As far as location, Bella Vista is about 6 blocks from the store in town, and the restaurants that were still open this late in the season (German restaurant and an American fare restaurant); Eagle Harbor and Delaware are nearby with the many great little spots. We had cottage 6, which appeared to be recently updated; paint looked fresh, new flooring. Cottage kitchen had a fridge and freezer, toaster, coffee maker, sink, microwave. Room had a bed, small table and two chairs, and a wee loveseat. Only problem we had: we arrived for check-in an hour after check-in begins--begins at 3pm, we arrived at 4pm--when we entered our room we could tell it hadn't been cleaned. The girl at the desk asked for an hour to clean the cottage; it was hard to drive for 8 hours and then not be able to stretch out and relax right away. That, paired with the tiny shower in our cottage, is what made this a 4 star review instead of a 5 star.

I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to detach themselves from the rat race. There is limited Wi-Fi only around the lodge area, and wherever you go beyond that, there is no Wi-Fi and no TV, which is actually completely detoxifying. I loved, loved, loved this place. We had gone in January in hope of seeing the northern lights, but sadly it was overcast and snowy the whole time. This is a "dark sky" location, so it was a bummer. The cabins are adorable. Built by the WPA in the 1930s, but completely updated with modern heating and bathrooms. There was a fireplace, a nice touch. The beds were comfortable and the space was clean. There was a small fridge and a microwave. They do provide simple breakfast, lunch and dinner that is included in the stay. If you want something different, there is a restaurant in town. There is a general store if you need extra snacks, drinks, etc. And Chef Wi will make a special dinner for you if you plan ahead (costs extra). She was so kind and attentive and made us feel welcome. She called us ahead of time to be sure we were aware of the dining options. Cross country skiing and snow shoeing equipment was available at no cost. It's too far away for us to go again, but it must be incredibly beautiful in the spring and summer.

Fresh carpet, clean well-lit bathrooms with modern fixtures, spacious rooms, good beds, and everything we needed to get us ready for a hard day on the trails. The tired old cliché "don't judge a book by it's cover" certainly rings true in our little world time and time again. There were dirty fingerprints all over the back of the door, sticky spray stuff on the walls and pictures, thick dust on the baseboards... The walls were thin, and the neighbors were loud (but not inappropriately so). There was supposed to be a "futon". There was a dirty couch I wouldn't have let my dog on. The positives: The mattress was newer (with flat, old pillows). There was a nice porch (with two chairs for three rooms to share). No front desk. Check in is in the bar, and check out is in the restaurant (which appeared to be a popular breakfast place).
