I have been a patient of Dr. Stephens for 15 years, and have referred countless people to him, because there was a time he was a really good doctor. But over the last few years he has made many changes to his practice, all which keep raising how much it costs to be his patient. Now he wants you to pay $1800 a year, UPFRONT, just for the privilege of being one of his patients, meanwhile the quality of care had just kept plummeting. Nevermind that insurance doesn't cover that, or any of your other costs per visit etc. He says this is to allow him to focus on more patients, but what it means is it will allow him to focus on RICH PATIENTS. Because the rest of us that can't afford that are just fucked, and now after all this time building this doctor-patient relationship, we're on our own having to go find someone else. I guess I should have never referred anyone to him, and maybe he wouldn't have gotten such a big head. I'll know next time - if I have a good doctor, I'll keep that info to myself. read more

We have been a patient of Dr. Stephens for a few years. He is very knowledgeable and I was happy to finally find a good doctor near us. Over a year ago he was asking for $100 up front for him to remain our doctor. Because he was a competent doctor and we didn't want to have to find a new primary care doctor we paid. I saw him about 2 months ago and "renewed my subscription" my paying the $100 yearly fee. A couple of weeks later, I'm getting robo calls from him and letters in the mail stating that I will need to pay $1800 for him to remain my doctor. Yeah, no thanks. Now we are stuck having to find a NEW primary care doctor that fit our needs and rebuild that patient doctor relationship. I don't know why he took my $100 knowing full well he was switching over to this other system of making patients pay $1800. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Kevin Stephens for several years, I don't know exactly when I first saw him. I've been very happy with Dr. Stephens in general. He is a great doctor and really takes his time with patients. I believe he is generally very interested in their health and well being. However, I have had a couple of issues with his office and staff in general. Very recently there was an incident which has lead to the decision to find a new primary care/family practice physician unfortunately. My partner, who was also a patient of Dr. Stephens for the past few years, had a physical scheduled for a Monday at 3pm. Over the weekend he received notice that a court case associated with his job that he had been subpoenaed for had been rescheduled again. He was required to appear at 9am that Monday, same as his appointment with Dr. Stephens. He hoped he could still make his 3pm appointment but was told when he arrived at court that jury selection wouldn't even start until 1pm. He immediately called the office and informed the receptionist (Cindy) that he needed to reschedule due to the situation beyond his control and was told he would be charged a $75 missed appointment fee. He requested that she consult with Dr. Stephens as it seemed unreasonable to charge for a missed appointment when he called as soon as possible for something he had no control over. My partner called and told me what had happened. I immediately wrote an email to Dr. Stephens and sent it. I made a copy and hand delivered it to his office. In the letter I explained the situation and informed him that if he had indeed been consulted and agreed that the $75 fee was appropriate that we would have no choice but to leave his practice Later the next day Dr. Stephens called my partner and confirmed he had been consulted and said he didn't feel he could make exceptions simply because someone threatened to leave his practice. We were both astounded and furious. We couldn't believe with the long history and relationship we had with him that he would take such a stance and was somewhat arrogant about it as well. We completely understand the reason for the fee and that some people need to be encouraged not to constantly change or miss appointments. But there are exceptions and situations beyond our control which always should be a consideration. Neither of us has ever missed a scheduled appointment with him without 24hr notice and have rarely ever changed an appointment either. I truly believe the circumstances warranted without question the waiving of that fee. To be fair Dr. Stephens did finally tell my partner he would waive the fee, but the damage was already done. We are both changing primary care doctors for this reason and if you care about this type of thing being happening to you, I strongly suggest you NOT consider becoming a patient of Dr. Stephens. If you already are a patient, I hope you take notice and consider changing doctors. read more

I saw Dr. Stephens for many years and he's not only a great doctor, but a caring person. He's super busy but he really makes an effort to listen to and care for each patient, and appointments are always on time. My only complaint is this. I haven't been in to see Dr. Stephens for two years, partly due to my travel schedule and partly because, like many Americans, I have crummy insurance and so I only go to the doctor when I really need to. Lucky me, I've been healthy for the past two years. When I called recently to make an appointment for an issue that has just arisen, I was told I'd have to re-establish as a new patient. OK, fine. They're running a business, they have administrative expenses, they just sent a bunch of files into storage and would have to retrieve them, and I get that. I get that I would need to pay more for the initial office visit and fill out a bunch of paperwork. But they don't have any "new patient" appointments available before I leave town for four months, and despite the fact that I have seen Dr. Stephens for about 10 years prior to this 2 year hiatus, the nurse was not willing to help me out. Maybe there really is nothing available, maybe I just go to the back of the line because I haven't been in for a long time. I don't know. But I can't afford to wait four months to be seen, so now I have to look for a new doctor. I'd rather stay with Dr. Stephens but if I have to re-establish anyway and I can't get seen when I need to, I have to change. If you have the time to wait to be seen, I would recommend him. read more

After fighting with Dr. Stephen's staff for nearly six months about getting copies of lab work done in March, I was finally able to get it. I had to threaten to contact the State Board of Medical Examiners and the Department of Health and Human Services. Although all my bills had been paid, the front office girl tried to tell me I wasn't entitled to them. Sadly, the doctor probably has no clue his staff is so bad. read more

I love Dr. Stephens. He has a great bedside manner, he has great overall knowledge, his staff is terrific, and he's a good overall family doctor. He's flexible about treatments, willing to discuss options, and takes a real interest in your health. He doesn't run terribly behind the way I've seen many other doctors do (maybe because he stays away from HMO's), and if you're really sick, he'll find time to get you in. No waiting a week with strep throat or having to go to urgent care because your own doctor can't see you. Even when they're full up, they find time. I have to travel clear across town to see Dr. Stephens, but I wouldn't go anywhere else. He also has a great network if you need referrals to specialists. All of the specialists he's recommended have been as terrific as he is. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Stephens over the course of 20 years and I am so happy that I ever found him. I must say, the reviews below are correct in terms of a staff member but I happy to report that person is no longer there. Dealing with that person whether on the phone or in person was awful and I expressed my concerns directly with Dr. Stephens. If you are looking for a highly knowledgeable family doctor that truly cares for your well being, then go no further. Oh, and the rest of the staff is amazing now the one bad apple is gone. They are responsive, caring and enjoyable to work with. Jack is always the BEST!!! Dr. Stephens is a true hidden gem and I couldn't be happier to have him as my family doctor. read more

Dr Stephens has been my GP for a number of years. He takes the time to get to know his patients over the long term, and follows up on long term health issues. He *listens*, and asks questions about how you're doing. He takes the time to explain illnesses and health issues, how medications address issues and the side effects, and is conscious of the costs of treatments and medicines. His staff works well with multiple insurance companies, and they're willing to work with the drug plan's formulary to find a treatment that works. One thing that I like is that waiting times are at a minimum. You will be seen at your appointment time. His staff takes the time to remind you of appointments. Dr Stephens and his staff are always in a positive mood, their office is extremely nice and well kept. read more

Avoid this doctor's office at all costs. I made the mistake of designating Dr Stephens as my primary care physician and had the unfortunate experience of being turned away on several occasions when I was pretty sick, I was pushed into services I didn't need or want, and was extorted for cash after their office made a scheduling mistake and refused to own their error. It's unfortunate when a physician is so clearly singularly fixated on petty cash and has no regard for their patient's health. read more

When I was looked for a new GP I was searching EVERYWHERE. I soon realized, people do not review their doctors online. I mean rarely if they are good, and even more rarely if they are bad. After almost 6 months of searching, researching and asking everyone I knew about their GP, i found Dr. Stephens. Not only does Dr. Stephens work wight by my house, but he is smart. He listens carefully, and speaks to you like a human being. He is aware of holistic practices and doesn't make you feel dumb for practicing them. His office will get you in very quickly of you are having a serious issue. The nurse and front office staff not only remember you, but genuinely care about how you are feeling. They return phone calls! They refill prescriptions quickly! I mean, really, I could go on and on. I am so very happy with my experiences here. While I would prefer to rarely have to go to a dr, having one I can trust makes the experience a much better one. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Stephens for approximately 15 years. My (now) adult children and their spouse(s) also see him. I am a scholar in a health-related field and my children, also scientists, are well-informed. All of us feel that Dr. Stephens is the best. Echoing other reviews, I would describe him as an excellent listener (not easy for a busy practice), highly intelligent, energetic, and caring. I am confident that when my children or I visit his office, we will receive the best possible care, whether the issue is minor or potentially life-threatening. A few negatives comments on this site have mentioned that office staff or office policies are sometimes problematic. Regarding staff, I have been with Dr. Stephens long enough to know that while he has had a couple of staff members that are not optimal, once he recognized the problem, he got rid of them. At present, everyone in his office is the best - professional, friendly, and caring. Regarding policies, the downside of the office being a stickler for requiring that we show up on time to appointments or pay is way overcompensated by the upside - knowing that your appointment will be as scheduled. As a busy professional, I get really annoyed when medical offices treat my time as if it has no value. Due to the slightly strict policies pertaining to scheduling at Dr. Stephens' office, you know that you can actually count on seeing him when scheduled, and you can plan the rest of your day accordingly. It is hard to put a price on that. If I had to do it all over again, I would absolutely choose Dr. Stephens to handle my health care and that of my family's. We are grateful. read more

He is one of those docs that actually listen to you and works with you to help solve your medical problem. His office can usually get you in quickly and refills are a cinch with them! I have been of patient of Dr. Stephens for 20 plus years, I don't really want to say exactly how many because that dates both of us! But far from a being a cantankerous curmudgeon - he still exhibits a youthful disposition and a keen focus on each individual patient. Yes, he has very strict rules about cancellation - but you gotta understand - he runs a very lean practice which allows for the individualization you get - something virtually impossible to find anywhere anymore. He is not subject to others who would override his own best practices and have them supplanted by what some corporate wonk felt was best for them or "you." In his early days in Central Austin I would share the waiting room with a few other folks because as he started out he shared office space. I followed him to the Northwest location and the first thing I noticed was how small but well appointed the waiting room was. This is the key - his practice is thriving and if you get in as a new patient - count yourself lucky, you will rarely see anyone else in the waiting room. You are not subjected to all the other sicknesses cycling through because patients are moved into examining rooms shortly after signing in. It is lean, efficient, and expectations of patients are clear. From some other reviews I guess he does not suffer fools gladly. He is smart enough not to go down a rabbit trail of exceptions to policies because word travels and that lack of consistency would harm his practice. I don't know about you - but I sure do like having a doctor who is principled and consistent. read more

The lady in the front office is the absolute WORST to deal with was sarcastic and made multiple mistakes which included appointments that I was later charged $50 for missing. Dr. Stephens seemed pretty good to me but I will not go back to his office due the the quality of his staff. read more

I was referred to Dr. Stephens by some trusted friends. He's a great GP with a very friendly staff. I always feel that he listens and truly cares for his patients.
