I have tried many a thai restaurants and I would put this one somewhere in the middle. I tend to order from another thai restaurant quite often, but I feel their quality went a bit downhill so decided to take a little break for now...I ordered the Tom Kha and the Yellow curry, but was delighted to find that they delivered a little eggroll and started soup complimentary! The eggroll was crunch, and a nice shell to stuffing ratio. I was a huge fan of the little sauce they brought with it, it was a sweet and hot sauce, but I had my own hot sauce I could dip it in. Honestly, I didn't try the little soup bc I had ordered a big soup, but I still thought it was a nice touch. The yellow curry was a little watered down, but the flavor was there. I ordered it "thai hot" and it was just right as far as the spice level is concerned. There were a couple pieces of gristle on my meat, which is the main reason I didn't give this joint 4 stars. The Tom Kha was quite a lovely surprise... It had all of the flavor I was looking for, but it was super loaded with veggies, etc. The mushrooms were thinly sliced as well which I LOVED. The chicken meat was quality, there just wan't a ton of it (even though I ordered extra chicken). The dining room is very small (be prepared to feel like you're seated with three other parties) and the food is a bit greasy. I just ordered take out today, and got the pad thai lunch special as well as large thai ice tea. First of all, I would like to point out the fried egg roll and soup was very good, as well as the thai ice tea. However my main entre, chicken pad thai was pretty bad. Like Jess who wrote a review earlier, I too am from SF and am very experienced with thai food. This pad thai was horrible. It was very saucy and dripping wet. I have never had pad thai like this, and no this is not how it is made either... I am beginning to wonder if this is an authentic thai resturaunt given that they had fried egg rolls, which are commonly found in chinese resturaunts. I also asked for my pad thai to be a little spicy, which they refused to do. If you want good thai food and dont mind the drive, I would head out to Thai Kitchen in longmont. This is the one place in Colorado that I find to have the best thai food in this entire state...and ive already tried over 6 other thai food places here nothing compares to CA thai food, but Thai Kitchen is pretty close up there! read more

The food here is good. Not fabulous or exquisite, but if it's Wednesday night and you need some take-out, I say go for it. That being said: they need to be more careful with their kitchen ingredients. I ordered a stir-fry that was contaminated with tree nuts, to which I have an allergy. It's really important for restaurants to keep allergenic foods (nuts, shellfish, etc.) away from their other ingredients. If you have allergies, be careful eating here. Where to even start? Nearly every time I visit Boulder, I make it a point to stop by for some Khow Thai. I myself am partial to the sriracha stirfry, but their curries and pad thai are also phenomenal. All dishes are extremely flavorful, huge portions, and are always cooked to perfection with fresh ingredients. Before you get your large plate (I always take home leftovers), the wait staff brings out a small dish of sour soup. I'm not 100% sure what it is, but it's a tasty little broth with mushroom, tomato, cilantro, and tofu. And let's not forget their heavenly thai tea, either - another must. Now, for my favorite restaurant I'd really like to give it 5 stars... however, the wait staff is comprised of college kids who really don't care about how long you've been waiting and are not all that attentive at times. My husband and I stopped in here for lunch last week and really enjoyed it. We noticed the restaurant many times along Broadway and finally had a moment to stop in. The place was pretty busy considering it was 2pm. You walk up and place your order at the register and then choose a table in which to sit at. This place is meant for smaller groups (no more than 4 people) as seating can be limited during peak hours and they only have so many employees working. The prices are cheap and the food is delicious. Lunch meals come with a fried egg roll and hot soup, which was delicious. The portions were large -- so much that we didn't finish our food! we ordered yellow curry (chicken) and tofu pad see ewe -- very easy and popular thai dishes. I recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious (and inexpensive) thai food! They have their own parking lot, which is really nice. I also noticed they were voted Best Thai restaurant, which i think is great. I haven't had a chance to try enough Thai restaurants but I think this place is def in the top 5 for me. read more

The appetizer thai shrimp spring rolls were fantastic, and nice and large! They gave us a small bowl of soup on the house, and it strangely smelled like pee...maybe because it had bamboo in it and bamboo can be smelly like that. It was meh, I picked out the veggies and left behind the broth and bamboo. I don't remember what I ordered. I do remember the portion sizes were large, but like a lot of places they skimped on the proteins and veggies and substituted with extra rice. I'd rather it be the other way around. Ate Saturday dinner with 4 friends here. Service was prompt & we were given a tasty soup appetizer upon sitting down. I was delighted by a creamy & delicious Panaeng Curry; everyone else was also very pleased with their food (including my friend's wife, who is a picky eater.) Overall, I am a big fan of Thai food and this place is excellent. For those who complain about too hot/salty/sweet, its plainly stated on the menu that you can ask them to temper the seasoning to your likening. This place is a keeper. read more

Met my great friend Michelle in Boulder and we found this place by chance last night. Food was great and spicy and delicious. Service was really good too, providing amazing recommendations in line with what we wanted. First time i ever had chicken in fish sauce which was surprisingly good. Khow Thai is a solid place to eat Thai food. It's close to downtown Boulder. Don't go to Khow Thai for the atmosphere. The atmosphere is pretty basic, more take-out style, hole-in-the-wall (nothing wrong with it, still comfortable to eat at!) but I largely do take-out when I eat Khow Thai. I love their tofu peanut stirfry. This is as good as this dish has come and you can sub brown rice for white, if you prefer. Khow Thai is one of my favorite Thai places in Boulder. The service is pretty basic but they still pay attention. It gets very busy at lunch time and has been repeatedly been voted as one of the top Thai spots in Boulder. Insider tip: Order the fresh spring rolls with tofu. They're delicious as is the dipping sauce. read more

I don't get it. The good reviews must be fake, trust me. The yellow curry was beige water with sugar. Not even yellow, just beige water that is sweet. The jungle curry was simply clear water with sugar. No flavor, and why are the curry sauces watery and flavorless (except for the sugar). This is the worst thai food I have ever had. Pad Thai noodles was ok. Papaya salad was ok. But I just don't get why anyone would give this food anything more than 1 star. read more

Wow! The Thai food here was the best we have had since our travels in Thailand. Our dinners were The Vegetarian Red Curry and Masaman Curry. I've been eating here for years and while the food and service are pretty good when eating in, they are rude and the service is horrible when picking up a to go order. I ordered two entrees and a side and after paying for my order checked the bag and realized that they only put a single tiny container of rice in the bag that was to be split between the two entrees. I asked if I could get a second and they looked annoyed and charged $2.16 for another small container for the second entree. Splitting a small 3 inch by 4inch container of rice across 3 people for an already $30+ order seems ridiculous. Had they been friendly about it I wouldn't mind, but it seems awfully cheap to charge extra, and even though i didn't complain and hapilly paid for the rice, the rude attitude did it for me. Hope they enjoy the extra 2.16 because after years of dining here, this is my last order. read more

I live nearby this restaurant and order takeout frequently. While the food is usually quite good the service can be terrible. Tonight for example, I waited 15 minutes passed the scheduled time to receive my takeout order. After getting home, I realized that I did not receive any rice with my entree. I also noticed that instead of receiving a peanut dipping sauce with my fresh spring rolls, I received a cup of what seems to be chunky peanut butter. I returned to the restaurant to retrieve the forgotten rice. At this time I also inquired about the cup of peanut butter and was told that they had run out of their usual peanut dipping sauce and had substituted it with this. I told them that my experience tonight had been less than satisfactory and suggested that perhaps they could offer me a discount on a future order. I found this place a couple years ago and I cannot get enough of their panang curry!!!!!! It's my go-to takeout meal in Boulder, especially on a cold winter night. If I could, I would go here for lunch more often - their lunch special comes with spring rolls (as well as their complimentary soup) and the portions are still generous enough to have leftovers. I've been coming to Khow Thai for the past few years. I now live in Southeast Asia and eat Thai food almost everyday. Funny thing is, I found myself missing this little shop. At dinner last night here in Asia with some fellow ex-pats I was told about the cost of eating out in Australia. My friend says that when she is back home (in Austialia) dinner for two costs no less than $75USD, because they pay what it actually costs to grow and produce food. In reading some of the reviews I am connecting with the reviews of the staff and finding myself somewhat empathetic to the plight of Boulder's restaurant community and the type of employees available to hire in the area. My suggestion: Raise your prices a bit, your food is consistently delicious and fresh. Mainstream Boulderites should be requesting this of most of the restaurants in the area. We know how much food *should* cost. We are aware of the work and labor that goes into making fresh, yummy eats. If we are going to sing the praises of green living and farm to table everything then we need to start paying what food actually costs, or stop complaining when we don't get what we want. Perhaps this isn't the right venue for this argument, or perhaps it is. I do know that I will be grabbing some Khow Thai grub when I am in Colorado next summer and I will let the staff know that I appreciate the efforts made. And if I happen across a UCB student as a server, I'll be sure to tell them that I and many others appreciate when they try a little harder at their jobs! read more

I've eaten in Thai restaurants from Manhattan to LA, and never had better. Sat down and the waitress brought water and bowls of delicious soup, on the house. Small, crowded, had to wait (the owner brought over some spring rolls (on the house again) to thank us for waiting. The food is simply delicious. Can't ever get the spice right. Ever. I really want to like Khow Thai--the food is good and it's a nice, small restaurant in a central location. But try this: dine there with friends. Order different levels of spiciness on your dishes, from "not spicy" to "mild" to "american hot." There is a 90% chance they will ruin your food by making the wrong dish "american hot." Or by leaving the hot spices off altogether, so every dish is bland. If you order in and are patient, you can fix this by repeatedly sending dishes back until they actually read the ticket and apply spices as ordered. But don't ever order take-out or delivery because then you're stuck with their mistakes. We've eaten there for several years, and they can't seem to get better at this. It's sad because the food is generally quite good. But there are alternatives in Boulder for Thai food, and they will pay attention when you order things mild, or spicy. I went here for the first time this past Sunday and thought the food was very good. My cousin and I arrived around 5pm and grabbed one of the last few tables. After being in the sun most of the day and not eating too much, basically the entire menu sounded fantastic to us. I settled on the Red Curry and she the Pad Kra Prau and we split dishes to get a better sampling. I thought both had great flavor and the only thing I would add is more heat. In all seriousness, I would personally rate their "Spicy Recipes" (their term) as something that would be rated "low heat" at most other Thai restaurants. I asked for some hot sauce/sriracha and added a little of it to the curry although I will say I'm not a huge fan of sitting in a restaurant squirting colored sauce into whatever I happen to be eating in order to get the dish hot enough. Call me crazy...... The other Thai restaurants I have to compare are in Denver - US Thai, Tommy Thai's, Thai Basil & Swing Thai. I'd say the Red Curry at Khow is a close 2nd to the Red Curry at Swing Thai. I'd definitely come back here though and next time have one of the dish prepared hot/thai hot and see what happens. read more

One of my absolute favorites in Boulder. The food here is fresh and delicious. The menu offers a wide variety in Thai cuisine including soups, salads (the papaya salad here is by far the best I've had), a good variety of curry dishes (with the Panang as my personal fav) and great noodle dishes ( you must try the Pad Thai and the Pad Kee Mow). They certainly do not skim on the portions here and complementary soup come with all entrees. My favorite time to come is during lunch (11am-4pm) when they include the free egg roll as well. On the down side they are a bit pricey, especially during dinner. $2.75 for a small side of peanut sauce? come'on. Also, although I do love fast food, most of the time the entree makes it to the table before I've finished my appetizer, which can be a bit overwhelming. The service could definitely improve, in every aspect. read more

The food was nothing to write home about. We were excited because it has been awarded the best Thai food in Boulder, and we have been constantly disappointed by the Thai options in this town. We had a shrimp spring roll appetizer, and found it to be roughly the same quality as the ones you can get at Whole Foods, except the accompanying peanut sauce here was worse - thick, cloying, and fishy. I had pad see ew, my wife had veggie curry. The food was unimpressive and not any better than other places in town, which is a low bar. I discovered a long, black hair under the sauce at the bottom of my pad see ew plate when I was scraping the leftovers into a to-go carton. The waitstaff claimed that the guys working the grill had buzzcuts and seemed to imply I had placed it there because I did not discover it until the end of our meal. The hair did not match my wife, and there was an older woman with long dark hair (and no hairnet) clearly visible in the kitchen. They did not offer an apology or even send a manager over. One of my favorite restaurants in Boulder, eat here at least once a week. Order something spicy and specify mild/medium/American/Thai (beware of Thai hot). My favorite dish is the Khow Pad Sriracha with brown rice instead of white, beef, American hot. The Sriracha noodles are also great. I have friends that crave the curry. The soup is also magical. Service is hit or miss, depends on the day. Owners are nice and will always make it right if something goes wrong. The weekday lunch rush is crazy and seating can be hard to come by. I work nearby and have several coworkers that love this place too, so it isn't just me. I also have some that don't get why we love it so much, apparently it isn't for everyone as some reviews suggest. It is worth a try. read more

I still remember the first time I went to Khow Thai. It was years ago, the 2nd day they were open, and I was the only customer in the place at 1:30. The owners seemed to be the only employees, hesitantly giving me a dish while warning that it might be bad because they were still figuring out the recipes. It wasn't bad, it was amazing on that 2nd day and many days after, quickly becoming a favorite for everyone in the area. Things have fallen far in 10+ years. The basic dishes and recipes taste the same, but nobody is striving for that consistency and tastiness here anymore. I rarely go anymore, haven't seen the owners in years, and today was a great example of why. Today it was almost gross: the stir fry came out immediately and lukewarm. Yuck. Still a good recipe, but just not executed right. Everything was just a bit off, they are just going through the motions rather than caring about being the best anymore. The real problem is the cleanliness, the amount of dust on top things up high and the amount of dried pee caked all around the toilet makes me wonder if they even clean daily anymore. No soap, no paper towels either, both dispensers look like they have been broken for a long time. I've been visiting way less frequently over the past 3-4 years or so, but I think this was my last stop. When they first opened there was no good Thai food in Boulder, but now there are several, and Khow Thai is not keeping up. read more
