It's not super fancy, but as far as a regular "I want Pad Thai and some curry spot", this is it! Authentic (as much as someone would say never having been to Thailand), tasty, good service, and not the normal Boulder price tag. I'm new to Boulder but this will be one of my go-tos for lunch in the area. They had a good variety of standard and unique lunch options. I went here for the first time this past Sunday and thought the food was very good. My cousin and I arrived around 5pm and grabbed one of the last few tables. After being in the sun most of the day and not eating too much, basically the entire menu sounded fantastic to us. I settled on the Red Curry and she the Pad Kra Prau and we split dishes to get a better sampling. I thought both had great flavor and the only thing I would add is more heat. In all seriousness, I would personally rate their "Spicy Recipes" (their term) as something that would be rated "low heat" at most other Thai restaurants. I asked for some hot sauce/sriracha and added a little of it to the curry although I will say I'm not a huge fan of sitting in a restaurant squirting colored sauce into whatever I happen to be eating in order to get the dish hot enough. Call me crazy...... The other Thai restaurants I have to compare are in Denver - US Thai, Tommy Thai's, Thai Basil & Swing Thai. I'd say the Red Curry at Khow is a close 2nd to the Red Curry at Swing Thai. I'd definitely come back here though and next time have one of the dish prepared hot/thai hot and see what happens. read more

One of my absolute favorites in Boulder. The food here is fresh and delicious. The menu offers a wide variety in Thai cuisine including soups, salads (the papaya salad here is by far the best I've had), a good variety of curry dishes (with the Panang as my personal fav) and great noodle dishes ( you must try the Pad Thai and the Pad Kee Mow). They certainly do not skim on the portions here and complementary soup come with all entrees. My favorite time to come is during lunch (11am-4pm) when they include the free egg roll as well. On the down side they are a bit pricey, especially during dinner. $2.75 for a small side of peanut sauce? come'on. Also, although I do love fast food, most of the time the entree makes it to the table before I've finished my appetizer, which can be a bit overwhelming. The food was nothing to write home about. We were excited because it has been awarded the best Thai food in Boulder, and we have been constantly disappointed by the Thai options in this town. We had a shrimp spring roll appetizer, and found it to be roughly the same quality as the ones you can get at Whole Foods, except the accompanying peanut sauce here was worse - thick, cloying, and fishy. I had pad see ew, my wife had veggie curry. The food was unimpressive and not any better than other places in town, which is a low bar. I discovered a long, black hair under the sauce at the bottom of my pad see ew plate when I was scraping the leftovers into a to-go carton. The waitstaff claimed that the guys working the grill had buzzcuts and seemed to imply I had placed it there because I did not discover it until the end of our meal. The hair did not match my wife, and there was an older woman with long dark hair (and no hairnet) clearly visible in the kitchen. They did not offer an apology or even send a manager over. One of my favorite restaurants in Boulder, eat here at least once a week. Order something spicy and specify mild/medium/American/Thai (beware of Thai hot). My favorite dish is the Khow Pad Sriracha with brown rice instead of white, beef, American hot. The Sriracha noodles are also great. I have friends that crave the curry. The soup is also magical. Service is hit or miss, depends on the day. Owners are nice and will always make it right if something goes wrong. The weekday lunch rush is crazy and seating can be hard to come by. I work nearby and have several coworkers that love this place too, so it isn't just me. I also have some that don't get why we love it so much, apparently it isn't for everyone as some reviews suggest. It is worth a try. read more

Overall Khow Thai is just pretty "meh." I've been here a few times, and every dish I've ordered has been very so-so. My main complaint is that the curries in particular are lacking in flavor and pretty plain. Another thing I didn't like is with dishes such as Pad Thai they often don't ask the spice level, and when I did request a medium spice level all they did was make the same dish but put a bunch of dry red pepper flakes on it. Not the usual Thai approach. Again, the food isn't terrible, but there are much better places in town if you're looking for Thai food. read more

I have eaten Thai all over the world and know the food well. I ordered the MEE Krob which is a fried noodle dish. Every Thai place makes this and is a standard for beginners exploring thai. Just a total no all around. I ordered carry out and was first "greeted" by a little blonde who had about as much customer service as a tick. This was the first time I almost walked out. The second was when I spotted them microwaving dish after dish. Now- Im no chef, but if I wanted something microwaved I would've stayed home and saved 30$. If you are one to like the cheap flavoring packages found in ramen noodles - Khow Thai Cafe would be the ideal place for you. I ordered the Tom Yum soup with a side of egg rolls and rice. The consistency of the soup was bland and watery. The looks of it when the soup arrived was already displeasing. However the egg rolls were no better, as if they were fresh from the microwave oven. Everyone knows that a good egg roll can hold up by itself without a dipping sauce. I'm afraid the sauce that accompanied with my egg rolls might overpower the taste buds for unsuspecting costumers. Lastly the rice. I didn't even get a scent of jasmine - to which I call this the "filler." I get the hint my waiter just wanted to get the job done. A little human socializing wouldn't hurt. I've eaten here twice, and the second time was only to see if something had gone horribly wrong on my first visit, since so many people seem to like this place. We had an appetizer and soup and then ordered two entrees to share. Everything was prepared tastefully! I am unfortunately enjoying my last bowl of Panang Curry from Khow Thai. I have frequented this place for years and have always put up with the owners general grumpiness towards customers because the food has been good. Sometimes I will even walk over for lunch takeout and if I don't have a bowl at work I will ask them for a takeout container to eat from at my desk (the curry typically comes in a large plastic container that is not conducive to eat from). However, today I was informed by the server that I would have to pay an addtional fee for the takeout tray. Sorry Larry, but that was the last straw. Thankfully, a friend recently turned me on to Buddha Cafe, where the food is just as good, if not better, and the staff seems to sincerely appreciate your business. My new favorite! read more

Have been living in Thailand for 9 or 10 years and like Khow Thai now I am in Boulder. Beef salad was better than Thailand (the beef is better in the US). Recent meal was with eggplant now that I am leaning toward vegetarian and was "alloy" (good taste and again high quality. Run by real Thai family and waitresses are all "jai dee" (kind heart). Can vary the spiciness according to preference. In Thailand they always lean toward too spicy for me anyway. Nice to have this island of Thai culture with its characteristic friendly atmosphere and excellent food to boot. read more

Whenever we're in Boulder and want Thai food, we go to Khow Thai. The food is always tasty, regardless of what we order. The soup they serve with every meal is simple, a little sweet, but very good. We found this place driving through town hungry and unable to find the original restaurant we were hunting for. We are glad we got lost and found Know Thai because it was absolutely delicious. They gave complimentary soup which was yummy. We got the chicken pad thai and chicken red curry and while the chicken pad thai was good, no complaints, the red curry chicken was AMAZING!!!! Well, I gave Know Thai another chance the other night, and boy am I glad. I was really missing Thai since I moved here from San Francisco. Mediocre food, at best, and my partner declared it the worst Thai food ever. I have had worse (San Antonio, for instance). The atmosphere lacked at any charm but the server was very pleasant and food was delivered quickly. As with other reviewers, I'm rather surprised at how this joint was rated 'best' of anything.
