A disappointing community service that only provides service if your handicapped child fits into…read moretheir box. We enrolled our daughter with autism in the summer program only to have her "kicked out" because she was hard to handle. She was 17 and is currently in a special school where she had no behavioral plan in her IEP. Hard to handle? No. The real deal with TURN was that their staff wasn't trained. Any reputable program trains staff and hires people who are capable of doing more than just pushing wheel chairs. How about people who are physically fit so they can take off after a child who runs? ( like kids with autism sometimes do ) Or staff who are mature enough to handle handicapped children whose lives are fairly limited and, when they meet a new caregiver, really like them? One of our daughter's staff was blatantly cold and rude -- as if our child couldn't feel or tell the difference? See, that's not a trained caregiver. That's an immature, untrained college-age student who THINKS they can do a challenging job but shouldn't. And that's where TURN needs to be diligent--in hiring. Their program is fun and balanced, but only if your child is sedated, in a wheel chair or completely compliant. ( And what child is?) After they kicked our child out of their program, they told us we'd receive paperwork documenting her 'incidents". No paperwork ever came. Unprofessional. An expensive lesson for us we will never repeat and don't want other families to experience, either.

But they're always running late worse than a Dr office. Even first thing in the morning. So I wait from 30 min to a hr together started. Then all the reparative paper work. It's getting old fast. I haven't quit yet. Because I know blood is needed.

While I was a little ticked to find out that there wasn't a class in the SLC area in all of March, I hoofed it out to Provo to their Red Cross class. The facility isn't much to write home about, but they have all the equipment to get top-flight training. Their training is "blended", meaning you spend most of the time learning online, then you come to class to put into practice what you've learned. The training was conducted by Ted Bisping, who did a good job not just with the material, but "real-life" scenarios he had personally experience. We spent half the class in expanding on the basics, the second practicing scenarios. Of course, there was work on the CPR dummies (clean, shiny, and brand-spanking new!) You really have to put this part in action because there's a lot of physicality when giving around 100 compressions a minute! For the First Aid, we worked with partners on treating severe wounds. Bloody good training, so-to-speak. They also had a baby / child CPR section that used baby dummies. I was also a little ticked the thing was scheduled for an hour, and it ran 90+. After getting out of the stuffy room and home and getting my certificate, I was a little more pleased with the whole experience. Move over Fray, the Red Cross is the best place to learn How To Save A Life.
