Gavaghans - Four whole wings per order

Gavaghans

I have to say, I loved the ambiance of Gavaghans. I am not entirely an Irish pub kind of girl, but…read morewhen you are in Rome you do what the Romans do, right? And in Sebring, that means you walk into the cool Irish pub on the circle and soak it all in. The interior alone makes it worth the visit. Dark wood, warm lighting, that cozy tucked-away pub feel that makes you forget you are in the middle of Florida. It feels transported. It is one of those places in Sebring that you just have to see because it is so unexpectedly cool inside. Service was great. I was there for a quick in and out, so I sat at the bar and kept it simple with a chicken Caesar salad. Nothing fancy. For the price, it was very fair, and the flavor held up. No complaints. It did exactly what it needed to do, which was give me a solid meal in a comfortable setting without overcomplicating things. Now let's talk about Sebring itself. Sebring is one of those towns in the middle of nowhere Florida where you find yourself thinking, "I wonder what it would be like to live here?" while also scratching your head a little. It reminds me of The Villages before The Villages became The Villages. There is a concept there. It is adorable. It is charming. And most of the time, it is very, very quiet. Personally, I would go stir crazy living there full time. But I can absolutely see the appeal. And to be fair, Sebring is not always sleepy. It comes alive during major events like the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring at Sebring International Raceway, which draws racing fans from all over the world. There is also the Sebring Soda Festival, the Highlands County Fair, and various car shows and seasonal events that suddenly flood the town with energy. During those times, I imagine the entire vibe shifts. If I were to come back, it would be for one of those big events or for some serious antique shopping, because that is where this area quietly shines. Gavaghans fits perfectly into that Sebring personality. Cozy. A little unexpected. Solid. Worth stepping into. Even if you are not an Irish pub person, it is one of those spots that makes you think, okay... I get it.

We sat ourselves at a table nearest a window. The place is dimly lit. We placed our order at the bar. We did not wait long for our meal. We each had the Cesar Salad with Bacon bits and a glass of red wine. The salad was a generous portion, fresh and crisp with just the right amount of housemade dressing. We each ate half of the salad and took the remaining home. The place was quiet with only one other table seated. We were able to converse with each other in a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere. It was a most pleasant evening. I recommend Gavaghans and plan to return on a weekend when the place might have a more livelier vibe.

This is an update focusing on my fine lunch so read my original review for more detail on this excellent chain. Customer service- I blew in intent on lunch to-go and moseyed up to the counter with no wait. The always smiling young lady efficiently processed my order and it was ready in about 5 minutes. Food- My go-to order here is usually three tenders with fries and slaw for $14 and change. A biscuit or role comes along for the ride. I brought this bad boy home and plated it up. That was supposed to be three tenders, but I think they went a little overboard! Now you see why I ordered the slaw. See my picture. As my cholesterol spiked in anticipation, a loosened my belt in preparation and attacked. Taste- OMG! Tender, juicy, white meat tenders with perfectly crunchy batter. Very good fries but they are consistently undercooked for about a minute. Fresh, crunchy slaw. It was several hours until I could write this update because I was comatose in my recliner! An easy 4 stars and probably 4.5. The minimal parking can get a little crazy and the fries need a little more time but that doesn't stop their legions of fans from stopping by including me. I think I'll survive until Christmas!

We have ordered takeout many times and it has always been cooked to perfection . Fries could be a Little crispier sometimes and the baked beans are very tasty. Price is really nice. If you like good Maryland Fried Chicken, this is the place to go in Avon Park and near by. Worth the short drive from Sebring..

OMG, it had been over twenty years since I had been to a DQ. Damn I'm old! A friend asked me to…read moremeet him here so off I went. ATMOSPHERE- It's well, Um, Er, fast foodish! This particular DQ was jumping at a weekday lunchtime and the vibe was very pleasant. Also, the place was spotless, I mean really gleaming. CUSTOMER SERVICE- Part of the vibe was due to the young lady at the register. She was bursting with joy! When she smiled at you, you couldn't help but return it. When she said thank you, she really meant it. This is one of those places where you get a number and your food is brought to your table. I grabbed my number, smiled one more time, and ambled over to our spotless table. FOOD- I was looking for something low calorie so I ordered the Chicken Tenders & Fries @ $7. A smiling guy delivered it in about three minutes. There must have been an invisible spot on my spotless table because he gave it an extra scrub before he departed. My chicken was moist and tender and my fries were hot and crispy and it was over all a delightful heart attack on a plate. I asked for honey mustard as a dipping sauce and they gave me enough to fill a swimming pool! Why do fast food joints do that anyway! So I was working through my tenders & fries and my cholesterol was building but little did I know I was about to uncover buried treasure. Under all those calories were two slices of buttered toast! Just what I needed, butter! So somebody at DQ headquarters thought this was a good idea. It must have been the guy that placed the cholesterol testing machine by the door as it cost 50 cents. They probably make a fortune! My dining partner thought his burger and fries were excellent. Despite me having a little fun with them in this review, we had a very nice time and will return.

OK, first of all, I'm a food critic. I worked in executive five star dining and I know several…read moreMichelin chefs. But, every once in a while, even a guy like me wants to order a delivery pizza. At first, I was told, "no" they would not delivered to me. Because I am 1 mile outside of their radius. The young guy I spoke with recommended instead that I called Lake Placid Papa John's which is ridiculous because I'm exactly 30 seconds south of Highway 98. I think the guy was just trying to pass the buck. However, I called Lake Placid and they also said I was outside their delivery radius and that made a lot more sense to me because it would be like calling Denver, Colorado and asking for a pizza to be delivered to Florida. So what do you do? I ended up calling the Sebring location back and asked for the manager. I got Lexi on the phone. That was the manager's name. She was a young lady, but she seemed intelligent and open minded, because when I explain the circumstances to her she said, "yeah that is ridiculous" I also explain to Lexi about how much money they were losing out on because they were not willing to extend their delivery radius to the entire Sebring area. They were missing out on business from all of the people south of HCA hospital now if you think about it that's a lot of people and a lot of money to be missing out on. The radius gap between the Sebring delivery area and the Lake Placid delivery area does not touch. This means there is a huge gap where they are missing all of the Spring Lake and all of the people who live just off Highway 66. Ridiculous! I mean, if I'm a business owner and I have a pizza business, I'm gonna make sure that I cover the entire Sebring area because I'm not about to miss out on money from people because of a 1 mile extra driving radius. Lexi went on to explain to me that she was going to go ahead and allow the delivery, but she also told me that she could not guarantee that every manager would make the same choice at Papa John's. I agreed that that was likely to happen and I understood. Now the pizza: there are a lot of pizzas in this town and a lot of these guys who make them are from New York City so you're not missing out on good quality pizza here in Sebring. I will say that most of the time the sauce is very acidic no matter where you go. Papa John's sauce, which I have not had in sometime, at least 20 years has a definite sweetness. It had a good aroma, and while not punched with herbs it did satisfy the palate in a balanced way. I enjoy the sweetness that they have in their sauce whether they slow cook the onions or just added a little sweetener to the sauce. both are fine it's a matter of taste. Italians will choose one or the other. They all typically use their onions to gain this type of exposure in the flavor by a quick sear and sauté of the onions to gain a bolder aroma, or a slow cook of the onions in order to sweeten them. We ordered the new New York style pizza, and while there is not a consistency in the two pizzas we received the first one was more New York style in the crust. Well, the second one was denser and the crust endings were not equal in size, thickness, or make, but for a commercial pizza, it filled the stomach. In this review, I am complementing the manager more than anything for her ability to deliver to us. You often do not see this in commercial businesses. They are usually very stoic and black-and-white on their terms. For Lexi to think outside the box and be willing to make a personal judgment was appreciated. She was a good manager, and she is being recognized for that purpose. You hardly see this ever so kudos to you Lexi, and thank you for being a good manager!
