Ray: Last night Josh told me he had another bar in mind for us to try out. He was thinking of Kings Hardware in Ballard. This place is part of a chain of locally owned restaurants in the Seattle area. So, we headed out into the warm evening to get some grub.
Kings Hardware is located in a sort of restaurant row. There were several places to eat all along this one Ballard block. I could hear the clinking of plates and glasses and smell the assorted foods lingering in the warm air as we walked along.
Kings hardware is decorated pretty unusual. The floors are old wood slats that give sort of a hunting lodge feel to it with taxidermy everywhere. We seated ourselves in the main dining room. Our waitress approached and greeted us. She brought the menus over and I couldn't help but notice that she smelled very good! I was a little distracted by that, but in a good way... The menu was a little limited. Mostly appetizers, but they did have a nice burger menu with lots of options. I went with the Kings Burger. You know - bacon, cheddar, grilled onions and mushrooms. I was asked how I like it cooked, so I said medium.
I was sipping my Manny's Ale when the meal arrived. The bacon on the burger was topped in an X with the cheese melted over the top. It looked really appetizing. But, when I ate the sucker, I noticed that it was cooked a little more than medium well. I had to wonder why they even ask, I mean, the burger itself was only about an inch thick, so that makes it tough to cook to order like that. You need some mass to pull that off in my opinion. Anyway, it wasn't like the burger was bad or something. I really quite enjoyed it. But it wasn't medium, just sayin...
Overall the service was pretty good. We were never left with plates on the table or empty glasses. They were all over that. I am thinking of three or four stars for this establishment. I have seen better and I have seen worse. It was the service that made the difference to me, so I am awarding Kings Hardware four stars. Though there is room for improvement, it was still an enjoyable experience, and that's a good thing.
Josh: Hungry tummies led us to Ballard once again, this time headed for King's Hardware. Another place I've been to a couple times, but never really looked at with a reviewer's eye. Their dining room is rustic themed with lots of taxidermy on the walls, somewhat similar to Smith on Capitol Hill (both places having the same owner along with Linda's, Tallullah's, The Bait Shop, etc.). King's is one of the few places with skee ball. Nice and nostalgic.
We took a seat in a booth close to the bar. There weren't many people there so the server came right over with menus and water, then back a moment later to take the drink orders. The menu is mostly hamburgers, I was liking the looks of the "not buffalo burger" so I ordered it.
It arrived in no time flat. The plate looked delicious, just exactly as advertised. I suppose the hot sauce they used (Frank's) could have been spicier, I don't mind a little pain with my meal, but I can't exactly fault King's for that. The burger was still quite delicious.
All in all the service was flawless, the food was delicious. I have no problem going with a 5 star rating for King's. read more
