This is some excellent Jamaican food! I had the curry chicken with mashed potatoes, while my friend had the curry shrimp with rice and peas. Man, was I jealous that I didn't get the same things as her! The shrimp was so flavorful and rice and peas were delicious! My chicken was tender, but I'm not a huge fan of bone-in chicken, so it wasn't my favorite. The mashed potatoes were very garlicky, which I enjoyed! The main cons were the wait time and it's not really a sit-down and dine in sort of spot (at least that was my impression). We ended up taking it to go and eating our meal at home. LOVE this place, food, and people. I'm a bit of a spice wimp. (Usually handle a 3 out of 10 hot level.) The chicken tacos and the fish tacos WITH the fresh-made pineapple and mango salsa are to die for. Simple, perfect blend of flavors. The fish is clearly fresh and quality cuts. A tiny kick of spice but balanced by the fresh salsa (and I'm not a big fruit salsa person, usually.) Apparently I just haven't had the right ones. Can't wait to go back. TL;DR: Overcharged, didn't get what we ordered, took an hour, staff annoyed that we were there This was the worst experience I've had at any restaurant in memory. We placed at order at the window for four items and were told it would be 10-15 minutes. After 45 minutes we went to check, and the person we talked to, rather than being apologetic, acted annoyed we were bothering them. After another 15 minutes we went back in to just ask for a refund. The employee shoved a bag in our face without a word. Two of the four items were not what we ordered. We were charged for the more expensive items we did order. At that point we just gave up. On top of the service issues, the food was barely edible: the plantain was cold, the vegetable pie was tasteless, and the veggie salad was warm and oily. read more

Stopped at The Plant after a hike early afternoon on a Friday and needed a bite to eat to go with our beers from BMC in the same area. Split the Jerk Fish Sandwich. It was excellent and enough for the both of us. I was a bit suspect of the purple slaw but it too was delicious. Next time hiking in the area, will try the wings. My wife and I tried out The Plant for the first time and happened to chat up the owner and the staff of this restaurant and decided to give it a try. We ordered the tacos with jerk chicken and fish, 3 of each and the plantains. We ordered the food to go but when I smelled the aromas coming out of the kitchen and saw the food I couldn't wait. All I have to say is that this food is phenomenal and ample. It's topped with pineapple salsa that added the perfect sweet to the slightly hot jerk. This food is cooked with love and is authentic Jamaican cooked with love by Jamaicans. Really great food by great people. By the way, this is not a food truck. Wow! I am so glad to see something unique and special in Pittsboro. There is nothing else like this anywhere close! Advertising as authentic Jamaican food, this was absolutely delicious. We ordered the Braised Oxtail with Jasmine Rice, with a side of Plantains and the Salted Fish Eggrolls. First, the braised oxtail is phenomenal. Super tender and incredibly flavorful. The plantains were a nice, sweet compliment. But I have to take a moment to talk about the eggrolls. I know it as bacalao, but never had it in an egg roll. It was slightly salty, super savory, and the mango pico on the side was a perfect add-on. I will be going back ALOT! Top notch for sure!! read more

We stopped into the outdoor food hall, The Plant, to grab a drink and get some lunch. I did not expect to find a super legit Jamaican food spot in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina. I've lived in South Florida my entire life and had all kinds of Caribbean food from Jamaican to Haitian, Dominican, etc. And I can tell you this is one of the most authentic Jamaican food spots that I've ever been to. They make everything fresh - even the beef patties! Which is rare to find. The rice and peas were amazing and tasted home cooked. The jerk sauce on the wings was beyond delicious and was just the right amount of heat! My favorite by far was the beef patty - I've only ever had them preheated and having one freshly fried was a game changer. Topped everything off with an ice cold Ting - haven't had one of those in years. Kingston 99 Kitchen is a 10/10 recommend for me and surely worth coming out of your way for! read more

Found this wonderful enclave today. A unique group of businesses at The Plant in Pittsboro. We enjoyed sitting outside and stuffing ourselves on this amazing Jamaican cuisine. I had the jerk chicken sandwich and my friend had the shrimp tacos. We had a side of plantains and a side of mashed potatoes. The food came quickly and it was delicious. The grilled chicken and shrimp had a grilled flavor that only comes from a wood fire. There was a purple cabbage slaw that was fantastic. I would have given 5 stars except that there was only one thin napkin per person and the take out packaging wasn't environmentally friendly. Also, the mashed potatoes needed better seasoning (more salt). Great, friendly service. The atmosphere of the whole venue was laid back and friendly. What a gem. Very family friendly. read more

Meh ... The food was okay. Not great but edible. Unique flavors for sure, and I love international flavors, but it tasted like things were just thrown together and not thought out. The curry chicken was filled with small bones and grizzle and very hard to consume safely. Garlic mashed potatoes did not taste fresh. A hidden treasure indeed. This was my family's first time visiting Kingston 99 in Pittsboro, NC. When driving long distances, my family seek Caribbean restaurants (preferably Jamaican) to eat food that is familiar and healthy and, on this trip, we lucked out by visiting Kingston 99. We (3 people) ordered braised oxtail and whiskey jerk wings and had leftovers as the portion sizes are good. An additional plus for me was the ability pair my meal with a beer from Fair Game Beverage Company (Certified B Corporation). I was able to have a drink, relax and eat tasty food. It is hard pleasing my 90 year old mother who like most Jamaican mothers/grandmothers think that a restaurant cannot capture the essence of 'home cooking', but at Kingston 99, she ate and ate and ate. The owner was friendly and accommodating (my apologies for not remembering his name) and we enjoyed meeting him. What would I change? 1. Signage - when we first pulled into the parking lot, there was no signage indicating the restaurant so I had to leave my mom in the car while I investigated as I did not want her to walk from the parking lot if the restaurant did not exist. 2. Based on my review of the website two weeks ago and now, the website along with the menu board at the restaurant showed the soup of the day (red kidney bean) being out of stock. Please keep menus updated;(online menus are easy to edit and use an interactive menu board onsite. Almost sacrilegious not to have soup (regardless of the temperature) on a Saturday. read more

We were excited to try Kingston 99 Kitchen and it did not disappoint. The jerk chicken sandwich was perfectly seasoned and served on a soft toasted roll with fresh lettuce onion and tomato. The jerk burger was enormous and the ailoi gave it just the right amount of cool to complement the spices. Although I didn't try them myself, my friend raved about the oxtails and butter beans and I have to say they looked good. Everyone we spoke with at the restaurant was friendly and helpful. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather and open air. We plan to go back often. read more

I recently moved here from the Washington DC area. I have had the good fortune to dine at top restaurants all over the world, in Paris, Rome, New York, etc. This place is a wonderful combination of rustic and charming. Normally I reserve five stars for advanced cuisine but not here. Had the jerk pork with garlic mashed potatoes. Delicious, and couldn't finish it. It was spicy with a nice kick, but no lip burning. Great experience! A super friendly gentleman (the owner?) proudly served us from the Sunday buffet. I had a little bit of everything, all excellent, complementary flavors, authentic taste. Even my 12 year old daughter enjoyed her selections. The Sunday buffet is more expensive than I would normally consider but I liked supporting these guys, and it was fun to have a nice assortment including soups, as well as ample leftovers. We didn't see dessert there, (I hoped to try a little bread pudding), but we'll return for brunch again and I'll be sure to ask. And we'll return for a weekday meal as well. read more

Food tasted good but their prices are high especially when the portions sizes are so small.

This restaurant was such an unexpected and delicious treat! The jerk chicken sandwich had such a great flavor (just the perfect amount of spice!), and my boyfriend thought the Taco Carnival with all three types of meat (shrimp, jerk pork, and jerk chicken) was amazing. We even gave the fried plantains a try and were pleasantly surprised when we received two types - one on the sweeter side and the other savory. It's a small restaurant that focuses primarily on to-go orders and outdoor seating because it's located in a really cool area in conjunction with a brewery, a meadery, an art gallery, and other local shops and businesses. However, it does have a couple tables inside and some seats at a bar-style table. What sold me the most on the restaurant, though, was how inviting the owner was upon walking in the door. He greeted us immediately, chatted with us a while, told us all about the restaurant, and even told us a bit about the area. Such a personable guy! Their food and quick prep was great! They texted us when it was ready. This place is at 'The Plant', an eclectic collection of businesses, eateries, Tap Room, Brewery...down a looong road off Hwy 64 East - Business east of Pittsboro. We had an order of Jerk Chicken (the 'box'?) which was 2 pieces (either while or dark -- we chose dark meat), included rice & beans (or just rice), veggies which seemed like a sautéed red cabbage & onions mix. We were advised the portions were LARGE so only got 1, then ordered plantains as another side. Plenty of food! Everything was excellent -- the best jerked chicken we've ever eaten. The flavors of the rice/bean/cabbage were interesting & perfect. Plantains were soft, hot and flavorful. Next time we will get their 'spring' (?) rolls as a side; they are made with cod. You can take your food into the nextdoor tap room, eat and drink their wine & beer and be warm & toasty. read more
