Do NOT, DO NOT go to Kim's Nails on S. Highland. I've been regular customer for 5 years- always scheduling in advance, always on time, always courtesy & generous. I've noticed the quality of work has been on a steady decline. Sam is great & actually does a beautiful job when he isn't pressured by the owner to hurry-up. Rather than do my acrylics right, she rushes him as her goal is money, not quality of service. Do not think otherwise-it didn't matter I was a 5 year customer- if Sam took his time she would hover over him to hurry tf up. Over time, Sam's work has declined as a result of him being badgered by the owner. They both tried convincing me to get shorter acrylics (less time but same fee) or to not get glittery nails (more time to apply yet same fee). Do they charge less for women with short nails? No. Do they charge less for clients who just want buffed, no polish? No. While my acrylics are long and glittery, they cannot adopt the "you win some, you lose some" approach and instead kept trying to convince me to get my nails done in a way that makes them the most money in the least amount time. The quality has declined too so they are looking like beaver's tails vs an apex, the acrylic itself is thick as not enough time is spent. That acrylic then cracks more easily. Which brings me to the MEDICAL ISSUE created: my index finger was in SEVERE pain, turning purple and lost circulation as a result of a cracked nail in heavy, unfiled acrylic. My index finger pad was no longer "squishy" and turned hard. I appeared at the shop on a Sat. I explained the crises to the owner and asked they just remove the acrylic nail to relieve my finger of what could become a medical emergency. She refused. She said Sam wasn't there. I asked that anyone do it- my finger was in very bad shape. She didn't even get up from her table, she didn't ask to look at it- she flagrantly, callously did not care. Two other nails techs were just sitting there with no clients. They could have removed this one nail. She refused. I told her I would have to go to the ER then. Her utter disinterest was compassionless. Ultimately, I went to Med Express. After waiting an hour I learned they couldn't help and they didn't understand why the salon that installed the nail wouldn't just remove it? I was advised to go to the ER. I then spent hours and hours in the ER. Ultimately it was pried off my finger to save my finger. I will be reporting the salon to the cosmetology board as this is in violation of their license. read more

Very disappointed in my gel nails. The application was the thickest I have ever seen in my entire life (and I've gotten gels for the past 5 years and religiously every 2 weeks for the last 9 months). It hasn't even been 5 days and I have 4 completely missing nails (peeled off in one whole piece) and three chipped nails. I even had an appointment!! Soooo I stopped in to Kim's nails because I had been seeing the great reviews and the nail place I went to previously in Pittsburgh sucked. So I went on a Thursday (today) around 2PM and the place is really quiet. No excessive talking or anything. Just the TV, which made me happy because I'm super shy and sometimes am really awkward. They didn't seem too enthusiastic when I arrived but they were kind. The woman (I didn't get Her name but she's an older lady with shoulder length hair and glasses) did an amazing job on my toes. Like thoroughly made sure they were perfect. I'm not too picking about my feet but I felt like she did an excellent job. She also picked out a perfect fall color for me. I decided to try the dip gel nails! Which I really like! They are much stronger than the shellac nails I've been getting and I actually love how they look. The lady that did my nails did a pretty good job, but there are some spots on my nails that are uneven - however I don't mind (I'm also not sure if this is a normal occurrence on dip gel nails). Figured I'd treat myself to a gel/dip manicure this evening, but didn't know it would take 2 hours from the time I sat in the technician's chair. The woman who did my nails got up 4 times to either wax someone's eyebrows, finish their pedicure, or grab food for herself from the back. $45 for a basic manicure included: filing my nails too short to where it hit the nerve, sanding too close to the cuticle to where she scraped skin on several fingers, and to have a $3 charge on any debit card used to pay. I love this salon!!! I've gone about 4 times. I used to go to the salon across the street, but decided to give this place a try. So far it's been a great decision! It's never too busy when I come and the place is very clean and organized. Nikki is a sweetheart. My gel polish lifted after a couple days ( gel never stays on my nails for long .. Not her fault..) and she was so kind and redid them for me free of charge with a smile on her face. She is a wonderful human being. Every time I come all the employees know me by name and say hello. I would recommend making an appointment with her and not just allowing anyone to do your nails here. They can be quite busy on Fridays so make an appointment or they may ask you to come back. The negatives: I've had a really bad experience with the male nail tech with tattoos (not sure of his name). He's always in a rush, poor technique, and your acrylics will probably pop off). If you're not sure which one he is he's probably outside smoking between every client. He also doesn't wash the cigarette smell and germs off his hands before he does your nails. BEWARE. They were friendly and accommodating. The selection of nail polishes is good and most bottles appeared fresh and the color selections were current. The spa mani pedi includes a decent massage and their massage chairs work well. Ana did my nails and she did a good job. The woman next to me was getting a manicure with an organic powder that builds up on the nail--I think it's called NextGenNails and it looked great. The environment is relaxed and the shop is clean. I'd go again if in town, and I'd definitely check out the NextGenNails product--I haven't seen that at other salons. read more

There really isn't anything good to say about this salon unfortunately. While it's new within the past year, the place looked older. The nail polish selection was limited, they don't have dryers for your hands or feet, and the guys doing our nails kept going outside to smoke and would come back in smelling like cigarettes. There were cut nails all on the floor where my mom sat (not from her) and they did a poor job on my mom's mani. I think what sealed the deal for us on never coming back was that both of our pedis were chipped and peeling within a week. I've been eyeing this place for awhile, but between the bad mani/pedi jobs and the awful parking nearby (not their fault, but definitely is a deterrent for me), I won't be coming back here again! read more

This place is hit or miss. I've gone about half a dozen times and the first two or three were decent for both pedicure and gel French manicures. I tried to then go for a gel manicure with a design and they looked horrible. I decided maybe nail designs just aren't their thing and went back and got a pretty decent gel French manicure again. Recently went again for a Pedicure and they look no better than if I did them at home. A bit streaky/bumpy and my cuticles look jagged. Today I had Nicky and my mom had Sam. Everything was done really well, as I expected. The place is always clean and full of regulars which is great. Everyone is so friendly and professional, and they do such good work. I've tried this place 5 or 6 times in the past year living nearby but Monday's appointment was my absolute last attempt. It's never been a great place; the "spa" pedicure is super damn basic but priced between a basic and a spa pedicure at typical places. The whole service is always short and transactional, with no luxuries or small talk. But it's usually been decently busy on weekends, so I took for granted that the C+/B- pedicures I've received were rushed for that reason. And it's so close by and never too busy to get in without much advance notice... I've put up with it in the absence of an easy alternative. Until now. Monday was a holiday and while off work, I called in for a last minute appointment in early afternoon. When I arrived, there were only 2 employees in the shop, sitting on opposite sides of the long room and both tapping away on their phones while some terrible soap opera played in the background. My nail tech (never twice the same one previously) was a bit nicer than is standard there, but my "spa" pedicure was done in 30 minutes flat. Exfoliation? No. 15 seconds each foot with one of those not commercial grade motorized files that had zero effect. Massage? No. Maybe 30 seconds on each foot to apply lotion. OK, so "spa" pedicure with no exfoliation or massage is not ideal. However, not a single customer arrived or called during my entire stupid visit and still the crappy effort. Just me and the nail tech, while the other employee wandered off to the back, and yet I still get processed through as if this weren't something people do to be nice to themselves (forget about the tragedy of calling it a "spa" anything). And, like twice before, my nails weren't all filed straight or the same length and there were sloppy polish residue on a few toes. So the pedicure is now just a polish change and poor one at that! I'm super irritated and yet I tip and leave, rethinking my writing off of this place for the lame experiences repeatedly. Not at all great but not so terrible that my Yelp muscle is tensing. Maybe just look for another place and let it go. And then this morning I notice the red, itchy bumps on my legs. Just from the ankle to several inches below my knees where I had pushed my jeans up for the pedicure. Both legs. Both itchy, raised, irritated bumps- like a cross between mosquitoe bites and razor burn. Only on that part of my legs that were accessible during the pedicure 48 hours earlier. No f-ing idea what the hell this is (see photo, people) but I've been a regular pedicure girl for decades and never once, on any continent or in any condition, including a pedicure from a mop bucket in rural Vietnam, had a pedicure-related infection. There's always horror stories of terrible nail fungus and dirty spas but no matter what the circumstances, it's never happened to me. Except here and now. I bought a spa pedicure and got a skin infection (?), new allergy from the products, despite not being someone who is allergic to anything (?), who knows what (!) instead!!! This is a fantastic new salon in the Shadyside area, and I would highly recommend it. The salon is clean, friendly, and not overly busy. I came on a Saturday morning for a pedicure with a friend and they were able to get us right in. The polish selection is vast, and the technicians are professional and dedicated. They were just chatty enough that we felt comfortable while still being able to relax. We were also offered a drink, which was a nice touch. Everything was clean and sterilized nicely. My toes looked great and I was very pleased with the results! Today marks the four week mark since I got my pedicure, and my toes STILL look great! I have never had a pedicure last so long in my entire life; I wear heels every day at work, and only one of my toes has slightly chipped. They still look awesome. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place based on my experience. I went in for a regular mani/pedi. Two stars because I was able to be seated right away and they used sterilized tools. The polish job on my nails is horrible and less than 24 hours later three of my nails are chipped which will only get worse. I am leaving for vacation tomorrow and do not have time to return so, unfortunately, I am out 50 bucks. The man was nice but his hands were not steady in doing my polish. When he kept trying to clean it up on the sides he'd end up taking more polish off my nail. He also forgot the hand massage and realized his mistake halfway through painting my nails - he was going to take my polish off to complete the massage but I kindly declined as I did not want to remove a whole hand of polish and re-apply.
