I wanted to like Kilted Donut so much. I had been following them on social media since they first opened and it was a destination spot for me the last time I visited Edinburgh. I was expecting to visit multiple times because the handmade artisan donuts looked so good and had such interesting flavor options, including vegan ones (and now NGCI ones too)!
However, I didn't really like them in the end. We tried several flavors: The best being the Jammy, then Lemon Drop, Biscoff, and least best being Pistachio Crunch. Jammy stood out because it was really quite filled with a tart, refreshing raspberry jam and had sugar crystals all on the outside. With the other three, all of the flavor came exclusively from the icing, which is thin compared to the tough, chewy donut itself. With many bites, the frosting would flake off entirely, falling to the ground. I wish the lemon also had lemon goo inside!
The star of the show here is 1) the staff and 2) the beverages. The staff is friendly and engaging; the coffees are lovely. If you get the chance, try the Iced Pistachio Chai Latte with oat milk and no whipped cream. I'm not really a chai person, but this might have changed my mind! It's perfectly pistachio forward (unlike the donut). My partner had an Iced Americano with oat milk that was also really solid. I can't wait to come back here for a bevvy (and, yeah, probably to try the next round of seasonal donuts too even though I said I didn't like them)! read more
