I am a first time home buyer and I went through 2 other unhelpful real estate agents before working with Kevin. Kevin is pleasant, great as he is responsive, and not pushing me to buy anything. I felt he was trying to help me and not to just score a quick commission. We ended up with an amazing property at a great price and I am quite satisfied. He even tried to negotiate down the price that we eventually ended up paying. He is easy to communicate with and ask questions. He is the type of person who you want to find, not somebody wanting to make a sale and move on to the next client. Whatever realtor/contractor/doctor/etc you use, try to read their reviews and find out more about them. There are a lot of people bad at their jobs who are going to be a drag on you. In general the thing I did not realize is how important it is to think through a house purchase. There are so many questions - house vs condo, the cost, location, condition. I strongly recommend thinking through this carefully. With another agent I almost bought a house (100% wrong location) and a condo before ending up with a great house that was what I wanted and needed. In my view a condo offers nowhere near the price appreciation and privacy like a detached house. Find a realtor like Kevin, ask a lot of questions, and know what you want and what you are buying. In the end you are responsible for yourself. It is going to be very important to your life. It probably would be better to read several small books on buying a house to have a basic idea of the process. I did not do this. Ask your realtor to speak to the selling realtor about the property you are interested in - I asked Kevin about this, he found out they had no active offers, and this really pushed me to buy this house. You have to be proactive - you are buying a house, and not a hamburger or even a car. Home buying should bring out the best self-advocacy part of yourself. You want to fight for yourself. In retrospect I am very lucky to have my current house and not having ended up in the wrong place - it was only through the goodness of God that I avoided a serious mistake. I think if you plan better you will avoid these pitfalls that could easily have snared me. Also when you buy think about what you would get when you sell. This will also make you think about negatives like nearby busy streets, rail lines, neighborhood quality, schools - all things that will make it difficult to sell. Go through the disclosure/inspection paperwork carefully. If needed during the contingency period bring in some highly rated contractors to see if there is a serious problem.
