The burger was decent and the best item. The chicken wrap needed some type of sauce and it would have been better grilled and not fried. The "slaw" that we ordered as a side consisted of chopped cabbage AND NOTHING ELSE. There was no mayo, no carrot and it was less than tasteless. Let me start by saying, my son and I were traveling through Memphis and we realized it was getting late and even the late night spots would be closing (plus it was Thanksgiving eve). We hunted out for a place that was open after 1a, and found a Wendy's that added 14 min onto our trip. We get there 19 min before they closed and for 13 of those minutes, we did not move. No one asked to take our order on the speaker box and the line grew exponentially. All the while, I am looking next door at this Cook Out spot and their line had been making great progress. Bump it -- let's go! While sitting in Cook Out's line we peruse the menu. We become the next car to order so I roll down my window to hear the what the car in front ordered hoping to get a suggestion. The guy on the speaker (who I later learn is Steve) is giving thee most awesome service!! I turned to my son and said "no he is not giving 5 star service at 2 in the morning!" I order, and I get the same kind treatment! As we are at the window getting our food, he's taking new orders and gracefully telling a customer that he is unable to order that specific request given the proximity to closing but offered a suggestion he thought might be a good replacement. All while handing us our food and requests for condiments. I was uber impressed by him. The food was better than my expectations and we had a few lessons learned for our ordering preferences for the next time. Son does not like crinkle cut fries (I do though!) and he would have ordered double nuggets for his side opts. I would have gotten fries and corn dog. Burgers DO taste like those from a cook out. My first time here, but my third Cookout to try. Wow, you can't miss this place can you? It sticks out like a sore thumb! My meal here was perfect for what it was and service was fine. No problems on this visit. As I've said before, I judge this for what it is, fast food. I don't judge it the same way I do a restaurant that charges twice the amount. You get two sides here. Double burger, two sides, drink, and tax, for $6 and I still got a few cents back! How do they do it for these 1980's prices and still make it good? I actually like these burgers, keeping in mind it is fast food, and considering the price. It won't make my list of favorite burgers, but it would be the top of my list of $4 burgers. this place came in the clutch with the fact that it didn't close till 4:30am. i got the cook out tray, which is a choice of a burger, sandwich, etc along with 2 sides & a drink for $5. i got the cajun chicken sandwich with the hush puppies, fries & sweet ice. the sandwich was super good. definitely could taste the cajun seasoning in every bite with mayo that didn't taste like regular mayo. seems like it got some of the same seasoning as well, which wasn't a bad thing if that was the case. the hush puppies were REALLY good. slightly sweet, nowhere near salty. they didn't need any sauce (no sauce came with them). the fries were good as well, nothing special about them. they have A LOT to choose from when it comes to chicken sandwiches & burgers alone. one thing they're known for, are the milkshakes. the options take up almost half of the drive thru menu, i'll leave it that. didn't get one this time around, definitely would get one if i ever come back around. a plus about the place, the service was fast. the line was long, going out into the street to be exact. a couple of people gave up & drove off & they were definitely impatient, the line moved super fast. they're open pretty late throughout the week, i went on a saturday night/sunday morning, around 4am. read more

I really thought any place that listed grilled cheese as a side would be my new happy place, but I was wrong. The folks they have working in the parking lot seemed confused by the process. We had one person hand us a menu, another take our order, someone else ask for our order then repeatedly ask how it was possible someone else had already taken it, and another person scream shorthand for the wrong order to the inside crew. We then had someone at the window argue with us after we told her the order was wrong. She argued even after we showed her the receipt and the bag of food. I have to say the food wasn't worth the trouble. I had the grilled cheese, hush puppies, a cheese quesadilla, and onion rings. The grilled cheese was weird -- semi-melted American cheese between two flipped over hamburger buns. The hush puppies were just fried sweet cornbread with no seasoning to indicate their hush puppy-ness, onion rings only tasted of grease, and the quesadilla was meh. Cookout is a pretty unique fast food restaurant that caught my attention after moving here from Phoenix. I found it very fascinating that the menu had a pretty wide variety of interesting options and they have a massive shake menu too. I tried the bbq and hush puppies, and was pleasantly surprised by how tame the greasiness level was (I was expecting a grease ball lol). This was my first time visiting and eating their food. I wanted to know what all of the fuss and long lines were about?... Now I tried their double cheeseburger combo with everything on it. Although some of my extras weren't on my burger, the fries are plain, I guess if you order the chilli cheese fries, then they'd taste different. The cole slaw is runny and the strawberry milk shake was good... I personally was expecting the burger to have more taste then it did. I believe the service should be paid more attention to, fast is one thing, but customer service is most important. The food is reasonable, but I'll give them a second visit and try something else. However, my first experience was just very subpar. just a warning: the drive thru line goes out onto the street and causes major traffic. so i decided to try to park next door at the wendy's and walk inside. the line inside isnt much better tho, so be prepared to wait if you come here, esp during the opening season. +1 on them handing out paper menus for people standing in line +1 for having people outside maneuvering traffic, cars, and taking orders +1 for people being nice and explaining the system to the newbies +1 for the guy re-making my shake (even tho it came out wrong) +1 for having ample seating and table space inside the actual restaurant +1 for decor: i love the outdoorsy man fishing/bear quotes and hanging wall art -1 for making the actual menu hard to read, tilted at an angle, and you have to walk up near the registers to read the whole thing -1 for having only 2 registers that are super close to each other with not much space to breathe -1 for having a hand washing station located right next to the registers.. couldn't it be placed in a corner somewhere?? i love cookout in general bc of the quality of their food, taste, and how cheap it is. however, the only thing i ordered was a shake, which oddly came out after a ton of other people's hot foods. and then it was wrong, and then didn't taste great. meh. While visiting Memphis we decided to try Cookout as we heard the food was good for fast food. Our order was completely wrong. We got back to our hotel room and the receipt had our order but what was in the bag was all wrong. We took the food back and the manager would not give us a refund only food. We didn't want the food we wanted our money back. The manager threatened to call the police if we didn't we didn't get out of the drive thru. Horrible service! read more

So I waited until the hype died down and the line wouldn't be in the street to try this place. I have heard so many mixed reviews and was told the wait was so long. When I finally went, I was in and out in like 7 minutes. Not bad. So I was greedy. I saw that I could order a double burger with 2 sides that included items that looked like entrees for all of 4.99. Hmmm.... so I ordered the double burger with a chicken wrap and chicken quesadilla as a side and then upgraded to a peanut butter shake (I love all things peanut butter flavored) for $1 more. The good: The shake. Loved it and it was super thick. I couldn't drink it out the straw. The burger tasted similar to steak & shake so it was solid for me.
