How long has it been? Probably close to fifteen or more... When my former place of employment closed nine years ago, my annual trips to Southern California stopped. Despite our work assignment being in Orange County, we always made time to make our way to this area before flying home. Like my visit to the bakery a few doors away, I have not physically come here for likely close to 20 years. I remember dining here with a friend on our last work visit together but only had one dish here. My Chinese literacy is limited to the products that my employer used to sell and basic words that I learned in Chinese grammar school. Tofu King sells Stinky Tofu. This restaurant makes it extremely easy to order with the first page when you open the menu a picture of all their best sellers. This is Taiwanese fare and it doesn't disappoint. I ordered the regular stinky tofu, they have it in bite-sized fried or the wet one in spicy soup. It was tasty and the cabbage was generous. We ordered the mushroom sliced pork rice with egg ($9.99), stinky tofu (9.99), and a beef stew noodle ($13.99). The place is small inside, and it is located at a rundown shopping plaza. Our food came out quickly. We liked the sliced pork rice with egg. It was not the best, but it was a comfort meal and flavorful. The Stinky Tofu was okay, but they were a bit too dry. I liked that they gave us a lot of pickled vegetables. The sauce could be thicker and better. For the beef stew noodle, the beef was tender and flavorful. The broth had a herbal taste, and I liked it, but my hubby did not like the broth. The service was good, and the lady was attentive. If you pay more than $25, then you can pay by credit card. A quick update for this place, thankfully it's still around. There's very few places around this part that brings nearly authentic Taiwanese food like this place. If you want to save money and time flying to Taiwan to try all the delicious snacks and meals, this place is a good start to save. Different places in Taiwan offer more "authentic places", and different styles of dishes, so comparing the two wouldn't be fair. But one bite into the stinky tofu, brings me that comforting, street vendor food memories flooding back. Service is friendly, the ladies are helpful. If you can't speak or read Chinese, it's okay, dishes have pictures. Try all the dishes, try the stinky tofu. Definitely very hidden! My friend had to come find me to take me to find this spot. Very small hole in the wall/mom & pops spot. Service was decent, nothing notable. Not surprised how long this place lasted for around 15 years with comforting home cooked taste. There's someone cooking stinky tofu outdoors. There's definitely that stink in the air that clings on your clothes so keep that in mind if you have something important to attend afterwards. The stinky tofu wasn't stinky enough itself compared to Chinese versions, but the sauce and pickled vegetables does save it. It's got a bit of a crunch, but not as much as I'm used to. Came here on a Saturday around 4PM and there were 2-3 people ahead of me. I don't know why but this place was hard for me to find. It is located outside, tucked in the corner, in an alley. It looked a bit suspicious at first, but the pungent smell will be obvious as you walk closer to it. Anyways, I ordered the regular sized stinky tofu. I waited approximately 10 minutes for my order. It had a slight kick of sweetness, some umami, and salty flavor. It was unique and interesting since the tofu was able to absorb some of the sauce. As for my mom, who grew up eating this, thought it wasn't fermented enough. Regardless, it was worth the try since there wasn't that many places around here that sells this. Trust me I've looked long and hard, and there is no other place that compares to what they serve in Taiwan than tofu King. A serving runs for about $10.50. I feel like that's a steal right now in this economy. The tofu is fried perfectly and is laid on a bed of really delicious garlic soy sauce, and they're delicious pickled vegetable! The barely tea was kinda sweet, I like it natural without sugar. The stinky tofu looks and tastes like fry tofu, there wasn't really any smell to it like I was hoping. I thought it was going to be like that king of fruits, the Dorian, the ones that loves it would say it smells like peaches and the ones that hates would say it smell like feet that you haven't washed for days lol. The tofu doesn't have any smell to it, kinda disappointed. I asked the boss lady and she said health department doesn't allow it so they made no too smelly. It was kinda dry too. The pickled vegetables that came with it was pretty good, it helps with the dry tofu. I also ordered their most popular items, the mushrooms minced pork with egg over rice. When I took the first bite, it reminded me of my mom's braised pork belly with mustard greens but is not sweet like here. Is really flavorful and my mom uses 10 different types of herbs to make it. Also we eat it in big chunks with white rice is the best, half fat half skinny just like char shi lol overall, the food was good. Very local spot It's great to see non Taiwanese people eat here now and try this local delicacy from Taiwan. I always get on order of fried stinky tofu and a small combo minced pork over rice. It doesn't get more authentic than this place, reminds me of the alleyways of Taipei, my aunt making this dish, just everything. I think this spots been here over 20 years? First came to visit when I moved from California because this tofu dish isn't the easiest to find. I will always treasure this spot because my entire family enjoys it and loves the stink! Nice to see there are still restaurants like Tofu King that proudly fly the Taiwanese "small eats" (snacks) flag as there have never been many options for Taiwanese food even in the SGV. It had been awhile since I ate here but had a hankering for Taiwanese food so I came here for lunch. Context: I'm ABC parents from HK so I'm not used to Taiwanese food but my favorite porkchop rice is from the Irvine location Got something similar with the meat being different after realizing they don't have the exact same menu :( Overall, I think it's solid but not top tier. Coming to Rowland Heights, I was excited to eat Taiwanese food. This spot did not disappoint. My family and I shared a bunch of dishes: stinky tofu, beef noodle soup, Taiwanese sausage, braised pork belly over rice and luroufan. My favorite thing I tried was the luroufan, very fatty and the sauce seeps well through the rice. I also liked the beef noodle soup, tastes very traditional and the tendon and beef were so good. However the broth was a tad on the sweeter end so I had to add some chili oil to my bowl. The braised pork over rice was fine but the pork belly was on the tougher side. But still good! And for the stinky tofu, it was good, but I think it could be better. This spot is very hole in the wall so I appreciated the more traditional feels. Really shocked that is place serves a decent stinky tofu! As well as a decent lu rou fan and the ever-elusive tung tzai mi gao which I haven't had since I was a pre-teen. Holy moly. After seeing how long the stinky tofu line was at the Lunar New Year Festival in Monterey Park, I decided to stop by Tofu King the next day and ordered a take-out (not entirely intentional since I was in the area for other reasons anyway). [Parking]: Not an issue as the plaza is pretty dead. [Ordering/menu]: This is one of few places in the SGV (San Gabriel Valley) area that specializes in stinky tofu. There are other authentic Taiwanese dishes listed on the menu that you won't find in other commonly seen Northern style Chinese noodle restaurants. There's an outdoor patio and dine-in option is also available with limited tables. *** Stinky tofu ($7.99): I got this as a take-out order and it was ready in approximately 10 minutes. Unfortunately tofu was not tender and texture was firm. In addition tofu wasn't marinated enough with garlic soy sauce. Lastly Taiwanese fermented pickled cabbage tasted slightly too salty for me. *** I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying stinky tofu from this place as there aren't too many options out there, but there are certainly better Taiwanese pickled cabbage (1/3 of key components of stinky tofu) because I just had some pretty good Taiwanese pickled cabbage from Sinbala in Arcadia just a week ago. read more

Basically going for the nostalgia only, I truthly believe I can make my entrees better even though I'm not a chef by any means. My meal was 31$ including tips for 1 person. Ordered stinky tofu, fan tuan and pork belly rice. Only entree tastes good was stinky tofu. Service was friendly, but driving 20 minutes for Stinky tofu snack is not worth the drive. read more
