my book. Despite being from the land of Stumptown, I hardly ever crave caffeine and or seek the time killing experience of a cafe. Yet, there is something about Kinship that keeps me coming back and enjoying myself in the process. There are other variables at hand: a cool, casual ambiance coupled with an abundance of pastries and the obligatory free wifi (which boasts a solid signal might I add!). The music varies of course and the crowd is a young one, often sipping and surfing on their laptops or bustling for a cup before heading out to Steinway. The staff is made up of friendly folks, who mentioned to me that management is actually local and decided to set up shop in Astoria rather than the hipster confines of Brooklyn. Coffee fiends, enjoy Stumptown and other roasters like Sight Line and Ceremony. The only thing left now is more outlets. Way more outlets. read more

A very ideal stop for coffee lovers after a long day of work, getting off the rush hour subway ride, and just before going home for dinner. The vibe is really relaxing and chill. Everyone from the staff to customers are really friendly. Something about the cafe being so small and seating so close together that makes it so friendly. I can recall countless of times where I feel so comfortable just starting a conversation with the barista or another customer and vise-versa. A tiny coffee shop that brings the community together through enjoying a cup of coffee. Cold Brew is the way to go. Drink it straight black to taste the boldness and it gives you an instant wake up call. Coffee Nirvana? Love it! Admittedly, I love the fact that they are serving Stumptown but at the same time, I am a bit effy. So excited when this place opened because there are ( or were!) very few independent coffee places in this area. If I don't order tea, which they have a great selection of, I get a soy cappuccino...so smooth and even creamy without being heavy at all-an awesome cup! a nice small coffee house in astoria where i can grab a cappuccino and muffin on a thursday morning while waiting for cuz who is late as always. good selection of hot and cold beverages to start your day and enjoy of the many sweets and breakfast treats as well. some seating inside and some more outside if weather is nice , inside its simple and homey which works for me. kinship coffee is a good place to visit to start your day . I've been there two days in a row. They have only been open for three. Just a note: ~They opened up the last day of April, which means for now cash only. ~Cold brew coffee $4, Americano $3 just to give you an idea of the prices ~Stan-the-coffee-man, as my other half likes to call him, is one of the owners (his wife being the other) is extremely friendly and down to earth. ~Stumptown coffee now in Astoria :) My roommate will be stoked. ~The store hours (for right now) is going to be 7am-9pm, as they are still trying to see how business goes. On my way to check out a DVD from Redbox (CVS on Broadway) I happen to be looking at the stores on Steinway. By chance, I see a Stumptown Coffee sign through a large glass window, and immediately walk in. You see, Stumptown coffee reminds me of the West Coast (Oregon to be exactly) and I miss it. So to be able to enjoy Stumptown coffee without having to travel to busy-bustling Manhattan brings me joy. The place is cute and simple. The plants and wooden decor bring a relaxing feeling to the place, regardless that it's located on such a busy street. I LOVE the idea that there aren't many outlets. One 4 prong is all I found. Which means people won't be sitting there, sucking up free WIFI FOOOR-EEEEV-EEEER (said like the kid from The Sandlot) Customers will be able to sit, drink a cup of cold brew coffee (my suggestion during the summer days to come) read a book, perhaps do some homework, even just sit at the bar and stare out of the window. I also enjoy the seating. It's just two counters/bar seating and a circle table in the center. As you can see I love simplicity. A coffee shop should offer a place for people to enjoy their coffee, not a place for people to suck free WIFI and turn their table into a work cubicle. To be in love is to wander through a pitch black forest with open eyes. To navigate helplessly, knowing you have no real way of controlling the journey, but to attempt to do so anyway. Kinship Coffee is a kind of version of this. Despite the coffee here being far, far inferior to that which is pulled at the nearby Gossip Coffee, the place is cool, the Dough donuts are amazingly delicious, and the people working here are awesome. This is a glad place. I mean, when it comes to coffee this spot is like a 3 star, maybe even 2, but the scene, the baristas, and the Dough donuts definitely pull this up to a four. I don't know if I will be back here much, but I am glad I found myself here at least once. read more
