On this past Sunday morning, I was on a mission to try a new restaurant somewhere south of the James River. While on my quest towards finding this place, I stumbled across the new Kickback Jacks on Midlothian Turnpike. Prior to visiting this Kickback Jacks, I had the opportunity to visit the Broad Street location a little under a year ago and the experience wasn't anything to write home about. I was also able to visit this location on a Monday night during a football game to see if there was a difference in experience. So how did this experiences go? To find out, read below.
The Good:
Layout- This Kickback Jacks is the sports bar to rival all sports bars. There had to be a least 15 flat screen TV's that I saw and possibly many more, all having the ability to play different football games. The tables are situated so that everyone sitting down has the ability to see a TV without having their back turned. And because this location used to be the old Tripps, the seating inside has surely increased from when the old restaurant used to be in business.
Sunday Morning Service- Service was not spectacular, but compared to my experience at the location on Broad Street, the service was pretty good. The server did not need to be hunted down for refills on drinks, the food arrived at my table in less than 20 minutes and I aside from having fries that were somewhat lukewarm, I didn't have any other complaints.
Taste of Philly Cheesesteak- I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak which came with Fries. The Philly, which wasn't a traditional Philly, was still a pretty good tasting sandwich and the fries did not require any additional seasoning in my opinion. The food was also filling which was a plus with me.
The Not So Good:
Monday Evening Service- The quality of service seemed to be like night and day. While Sunday morning service was very quick and the food came out hot, Monday evening service was extremely slow. The server would disappear for long periods of time. The food had taken over 30 minutes to come out and when it did, the food was cold.
Taste of the Award Winning Wings- I tend to judge the quality of a wing by how it tastes without the extra rubs and sauces, so I ordered my wings traditional. The wings are significantly smaller than other wing places like B Dubs, Bonchon (even the Midlothian location) and Hooters. The taste without the extras was pretty average. Nothing really separated the quality of the wing from other wing places without or without the seasoning/sauce.
Price- The price for items in this restaurant were a little high in my opinion. The restaurant has a lunch special which can include 6 wings and a side for $6, but I'm a growing boy with a huge appetite. 6 wing dings to me is not even appetizer worthy. The cost of $10 wings was $10 if not a little more and it did not come with a side. For comparison purposes, Bonchon sells 10 wings for around the same price, but the wings are three times the size. Hooters sells a similar portion and price, but the wings are double the size. So to me, when it comes to the wings, the decision to have the small once made he hesitant to spend so much money on them.
Overall- I was amazed with the new Kickback Jacks location, food has a good taste and I would definitally recommend this place to be a good hang out for watching sports events. Aside from the price of some food items I had no other outstanding issue with the restaurant. FOUR STARS read more
