From the outside King Ed Pet Centre doesn't look like much. Once you walk inside ... wow! There are two levels for this store. The upper level is for pet supplies. The lower level is where the live fish are, both fresh and salt water fish. I was there for fish and fish supplies, but from what I can see, they have something for every type of pet. If you are looking for anything related to fish and aquariums and you don't want to run all over town - this is the store for you. The outside of the store is deceiving - it's HUGE inside. They have a cute, friendly cat that greets you upstairs when you come in. 90% of the products are upstairs - including fish items/food, aquariums, cat, dog and reptile items. The live fish are downstairs. It's quite the maze down there! I've bough all my fish from here and have had several friends and neighbours make purchases as well - all have had very happy, ongoing results. After a bad experience in the past with a staff member who gave me wrong advice that ended up killing my entire shrimp tank, I decided to come back here after a recommendation from a local aquarium hobbyist when I was looking for a new tank after one I bought from Petsmart was such bad quality that I had to return it. Decided to give them a second chance and when I told them what I was looking for, they took me into their "warehouse" area which was like a tank heaven. They carry the whole range of Aqueon tanks (and I'm sure they can order anything that isn't currently in stock) from little 2.5 gallons for bettas up to 300 gallon monster tanks. They even sell stands for 30 gallon breeders (36x18) which is hard to find at other stores. Staff can be a bit hit or miss when it comes to who you deal with, but the "big boss" around there is wonderful. His name is Ron, he's not grumpy at all, and knows everything about aquariums, so make sure you ask for him. The selection of live fish isn't looking too good at the moment and some of the tanks look like they've seen better days. Sad to see that bettas are still being kept in tiny unfiltered jars and cups which is not appropriate for them. Bettas look like they've seen better days too. read more

This pet store doesn't look like much on the outside, but inside it's enormous. I've driven past it many times and never gave it a second look. One day I went in with a friend to pick up cat food. The selection inside was impressive. King Ed Pet Centre has everything you'd need for your dog or cat and sell premium pet food at reasonable prices. Downstairs is a dizzying array of exotic fish and aquariums as well as aquatic plants. We spent at least 20 minutes marveling at all the different types of fish they were selling. i love this store ... it is the kind of store you can go in and spend a good amount of time browsing ... the plants i bought for my fish tank were healthy and green and have done really well in my tank ... it is the first fish store i have found that has healthy dwarf puffers with well fed bellies ... every other pet store i have seen them, their tummies are sunken which means they are not getting the right kind of food or they have parasites ... i bought five puffs at king ed and they are doing really well ... definitely worth leaving vancouver (and i really hate leaving vancouver :O) EDIT: months later all plants purchased thriving, as are my adorable dwarf puffers :O) read more

Used to have absolutely the best reptile room with variety, knowledge and healthy lizards!!! However I'm saddened to hear they are drastically downsizing it, an extremely bad idea in my opinion!!! We used to drive from Langley just to go and see the reptiles and buy pet supplies there, now that they're downsizing the reptile room that will obviously change! Ah, a pet store close to home that has everything I need. I do like their variety of fish. Though the last time I picked up some (very pricey) Rams, they all came home with a parasite. Without sending them to a quarantine tank when I took them home - they died within the first three weeks. In fact, most of the fish I get from King Eds don't last long. I've had fish in the same tank for years, but the fish from King Eds don't seem to like the change. They have a GREAT selection of aquatic plants! (my vice) and are well kept. They have a great selection of Africans and salt water varieties. If you're a fish hobbyist, this is the place to be! read more

A good all-around pet supply store, with a very good selection of well-priced dog & cat food & supplies, aquarium supplies & accessories, and friendly staff. I only purchase my aquarium livestock at Aquariums West, so I can't speak to that, but the supplies are well-stocked and well-priced. They also sell fish tank and settle and I've been tempted more than once by the really good sale prices. I have bought dog stuff there (when I lived nearby) and the food was always fresh and cheaper than most places (don't get me wrong - not "cheap" but a good price for super-premium dog kibble). I also scored three adorable matching raincoats for my dogs, which they still wear to save me some toweling-dry time, and if you know me, you know that I will spend whatever it takes to put healthy food into my dogs (and myself), but I refuse to pay any noticeable amount of money for clothing for my dogs ... They have fur ... And lots of it (just ask my groomer). But these coats were just so cute, and so reasonably priced, that I caved and bought them. No regrets! This is a good pet shop. Hamsters, mice, and rats. They got em all. At reasonable prices. I got a beautiful hairless rat from here. But he died. The hamster died also. The mice started to reproduce too quickly and I gave them back to the store. This is a happy place. read more

This store is packed, like in a squeeze through the aisles kind of way. That said it is super organized and the staff are all friendly and super knowledgable :) this trip was only for my aquarium tanks so I only pawed though that sections sale bins bit great pricing and variety for tank decorations, I will definitely forgo big box pet smarts decor aisle from now on! They have a lot of things for all manner of pets, I'll keep my eye out for things for my doggies as well. The aquarium section downstairs had a lot of fish variety, but I was on the hunt for shrimp. The betta here are very beautiful and obviously better cared for than at the big stores. A fun section to wander through even if you don't have a tank yourself :) read more

This place helped me cycle my tank because my nitrites were being so elusive. They immediately recommended the Marineland Bio-Spira, which I have heard of but none of my usual aquarium stores had. After about a week, I am so thankful I went to that store because not only did they know what they were talking about, they helped me get back into the process of cycling my tank. That's quality work that I rarely see in aquarium stores in BC. Next, their products are amazing. Their prices are competitive and it's not wonder they have been in the business for 41 years. Their products I found tend to be cheaper than than some of the places. Their downstairs area made me want to cry because of the amount of fishes they have (Black Orandas are pretty rare and many more). I absolutely will come back here again. OH and their plants. I got my Cabombas, 5-7 in a bunch, for about 2.99. They were the best Cabombas I have ever seen. Lush green and all healthy. At places like petsmart, they're sold for 7.99 per pot or 5.99 for the plant. They're usually wilting or close to dying at this point. This should give you an idea of what kind of a store this is. It's not like petsmart where the quality is severely lacking. It's a quality store that doesn't sell things overpriced. It's a gem and I will absolutely come back again. read more

You know what? I used to like this store because it had a ton of stuff to browse and I was also under the impression that the prices were reasonable (like other reviewers). However, a few things happened, 1. An invention called the internets which granted us all the ability to look up prices elsewhere - typically King Ed's prices (keep in mind, I mainly shop for aquarium & fish supplies) are 10 - 50% higher than other stores for equivalent items. I don't know if the prices have increased in the last year, but, simply put, they are ripping you off. J&L Aquatics has significantly better prices and you can shop online. This said, I still prefer to buy stuff in the states for true savings. 2. The ton of stuff ends up being a bunch of clutter, I hate going in this place because it has too much crap, it's dusty, the fish area feels like, and smells like a swamp. FYI - this place is not stroller friendly. :) I didn't give this place 1 star because I love their fish selection. It's still an adventure to see what surprises are lurking in the tanks. BUT again, these are way overpriced, similar to Big Al's (or the Island Kitty Adventure place, whatever it's called today), BUT, yes, another but, you can sometimes barter, which can be entertaining. read more

I have been coming here for my aquarium stuff for over 10 years. First, the good things - the prices are competitive, the fish stock is quite varied and they have a lot of equipment. The bad things are that the fish are not always the highest quality, they lack equipment for the planted tank enthusiast like me and the place could be more organized / clean. With big Al's stores gone in Richmond and coquitlam; as well as Pet Habitat's future unknown, I am sure a lot more people will flock here. First time here a couple of weekends ago. This is one place that has a solid culture and genuine good feel. It's not a shiny polished store chain like petsmart but it's my very disgust for petsmart that has led me to branch out and look at privately owned pet supermarkets and shops. The one thing you'll first notice when you step in...IT IS CRAMMED. I mean this place is bursting at the seams and you could spend well over an hour just poking around on the top floor where the cashier is. I spent a good 2 hours there looking at the guinea pig and rabbit kibble, looking at the noisy birds, tons of cat and dog food. I ended up buying a bag of guinea pig food and a bag of rabbit food (both brands they really like). I wouldn't say it's necessarily 'cheaper' or better priced. It's fairly priced and similar to every other pet store I've been to, maybe a difference in a dollar or so which is hardly anything. It's very much a family atmosphere where even the grandmother and grandfather are busy about the place and always smile and make you feel welcome. The aquatics section in the cave below is spellbinding. Felt a bit sad for the great large fish I saw in one tank. Maybe a grouper but I don't know anything about fish. It seemed like it belonged in a much bigger place and could hardly turn in the tank. The small animals are through a tiny door hidden away in another portion of the shop so you might have to ask a couple of staff if you get lost. I certainly did and went out some other exit door. Two young staff were busy about when I poked my head in and they were very friendly and chatty. They asked if I would like to hold any of the animals or meet any of them. With my 2 bags of feed I left and wouldn't mind returning/visiting again. Definitely well worth the exploration to avoid the other large name brand stores. read more

Stopped in to look at the tropical fish with family and while browsing was told to move out of the aisle by a store employee who stated "this area is for customers". They also have a large selection of cat and dog food which is priced better than even the big box stores. Went to buy a marine fish and pick up some supplies; most of their tanks were empty or nearly empty. They did not have what I was looking for, or much of anything. Having struck out trying to buy the fish I was looking for I tried to purchase a magnesium supplement for my reef tank and was told in a very stern tone of voice by the lady at the cashier that, in the future, I was not to bring that item into the fish area. That will not be a problem because, in the future I will not be going back to their store-lol. I thanked her for the heads up and promptly left the item on the counter and walked out. Staff outnumbered customers 4 to 1 when I was there-I think they are just trying to get rid of all of their customers. read more

This is the most horrendous pet store I have ever stepped foot into. There is nothing appealing about shopping here - the place is filthy, the animals are treated with no respect or care, and the staff are rude, dishonest and unhelpful. Also, their return policy sucks. I can recall an incident where I had wanted to inquire about getting some fish for my aquarium. I approached a stocky looking, older man and asked if he could help me out. I brought up a few questions regarding species compatibility, and the employee, who I assume was the department manager, quickly dismissed my inquiry and suggested I should buy more than my tank would allow, in the attempt to milk more money out of me. I spent a few minutes deciding on the fish I wanted, as many appeared ill and I wanted to pick healthier looking ones for the amount I was paying. There were no other customers in the area, but despite that, the fellow rudely showed his impatience as I attempted to pick through the diseased fish. As he handed me my fish, he commented on how picky I was, and that he had never met anyone else as picky as I... I couldn't believe my ears. I spent a total of 5 minutes in the department, and the man had the audacity to make such arrogant remarks on my character. I did not respond to his insult, but nonetheless, felt incredibly disrespected by his overall hostile and judgemental attitude toward me. The most disturbing thing about the store is that no one who works there appear to care about the well-being of the animals; all are housed in very unkempt quarters. It baffles me how these guys are able to operate based on such inhumane practices. Disgusting on every level. read more

My rating is exclusively based on the living conditions of the birds (budgies and zebra finches). They have three bird cages stacked on top of each other. The only light source is from the ceiling. So the poor budgies housed in the middle of the stack are barely exposed to any light! Budgies need 12 hours of light per day! Without the proper amount of light exposure, they can develop a variety of health issues! Also, there was a very rusty bell toy in the cage.. The only plus side is that this store has violet colored budgies. Very pretty! read more

None of the animals are being used as slaves. No electrisity is being generated by the rat exersize wheels. All of the animals are paid in free food and shelter with limited medicle benefits. But by law, they are not permitted to run free unless customers buy them paying the ransom and taxes. This is how the world is run. Except for the human employees; they get paid (if they do as the masters tell them ) and by law are not permitted to get free shelter at the pet store. But the store pays them well enough that they can afford to rent their own apartment cage and don't have to eat the doggie cookies. lal read more

There were kittens behind a glass closet, there were different species of reptiles in the same tanks, which anyone working in pet care should know should not be done and the fish tanks were dirty. The store was so packed and there are no windows. I went in there for dog food, but there was no way I was going to spend money there. read more

This shop is one of the best i've come across in the city. Their stock on aquarium equipment exceeds decent and they can often find you replacement parts at a fair price saving you from dealing with the companies directly. They also take in used equipment from people leaving the hobby to resell at a fair price. For Fresh water plants they have a decent selection that often varies, giving many hobbyists a reason to keep stopping by. Their show tanks are very impressive and highlight the knowledge of the store owners and have earned the respect of many of their enthusiast patrons. Livestock, they are stocked well in most cases, just phone before going since they have a high turn over. I lost a couple fish on a purchase and just mentioning it the next time got me 4 free fishies no questions asked. Their official return policy on fish is well stated, and they require a water sample so they can tell you if its something you can fix to prevent further losses. What earned them 4 stars instead of 5 is two things. One being customer service, they are just too busy and its very hard to get someone to fetch you plants or livestock downstairs, but their tank displays atleast give you something to watch while you wait. The second thing is the advice can be a bit dated they give you, they have little knowledge of EI dosing regimes and other topics that have become common knowledge for several years now. Take into account though that i've not been to any other shop that has topped their advice, they are still ahead of the others ;) read more

Price for the dog food is a few bucks cheaper compare to the chain store. Staff is somewhat helpful. Have a good selection of fish, but well overpriced. I took a suggestion and bought a pair Bacardi cichlid which costs 15 dollars a piece. I didn't wanna buy 2 at the time but the guy says u have to buy at least 2 otherwise they would die. I later find out it is a totally false statement. I also find the same type of fish else where for 5 dollars each. It is NOT the right way to do business. Ask "CAREFULLY" on the 3 days guarantee and mark down the water parameters for the guarantee. Match your tank parameters with theirs before making any purchase from them, otherwise the guarantee are invalid. If you have a quarantine tank, it may work for you. However, I only have one tank and I run my tank with different water parameters since I keep some fishes that King Eds don't have. After multiple fatalities with King Ed's fishes with void guarantee, I just decide not to buy from them. Maybe one day I might return to them when I have a quarantine tank setup. But then again, the staffs talk down to their customers, that makes me very uncomfortable. read more

I usually get my crickets here. Pros - Lots of different reptiles and amphibians to view as a potential pet and friend. - Good prices for tanks and terrariums. Cons - They are more on making a sale rather than the actual care of the animals. They have baby Veiled Chameleons that look miserable and stressed due to improper housing and there is no dripper for the poor things to drink from! I complained to one of the associates and simply brushed it off by the fact that the chameleons will get cold if they were put in the proper housing... Bottom line is, if you can't take care of the animal properly, then why did you purchase it? - There seems to be a lack of knowledge about the animals. I went there a couple of times asking questions and I found that the person I asked was not confident in their answers... Not very assuring. read more

this place is good for products and fish food, however everytime I want to buy fish from downstairs I get bad service and bad quality fish with no choice. all the times I went they never let me choose the fish I want and they just grab me whichever they can. I wanted some male looking rainbow fish that look slightly brighter in color and he says all female and grabs me the dull color ones, I wanted a male gourami he says they are all female and doesn't let me pick the one that looks like he is male. few other fish I bought from them either got sick or died , some grew weird things on its side. This coming from a already established community aquarium that already had the same type of fish in there with no problems prior to getting fish at king eds because I wanted bigger schools. read more

Crowded, unorganized, smells really bad, uneducated staff, many things are old, they sell kittens from mills. I came here and could barely walk around the store its cluttered, things all over the place, things on the ground blocking the isles. They carry everything from generic garbage brands, and new have had pet curean brand of food pulled from the shelves. I wont come back here! read more
