I've loved KimBob-Rex (now Sushi Rex) since they were a food truck! I first tried these amazing sushi burritos when I was in the Ocean Park area of Santa Monica and was immediately hooked. Every disappointment, setback, or challenge at work was healed with a sushi burrito from Kimbobrex :) I'm so glad they are a brick and mortar restaurant now and have had the chance to visit a few times. I love the Spicy Rex Burrito and the Sashimi. The onion sauce is diiiiivine. My mom adores their yellowtail collar! Service is so friendly and warm. You can really tell how much love and care goes into each burrito and dish. Fish is fresh and portions are pretty hefty. Dining area is lovely with the cutest plants and dino drawings. I am not sure how this place got so many high ratings but it was one of the worst tasting sushi's I've ever tried. I ordered a baked Alaskan roll and salmon was stinky, slimy, and inedible! It must have been so old, I was STARVING and couldn't even force myself to eat it. Service was also ridiculously slow, there was one other customer when I was there, and I waited 20 minutes for one sushi order. Sushi and fish need to always be fresh and top quality because it goes bad quickly if not properly handled. I found myself regretting not getting ralphs sushi because that would've been 100x better. Please stop serving customers awful fish quality. If your fish expired or wasn't handled properly, have some integrity and THROW IT OUT. read more

We decided to give it a try and ended up being extremely impressed with the entire experience. The decor is very inviting, and the food was excellent. One of the things I ordered was a dragon roll, which actually was prepared to look like a stunning dragon, the eel piece they used for the dish was a very generous size, and most importantly the taste was wonderful. The teriyaki udon was very good. It had broccoli, green beans, onion, carrots and chicken. It was a big serving too, good for the price. Had the spam kimchi musubi, which had a good amount of kimchi and a nice sized slice of spam. Very flavorful. Rex poki bowl, came with tuna, octopus, scallions, shrimp, crab meat, and rice. Good sized bowl for the price too. Everything tastes fresh and not fishy, which is amazing. Customer service is always great. I've honestly never been amazed by sushi burritos. They are typically overloaded with cheap ingredients and spicy mayo, and are not well proportioned to really allow the fresh fish to shine. This place changed my mind. I liked the sashimi rex. There were large, fresh cuts of sashimi, and a bit of rice-- not too much. I'm gonna give these folks the benefit of the doubt. So it's a small location and you can tell their processes is NOT fine tuned. This means that their system from ordering to delivery of the meal needs more work. Simply put, takes long when busy. I waited over 50mins after ordering. And customers ahead of me voiced to be manager of how long they were waiting. Granted the delay is shown through the care they put into the craft. Quality is good. I used to love their Philadelphia burrito and have ordered the same thing most of the times. Today, I ordered the same Philadelphia burrito that came with a black & white checkered wrapper I've never got from here before. I used to get the burritos with white wrappers. I didn't give much thought-I mean it's just a wrapper. But that was only until I took a few bites and saw smudges on my fingers. I tried to wipe with a tissue but the smudge didn't get completely wiped. I looked at the box and it had black stains from the wrapper. The sushi burrito was wrapped with black seaweed paper so I couldn't tell if the ink got on the body of the burrito. So I checked the bottom and saw a part of salmon stained. I threw away the rest. I texted the business to let them know about the issue, thinking it might help them from getting bigger problems later on. I didn't ask for a refund or a fresh batch. The lady called me and said they've been using the wrapper for 10 years, never had an issue, and there are two other customers dining in at the moment who have no problem. I was just astounded by her invalidation coming from defensiveness and treating me like a mere complainer. I said I can send the photos. She said if I bring the burrito back she can make again. I told her that's not necessary, since that was not my intention. I sent in photos, no response. Her narrow right or wrong perspective made her defensive, which could've been replaced by an effort to listen to the other's perspective and a simple resolution. Food is good but service is sloooooow. Imagine the slowest possible service and then double that time! The first school fundraiser held here was a disaster. Many families left to eat elsewhere because of the awful wait time. I held back from writing a review the first time around to see whether there would be improvements made. Today was the second school fundraiser experience and my family was quoted 40min for pick up. The wait was actually 1 hr 30 min+...why haven't things changed??? They didn't learn from their mistake from the first fundraiser! And apparently neither did I. This is unacceptable. Unfortunately, we will not be participating again. To the business: if you are hosting a fundraiser please hire more people to support the staff during dinner hours. If this cannot be done, decline the partnership for fundraising. This also results in many missed donation opportunities for the school. read more

The owner and chef is beyond talented, hard working, and original. I appreciate every single creation he's made. His staff is also very well trained, easy going, welcoming and very helpful. Overall excellent experience. My only complaint is that they no longer have their food truck. But I'm thankful for this permanent location. It's clean and easy to locate.
