I became a King's customer when we moved to Austin in 1989, and they were my gaming group's candy store for the next twenty yesrs. It's one of my first stops whenever I make a trip back home. If you're a gamer or model enthusiast this is THE place to go in Central Texas. They've got the best supply of RPGs and gear, plus books, models and more. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. My son came here back on 1/3/2019 to complete his railroading merit badge for boy scouts. My son not only earned his merit badge but gained a greater understanding of railroading and model trains. The shop is great for model air plane and model train enthusiast. Everyone in the store was extremely knowledgeable and seemed excited about the models there. I also discovered there is a group of model train enthusiast who meet here regularly and discuss their love and knowledge of trains. This is a fun little shop with much to see. read more

Stole my money for a pre-order that the new owner said they can't fulfill, not even a discount or partial credit.

Again, DO NOT consign with these people! Since my last review I took home some items they had from my collection. When I got home, unpacked and examined closely, I realized some of the best pieces of mine were missing which they claimed they couldn't sell, there were cheaper, undesirable items in place of mine in the wrong boxes and boxes were no longer the original boxes. I wonder who has my nice collectible items which were once in the collection? How much did King's get for them? Did someone walk away with them with no documentation or accountability? I certainly never saw any money from them. Some of my items which I was in fact able to get back from King's, I then listed on Facebook Marketplace and they sold within hours for a very high asking price! To reiterate from my original post, don't waste your time at King's. Don't trust your items to them. Highly untrustworthy business. read more

I pre-ordered through their website June of 2023. The release was pushed back by the manufacturer three times. It finally released and no product, no response when I tried to contact them via the website and e-mail I had from a previous transaction. I just got off the phone with them and they said they wouldn't be fulfilling my order or refunding my money. They said it would take to long to explain why they weren't and that was the end of the call. Stay away, take your business elsewhere. read more

What a great store. Yes, prices for a few things may be a bit higher than elsewhere, but King's Hobby has the most robust selection of model paints I've seen anywhere. Here's a list of miniature paints that stood out to me, as it's not readily apparent from their photos or website how awesome the selection really is: - Vallejo primers, Model Color, Model Air, Panzer Aces, Washes, Pigment powders - Scale75 Scalecolor - AK - Tamiya primers, paints, etc. For all you other minipainters out there, don't be limited by the Citadel stuff you can find in nearly every gaming store around town, and come here to get all those hard-to-find colors the day you want them. read more

November 2020, I consigned over 100 collectable items in original packaging with the owner. I was told he would contact me montly with progress and payment. I haven't heard a word from him. I have called multiple times and talked to employees that said they would get back to me or the owner would call. I'm a single mom and was going to put the money I made into savings for my six year old son. I told the owner this was my reason for consigning. He did not keep his word and is untrustworthy and a thief. read more

I'm more and more disappointed in Kings. Used to be a great resource with knowledgeable people. Tons of paints, which is good but fewer models. Additionally some of the staff isn't wearing masks as they feel it's not important and express their misguided, ill informed opinions about COVID and paranoid political views. For hobby shop needs, King's reigns supreme. Being the son of an avid plastic model builder, I grew up learning things many other kids didn't--like how to clean an airbrush and how to assemble something using modeller's glue without getting glue fingerprints everywhere. Some of my earliest, and fondest memories, are of travelling to King's Hobby Shop on a Saturday afternoon with my Dad to look at the new kits and/or stock up on supplies. But I'm not the only one who's been coming here for close to three decades now. As far as hobby shops go, King's is known as one of the best--not just in Texas, but throughout the United States. There are two big reasons for this--the first being selection. King's has an extensive selection of plastic, build-it-yourself models across various genres, modelling supplies (paint, sandpaper, airbrushes, etc.) and reference materials. It doesn't stop there, though, because they also have a large area dedicated to model railroading and carry slot cars too. Besides the inventory, the second thing that really makes this place special are the people. The words "employee turnover" and "King's Hobby Shop" will be never be shared in the same sentence simply because everyone who works here has been here for, what seems like, a decade or more. The result is a staff that's highly knowledgeable on the product, can offer useful suggestions, and is always in the know on the latest and greatest in the hobby world. Pretty cool store! Recently just got back Into model building. This store reminds me of all the hobby shops that used to be commonplace when I was a kid,sadly, most of these shops have been replaced by the internet. Kings hobby is like going back in time, all the boxes of models, paints supplies etc. I spent almost an hour just browsing all the kits and supplies. The paint prices are excellent and better than amazon. They also have the BEST paint selection in Austin. They have a full selection of Tamiya and Mr Hobby paints, also have Vallejo, mission model and testors. Most of the hobbytowns in Austin don't ever stock there paint. I always come here to buy paint. I don't mind paying a bit extra sometimes to support a local business. Stores like these are rare gems nowadays, so it's always good to be able to go into one and support it. They also had a consignment section where people would sell vintage/usemodel kitsThey have tons of stuff also from scale modeling to trains to Rc cars. Inside the shop there was also a comic book/card type store, overall pretty cool place. It is fun to walk around and look at all the models Kings has on display, would recommend. read more

I've been going to hobby shops for many, many years. The hobby "industry" has changed a great deal with the advent of the internet, and the number of hobby shops has, sadly, dwindled. In this age of disappearing hobby shops, I'm so glad that King's exists and that it's just down the street. They do a great job of stocking the new, cool sets. They have a great connection to the local community. And they do a wonderful job of making newbies (like me after having returned to the hobby after several decades away) feel comfortable and welcomed. No question feels like a dumb one. read more

My COVID hobby has become building scale models like I did as a kid. The folks at Kings have been excellent in helping get me back up to speed and help me find what I am looking for. One of the models I purchased had a poorly formed part from the manufacturer and they took on the problem, contacted the company, and got me a replacement within a week. Recently decided to relive my 12 year hobby of model building. Ordered a couple kits online to see if I still enjoyed it - I think I like it more now. Decided since I have more patience and money than 12 year old me I'd go get some advice. The guys at Kings are wonderful. Very knowledgeable about various kits, paints and techniques. Consignments are not tracked, not responded to, and unpaid for 6-months. If you think of consigning hobby items, be ready to "donate" them to King's as you won't hear back what has sold and for how much and, if you're lucky, you might eventually get a payment and it will be for pennies on the dollar of the value you gave to King's. I might not mind getting so little, but the complete lack of accounting for what they took from you is really unsettling. Emails can go unanswered and when they are, it's without any actual information about what you sold and for how much. read more

I've been going to King's Hobby since the late 70's before it expanded to take over the whole building. I have experienced consistant friendly service and quality products. Their knowledge of models and modeling techniques is fantastic. I perfer building armor models and have found I can't afford many of the new kits King's Hobby carries. I first came to Austin in 1984, and soon afterwards, found King's Hobby. My first visit made me realize that the standard of modeling in Austin was much greater than anything I'd see up until then at Dallas and El Paso area hobby shops. In Fact, their display case had a wonderful diorama that I recognized as being built by Shep Payne, one of the truly legendary modelers. I have know many of the owner and employees since that time, and have always been helped with whatever my projects were. I have never felt out of place. It has been rare that they weren't able to help out with parts needed, whether it was for model cars, rockets, airplanes, figures, or just scratch building. They carry a large range of materials like balsa, various metals, and plastic. A wide range of kits, both new and pre-owned are available in the store. Reference books are plentiful. Model railroad and tracks. And they do carry a lot more that I have no clue about, such as games. I highly recommend them for their selection, their helpfulness, and their professional manner of dealing with customers. read more

They got me setup with all my stuff, nothing I didn't need. 5 years later the model is still unfinished but I remmber the experience. I have to preface my review by saying that in some ways, I am a direct competitor to Kings Hobby Shop, as I own a slot car shop. That being said, I am still a huge fan of King's for the things I don't carry or don't have in stock when I need it. They have a great inventory of plastic models, military models and art, trains, and yes, slot cars. The staff is great, as they have been there for years and all know the store and their customers well. I would give them 5 stars, but some of their prices on some of their items can be a bit on the high side. This is one of those places that makes me thankful, in general, for other people. Thanks to King's Hobby, I do not have to learn all there is to know about models and model building and what's a good buy and what to avoid. Holy lord help me if I did. These guys are calm and thoughtful. They are happy to help, and their kindness has served us extremely well. Even thinking hard, I cannot come up with much that could be outside their expertise in the model arena. They treat my 10-year-old son as a peer, with kindness and respect. He considers this "his" place, not mine, and is comfortable asking questions and sharing his opinions. I've never even bothered to compare their prices with anything online.
