After having dinner, my gym buddy and I love coming to this place for snack. My friend loves getting the custard filled donuts while I wait for the fresh made donut holes. If the donut holes are not made yet, my alternatives are either getting their strawberry filled or chocolate donuts. Donuts here are fresh and yummy! They also have slices of cheesecake with different flavors to choose from. Friendly and helpful cashier who takes your order as well. Parking is limited so may have to park around the area. O M G! worth the wait of the line! This was the second to the last stop of our Berkeley food run. What a ridiculous but amazing way to experience this city. My fiancée got the original glazed donut and I got the maple bar filled with custard while my cousins got a bakers dozen. Because I was full I only took a bite of my fiancée's glazed donut and it was so delicious, it took all my might and full stomach to resist eating the whole thing lol. Their donut is stale and old this has to be one of the worst donuts I've ever had. I'm like ok I'll try one when I get home, I picked this place because they have really good reviews on Yelp! Late night donuts FTW! This is my favorite donut place to go to bar-none. This is my go-to place for donut holes. They are one of the few places in Berkeley that open early and close late (and by late, I mean past 2 a.m. late). The people working behind the counter are super nice, and most of the time, they'll slip you a few extra donuts or donut holes. I've never had a bad donut here, and even the day-old donuts don't seem day old. They're still fresh so props to them! There's never a wait here no matter how many people there are (seems like an oxymoron) because they're so fast with their service. I would highly recommend this place. For only a few bucks, you can get a dozen donut holes that will for sure get you through your next lecture... Trust me, it got me through a 3 hour sociology lecture at 7 p.m. =) read more

My King Pin (at least how I saw it, having personal access to their stuff all day/night long), back in the Unit 1 days (do they even still call it that?), Freeborn Hall #413... something I shall never forget.. just like my SID#. Those buttermilk bars kept me fiscally solvent at an impressionable age of 17, and also kept my LDL levels even higher, I'm afraid... no fear... i still had an extremely efficient system back then, and throw that grease at me.... these days, it's a sad, different tune... Eat a donut, walk it off with 2 miles... and throw some sweat in there too. But the glory days!!!!! How one place can aid/abet in re-opening a whole cascade of memories. I love donuts so much! Kingpin is a little pricey compared to the regular Cambodian-run donut shops I've been to in the past, but they do do a good job. Most of the donuts I've tried have been completely delicious. My favorites are old fashioned and the cake donuts. They're always moist and slightly crunchy on the outside (perfect!) with the perfect frosting and sprinkles. It's the BEST if you get here and they're cooking donuts too. The smell fills the street and beckons you inside. If they're ever making fresh donuts, don't be afraid to ask for one of the new ones. It's worth it! So, if I'm such a big fan, why not four stars? Two things that I don't like about it are the price and the buttermilk donuts. It's a little expensive. $1.50 for regular, plain donut is a little much. At home, the donuts I usually get range from about 40-60 cents a piece. It won't keep me away though, because where else will I get a yummy sweet treat at 1:30 am. Usually my favorite donut is the buttermilk. I can't get them here though because they're never cooked all the way through. On the outside, it's a perfect buttermilk donut, but because it's a denser donut, it's always doughy on the inside. It's like the oil isn't hot enough when they're cooked or something, but it's ALWAYS doughy in the middle and undercooked, which I definitely don't want in a donut. But alas, I return 1-2 times a week for that delicious post-study snack on my way to my apartment. Kingpin would have to do something truly heinous to lose my business. I do love them! They always hit the spot. It's good in the morning, good after drinking, good after studying, good for anything! Just beware of their buttermilk donuts. I hope they improve this issue sometime though. It'd be nice to order a fully cooked version of my favorite type of donut. I'll definitely still keep going back though. read more

And I have to say, there are few things as disgustingly tasty as a just-fried doughnut. Amazing cinnamon buttermilk. Got a random urge for a donut and decided to head to King Pin after reading the reviews. Def love me a trip to downtown Berkeley! Parking is always terrible to find a street spot or you can park in the garage, however we were only parked for 1hr and it cost us $4 to park. Went inside King Pin which is a small little shop. The guy immediately told us what was just freshly made and was honest when I asked when the apple fritters were made. So I opted for the fresh cinnamon buttermilk and the fresh donuts holes which were like mini buttermilks. Both were out of this world, still warm and sooooo just melted in my mouth!!! This is the only really decent donut place close to the UC Berkeley campus. It's also open until 3 am, which is a super plus for those late night munchies. They're donuts are perfectly crispy and not too sweet. I like to go here when I get a sweet tooth and crave my favorite donut, which is the twisted glaze with cinnamon. They're quite expensive, though. Each donut is priced around $3, which is a lot for 1 donut in my opinion. However, they do make up for that high price point in size. The donuts here are really large. I normally only eat half and then save the other half for later or share it with a friend. I've tried some of their other donuts like old fashioned with chocolate glaze and their chocolate and maple bars. All good things. I never really like old fashioned donuts but the ones here are really good. The service here is pretty good. I mean as good as a donut shop can be. I've gotten a free complimentary donut twice here before, so this place really loves their local and loyal customers. Considering that almost every culture has a donut equivalent (the berliner, biegnets, churros, malasadas, filhos, jam doughnuts, bunuelos, youtiao...) -- these are destined to be a delicious food! To satisfy my craving I ate 6 dozen not too fresh thick cake donut holes for $1.95. Or I guess I could have paid $2 for a bag old 3 day old full donuts. But fresh really does make a big difference, even if these ended up being just semi fresh. Very dense, filling, and hit the spot even though they were obviously mediocre quality.
