It took Kingston native, Kern Dixon, less than 2 years after he began operating his food truck to open his brick and mortar place on S. Church Street. The restaurant has built a solid clientele, but not all have come away pleased with their experience, and I'm in that camp. I've tried the food here three times now, and it has been a real hit or miss situation, both as to food and service quality. I have tried the Oxtail (3times), Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken, rice and peas, and cabbage.! The Oxtail was excellent the first time, not quite as good the second (not as flavorful, less tender), and the last time it simply was not good - tough, bland! The Curry Chicken had very good flavor, but was full of small bones, no fun picking them out, dangerous as well. The Curried Goat was very. very good ~ I would definitely try this dish again. The Jerk Chicken was simply awesome, full of flavor and very tender - highly recommend. The Cabbage was excellent on 2 visits and dull and bland on the other - seemed like it was held over from a previous day'. The service is just more hit and miss, with more miss than hit. The time for food to come out of the kitchen is always long - for me the shortest was 45 minutes, while one was an hour and 10 minutes. Too many ifs and buts here for me, I'll not return. read more

When I first arrived around 5/530 pm a few customers were inside and by the time I ordered and sat down and waited on my food it got packed with a line. Only thing is they need to update there menu prices the side of chicken said 6$ and she charged me 9$ and had a lil attitude when I asked about it but hey when the food is good I can take a lil attitude and the man I'm guessing either a manager or the owner stepped in and kinda smoothed it out with his words. Cause I almost was ready to get it started cause that old lady in the front just gives off angry black women like she was tired of being there. Anywho I got a large curry goat plate with rice an peas steamed cabbage and Mac. With a side of jerk chicken and extra jerk sauce and a beef patty. Everything was great. I even stopped at the hair store and dollar tree before I ate my food in my truck and it was still hot and fresh. No complaints everything was great and the jerk chicken had that slice I needed and that beef patty was fresh soft and flaky when most times ppl let them sit all day and they get hard i at it while driving to the store. I would give it an 8/10 on the food and 5/10 on the customer service and on the wait w/ how busy it was I'll give it an 8.5/10 I only waited about 10 not more the. 15 mins for my food which isn't bad at all especially since it was busy and they had people calling in as well. read more

If you're going to order from this restaurant , I STRONGLY suggest you pick it up - that way you can check that what you've ordered is what they've actually given you . I've order escovish fish I was so excited for my meal when I opened container it was 1/2 fish. I get it that the fish is large but I didn't order 1/2 fish. I let that go I ordered same meal again it was like rice was scared barely any rice in the container. 2 meal cost about $45/$50 bucks and I don't mind paying it if I could get what I am paying for. I find that when it cost less you got more food now that it cost more you pay more and get less food so disappointed now I rather drive further to go spend my money and get the amount of food you should get in typical order. Every time I eat at Dixon's it is such an awesome experience. The food is so good. My husband and I always order the oxtail. They are delicious and you get a good portion. The rice and peas are good. Advice: taste your dishes before placing them on the menu. I will now order something else. On a positive note, I did get a bite of my son's oxtails. They were about a 3.2. They lacked flavoring and the sauce was a bit bland. I wish you well and don't like to leave bad reviews. The rice and peas was so good, cooked well and everything was seasoned perfectly. The large plates comes with 3 sides. Everything was delicious and only one person took a picture because we all dived into our plates. The place was clean, everyone was nice and the wait wasn't as long as I saw people say. When we entered, there were various people in the restaurant eating, ordering, and waiting. A woman was waiting before we arrived, and she remained a while longer after we ordered and waited. As they called her name and walked toward her with her food, her face gave way to an enormous smile as she rushed out of the restaurant. My parents were from Jamaica and the smells were familiar! Unlike the stereotype of rude Jamaican restaurant staff, everyone was pleasant and helpful. There was a board with the day's specials flow of orders in person and on the phone. Our food was delicious. My friend ordered a curry goat dinner and three sides; rice and peas (how Jamaican's say it) was a separate side. I have not had curry goat since 2011 when my sister last made it for me. My small sample was delicious, it looked and smelled like home. I ordered the jerk salmon dinner as I had never thought to jerk salmon. It was ok but nothing like the curry goat, however, the rice and peas! Oh my goodness, I could have eaten a pot of it. While we were there cooks came from the back and updated the front desk staff of unavailable items. I will definitely go back. They even said my name with the added "H" in front of Alison, which elicited warm memories of my childhood. The oxtails were tender and rice and peas were good. The cabbages were bomb! The Mac and cheese were ok. The inside is very clean. They have a visible menu and if you're a first time goer like I was, the regulars are super friendly. The ambience was welcoming; Jamaican music, Jamaican beverages, festive decorations. The wait time wasn't long, someone from the back brings your food up. Although it does not taste like what I had in the Caribbean, I would go back and try other items. We are new to the area and had been looking for a go to Jamaican spot, so we decided to give this place a try. Upon arriving, we noticed some nice art work on the walls of the restaurant which gave it a laid-back and welcoming ambiance. There were several people waiting in line which made us feel like we made a good choice in picking where to eat! The lady at the front was patient with everyone despite there being many customers waiting around and the restaurant phone ringing constantly. It was easy to place an order even through the commotion and we waited about 20 mins for our food. My boyfriend and I both went with simple dishes as our first try and got the jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, mac and cheese and plantains. The jerk chicken was delicious, juicy and fall off the bone! All of the sides we tried were great as well. I would give 5 stars to this restaurant easily but took one away due to all the commotion and seeming disorder there was between the orders and food pick up. With snow coming, I decided to grab a few dishes. The oxtail plate was okay. The fried plantains were good and the cabbage was really good. The rice and peas had a sweet taste to them which was a little, interesting. The oxtails were okay, I wished they were tender but they simply were between tough and tender. I really enjoyed the curry chicken roti! A little spice was in the dish. With the veggies in there, this dish was perfect. This place is absolutely unprofessional! First, I would like to say, a Jamaican restaurant does not have to play music on full BLAST to know, it's a Jamaican restaurant. A lion doesn't have to roar to prove it's a lion! I called to order and the music was so loud, she couldn't hear me..she put the phone down and all I could hear was music and the register, then a man comes to the phone who also couldn't hear and place the phone down. Why didn't anyone have the common courtesy to lower the music? Drove from Greensboro. We had the oxtail plate, jerk chicken plate, and Curry chicken. I consistently order around the same thing Jerk chicken plate with two sides or you can order the larger portion with 3 sides. My husband enjoys the oxtail plate. The peas and rice, mac and cheese, plantains, cabbage, and beef patties are just some of our favorites. We always order ahead because the wait can be long. There is a sitting area inside and out. Portions are hearty and can easily feed multiple people with one large plate. Prices are more than fair for what they give you. Their food is packed with flavor that keeps me coming back for more.
