Loved everything about Gus's! I avoid meat mostly, but I was…read morenot about to miss trying famous fried chicken! The restaurant is tucked away on a small, empty street. There is plenty of parking in a lot across the street. We went inside and found it to be pretty busy, but we got a table for 4 quickly. The place was clean and homey-feeling and I loved the fact that they used disposable plates, utensils and napkins! It is probably way easier on the crew to clean up, and it adds to the relaxed atmosphere. I had the corn nuggets to start, yum! We finished them easily, they were so good. Then the entree of my chicken tenders, beans, and Mac and cheese came out, along with my sweet tea. The sweet tea was perfect, I drank a whole one during my meal and they gave me another to go in the souvenir Gus's cup. The food was just great, chicken was juicy and perfectly crunchy on the outside. Beans and Mac and cheese, delicious! I ate all of it even though I was stuffed. I even went so far as to order a piece of pecan pie for dessert, but unfortunately our server came back out to tell us they were out of it! Guess it wasn't meant to be (this time)! Our server was really friendly during our whole meal, chatted with us a little and made sure we had a great experience! Bottom line.... Go to Gus's!

The place was a small building in downtown Memphis. Parking was limited in front of restaurant but…read morefree. The service was good. We were seated quickly and served quickly. The waiter was nice and attentive. He made sure we had what we needed and wanted. Seven is his name. The food was not world famous. The chicken was spicy and bland. No seasoning. The Mac and cheese tasted like boxed Mac and cheese with shredded cheese on top. The greens tasted like can greens not fresh. The best thing was the souvenir cup. I will not return. I gave it 2 stars because it was free parking in front of restaurant and the good service from seven.

Cook Out - 3 Chicken Strips. "Good" (NOT OMG) These definitely need sauce.

Let me start by saying, my son and I were traveling through Memphis and we realized it was getting…read morelate and even the late night spots would be closing (plus it was Thanksgiving eve). We hunted out for a place that was open after 1a, and found a Wendy's that added 14 min onto our trip. We get there 19 min before they closed and for 13 of those minutes, we did not move. No one asked to take our order on the speaker box and the line grew exponentially. All the while, I am looking next door at this Cook Out spot and their line had been making great progress. Bump it -- let's go! While sitting in Cook Out's line we peruse the menu. We become the next car to order so I roll down my window to hear the what the car in front ordered hoping to get a suggestion. The guy on the speaker (who I later learn is Steve) is giving thee most awesome service!! I turned to my son and said "no he is not giving 5 star service at 2 in the morning!" I order, and I get the same kind treatment! As we are at the window getting our food, he's taking new orders and gracefully telling a customer that he is unable to order that specific request given the proximity to closing but offered a suggestion he thought might be a good replacement. All while handing us our food and requests for condiments. I was uber impressed by him. The food was better than my expectations and we had a few lessons learned for our ordering preferences for the next time. Son does not like crinkle cut fries (I do though!) and he would have ordered double nuggets for his side opts. I would have gotten fries and corn dog. Burgers DO taste like those from a cook out. Great branding name!

So, to start, the parking is not great and they do not have a drive thru (which I am ok with). Walking in there was not much directions or clear signs on where to place your order and the employees did not try to help at all. Once I placed my order the process was pretty smooth. I order the bacon cheeseburger. It was made fresh along with the fries. The burger had a good amount of American-style cheese and crispy applewood smoked bacon. Choose as many toppings as you want. I had tomatoes, pickles, lettuce, and mayo. The buns were toasted. The burger was delicious. I hear a lot about the price, but I must say it was worth it. The fries are plentiful! I mean it's like they give you a whole bag to yourself and I ain't complaining..lol! The store itself is not a place I would want to sit and it. It wasn't clean and the staff are not friendly. I found a clean little corner and sat and ate, but it isn't a place I would choose to frequent. Cool spot. Good food!

Ambiance: on this particular day, less meticulously kept than you'd expect one of the allegedly better burger joints to be. Poor signage--it was less than clear where to order, where to pick up. We saw no reason to return.
