Great meals with philosophical friends (1 of 2) My friend who hails from and now again lives in the western suburbs of CLE introduced me to Joe's Fine Deli and this Chinese restaurant - King Wah - which are considered area gold standards for their respective cuisines and have stood the test of time. My friend said that they might have done some remodeling and might be "off line." Their website and my phone call confirmed that they were open for business. Thus, going here was then easily agreed upon. I don't write too many reviews for Chinese restaurants. That said, allow me to be a jerk and bring up some dynamics I see - not so much with Asian food - but with consumers of Asian food. In the tech suburbs on Portland's west side, I have been in eateries where WASPy and "boring as watching paint dry" techies come in for a take-out order of lunch. These same guys sing the praises for Thai and Indian food, which they order with a high spice quotient, and I wonder if it's to counterbalance their lack of personal pep. I have eaten spicy food from these regions on a few occasions that I ordered in "dumbed down" form, my nose ran the entire time, and I wound up later going home sick. Back to King Wah. I'm open to ethnically diverse food. It just cannot be spicy. King Wah serves up the broad spectrum of Cantonese staples that Americans often choose and love. They might offer some menu items beyond Cantonese ones. Spicy items on the menu are clearly identified with the "hot pepper" icon. For me, ordering in a Chinese restaurant is a no-brainer. Is it going to be cashew chicken, lemon chicken, or beef broccoli? I had the cashew chicken. My friend ordered one of the fish entrees. We sampled each other's food and both dishes received the nod of approval. I liked my cashew chicken because it was a very satisfying larger portion that was also very tasty. The interior is clean and features some of the decor you may often see in Chinese restaurants. The service was excellent - low key, polite, and informative. Because the fried rice is "sold" separately, the overall tab might be a tad higher, but not by much. I will now go off on another tangent. I ponder some strange angles to situations. It's obvious that the management and most of the staff at King Wah might hail from China. I wonder what it must be like to come to the U.S., open a restaurant in a catchment area that is mostly non-ethnic Americans, and become the greatest thing since sliced bread to your customer base. I'm just trying to process their perceptions and acclimation along a trek that non-ethnic Americans will never experience. (For what it's worth, my foreign-born parents certainly went through this, albeit not as restauranteurs.) It's all good because it happens to every immigrant group that opens up what become popular restaurants in the U.S. and Canada and it's an interesting thing to watch unfold ... at least to me. Again, I don't partake in this cuisine often, but when I'm ready to go, I'm ready! I'm not giving this restaurant 5 stars because I was hoping that that dollop of fried rice would have come with the meal, but King Wah is clearly a 4 star experience and I would recommend it highly to aficionados of more mainstream Cantonese Chinese cuisine. read more

So, this has been my favorite Chinese restaurant on the west side for years. Unfortunately, tonight was not the typically excellent experience. Ordered takeout on a Friday night. Food was ready when I arrived, and the woman at the bar who handled the takeout orders was pleasant. The problem was the food itself. My son enjoyed his Orange Chicken, and the crab Rangoon and egg rolls were good. However, my General Tso's chicken was not very good at all. Mostly breading, and what chicken existed was overcooked and tough. I will not be ordering that dish again from here. I'll try another one of my favorites next time, but I can make better General Tso's at home using my air fryer. read more

Things have changed at King Wah. My family in Ohio eats here often. Whenever we go back home to visit it is our go to place for Chinese food. Sorry to say we were a bit dissatisfied this go round though we were warned that the quality has suffered a bit. Our server was friendly and prompt but did not know the menu items very well. Hence we ordered some dishes with substitutes though we may not have needed to do this. Turns out the substitutes are costly. Some $2 and some $3. Had she told us this we would have not added $12 to our bill on two of the entrees. Instead we would have asked for someone who knew the menu better regarding the veggies and nuts in each dish. Two out of five entrees had very little chicken as compared to the other three. 3-4 small to medium pieces of chicken is just not enough in an entree. I hope they get a handle on this before their business suffers. read more

I've only ever gotten takeout from here but what is now becoming my usual order has never left me feeling disappointed. What do I order you may ask? Shrimp Ho Fun. No notes. Just get it, you won't regret it. Now you may ask me, Christina where is the photo? And I would answer you good sir or madam, that no one has time to take a photo when you've ordered Chinese takeaway in the middle of the week after a long day at work. Place is fantastic and iconic in Rocky River. This is where most of us went for winter formal dinner in high school. I would call this really high end Chinese food restaurant. Food is fantastic and IMO the best egg foo young. Service has always been top notch and still to this day. Also very very clean restaurant. Came here during the holidays with some friends...place was packed! We were seated fairly quickly, but due to the large crowds the service was extremely slow. Fortunately, when the food arrived, it was hot and fresh. I ordered a General Tso's chicken dish with fried rice and also a vegetable egg roll. All items tasted reasonably good (by Americanized Chinese food standards) and the portion was sizeable. Glad we gave this place a try and if in the area again, I might consider returning. read more

I've been a patron here since the 1970's. What has happened!? I dined in for dinner craving a great meal and served, in my opinion, slop... So very disappointing... The won ton soup was far, far too salty. The shrimp chips tasted stale. My entree was so disgusting to me that I threw the left overs -take home box in the gas station garbage can. It was stinking up my car. I'm so disappointed and vowed never to return after almost 50 years of dining here. Even the hostess & owner were crabby. I should have turned around and left when I first noticed their nastiness. I'm an easy going, never much of a complaining gal but tonight's dinner was a pure waste of $36 and a pure dud. How dare you charge our credit card a 20% tip and hand us a receipt that never stated details with light black writing we couldn't read. I had to ask why our bill was so much money. The waitress brought the manager over and both said, "it was a computer error". No , it wasn't! It was intentional How many people are getting charged for a AUTOMATIC 20% TIP on their bill and also leaving 20-% tip cash on the table. Very sneaky handing us a bill with no details and automatically helping themselves to our credit card. I seriously, doubt we will be back. We tried this place based on google review 4.4 . It may not be an authentic Chinese place . I would term it as an American Chinese place . We ordered kung pao and Hong Kong chicken with Szechuan sauce . Both had the spicy sign . Unfortunately both dish was VERY VERY SWEET . It felt like eating chicken with maple syrup . A basic kung pao or Szechuan dish will be minimum spicy and not this sweet . This definitely is not even basic chinese . read more

We arrived at 8:48 p.m. not realizing they closed at 9 they were so very very nice seated my wife and myself and served us as if we could stay as long as we needed! We ordered very quickly and ate the very best Orange Chicken, Steamed rice, Wonton Soup that we have ever had the pleasure to eat! The waitress was unbelievably gracious as well as the owner! We've enjoyed their food for decades now - our favorites are the Beef with Broccoli, Szechuan Shrimp or Shrimp Lo Mein, and General Tso's Chicken with sides of Egg Rolls and Crab Rangoon. If you want Americanized Chinese food, this is the place for you. The hot & sour soup was sour and left nothing to desire. It's the worst I've had and I've had plenty from other restaurants in the area. The General Tso chicken was very tangy, there was no balance in flavor. I went for the two safest items on their menu, but aren't impressed. I spent $18 for lunch expecting a decent meal, but quite disappointed. There are other Chinese restaurants that offer better food than King Wah. So save your money and dine elsewhere. P.S. the hostess was a bit rude when she took my order. read more

Great American-Chinese food. Service is very friendly and they get the take out orders right every single time. After a while they'll know your name! Maybe I'm old school but I love it when a business recognizes its customers especially if they're as busy as this place. You can modify your dish (I've only asked for reasonable modifications like no peanuts) and ask for them to make it more or less hot. One of my favorite dishes is the Mai Fun fun some extra sauce on the side. Last month, I picked my mom up from surgery and wanted to take her out for an early and special dinner. Our family has gone to King Wahs on Christmas Eve for over 20 years, so it's very nostalgic for us. Haven't been there in a bit, but thought it might be special to go that day. Walked in to a very disinterested hostess who begrudgingly led us through the restaurant and threw two menus onto a table for us just outside the kitchen doors. Despite not being busy at 4pm, we waited nearly 15 minutes to even get the attention of our waitress who finally came over to take our orders. Had some difficulty with ordering due to language barrier and lack of knowledge on the part of the waitress. It took several minutes and calling over the bartending to get a manhattan ordered as the waitress didn't know what it was. Finally ordered our food which all came out at different times, making it difficult to keep warm and eat together. The food was fine, but admittedly not great. Whatever, that was all mildly annoying and not a great dining experience, but we enjoyed each other's company. We go to pay and I mentally do the rough math of 15%. Our waitress picks up the check while we're finishing the dregs of our drinks and we hear her start YELLING in the kitchen, just on the other side of the door from where we're sitting. She comes back and angrily grabs the dishes off our table and my mom actually asks if something is wrong? The waitress literally says "you gave me less than 18% on the tip! I can go get the receipt and bring it back so you can tip me more." Definitely a first for both of us and made us so incredibly uncomfortable. Love their egg rolls, but can't say we'll ever be back again. read more

Never again! Been dining here routinely for 20+ years. Stopped in for the first time in 2024 and sadly will not return. They have changed and not for the better. Atmosphere still good, crowded but not overly loud. Menu changed; old favorites gone, no shrimp chips upon arrival. Food was bland, minimal flavor. Wife's chicken was advertised as spicy, it was not and came out cold. Red wine glass tasted like it had been opened for days. Server was poor. Forgot our wonton soup, never asked for refills. She followed us out the door complaining after we left a 15% tip on the food, not the tax. She deserved zero tip, and I told her so. Too bad, King Wah was always our old reliable place to go. King Wah is a NE Ohio staple. If you don't know Connie and her Mai Tai, then you certainly need to get here. It's one of my favorite spots to order to go from and chill at the bar with above said cocktail. Connie is like a machine when the restaurant is busy, she can literally handle customers 10 at a time and doesn't miss a beat, all die with a smile! The food: honestly it's well overpriced for above average Chinese food but it won't stop me or anyone else in the area from going back. I mean charging $18 for sweet and sour chicken is bananas but I still pay it! It's good along with the sesame chicken and spring rolls. I rarely get out of there for less than $70 on to go dinner for a small family but it's an experience I look forward to every few weeks. 1 vote for Connie for best bartender ever! read more

I have enjoyed both dining in and to-go/takeout entrees and side dishes at King Wah often when in the NE Ohio area. I would rate these past experiences at a 4.5. Unfortunately, this past week I called to request a to- go/takeout order of a Chicken Entree and a side of Sui Mei. I was somewhat abruptly told the Sui Mei was only served as a dine-in. Say what? Having ordered Sui Mei from the Hom family's other restaurant Eastside Li Wah to-go many times, I was shocked and disappointed this is not possible at the Westside King Wah. It is one of my favorite Chinese side dishes and having dined at many Asian/Chinese restaurants never been told Sui Mei is for dine-in only. Why is that Mr. Hom? In today's fast-paced world, so many of us want the convenience of to-go food service. To-go service is time-saving and offers families and friends the opportunity to eat in the comfort of our homes. To-go also offers elderly and other health immune-impaired customers the chance to still receive quality restaurant food without public dine-in exposure to Covid-19, flu, RSV and other respiratory and bacterial infections that could be harmful to their health. Dine-in is many times not the first choice, nor the best option for many customers. That is why to-go/takeout food is so successful! I cancelled my order and will rethink any future support for King Wah as clearly they do not consider the 2024 needs/convenience of their customers as their first priority. I want to support local businesses, but there is no logic as a restaurant for King Wah to not offering such a popular dish as Sui Mei as a to-go/takeout option on their menu. Please reconsider - allow both dine-in and togo choices - and support your customers with Sui Mei as a to-go choice. Till Mr. Hom decides to support what his customers want - and make more money! - I will be eating elsewhere and the opportunity for increased sales and satisfied customers will sadly condinue to negatively impact King Wah. read more

Tue it's wing, fried rice, pork lo mein, sweet sour chicken, pepper steak & pineapple shrimp. Soup & egg roll come with. It's damn good egg roll & hot mustard combo. Love it. Pepper steak tastes like rose makes at home! I ate the entrees with their counterpart veggie today for first time & it sings. Pineapple with shrimp really adds a nice finish. It's a nice Chinese buffet & great people. Been here forever for a reason. $22 4 stars bc only my umi sushi gets 5. Bam King Wah delivers again. Been here 509 times w my folks when they lived here. I just recently moved back to northeast Ohio and have fond memories of this place, so I was sad to see some of the recent reviews. However, my family and I went last night and such a great meal. Two of us had the egg drop soup and it was as good as I remembered, and we all had soup dumplings and crab Rangoon, which was crispy and flavorful. For our entrees, we had the Szechuan eggplant, General Tso's chicken and shrimp in lobster sauce, but we were pretty full from the apps so we took quite a bit to go and enjoyed it later today, . The food was hot, fresh and exceeded our expectations. Our server, Alicia, was so nice and very attentive to our table. I'm looking forward to our next meal out at King Wah. read more

Someone said: the best Chinese place on the west side of Cleveland. So, I needed to check this restaurant. The place was clean and neat. The front lady was welcoming and gave us table in minutes. The menu was impressive: contained a lot of choices for any taste. I took sooo (unfortunately didn't take a pic of it) and eggplant with the rice. Honestly, I didn't expect that food would taste that good. The portion of my entree was massive and I was sure that I would have left overs... I didn't have bc I ate all!
