The appointment person was pleasant, but the triage nurse refused to make an appointment because my Duke Urgent Care referral was insufficient to justify an appointment. She said I needed to see an eye doctor before I could see an eye doctor. Then she suggested if I really needed medical care I could drive from Raleigh to Winston-Salem to receive help. As a follow-up, they called today asking why I hadn't made an appointment. Then they bad-mouthed the provider at another office who did provide care. A class act all around. Love Duke Primary Care. Nothing but praise for Duke Primary Care and Duke Urgent Care. But Duke Eye Center of Raleigh can stick it.

I had been thinking of LASIK for years but only recently decided to follow through. I had searched…read morethe local Raleigh area and found Porter Ophthalmology had the best and highest reviews. The lower star ratings I read seemed to be related to insurance related issues so I ruled those out. I initially tried to make an appointment online but never heard anything so I called a few days later. The receptionist was friendly and immediately sent me forms via email to complete prior to my consultation. My wife and I went to the consultation and met Dr Porter and his wonderful staff. After completing all the required tests and asking Dr Porter more questions than I probably should...we scheduled the pre-op appointment and my surgery. The pre-op lasted about 2 hours, which included dilation of my eyes. I drove home afterwards with little issue. Surgery day (yesterday). We showed up just prior to my 0910 appointment and we were sent to a small room just outside the inpatient surgery room (or whatever you want to call it). Friendly staff came in and spoke with us and put some numbing drops in my eyes. Shortly thereafter I was in the room and having the surgery. I will note now that I am 54 and wore progressive lenses so we went with monovision for my surgery. Meaning that my left eye is for reading and my right (dominant) eye is for distance. Seems weird, right? After the surgery, which lasted less than 10 minutes, we received some final instructions and we were on our way home. My vision was cloudy but I could make out pretty much everything. I rested for a few hours in a mostly dark room, putting drops in every hour as directed. After 4-5 hours the cloudiness was almost gone and I could see TV and read fairly well. My eyes were slightly itchy but the eye drops seemed to alleviate the issue. Later on in the evening my left eye began to ache slightly so I took Motrin and went to sleep. Woke up today and vision was even better than the day before. We went to my 0900 appointment and again met with Dr Porter. After a series of checks he stated my eyes were between 20/25 and 20/20, which I haven't had in about 11 years. I was worried about the blended vision but my brain is quickly adapting. Dr Porter said that my vision will continue to improve over the next 4-6 weeks. My only regret is that I waited so long to have this surgery.

While going over charges at the end, I had a $145 contact fitting fee. I've been wearing contacts for years so no one helped me "fit" anything. I asked for one pair of contact lens samples to take with me to use during the two week wait time and was told no. $718 and 3 hours later (no exaggeration ) I was finally on my way out. I did ask if that time frame was typical and was told that it was normal now that they've switched to virtual. I now know after reading other reviews that it's actually not typical. I feel deceived on pricing and my time and patronage were not respected or appreciated. I'll be picking up my glasses (cheapest pair available) and contacts and will never visit again. I'll add that the virtual visit with the doctor and technician was fine and both were professional. Unfortunately this doesn't make up for the rest of the visit but it's at least one good caveat to this.

I have insurance Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and have not lapse insurance in I do not know how many years, so this shouldn't happen from a primary care appointment. 2. I gave them my insurance card when i came in and they input my information. 3. they never called me to notify me that i had a bill or sent out notification that i had a bill, so how am i to know i have a bill. 4. I am also a patient access front desk staff for a hospital and am well aware of the no surprise care act where you should not have services rendered and be unaware or surprised by a random cost or bill. Next problem is i was instructed that my insurance company did not pay out after the claim for services were sent in, and that i should call my insurance company, this is also not something I the pt should be doing, but i called anyways and found out nothing was ever recieved by this place. so now i call thier billing department with my bcbs insurance rep on a 3 way call to straighten out and find where the disconnect is, ofc it was on the pcp side as they switched the last two numbers of my policy number when inputing my insurance information. Next problem i have been calling for 3 days straight trying to find out had the issue been resolved and i was also going to schedule my mother a new patient appt for the same day as my upcoming appt. every time i call i was told to hold not asked if i could like the proper protocol but told to hold and immediately placed on hold, ALL 3 TIMES!!!, by the last call i asked her not to place me on hold and she still did, at this point i am now calling to check the resolution of the bill and also to cancel my upcoming appointment as i have lost interest in continuing care with this PCP office strictly off the front desk incompetency alone, to no avail i cannot get them to stop placing me on hold.
