I moved out of Bakersfield but every time I visited, I had to make sure I go to this place. This time I brought my friends who also live in bigger cities, but everyone ended up falling in love with this place and couldn't stop talking about it. I'm so happy that they moved from the food truck location to a nicer place and more central to the nicer part of Bakersfield (near riverwalk) . My friends who I took to this place, still rave about the food they had here. It's so authentic, delicious, and just special. You ordered at the counter, and during lunch time there are options to get the lunch combo which are two types of dishes with rice or naan. I usually chose the usual, either tikka masala, butter chicken, or curry. But this time I wanted to try something I never got from the menu, which is the Shahi Matar chicken. Oh.My.God, it was the bomb! It's sooo good. The other thing that I always got was the veggie pakora. It goes sooo well with the curry dishes. Amazing. Services were pretty fast, around 10mins of wait during busy lunch time. If you didn't finish the food (which they give you really good portion), they have the lids for everything and ready to take home. Everytime I go back to Bakersfield, I always ensure to come here and bring my visitor friends here too. I already miss all the food here.

The samosa chaat was a perfect balance of crispy, tangy, and spicy, and the kids absolutely loved the mango lassis - refreshing, and not overly sweet. The two bibis preparing the food were especially kind, loving, and welcoming. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel like we were enjoying a home-cooked meal with family. If you're looking for excellent vegetarian Indian food, this place is definitely worth a visit. Great food, generous portions, and we'll definitely be coming back!

We were not happy. Then a gentleman came out from behind the food truck and offered to help us put on our spare tire, and even loaned us two chairs. We were blessed by his kindness. The smells from the food truck were simply amazing, so we had to try some roti and butter chicken. We were now happy! We decided to get more roti and butter chicken for later. We also got goat curry, white channe, palak paneer, and paratha. Oh, and rice! Everything was fresh, fragrant, spicy and delicious. An eclectic mix, but all so good! We were happy for days! And thanks again to the first gentleman for his kind welcome.

My GF loves Indian food and extra spicy, but for me it's not a usually a top choice. JBV however is completely different. I'm only in Bakersfield a few days a month but I always try and squeeze in a meal at Jay Bhavani because the food is outstanding. The flavor and texture of each dish is dialed to perfection and the quality is consistently top notch. The servers are always friendly (shout out to Nirav) and they give helpful descriptions/recommendations if, like me, you aren't super familiar with the wide variety of dishes they serve. My favorites are the JB Special Dosa and Vada Pav (great for eating on the go) The food is always made to order and fresh. They also have beer on draft or glass bottled soda (the good stuff) to wash it down with. My spice tolerance is relatively high, but they do offer many dishes mild/no spice by request for those that can't handle the heat. The digs are humble so you won't mistake this place for fine dining, but the important stuff (THE FOOD and SERVICE) are right up there with the best in Bakersfield.

A terrific introduction to Indian street food in BakersfieldI recently discovered Jay Bhavani…read moreVadapav, and it was one of those meals that leaves you thinking about it long after you've finished eating. I tried four dishes--the Bombay Vadapav, Exotic Vadapav, Mixed Vegetable Uttapam, and Mango Lassi--and each offered something distinctly different. Most importantly, every one was genuinely delicious. The Bombay Vadapav was probably the dish that best captured the appeal of the restaurant. The combination of the crisp, savory potato fritter, soft pav, and layers of spice and chutney creates an impressive amount of flavor and texture in something deceptively simple. It is quintessential street food: unfussy, intensely flavorful, and immensely satisfying. The Exotic Vadapav took that experience in a different direction and was equally enjoyable. I particularly appreciated the contrast of flavors and textures--it made the dish feel less like a variation on a theme and more like its own experience. The Mixed Vegetable Uttapam was another standout. It had that wonderful balance of a beautifully browned exterior with a soft, tender interior, while the vegetables added both texture and freshness. It was substantial without being heavy, and the seasoning allowed the individual flavors to come through. And then there was the Mango Lassi--silky, cool, and wonderfully fragrant with ripe mango. After the more intensely seasoned dishes, it was an ideal counterpoint.I also love the concept of a restaurant devoted to this style of food. Rather than ordering one large entrée, you can explore several preparations, compare flavors and textures, and turn the meal into a little culinary tour.Everything I ordered was excellent, and I left feeling that I had barely scratched the surface of the menu. That is always one of my favorite signs of a great restaurant: when you finish your meal already making a mental list of what you want to try next.Jay Bhavani Vadapav is definitely going on my Bakersfield food itinerary. A wonderful find for anyone who appreciates flavorful, distinctive Indian street food.
