Had a girls dinner on a chilly afternoon! Besides a bit of a wait we were excited to try this spot. The ramen was delicious, warm, and reasonably priced. Our server was very attentive, they even lowered the volume of the music since we felt like we were yelling a bit so that was a nice touch. Only downside was the serving size of the edamame appetizer it was barley enough for two people so we had to order two of them to serve the three of us. I would definitely return! After learning that Kimura moved from their downtown location to N. Flores, I wasn't sure if the quality would be the same but to my relief, it was how I remembered! The Tantanmen ramen was so flavorful and the noodles were cooked al dente which I really liked. The spicy pork was on the salter side but I would recommend regardless. It was my first time not knowing how the restaurant worked I asked a worker if I can just sit anywhere and he told me that it's self service. Meaning you order your food at the front when you first walk in and they give you a number when the food is ready they will bring it to you. Behind the register in the front is a little station that has all the utensils, water and extra dishes. I thought this was different but also kind of cool. I read the sign that all tops get distributed evenly which is cool I just hope everyone gets enough because the cooks are working hard moving around and just making the food you can see how much enthusiasm they put into making sure the food is 100%. So my ramen did take at least 20 minutes or more to come out which it was kind of a long wait but the ramen was worth the wait. I think the place is hip and it's cool how they have an upstairs bar and just a big restaurant with nice esthetic wood and black metal. The bathroom was clean and is one stall. So enough of my first impression of the place. The soup was amazing! I wish I could have finished it but I took it home and finished it later that night. The mushrooms were so good and chewy and the flavor is all there. I have to say I am impressed! I loved it and I will be returning! The spicy paste is super spicy so I would go light and then add more since I accidentally made my broth a little spicier than I wanted but oh well! I have to say I was happy when my food came out but I wanted extra green onions so j was waiting in line when Gabby noticed me, she asked me if I needed anything since my food was ready and I said yes I needed extra green onions. I ordered the gyoza and the Tonkotsu ramen with pork belly. The gyoza looked different from your usual dumplings, almost like they were flattened. They fell apart kind of easily, but were juicy and tasty. The ramen had a very rich broth, but felt lighter than I expected. I don't know why, but the broth was also a cloudy consistency. The toppings complimented the ramen really well and were arranged uniformly around the bowl - the soft boiled egg was cooked perfectly, the nori sheets added a salty flavor, the cilantro teased the senses, and the mushrooms burst with flavor. The bean sprouts were a little bland, but had a solid crunch to them. The pork belly was delicious, but could have used slightly more meat than fat. Overall, I was impressed by the ramen! To drink, I ordered the Fuki spritzer which the waitress recommended as one of their sweeter cocktails. It wasn't as sweet as I would have liked it and it tasted a little bit like medicine, but I enjoyed the bubbles and plum wine flavor. The restaurant itself is located at the corner of a street and feels almost like an escape because of its dimmer lighting and fake bamboo that cover the windows. My friend and I were seated in the corner right by the bar on really tall chairs. In the middle of the restaurant, there is an area where some chefs can be seen cooking. The part of this restaurant that I enjoyed the most was the service! Our waitress was friendly and soft spoken and gave some good recommendations when I asked her for some. First Impression: Walking in here, I immediately felt a grin come across my face as the character and charm of the place enveloped me. The decor was fitting, the place was cozy and seating was limited which makes you feel priveliged. The place smelled amazing and immediately I felt my stomach growl with impatience. Food: I was seated promptly and our waitress explained the menu and allowed me to sample all 3 broths which was nice. Me and my co-worker both agreed the Miso broth was our favorite full of complex flavors while maintaining a clean finish. I got the Miso bowl with pork belly and it was divine. The noodles soaked up the flavor from the broth and were much better than any other ones I've ever had. The pork belly was delicate and ripped apart with the slightest touch of my chopsticks. The flavor was true to the natural pork flavor with a few extra spices to compliment the miso broth. Service: From the moment walking in to leaving, service was great. It took 1 minute to get seated, menu items were explained well, samples of the boths were given, and we got our check quickly when asked. All in all, no service issues whatsoever. Final Thoughts: This is the best ramen I've ever had but it should be noted that ramen is not really something I seek out very often. That being said, this will surely be my go-to spot moving forward. If you plan on coming solo, try to sit by the cooking station and if you're coming on a date, make a reservation for sure. Authentic ramen in San Antonio, Texas? That sounds too good to be true. Well, it turns out to be the case here. The closest legit ramen I could find is at Ramen Tatsu-ya in Austin. Before they opened their door, I had to fly to SF, LA and NYC for a bowl of authentic ramen. When I heard there was going to be a Japanese ramen place opening in town, I almost couldn't believe myself. Is San Antonio really going international? Ramen Kimura had quite a hectic opening week. So I waited until the second week to visit. I came on a Friday night a few minutes before 5:30pm to avoid a long line. I still remember waiting for 1.5 hours at Ramen Tatsu-ya. To my surprise, there wasn't a line. My friend and I were seated quickly. I really like the interior of this small restaurant. It is very contemporary and hip. We ordered gyoza to share. It was $6 for 4 pieces. The taste was OK. It is obviously overpriced for both the quality and quantity. I ordered the pork bone broth ramen called tonkotsu. I have to say the noodles were decent but the broth and toppings were way off. The egg is not half marinated egg but a soft boiled full egg. I've never seen that in a real bowl of ramen. The chashu pork is OK but I wouldn't call it authentic either. The broth is not milky but weak and bland. I had to add soy sauce to it which didn't seem right at all. The price is on the higher side. I mean ramen isn't supposed to be a pricey and upscale food. And no, I am NOT talking about the instant ramen you know about. A bowl of high quality ramen at Tatsu-ya is around $8.5-$9. Here it is $12 for a bowl of subpar noodles. The toppings are ridiculously priced too. Extra $1 for green onions? Hello? In Asia, Pizza Hut is a fancy restaurant that sells French snails. People dress up to eat pizza with knife and fork. Sounds unbelievable, I know! We eat pizza with our hands here. But we also eat subpar ramen at an upscale downtown loft and pay big bucks to sweat our butt off. No, thank you. Without a doubt, I will still be driving to Austin for ramen. And I am already thankful it is within driving distance! San Antonio has a long way to go before it can be called a world class city. It probably will never be. This bowl of ramen speaks for itself. I choose this place almost every time it's my turn to decide date night & love bringing my friends here. -I have ordered the edamame, gyoza, Tonkotsu Ramen, and orange soda and have zero complaints about the food. I also like to add a little bit of the house spice to my ramen as well. Even when it is take-out it's still delicious and there's always left over broth. Was here for Thursday dinner around 6pm. The place was small but there was a table for two available. It was a happy hour(4-7pm), so appetizers were 1/2 off. We ordered grilled bok choy, shishito pepper and pickle sampler and draft sapporo yo start our dinner. Bok choy was little salty, had to ask our waitress for my beer. The shishito pepper never came out. Had to ask another waiter to bring out pickles when our main dish, tantan miso ramen and yakisoba came out. I asked my ramen to be less salty when I ordered, but it was so salty I couldn't barely had any sip of the broth. Yakisoba also had too much of a sauce that my husband had a stomach ache afterwards. I'm very torn between 3 and 4 stars but I feel that this place is deserving of the 4 for a few reasons. First off, the service was great. The server was able to answer all of my questions and even answered them in depth. This is a big deal. Who doesn't want their server to be knowledgeable about the food they're about to eat? We started off with the shishito peppers and bok choy apps. They were both delicious! The sauce that comes with the bok choy is legit. A perfect blend of soy sauce and sesame oil and something else I couldn't quite pinpoint. Very yummy! I ordered the shoyu ramen. This is where I lean more toward 3 stars. The noodles were a good density. The black mushrooms were miniature flavor explosions. The egg was nicely cooked. But the broth. Agh. The broth was so bland. And ramen is all about the broth. The pork belly is better than most places I've been too and I think this is because they have a good sear on it which just makes it even more delicious. We really wanted to try the Katsudon but it was unfortunately sold out which hopefully means it's very good so I will be back again to try it. I got the charred edamame which I've never had anything like that before and it was very good. Overall it's a great atmosphere easy to get to and great food. The worst complaint I had is that they charged $25 for a small glass of whiskey which means this is good stuff they are putting out. At least a $165 bottle of whiskey. They ask you "on the rocks or neat". We got one on the rocks and one neat. By "on the rocks" they put regular ice cubes in the glass. In $25 a glass whiskey. Really? The fact that they know what they are selling is worth $25 per small glass leads me to believe they know the quality of whiskey they are selling. If you don't have whiskey rocks... don't make "on the rocks" an option. That waters down something that should be enjoyed. read more

I've been away from home for awhile and haven't had ramen in months. I have to be frank, I heard Kimura from a friend and didn't get a good review about the place. I wanted to check out the place for myself and I have to say I'm glad that I did! I'm not sure why my friend didn't have a good experience but like other reviews about Kimura Ramen... it was fantastic! Me and a couple of my friends ordered four bowls of their delicious Tonkotsu Ramen. Boy did I fall in love. When I tell you, it's worth the wait. It's worth the wait! On a sad note I do have to mention about the wait time. We came around the evening and the place was packed. I'm talking about 45 minutes-an hour and half wait. There was a lot of people waiting to be seated and the staff looked a bit overwhelmed. On a positive note, the employees were very professional and friendly! I went to Kimura for the first time on a Friday night. The restaurant was super busy with lots of customers waiting. It's not that big inside, so I definitely recommend coming early to avoid a long wait. We were quoted a 20 minute wait but ended up waiting about 35 minutes. The hostess actually seated a group that came in after us but we ended up getting our food before them, so no big deal. My boyfriend and I sat at the ramen bar. You can see straight into the kitchen and watch them cook everything. Let's start with the good part. The ramen was good - the only reason I gave 3 stars instead of 2. Their shoyu broth is slightly sweet and my favorite that I've tried in SA so far. The ramen noodles are still nice and chewy, but their pork belly was charred - something I'm not used to nor enjoyed. I actually only got one piece of pork belly and the other piece was more of pork shoulder. I looked at pictures on yelp and saw that it's not always like this so maybe the kitchen was having an off night. Now things I wasn't such a fan of... The price is expensive in my opinion - $13 for a bowl of ramen is a lot. It's downtown prices so just be aware of that. Next, if you are squeamish about food handling procedures or picky about cross contamination, I recommend not sitting at the ramen bar. I watched one staff member handle food and then take out their cell phone to text, and then handle raw fish and not wash his hands afterwards before handling a cooked egg for ramen. I also watched one staff member serve what was clearly raw gyoza (the customers sent it back and they took it off their bill) - so if you order gyoza check it before biting into it! Last, service wasn't that great. I watched several servers chatting among themselves instead of taking customer orders. A group of four people actually got up and left after being served their waters because no one came to take their order. After seeing this happen I asked one of the chefs if I could place my order with him since no one had taken our order yet. I also had to flag down a server to get our check, even though our bowls were cleared and it was obvious that we were done. My boyfriend works downtown and comes for lunch all the times and said it's never like this service or wait wise. This place was terrible. The wait was so long but pretty understandable given that we went on Christmas Eve. But I ordered TanTanMen ramen and another friend ordered the same. Mine was so salty and the noodles were all so bloated! Not like ramen noodles at all. More like the noodles from Campbell's chicken noodle soup. My friend, who ordered the same thing, his had close to no broth, super salty and the noodles were undercooked. Another friend ordered the Shoyu ramen and that one also had minimal broth and it was literally salt water. He poured his drinking water (a full cup) and that was still salty. This place is really nice but it's easy to see how they become slow with service. Today it seemed like there was only one server working which delayed getting food and paying which wasn't such a bad thing except we almost got a ticket since parking downtown is such a nightmare. The location isn't bad but it isn't the best either and it's a very small place for how busy it can get. Food wise The gyoza was good especially if you're a pork fan! I love the fact they're fried as it gives them a really nice crunch but beware that there's only 4! The ramen was pretty good just lacks a little bit more flavor. The tonkatsu ramen my dad had was missing some spicy kick to it. It's really hard to find good ramen in San Antonio especially if you've had ramen in Japan or in Chinatown in NY but this is pretty close I would highly recommend getting the the shoyu ramen as it's really tasty and I really liked it! The Tonkatsu ramen at this place is spot on. The pork belly had a crispy char on it that is the stuff dreams are made of, and the shiitake's were marinaded is something sweet that gave a great pop amid the savory broth, (perhaps a mirin marinade?). Definitely order the house spice with it, as the broth itself has no heat. I also love that this place has ramune drink! Bonus!!! read more

The restaurant is right across the street from a city parking garage, so keep that in mind for free Tuesday garage parking! The ambience of the restaurant is between modern, elegant, and semi-casual. You can feel comfortable wearing jeans or even a casual suit jacket. There's about six tables and a bar area for seating, so expect to wait if it's a busy evening. The water offered includes a large piece of "purifying" coal and the candle on the table and table setting is Asian and modern. I would say they do a pretty good job making the inside feel comfortable. The outside, on the other hand looks unremarkable. I ordered the pork tonkatsu ramen, but was offered a sample of both shoyu and tonkatsu broth samples. The tonkatsu won due to the overwhelmingly delicious pork flavoring. At $14, it seemed rather pricey, but downtown Japanese is rare so worth the extra dollars for the experience. The ramen included mushrooms (deliciously flavored and perfect amount of soy sauce-like flavoring), nori (typical fried seaweed), two slices of pork, half an egg, onion, and two slices of fish cake. The pork was really amazing and melts in your mouth with the perfect amount of grilled-tasting crispness. The broth is a bit on the saltier side, which I think takes away from the natural pork bone flavors. I really enjoyed the meal and service was great. The server was attentive and helpful in describing the food. On the other hand, it was a little odd being charged $1-2 extra dollars for additional items such as extra green onion, spice, or other small items.
