Just recently moved into Edgewater, and found this as the closest hardware store in my area. I've been here around 4 times in the past couple of weeks and I've received wonderful service. The place looks small from the outside, but it's actually pretty huge and stocked up once how enter. The staff are very helpful. The first time I went in was to make copies of my keys, unfortunately the first time one of the keys didn't work, but when I returned to get it fixed, they were very nice and got it done quickly. The last time I went to figure out a solution for my AC problem, and I got the perfect advice and materials to fix it up, and now it works smoothly. I definitely recommend this family owned store, it is now my one-stop shop for all my hardware needs! read more

When I moved here into my first apartment on my own, I didn't know much on anything. So this store is like a rite of passage from leaving dumdumville and learning now to do things myself when I didn't have anyone to depend on. Now all these years later, this has become my favorite hardware store!! You get an equal mix of: product education first hand knowledge of items in the store building/repairing things the comedy hour (they are comedians--missed their calling they did)!! From toilet seats to screws & hammers they have it all. I found stuff that I needed TODAY that even home depot said they would have to order!! And you can ask anything and you'll get an answer---with comedy smiles or with a straight face. I never knew anything about plexiglass (other than what you've seen in liquor stores) and I learned a LOT about it today. I've bought gloves & socks from there too. They have a little bit of everything for everyone. Yes bigger stores will have a lot more, but they are a miracle on broadway for us that sometimes can't get to Lowes, Menards or Home Depot. And the prices are NOT bad. Not bad at all. They cut keys of all kinds, even have small appliances. I can't recommend any one particular person because THEY ALL ROCK THE STORE!! I love this place. The store may seem small, but it's actually much bigger inside. Great neighborhood spot where they have real knowledgeable staff. This is the place to go if you want a personable experience than any corporate Home Depot. Staff have explained solutions to home improvement needs and then only charged me for an inexpensive screw. Very rare you find a store that gives sincere solutions instead of trying to make extra money. They also make keys super fast. read more

I haven't yelped Kim's? I can see it from my living room window! Coming in here always feels pleasant to me. They've always had anything I needed (painting supplies, keys, potting soil, various hardwares) and service has always been super friendly. Sometimes you gotta play along with one of the sons' schtick, which depending on your mood is either fun or something you gotta get through. But I'd still rather go here than a Home Depot any day. Hours could be better, but that's what ya get from a true family business. Never been a major issue, just takes some planning at times. One word of advice though: Unlike Morgan i HAVE had issues with keys they've made here. Just check to see they work before you pass them along to whomever. Anytime they haven't worked, they've redone it or fixed it at no charge. read more

Nice little neighborhood hardware shop. It's got what it needs, not a whole lot more. And since I rent, I don't necessarily need a lot of hardware, but for screws, nails, hand tools, and the random little hardware-ish odd and/or end, it fits the bill. My go-to-place for keys; never had a bad one from them. Prices can be par for the little family-owned store course. It's probably cheaper at a Home Depot, but they guys here are nice and helpful and will do things like cut a couple dowels for me. read more

I don't feel like I mix well with hardware stores. I'm not handy and I don't have any desire to be. Whenever I go into one of these stores I feel like everyone is speaking in the language of Rocket Science. Anyway, I wasn't really looking forward to coming in here to get keys made. I was afraid that it was going to turn into a long, drawn out process that involved power saws and paint thinners and plungers and.....etc etc Very painless. Super nice guy behind the counter. Got 2 keys made in less than 5 minutes. The keys with rubber nubbins (that's the technical term for the colored plastic covers that go on keys, right?) cost around $3.50. In. Out. Easy. read more

Kims is the place for keys. The make them quickly and perfectly! They also carry luggage, fans, door locks, and other assorted hardware type things. I use them when I need small stuff, like screws, etc. They are more than willing to help you find what you need, and talk you through the installation. I wish that they would come and install for me, but no luck! One nice thing is that they not only have a store in edgewater, but they live here too, I think. I often see one of the brothers walking around- John. They used to allow dogs in the store, but some idiot ruined it for everyone! DAMM! read more

Kim's is awesome! A family-run (I think) Korean hardware with a good selection and the nicest service you could ask for. They give the Vietnamese auto-shop (Dac and Mike's Value Services, http://www.yelp.com/biz/value-services-chicago) a few doors down a run for their money in neighborhood friendliness and being easy to deal with! They don't have the gigantic selection of the big box stores, but their selection is pretty comprehensive. Items range from economy line (careful, you get what you pay for with tools) to less-than-expensive. They also don't have the give-a-shit morons like the big box and their store isn't a square mile of orange eyesore. Be sure to ask advice since these guys are knowledgeable, helpful and speak perfect English. Always go here first for what you need, if you live in the neighborhood! read more

I am not a hardcore tool guy, but I do have some mild home improvement experience. I needed some basic tools and was expecting higher prices due to this being a mom n' pop store, but that was not the case. The tools offered were varied in price range and quality but represented a wide selection. I was able to buy: several shovels; a vise grip; a carabiner; needlenose pliers; a small wire snipper; a decent hammer AND a toolbox containing all the basics (hammer, level, allen wrench, utility knife, ETC). All of this was for 119.00. One helluva bargain. Admittedly the stuff I bought was of lower quality, (none of it was namebrand i.e. Stanley ETC). However, it works for what I need. The store employees were extremely friendly and helpful when needed. I will definitly be returning for further tool needs. read more

Very good Mom-n-Pop hardware store with a surprisingly broad selection of stuff you'll need. Prices are very fair and reflect the quality of the items. Want 75 feet of cheap garden hose for under $20? Or, the same length of super quality hose that will deliver twice as much water and last 10 years for $50? Kim's carries both. Same with tools: they have inexpensive Chinese tools for occasional use; medium quality for DIY; and usually a semi-pro quality version for when you expect to use that tool again and again. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and always available for questions. If you want to get what you need quickly with zero hassle, and be confident you paid a fair price, shop at Kim's. I ALWAYS find what I need here. I get advice, friendly service, and fair prices. I actually enjoy talking to the staff, I usually find items here not found at Target or Wal-Mart. The staff knows thier stuff, and is more than willing to help you out with honest advise. I endorse this hardware store to everyone I know. Impeccable service from honest people. I went in there today looking for a couple of eyelet screws and instead of charging me, they just let me have them since it was a small charge. I came back to pay them anyway, but I figure their kind gesture deserves a kind review here. Every time I come here, they help me immediately and are upfront if they don't have what I need or will offer a cheaper solution if they think what I'm doing is overkill. Ok this is a tiny tiny hardware store, so you're not going to find everything BUT this place is awesome for its size. Its kind of magical really. Kim's has saved me time and time again from hardware mishaps like getting home from buying all kinds of crap at Home Depot just to find out that I don't have the right size drill bit. Kim's does. He has all kinds of odd, metric, standard, random sizes of everything. One day I needed traction tape for some stairs I was building, they had it. Screen reinforcements to keep kids and cats from falling out of windows, they have em. and all kinds of housewares kinds of crap too. extra label tape for your old school labeler, fixture covers for your old old old light fixture in your apartment that you can't even figure out what fits on it. The only reason they don't get 5 stars, despite reminding me of a magic shop where that random thing appears only because you need them now, is because of their hours. They're only open till 6pm Mon-Sat and closed Sunday I think. read more

All the guys that work there are funny and nice. I get all my keys made here and probably drop in for little hardware items a couple times a month. Whenever I go I learn something new. I love this little store - all kinds of oddities alongside the basics. Saturday I went in to get one of the wheelie shopping carts to haul groceries & such, hoping they would be willing to sell me a display one already put together so I didn't have to walk it home, put it together myself, and then walk right back over there to shop... The little lady behind the counter happily gave me the assembled one I wanted, showed me a MUCH cheaper liner for it than the one displayed, and was generally adorable and very kind. The other employees I encountered were also polite & offered to help. Like others said, my only issue with the store would be the limited hours of operation. read more

I have to say that Kim's Hardware is a great neighborhood place! The service is top notch, professional, courteous, knowledgeable and friendly! Mr. Kim is still there a few days a week, ready to greet you with a smile once you walk in! His son Joon is following in his dads tradition and really keeps the place well stocked! John has been there forever it seems like and is very helpful and knows exactly what you are looking for! I am not sure of the other fellas name, but he too is of great assistance. The store is clean and bright, everything is well marked and at reasonable prices. I love this place. I moved to Edgewater 3 years ago, and since then lived in Andersonville and Rogers Park, and I still only go to this hardware store. The workers are super nice and helpful, I really know nothing about any sort of "home improvement" things and they've always been insanely helpful and never made me feel stupid, haha. I remember one time my ex and I went in just to buy a few screws and nails, we didn't know they had the $5 debit/credit policy, but the guy at the counter just gave us the stuff and was like "just remember us the next time you have any sort of hardware needs"....needless to say my ex needed to go back a few days later, for something I can't remember, and over paid for that to make up for it This place is great and I love the little family store atmosphere:) read more

Great store! I went in for a garage door-opener battery, and was amazed by being instantly greeted by the folks at the front even though there were quite a few customers milling about. They found the batteries for me instantly and changed mine for me at when I checked out. This store has a great supply, good prices, and really wonderful customer service. I purchased a backpack at an incredibly reasonable price last year at this establishment and although it saw a lot of wear and tear, it held up for over a year. I finally had to retire it so I came back to get a new one. After I bought a new one (same manufacturer) and after having it for only a week I noticed a rip in one of the pockets. I couldn't find my receipt but I thought I would take a chance and take it back. I wasn't expecting that I could. However, without question, the gentleman in the store (might have been Mr. Kim, but not sure) simply let me choose another one, and even apologized for the inconvenience. This kind of customer service isn't seen very often, and I find it so delightfully refreshing. I will only shop here for my hardware or baggage needs! read more

OMG, I was in desperate need and John came to the rescue. I had put Barkeepers Friend (soft cleanser) on my ceramic floor of my shower to get rid of some tiny rust spots. Well, instead of just putting it on my rust spots I put it on the entire shower floor, huge mistake! The bottle said tile and ceramic so I thought it was ok. Well, it formed a chalky white film on the shower floor tiles that no matter what I did, it wouldn't come off my tiles. I honestly thought I would have to replace my flooring, it was that bad. Called several hardware stores and then called Kim Hardware. I sent John pics of my floors and he suggested I try rubbing alcohol. It was quite a process along with my regular tile & tub cleaner being the final step. Wow, did it work, my tiles are back to where they used to be and I am so happy again. John knows everything about any kind of fix-it issue that might bring you into the store and immediately guides you in the right direction and gives a quick but clear and helpful overview of how you can complete a project if you were not sure. As a female it is wonderful to know there is a place I can go to pick up items for projects around my home where I will be treated with respect and given encouragement if I have any questions or reservations. Fantastic! Went on Friday to purchase paint for my living room as I like to support local businesses. They were very honest about their paint and told me if I may have difficulty covering a dark wall with it, as I chose a light color. They also told me that if I didn't like the paint, or it didn't work out, bring it back and we could work something out. It wasn't what they said, but how they said it...genuine. I went back to Kim's Tuesday for some plumbing parts for my contractor, and was given top notch service. The gentleman working the front, who I believe is an owner was very knowledgeable and didn't just point and tell me where things were, he walked me around and physically showed me to ensure I got the right product. KIM'S IS THE BEST! I needed a large piece of glass to hang from the ceiling (art student), and the prices on glass here are significantly lower than all the other places I checked. The employees were also super helpful, and kind. I had never used glass before and only had an idea of how I would hang it, an employee helped me pick out all the hardware to use and walked me through the whole process. As I was waiting for the my glass to be cut I walked around finding the lower prices on cleaning supplies than Home Depot. I also picked up the pepper spray I had been looking for, for less than amazon had it listed. The customer service alone sets this place apart from the rest. I recommend this place to my friends and I will definitely be a repeat customer. A++ read more

Sometimes they feel like helping, sometimes not. Seems younger of the two guys working is a great helper - so for him would be 4. But minus points for awkward credit card and return policies, hours that force me to the big boxes, rather disorganized store layout, and lack of knowledge compared to Clark/Devon. Note this is an up review though for customer service only which has gotten better a notch compared to when I gave it a 2 star. read more
