I thought the fresh rolls were very good. The rice vermicelli with shrimp and pork was just ok. (much prefer Bamboo Leaf in Santa Clara) But the service was excellent. Very attentive staff. I like this place. I have mix feeling towards this place even though I have been eating at this place since way back in the early 90's!!! (well... I'm normally a catfish in claypot fan, but this place pretty much only uses fish sauce when making it and it was evident in my order. After sending it back the waiter tried to tell me that "next time" I order it, they can tailor it to my salt preference. No thanks. If the chef made it right the first time, I'd consider coming back. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years but mainly (and strictly) for a few dishes: The vermicelli grilled pork and beef, the spring rolls and the broken rice dish (the last item only served on weekends). I tried to venture off my favorites and they tend to be disappointing. If you want a good bowl of pho, you need to venture towards east SJ since the broth and noodles here are so-so. The service is definitely more relaxing and friendly than some of the Vietnamese restaurants I've been to (where it's crazy, rowdy, loud) so it's a nice place for a date if you want a clean, chill environment. I give them 4 instead of 5 stars because I think the price is actually a bit much for Vietnamese food (being the frugal Vietnamese that I am) BUT I recognize I'm paying extra for more patient waiters and a cleaner environment! read more

Not your typical Vietnamese restaurant that I'm normally used to. A bit over-priced, very bland food, given very little veggies and terrible service. They even charge for hot tea! I left the place still hungry & unsatisfied. First time leaving a Vietnamese restaruant very disappointed. Worst of all, we paid twice as much as we normally pay to eat in a Vietnamese restaurant. For much better Vietnamese food, goto Pho Nam in Sunnyvale. It's more casual (the kind I prefer), much better food, service and get much more for your money. First time is also my last time there. Every time my bf and I want to have Vietnamese food, we always go to VungTau restaurant. For a while, we wanted to try something different so we decided to come here instead for dinner. - What we ordered: + Sampler plate for appetizer + Chicken salad + Banh xeo + Rice combo plate - Taste: + They all ok, not bad. I started going to Khanh's over 15 years ago. It's probably the first place where I experienced vermicelli plates, which I have grown to love over the years. While the service is good, the restaurant is large, clean and kid-friendly, I was shocked by the value of my recent meal. Not only are prices more expensive than other Vietnamese restaurants, but the portions were also much smaller. (If we're scoring on taste, taste was good, but that's not the basis of my review) With the recent cold weather, I had been craving pho, so I ordered a bowl of beef pho with tendon and brisket. Aside from the fact that the tendon wasn't tender, the size of the bowl was not the size of a typical $8.50 bowl elsewhere. I was ok with the portion while I sat at the table, but as soon as I walked out the door, I was hungry again and had to resort to eating a protein bar that I had in my purse. My brother-in-law wasn't filled at all. I think someone with an average appetite would probably need 2 bowls to get full. What happened to having a satisfying meal? I guess this is a better spot for an afternoon snack, than an actual meal. read more

Yuck. I come here once a year with work to celebrate like 5 people's birthdays - so not going isn't really an option. I'm biased because I don't care for the cuisine, but everything I've tried is just okay. The last thing I got a few weeks ago was the combination rice noodle soup. There is SO much potential with this soup. And then the blood lobster meatballs tarnish the entire thing and it's as though you're drinking the ocean. And I don't mean salty, I mean in a foul-fishy sorta way. I have an open mind when it comes to food but it overwhelmed the entire bowl. No amount of sriacha/plum sauce is gonna save it either. Speaking of bowls. Unless you're a 300lb hungry man, order the smaller one. Trust me, it's still huge. I will say the fresh spring rolls are growing on me. Mostly because you can't really mess up rice paper, lettuce, mint and some shrimp. Again, it's pretty bland - so ill douse some sriacha in the peanut sauce and hope for the best. read more

I love this restaurant. My family goes here at least once a month for Sunday lunch. All of their food is very authentic. It's great if you want some real good quality Vietnamese food with moderate prices. I usually order the Canh Chua (I think that's how you spell it), and it's probably the best Canh Chua I've had besides my mom's. The fish they use in it is VERY fresh. Everyone else in my family seems to love what they order here too. My brother loves their Bun Bo Hue?... and my sister who is a vegetarian loves their spring rolls and tofu dishes. All of their Che (Vietnamese desserts) are very good too. This place satisfies everyone's palettes. They also seem to have a fridge full of heavenly looking French and American desserts and treats too, but I've never tried any of them. I also love the location, right next to Santana Row. The place is also very clean, which is hard to say about a lot of Asian restaurants in San Jose. Don't expect it to have any asian decor though, it looks like it used to be a Dennys dinner turned into an Asian restaurant. hah. read more

Although this restaurant claims "authentic" Vietnamese food... it's bit far-fetched. It was so weird eating here because I felt so out of place. It looks like a diner inside (think Sizzler) but I'm eating Vietnamese food! I do must say that they had exceptional waiter service. My drink never stayed empty long. Now, if you know what regular Vietnamese service is (There is no such thing as Vietnamese service)... this place will surprise you. This is also the most expensive dinner I've EVER paid for Vietnamese food... $50 for two people. We each had an entree and shared an appetizer. We had the sampler appetizer and that was good -- except the spring rolls. I ordered Banh Hoi Tom Thit. I thought it was odd that they gave me rice paper to roll my food. Usually you eat this as a dish not in rolls. My boyfriend had Bo Luc Lac, which was very tasty and tender beef. So overall, the food was tasty. This is one of my favorite restaurants that I come back to eat all the time. A little pricier, but you can definitely taste where your money is going. Every ingredient is incredibly fresh and everything is just so well prepared and nom-worthy. I always get the combination firepot (shrimp, squid, meat balls, vegetables in a savory broth), and the do-it-yourself spring rolls. So delicious and fun! You dip the outside skin (which is hard and brittle when dry) into a hot bowl of water, and wait for it to soften (it's magic!). Then you throw on the mint, noodles, and grilled pork and shrimp... and then you stuff it in your mouth. I love the firepot broth. So light and tasty! For those of you complaining about the pho, this isn't really a pho restaurant. If you want cheap $5 bowls of pho, look for pho restaurants that serve cheap $5 bowls of pho. And on the subject of Khanh's noodle soups not having any taste... well, maybe it's because they don't put as much MSG as other restaurants. I've had pho in street stalls in Vietnam, so I know exactly what pho tastes like with NO MSG whatsoever. read more

Conveniently located across the street from Santana Row, Khanh's is a decent place to grab a bite after shopping. Upon entering, you might think you were in a Marie Calendar type chain with all of the booth seatings and fixtures that you would see in such a place. Vietnamese food here was decent but definitely not up to San Jose standards. I ordered one of the typical combo plates which included the broken rice, pork chop, shredded pork, and egg loaf. The pork chop was a little over done, very chewy. My GF had the Bun with grilled beef and shrimp which was also too well done. Pricing of the menu items are slightly high for Vietnamese food. I came here with my BF for a light lunch on a weekend. There were plenty of tables when we arrived at noonish, but the dining room quickly filled up shortly there after. The establishment is spacious and bright, unlike other mom-and-pop Vietnamese restaurants in town. We were greeted by very friendly host and waitresses. The menu is diverse, but we opted to share something simple and light; we elected to try their fresh shrimp rolls and pork chop rice plate. The portions of both dishes were perfect for us and satisfying. I would return in the near future to sample their Pho. Dropped by late Saturday. It was near closing time but we sat anyways. The owners are there so we felt comfortable and un-rushed. The service is really good especially compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. It is very clean too. I remember eating here at the old town and country when it was one of the first Vietnamese restaurants. Anyways, my sons had the beef soup (their favorite place for beef soup). I tried the asparagus soup, very good but after having my sons beef soup, not as flavorful. My wife had a combo plate with pork. Wife loves it here and brings the kids. On the contrary, if you are looking for ambiance & quality sit-down Vietnamese food - this is your place. What I have found most delicious at Khahn is their vietnamese rice, the appetizers and the selection of desserts. My favorite is the House special rice with chicken! After reading some of the reviews, I was hopeful. After eating there TWICE, I was disappointed. The first time, I had beef ribs, which were WAYYY overdone. Basically, charcoal-flavored. The second time, I had some sort of shrimp stir fry on rice noodles. I'm the kind of guy that clears every plate, but this is one I had to leave alone. Seriously, the noodles were crap and the rest was pretty flavorless. No reason to eat here again. I haven't tried many of their dishes because i'm addicted to their vietnamese special fried rice. It comes in a clay pot and has two chicken breasts, bits of sausage and mushrooms. I get the large and turn it into two meals depending on how hungry I am. I had a grilled chicken rice plate once but it wasn't that memorable. They ambiance is a bit nicer than your typical vietnamese restaurant so it's a good place to meet up with friends and chat comfortably while getting your vietnamese fix. I'm a big fan of fish sauce but in my opinion I don't remember it being that tasty. here I have a recommendation for a place with good fish sauce but I'll update that next time since I can't remember the name. First off, this place is very clean compared to other Pho places. The staff is very nice and friendly. It's always pretty busy so you know they're doing something right. I heard they got voted the best Vietnamese food in San Jose. However, the Pho isn't as tasty as other places I've been to. It's alright. The peanut sauce it pretty runny - seems to have a lot of soy sauce in it perhaps that is why. The BBQ beef is excellent. Overall it's pretty good. I keep coming back. Saw all the awards posted on the walls by the entrance and was stoked to have some good food. I ordered the lunch special with combination soup. The broth was very bland and had no flavor. Definitely the worst pho I ever had. I was expecting the combination noodle soup to come with steak, brisket, tendon, trips and etc... but it came with shrimp, ground pork, and slices of pork. My friend ordered the Chicken Noodle Soup. Same thing, broth was very bland and had no flavor. He also said the same thing and said he came make it 100 times better at home. Given Khanh's close proximity to Santana Row, this place is a hotspot for car burglaries. My car was broken into a few weeks back and they made their way into my trunk. Your car WILL be broken into even if no valuables are visible. The manager of the restaurant informed me that this was a regular occurrence especially during the Holiday season. I've been eating at Khanh's for at least 8 years, and I don't bother getting Pho anywhere else. This place is CLEAN and the owners are sweet and kind and always remember you. Unlike any other Pho place I've tried more than twice my tummy has never been upset after eating here, and everything is tasty and fresh. KHANH'S GARDEN RESTAURANT I've always been curious about this place each time I drive by Santana Row. With such an attractive name, it must elicit great food! As a fan of Vietnamese food and Pho, especially, I decided to one day try it out. At Pho restaurants, I'm always expecting dirty floors, rude waiters/waitresses, and lousy service. Khanh is none of the above: (1) it's clean inside and offers some nice ambiance, (2) friendly waiters who actually speak English, and (3) service was relatively good. The downside: way overpriced Vietnamese food and Pho!!! I'm not one to chow on a fancy-looking bowl of Pho with little meat and substance! Spring rolls were decent, though. For Pho-lovers, this is NOT the place to go; go back to the dirty places for a good bowl of Pho ^)^ If you're looking more for family style, Khanh's will probably fit the bill better. read more

I used to come here all the time when I was living in SJ. I always ordered the BBQ duck noodle soup. Each and every time I finished my bowl, I had a large smile on my face. Then I got the bill. The smile quickly turned into a large frown. How is it almost $10 for a bowl of noodle soup??? Sure it tasted like heaven but why??? Was it laced in gold or crack? Who knows. I came in to order some food for my wife ( just did C Section in the O'Connor ). The girl the the front desk took my order ( i ask her please try to get it asap). At first, she told me that it my took 10 mins. But if you in rush. I will do in 5 mins ( i just laugh , but be honestly i didnt believe it). I love Khanh's Restaurant. My family and I have been eating here since I can remember (back to the days when it was originally located in Town & Country - now Santana Row). I am Vietnamese and think that my mom is the best cook ever! When I am missing my mom's food, I come here. It is like a second home! If you haven't been able to tell from my review of Valle Sol in Downtown Sunnyvale, I am a creature of habit. If I find somewhere or some dish I like, I will order it over and over because I love it- crave it- and can't get enough of it! Winner dishes for me are: - fresh rolls - chicken salad - wonton soup - roasted duck soup with egg noodles - bbq pork vermicelli - Vietnamese chowmein - sweet and sour catfish soup - their specialty grilled shrimp and pork (beef alternative is good too) with vermicelli (an assemble your own fresh roll dish - fun interactive eating!)
