Worst ramen I've ever had. Tonkutsu soup is very bland, it's like dipping noodle in hot water, egg is broken, I just couldn't finish eating it, instant noodle is better than this. The grilled pepper is raw too..And half an hour waiting just for this kind of food, feeling sad. read more

Came here for my birthday (6/11/20) looking to try my favorite comfort food dish from Japan, Katsudon. Unfortunately it was very apparent in the disparaging difference between authentic and an influenced dish. The cutlet was quite thin, breading a bit too thick and the balance of the sauce was very acidic. This alone would've made made for a sub par meal, but in addition the bottom half of the cutlet was overcooked/burned. I mentioned it to the waitress and was very appreciative of the offer to replace it with a new one. I declined because I didn't really want to wait again, and I'd already gotten a decent fill on the gyoza which were on the contrary very good! Though bitter and acidic it wasn't completely inedible, I wouldn't come here for the donburi but maybe you'll have more luck than me with some of their other dishes! :) read more

Food looks and smells great. The place is nice. But we happened to sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen and this kitchen and cooks were disgusting. We ordered our food and sat and watched the cooks send out order's. In five minutes I saw the cooks use dirty dishes over again, cook gyoza with his hands on the nastiest griddle Ive ever seen right after pushing the garbage down with his hands and not wash them. All while the cook preparing the ramen was using a disgusting towel to wipe everything down from spilling soup broth all over everything on the counter. It looked like he had the same latex glove on his hand all night. He even took it off just to put it back on again. At least he had a hair net on. read more

My dining experience was bittersweet. The drink (Ginger Geisha) and the side items (grilled bok choy and cucumber sunomono) were excellent....as was the customer service at the bar. However, what I did not appreciate was the response to my complaint. I had the Katsudon, which had a good flavor, yet the egg (white and yolk) was uncooked. I explained that I was ok with the yolk, but the uncooked egg white made me uncomfortable because I know the potential risk for sickness if eaten. After stating my concerns to the waitress twice, the manager came and "explained" how eggs are cooked in Japan (I in turn made him aware that I have been to Japan, as well as had the cuisine). He gave me a slight apology and $5 discount on my dish. So A- on the food, D on the customer service and overall satisfaction (generally nice but unaccommodating). read more

Decided to try this place out spontaneously. The staff members here are very nice. They have a really laid back type atmosphere. The waitress recommended some appetizers. It was some chili thing and that was a unique taste. We didn't like the taste at first but we grew to really enjoy it. After than we got the ramen which all came out well and tasted good. I ordered their house made ginger soda which was amazing as well. Overall this place was a good experience and I would come back again. read more

My husband and I went in for lunch today - as always, the food was amazing, and the service was perfect. My husband always gets the ramen with pork shoulder, and I got yakisoba with chicken- both dishes are sublime -great flavors, perfect portions, its heaven in a bowl. Samantha was an awesome server, very friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. She took great care of us, and the rest of the staff were wonderful as well. Kimura is one of our favorite "date spots" - we will be back soon!! read more

Number one any business downtown if they don't have their own parking sucks. So you can add 7 dollars to whatever you buy for parking. And since they cant be bothered to post there hours. I spent 7 bucks on parking which 2 hours was the only choice I could take since I didn't want to pay for more time. I get to the restaurant at 2:02 PM Saturday afternoon just so I can greet a locked door. there was someone at the counter that tells me "Oh sorry we open from 5 pm to 10 pm on Saturdays and 11 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday. So come back in three hours when the parking would be ridiculous? No... I think not I will go to a restaurant that wants to do business. Why do people write bad reviews? Well maybe because the're all true? just a thought. So I would not know how the food is since they can't be bother to be open as most food establishments are. They are there to serve people not just themselves. Poor experience. I will never "ever" go again. Lets see what they build there next cause that place wont be open long with hours like that. thats to bad the potential was there but they choose to "not" capitalize on it.. read more

Nice place for ramen. A little pricy, but the service was good. Would definitely return when downtown.

First time eating here and it was so incredibly good. Our server was Adrienne she was really nice and knew all the answers to our questions and was able to explain everything so that we knew what we were getting. We started with onigiri which I had always wanted to try and wow I was not disappointed at all the seasons they put on them were perfect and the inside was fish I forgot what kind but it was delicious. I got shoyu which is a chicken ramen it comes w fish cakes which were very cute and very good it's like imitation fish. Sea weed half a boiled egg, green onions, bean sprouts, shiitake mushrooms. You could also add an assorted amount of things to your ramen I added tofu the tofu was seasoned and fried really well the flavor was sort of lemony which balanced well. They also have ramune they offer 4 flavors I got the strawberry one. We finished with a matcha ice cream which wasn't sweet but for matcha that's a good thing! It was great I would get again. I wish they still had the red bean ice cream tho. I posted a video on my TikTok if u want to check out the food it's emiiikattt thank you kimura and thank you Adrienne for being amazing !! Also the music was great definitely passed the vibe check read more

Great food but horrible customer service from the front of house staff to the managers. I've been to this restaurant 4 times because of how much I love the food, but the staff is extremely non professional and almost rude read more

When my husband and I moved to the SA area, we were super excited to try all the ramen places since ramen is practically our favorite thing! We went to Kimura with high hopes since it was the top rated ramen shop in the city and were let down. Everything was kinda bland and we weren't overly impressed. The only thing I truly enjoyed was the gyoza and the sauce that came with it was so so good but otherwise everything was a let down. Maybe we expected too much but I suggest heading elsewhere if you're in need of a ramen fix! read more

For the reasons below, my advice to the owner: close down and focus on Gwendolyn before that one suffers in the same ways as this failed attempt. Some background: I was really looking forward to this restaurant - especially after eating at their restaurant next door. I was so disappointed, I wish I had left my experience with the chef and owner on a good note! First off - the wait staff was not at all knowledgeable about the food on the menu. The menu is only one page long and has Japanese words throughout - so one would assume that the wait staff would be well prepared to answer common questions that ask to interpret the Japanese words. They weren't. Its one thing for the wait staff to not know the answers, but its even worse when the wait staff felt no need to check with the chef to get the real answers despite not knowing AND proceeded to answer questions nonetheless. Neither of us who had the ramen felt like it was anything special. The noodles were sub-par and on the aldente side (which is not typically of ramen like it is in italian food). The broth wasn't particularly spicy or flavorful either and their selection was very limited. Even worse, TWO of the FOUR ramen dishes were unavailable. What is going on! Worse still, BOTH orders were wrong. One of us ordered the shoyu ramen which came with no meat at all and came with miso broth- we asked the wait staff and she confirmed that the order was correct. Later I asked to speak with one of the heads of the restaurant who apologized and truthfully told us that the order was wrong. I am allergic to seafood - and asked the wait staff if the two appetizers on the menu had any fish sauce or shrimp paste. The waitress replied back "I think it doesn't". I politely asked her to confirm with the chef. When she came back, sure enough, one of the dishes had fish sauce in them. To make matters WORSE - my ramen bowl had a fish cake in it which is not listed on the menu (and despite us having a conversation about not eating seafood!). I get that this restaurant is new and probably has new wait staff. However, given the closures after the first few days (due to a lack of food), and the announcements on their facebook that they will be closed due to repairs to their AC, I was still willing to give them a shot. However, I really wish I hadn't because the service was horrible, the food was mediocre, and half the menu was not available. As I mentioned above, my advice to the owner: close down and focus on Gwendolyn before that one suffers in the same ways read more

Dear lord, I'm going to have to drop down the rating quite a bit, because our service last night was absolutely horrendous. To get down to the point, our waitress SUCKED. I remember her from when she worked at Hot Joy, and she was the only one that I specifically remember not liking because a lot of what she did to us last night was characteristic of things she did at Hot Joy. She failed at the most basic things. When our ramen was finally served, my fiance didn't have a spoon at his plate, so he asked for a spoon. She disappeared, we assumed to go get it, and saw her go behind the bar to start filling water jugs and do other things. When she finished, she checked on 2 other tables, disappeared again, and didn't come back out until she had something to give the other tables. At that point, we realized she had forgotten, so my fiance waved at her with my spoon as a reminder across the room. She finally retrieved it, apologized, and disappeared again. At this point, our water jug was empty, and we waited for her to come check on our table or refill it. Didn't happen. My fiance finally got mad (he's a very calm fellow) and walked up to the bar to have our jug refilled. She still didn't come to check on anything. Cleaned the table next to us and didn't ask if we needed anything else. She does the avoidance thing when she senses an upset table instead of handling it, which is even more upsetting. She took forever to get the bill, took almost 20 minutes to bring back the change, and in the end, a dinner that usually takes us maybe 45 minutes from arrival to paying, took an HOUR and 45. This place is a hole in the wall, mind you. They have no more than 10 tables total and 3 waitresses were working last night, so I don't know what the deal is with this particular waitress. She has never been rude, but for the love of God girl, PAY ATTENTION!!! I recall leaving her a note once at Hot Joy explaining why she was not getting a good tip then--she had also failed at that time to bring utensils (I got up and grabbed them myself from the cart that holds them) and never returned to take my drink order after I had to flag her down for a drink menu. The food here at Kimura is amazing, so I regret that we won't be in a hurry to be back for fear that we may be stuck with her serving us again. I don't think she's cut out to do serving. Maybe we'll just sit at the bar next time. read more

Dumplings are great. The chicken skewers were good as well. Came during happy hour so we tried these apps that were happy hour price. Ramen was not the best I have had. It was alright and pretty salty. Definitely have had better ramen than this, noodles weren't great either. We did have great service read more

over priced doesn't even begin to explain this place. first $12 for a cocktail no $15 for noodles i almost spit out my $12 cocktail when i saw that they ran out of food... (this was not opening weekend) the service was fine but i sat at the bar. now the food, I didn't order much because of price and them not having it. the food was maybe a 6 out of 10. was very hard to get past the price. also i was on my second $12+ cocktail. so take that into account this is a very hipster place, which from my experience means over price for sub par food. with crap service. he runs it just like the other place poorly read more

Out of the ramen shops I have tried in San Antonio this is the better of them. It's not the best I've had but like I said, for San Antonio it's good. It's a quaint restaurant. This is definitely not the place to have a large gathering. It also definitely is not for children. They don't have a children's menu and their portion sizes on appetizers are small for the price they sell them for. If you are looking for a date night place then yes this could be small and romantic. However, where it is located (across from the greyhound station) is a horrible area and shouldn't be trusted at night. There is no close parking unless you are staying at a hotel so I definitely recommend Uber or lyft to avoid the price of downtown parking and so you can have a few drinks and get home safely. read more

Given how difficulty it is to find decent ramen place in Texas and how I'm chronically craving for authentic ramen everywhere I visit, I was totally thrilled when I heard about Kimura. It's located conveniently in downtown/riverwalk and is actually pretty spacious and nice compared to regular Ramen places (well of course it might still be considered tiny by Texan standard but at least you don't need to worry about getting stabbed by random chopsticks while your neighbors are having too much fun with their ramen). As a loft/bar combined with open ramen kitchen, the overall the environment is nice and modern during a weekday evening and I didn't have to wait to get seated. They seem to change the menu daily/weekly like Restaurant Gwendolyn. The menu appears to be pretty friendly to the public and the selections are simple. Although it's obviously overpriced, given the scarcity of semi-fancy Japanese place around here it's probably doing you a favor by making the queue shorter anyway (I won't suggest waiting for more than 20mins in this weather). The appetizers seems to be pretty fusionized. I got octopus salad with miso sauce. The sauce was delicate but the octopus was a little bit overcooked for me . Haven't tried the raw menu yet so can't comment on how fresh the seafood is. I got the old fashioned Shoyu Ramen with extra pork. The ramen noodle, shoyu chicken broth and soft-boiled egg are within expectation...pretty decent and on the track towards authenticity but not particularly spectacular..just enough to quench the thirst for a good bowl of ramen when you are starving. The extra pork tho was quite a disappointment but hey at least I found a shoyu ramen in SA that's way better than the disastrous one from the Grranary...will revisit if there's no line. Overall a decent attempt for authentic ramen and interesting place for late night bar comfort food and yes gotta pay for the scarcity. read more

Looks sure are deceiving at this small ramen shop. Between my bf and I, we ordered the shoyu ramen, gyoza, and miso soup. Shoyu ramen looked delicious..... But tasted disgusting. Fortunately for me I wasn't hungry so my meal was the miso soup with gyoza but I don't know how he forced himself to finish the bowl of blah. On the other hand, the gyoza looked so unappetizing, but it was actually decent. And last but not least, I give it one star because the miso soup actually tasted like miso soup. But who messes up on miso soup anyways? I plan on going again. Said no one ever. Super overpriced. If you want ramen, stay at home and eat packaged. Tastes so much better. read more

Do not come here... Do not come here if you you have a small or a big party. Don't come here expecting good food. do not come here for service. i think you get the idea. Do come here for tourist trap with a capital "T". That is my short version for people who don't want to read below. if you want to experience what I experienced continue to reading...:) I made a reservation for 8. We showed up and they seated us and then forgot about us. after we flagged a waiter down then he came to take our orders. So he took our drink orders and then our food orders. From the group's first impression of the place is, we all agreed that we were not going to get fed (meaning we expect the portion is going to be smaller than normal) and probably will be paying higher price then usual. So we kept that in mind. We have not eaten the whole day so we were hungry and tired because it was a twenty minute walk from the convention center. Its one of the few ramen places we found on yelp in the area. so we gave it a shot. My husband and I ordered two rice bowls and a ramen for backup in case the rice was not enough for each of us. all the guys order ramen with extra noodle and meat. The girls in the group just order normal portion ramen. everyone got a drink of either soda or beer. 20 minutes after we ordered, we were still waiting for our food. I noticed other customers are already served arriving after us. So we continue to wait since we have a larger party. All of a sudden the waiter showed up counting our heads and then asking all of us what we ordered again. We sensed that they were having trouble with our orders but we let them sort it out. Our food came and oh boy! the group thought we ordered kids meal. our rice was shaped of a small dome made from a small rice bowl that you normally eat at a sit down chinese restuarant, with 3 pieces of sliced pork, (remember it cost $14, avg $4.65/piece of pork). There was no sauce, no veggie, nothing, just rice, and 3 pieces of sliced of pork. my chicken bowl was slightly better! I had eggs! with my chicken! but when I flipped up my small portion of dried chicken and eggs, I saw my sorry rice dome staring back at me. :( The most ridiculous sight was that they served that small rice dome in a ramen bowl! i can't believe it! I had to imagine that there was more food in the bowl. Imaginary food is no good for hungry me! i finished my rice bowl in five bites! my normal portion ramen was a joke, but I am not laughing. Another kids meal. i didn't dare to take more than two mouthful of noodle, there wasn't much left for my husband to share. I finally turned to my friends and announced that I was still hungry but I refuse to spend any more money on this place. I was going to get bar food after we leave.. I guess I shouldn't complain, at least i got my kids meal. one of my friend had no food in front of her. so we thought it was coming. so after I polish off kids meals, her food was no where in sight, and the waiter didn't even bother to check on her. so we flagged down the waiter and brought it to his attention that one person is not getting food. he said he will check and make sure to bring her food. another twenty minutes passed, still no food. then we are flagged down someone who appears to be the manager or owner. and brought it to his attention. he said its coming, its going to be another 10 minutes!....so my friend waited over an hour for a bowl of ramen. I was so tired of waiting for my friends food to show up, I took a picture of my empty bowl and my friend's bare space in front of her for memory. :/ she was not happy for sure. A couple of the guys was mumbling about the ramen they served was different than the traditional "ramen" noodle. finally, the bill, yeah!!! i had to pick up my eyes balls that popped out of my eye sockets. Our bill was around $220. average $27/per person. I briefly glanced over the bill and guess what I saw on my bill? 20% gratuity fee! for what?! we were there for two hours and not once did the waiter refilled our water! waited over an hour for ramen. Who charges 20% service fee for serving ramen and dons? I need to check with Gordon Ramsey. the portions here for ramen and dons are similar to Japanese restaurants that offer ramen combo that comes with side of small rice bowl. this place is serving that kind of side portion of small rice bowl but not as good. you might get better food with those combos then you get here. think of tapas portion, but entree price. this establishment is purely for profit. they don't care about the food they serve and they don't care about the customers that walk through that door. I really felt "raped", for a lack of better term. There was no apology or acknowledgement of missed service regarding my friend's missed order. They were just happy to take the money when they collected the bill. Overall I guess they don't care for repeat business. Fine by me. read more

In reading some of these reviews I can't help but wonder if some people go into a restaurant for the sole purpose of poo pooing all over it to make themselves feel like real food critics... I finally got to eat there Friday night and was quite impressed with the service considering 1. it's Friday night and they were packed and 2. the place is so new that the staff is still finding their groove. Everything I ate was amazing- the prices were to be expected for quality ingredients at a downtown establishment and the presentation made me feel like I was on the Food Network or something. From out of town and this was the worst service I've ever had. There were groups that were being seated before us. The servers kept telling us that they can get drinks started while we waited. They told us that twice and still had to be reminded of we could get a drink menu. When we were able to be seated there was hardly any wipe down of the table. Tables were wet and they didn't have any glassware for water so they gave us plastic cups. They poured our water for us but the spilling made the tables. When we finally ordered, we got our appetizers in a decent amount of time however, when the male waiter snapped at us. He asked who ordered the pork dumplings and when we replied that we ordered Gyoza he said "that's what a gyoza is. It's the same thing". We couldn't tell if the wait staff was drunk or high but they were awful. We had our own drinks, soy sauce, and water literally spill on us. When they spilled stuff on us they left us to clean it up, no sorry, no "hold on let me get a rag". Unacceptable. When we got our bowls of ramen they were decent. There's nothing special other than the awful waiters. Do I recommend this place? Absolutely not. Was the food worth the close to hour wait? Absolutely not. Kimura is a cute little place that makes you feel like you're in New York. The place gets really crowded during lunchtime so if you don't want to wait 20 minutes for a table try to get there around 11:00. I didn't mind the wait and we sat at the bar. I order the shoyu ramen with pork and it was delicious! A good portion too so I took some to go and they pack the noodles in a separate container so they retain that texture when you heat everything up at home. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it's such a small place and they're cooking right in front of you so your clothes smell like grease for the rest of the day. I think that's just the concept which is fine but I won't go there if I have a meeting after lunch or have plans after work. read more

Sooo good! Didn't care for the flavor of the miso broth, but the food is absolutely amazing!
