Introduction: I have had their pork chop rice bento on several occasions and today I finally decided to pay this place a visit during lunch and pig out. I got their pork chop rice, steamed bamboo shoots and Fuzhou fish ball soup. Food: The main reason I decide to come here is because I am hooked on their pork chop: the meat quality is really good, it's tender and the meat juice flows into the palate with each bite. It's the best pork chop I have eaten in the SGV area by far. At other "Taiwanese" establishments the pork chops tend to be either overcooked or too greasy/oily. As for the rice, the minced pork along with the sauce bears a homey flavor and taste to it that's rarely found at conventional restaurants. It's the kind of flavor only found in Taiwanese households where the matriarch cooks well. The steamed bamboo shoots are great: it's tender and sweet. Other restaurants' bamboo shoots are often either sour or at times slightly bitter. The steamed bamboo shoots go great with any of the other rice dishes on the menu. I recommend getting the Fuzhou fish ball soup because the broth's flavor is on point: it's lightly peppered, clean, light, balanced and smooth. There's no MSG in the soup whatsoever. The Fuzhou fish balls are delicious in the sense the fish balls' texture is bouncy and its interior filling is handmade. Ambiance: Casual, mom and pop shop Service: Adequate Price: Affordable Overall: It's hard to find a place that serves legitimate Taiwanese cuisine; there are many that claims to be Taiwanese restaurants but often the flavors of the dishes from such establishments are deficient, off or downright terrible. I love this place! This is probably my new go-to pork chop rice spot. It used to be Taipei Golden Garden blah blah blah but now it's Kingchop. I used to love supreme dragon's pork chop rice but this one comes with so much more! My gf found this place and raved about it so we went here after getting our hair did and I always stop by when I'm in the area even just to get one to go. The place is pretty small and there's only two ppl serving and there can be a wait sometimes but it's worth it. I get the pork chop rice and it usually comes with a veggie side, sauteed bean curd, a soup and half a marinated egg. The sides are always good but the best part is the pork chop. It's not too fried or breaded and it's super juicy. I also get the boiled veggies (usually A-choy w/ meat sauce), marinated cucumbers and steamed bamboo just because I love vegetables and they're yummy. This place is always consistent and very budget-friendly. It amazes me how little they charge for all that goodness. It's definitely Taiwanese comfort food...I miss it already. read more

We started off with their cold cucumber and seaweed. The seaweed looks a little different than the norm but my friend said that it was straight up Taiwanese. I guess that's a good thing! Both were flavored perfectly. The cucumber was my favorite as it had a bit of spice in it. My friend and I each got a bowl of the minced beef on rice and shared their signature fried pork chop dish. My oh my. The fried pork chop quality was PERFECT! It wasn't overly fried and the breading wasn't thick so the texture was crispy yet still so soft and tender. The flavoring was salty but with a hint of sugary sweetness. The meat was thick and juicy. It's the best pork chop I've ever had. Their pork chop rice is the best!! If I'm not feeling rice, then I'll get the noodle soup (which comes with vegetables, tea egg, relish and noodle) If you don't eat/want pork their fried chicken leg is also very tasty. They also provide free tea!!!! It's not your regular black tea either.. it's some type of sweetened jasmine green tea or something but it is soooo good. Serve yourself at the front. Back in America, where the margins are steeper and the taxes and COGS deeper, this is a great and affordable spot to get your pork chop grub on. The cold one is sweetened big time, my recommendation is to use the hot unsweetened green tea to dilute the cold sweet one, and reconstitute it with some ice to cut the sugar. I believe it is a one family show, including a young child who has her own coloring station and book club going on in the back of the dining room. Don't get me wrong, the pork chop is still good, but the noodles were a little over cooked and a little oily for my liking. I have to give a rating for this place. According to my mom, this is a popular joint in Taiwan, though I've never tried it myself so I came in with high expectations. Got the pork chop rice, fried tofu and fish ball soup. The way they do things is they give you the rice portion first, then the pork chop comes after. I was half way thru my rice and the pork chop still wasn't served so I decided to stop, didn't want to eat the pork chop by itself. Apparently, they forgot about it...how though? Just serving us rice?? Can you even order "just rice" here?? The pork chop is fried first, then soaked in the sauce for a little bit, so it's not the crunchy type, but the taste wasn't bad at all, also not too greasy. The fish ball soup was whatever's, could get by without it, the fried tofu was not bad though. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Finally, the service is pretty inattentive. Starting with the pork chop being forgotten, then we asked for the check and a to-go box, the check came, and the box never did. I eventually got sick of waiting so I went up to the counter to ask for it. The #1 is filling and comes with half of an egg, bean curd, broccoli and a bowl of soup. Although the nice waitress spoke to us only in Mandarin, you are given a paper menu to write down and relay your order. The food comes out quickly and steaming hot. CASH ONLY. The Taiwanese pork chop dish is as close to authentic as can be. The major difference would be the natural flavor/essence of the pork. The simple fact is, the pork in Taiwan has a different taste than the pork in the United States. Actually, now that I think of it, it's not just the meat but also the produce that tastes different in other countries compared to the USA (unless of course we import it from that country). Going back to their signature dish - the way that the pork chop is prepared and seasoned at this restaurant, is pretty close to how it's prepared in Taiwan (minus the paper box package secured by a rubber band). I tried a few of the side dishes as well and the must get is the bamboo shoots (#19)! The others were good but not a must for me. The owner, Penny (short hair and super skinny), does not smile much but is warm and nice when you converse with her in Mandarin. Plenty of parking spaces available in the strip mall. read more

My mom had recommended this place to me for fried pork chops and fried chicken leg. I had been really sad since my favorite pork chop rice place, Plaza Deli, closed recently. I finally decided to try this place for lunch. The place is really small and there were a lot of people, so I figured it was a good sign. We walked in and sat down. No one came to give us a menu or to take our order, so I figured this is the type of restaurant where there's no waiter service. So my mom walked to the front cashier and placed our order. They had a big thermos of hot tea where you serve yourself. She grabbed some hot tea and sat back down. We ended up trying one pork chop rice and one fried chicken leg rice. We were brought our food a few minutes later. The small mound of rice was mushy, soggy, and overcooked. How does an Asian restaurant mess up rice?? That's just embarrassing. There were two side dishes next to the rice which consisted of a cold veggie dish and some braised bean curd and half a soy sauce egg...really?...Half an egg? Other places usually give you a whole egg....the veggie and bean curd side dishes were pretty good tho....The chicken leg and pork chop arrived shortly after on a separate plate. The fried chicken leg was ok, tasted good, but there was a lot of fat surrounding the meat. I didn't like the pork chop at all, it was barely coated and was dried out. They later brought out a soup which looked like seaweed and egg soup...which is one of my favorite soups...but it tasted really "off"....can't really describe the taste..but it kinda tasted like what stale seaweed would smell like. Gross. We finished our food and my mom walked back up to pay the bill. The food is so not worth the price they charge. I think it was around $7.50 per plate. My mom was on the phone so she left the restaurant right after she payed the bill at the counter while I finished the rest of my food. As I got up to leave, the owner of the restaurant (i think, it was an older woman)...came to my table and tapped me on the shoulder as I got up and said we need to leave tip. Since I didn't go up with my mom to pay the bill, I didn't know if she had left it up front when she paid the bill, so I went out to ask her. She mom said she totally forgot since she was on the phone and went back in and left $2 on the table. I was livid by then and told her not to leave anything....but my mom kept saying it was her own fault for not paying attention since she was on the phone and walking out of the restaurant before leaving tip on the table. My mom is too damn nice. That's not the point...the point is that they have the audacity to demand tips from customers when they failed to provide good customer service. OMG..who the hell runs after a customer to demand tip for shitty service???? There was literally NO SERVICE whatsoever other than having our food brought out. WE walked to the front counter to order, WE got out own drinks, WE walked up to pay the bill...no one came to check on us....we basically serviced ourselves...and the owner thinks that kind of service deserves tip?? Under normal circumstances, I would have still left tip for this kind of restaurant since I worked in restaurants during college...we usually leave 15-20% even for just average service since I know how hard it is.... But I'm mostly pissed off that they would come out and DEMAND tip for service they didn't provide!! Tips are based on the quality of service you receive...with their attitude, they might as well just add it to the bill and call it a day! I will never come back to this place. It took me awhile to find this place. I was looking for their old place called Taipei Golden Garden Pork Chop Noodle & Rice inside the Diamond Plaza on the other side of the freeway. After glancing at their picture, I finally found their new address and name....Jin Yuan. Small little restaurant located inside Pho Ha, Smart & Final & Asia Buffet plaza. I ordered the soft tofu with 1,000 year old egg & pork chop rice. Soft Tofu with 1,000 year old egg (Pi-Dan) - the soft tofu was fresh & tasty. If you had never had 1,000 year old egg or Pi-Dan, it's an acquired taste! It's kind of like eating stinky tofu....yes it's not for everyone! Pork Chop Rice - white rice, with minced pork marinade on top, side of hard tofu, broccoli, a bowl of soup of the day which was like a miso based soup with seaweed, tofu and egg, & of course fried pork chop. Delicious! The pork chop was just cooked to perfection! Will I be back? Of course! Maybe try something else on their menu. One last thing, CASH ONLY!
