I always look forward to catching up with the front desk staff, and I am never without a full beverage and a good conversation from the moment I walk in to out. Over the years I've worked with a handful of KK stylists who not only consistently crush working with my hair (record-breaking confidence alert), but will also teach me how to style and maintain my hair once the salon sparkles have washed away. I also love that I never feel sold but educated to make informed decisions. We talk about angles, lengths, routines, hair care, and products - and I never feel sold or pressured into anything. I have seen a massive transformation in my hair in the last five years, and I owe that all to these stylists. It's worth every penny and minute invested. Although each stylist is unique in their approach and rank (junior/senior stylists), as a client, you can see that regardless of those factors you are getting a dedicated, quality experience with real people who are passionate about what they do. Really liked this place, at first. Then as business improved, the atmosphere changed and I felt like they looked down upon anyone over the age of 30 something. My stylist hated it when I would ask her to cut a bit more off or do something differently, but the worst was when my daughter went in for a very expensive hair color treatment and her stylist gave her the wrong color, then got offended when I called back to rectify it. Love this salon! I've been a client of Kenna's for almost 7 years, and followed her when she opened her own salon a few years ago. I cannot recommend Kenna enough. She has kept me feeling confident in my hair through a career transition and into motherhood, always helping me decide when to cut, when to grow out, when to switch things up, and making sure I have what I need to keep it healthy and styled at home. Her years of experience and expertise do command a a higher price point, but she's conscious of my budget and upfront about costs. What an unbelievable salon experience I had here! I had kept hearing about this salon, and passing by often. It's very appealing on the outside and super beautiful on the inside. The boho theme is very comforting! Instantly when you walk in for a service your greater by the kindest salon assistants, that offer you a drink while you wait. They are all so friendly and welcoming! I personally didn't work with either owner but I have heard highly great things about both Kenna and Lauren! They are both very friendly to every guest that comes through the doors. I did work with Taylor Leonard, she was fabulous!!! My hair was such a mess and she brought me right back to life! She is newer to the salon, but I so highly recommend her. She took her time and made sure I was comfortable with everything she was going to do! The salon does free consultations also. I have never felt less of a "customer" and more like a "friend" when I was in there. I so appreciate this place! As for prices, it's a luxury salon..you pay for what you get! I wish I could give a better review, I really wanted to but unfortunately I didn't have a great experience. I booked my first appt with Janessa who I was referred to by one of her clients. My first time here was about a month ago for a haircut and that was okay I guess. I felt like Janessa didn't want to work with me and seemed very uninterested in anything I had to say. Which is not the norm for me. But I liked my haircut and I had been wanting to do something different with my hair so I booked my next appt hoping it was just an off day for her. I try not to hold anything against anyone because we all have days ya know? It probably had nothing to do with me. My next appt was today for a tone and styling. I arrived a couple minutes late (7 mins to be exact) as I was trying to scarf down my breakfast in the car and when I walked in my stylist wasn't finished with her previous client so I asked if I had time to scarf down the other half of my sandwich and they said I could grab it and bring it in. Then my stylist sits me down and tells me bc we're short on time she either can't blow dry my hair or she can't tone it. I explained I already got a haircut from her a couple weeks ago (she didn't even remember me) and the main reason for the appointment was to tone. And this is my first time changing anything with my hair color in a very long time so I was already a little nervous but excited. And I definitely didn't want to walk out with wet hair not being able to see what it looked like all put together. I started to get really anxious about the whole experience and felt a lot of pressure to change the plans in a split second and she blamed me for being late when she was running behind as well. I still had to pay for my appointment so I spent over $100 just to leave in tears, filled with anxiety, and disappointment. And with the same hair I walked in with. Not a great time and unfortunately I can't recommend Kenna Kunjo. :( read more

This salon is an absolute dream! First impressions were beautiful, the most tranquil space! Super clean and picturesque. What's even more impressive though are the wonderful ladies working inside. I felt as if I'd known these girls forever the first time we met, they're all so personable and fun!! Lauren did an absolutely amazing job on my poor, abused hair and educated me as she worked. Walking into Kenna Kunijo is like stepping into a beauty oasis - it's peaceful, calming and relaxing. I personally work with one of the owners, Kenna, but every single stylist is AMAZING. Kenna has totally transformed my hair from blah to beautiful brunette. I've even done a Keratin treatment with her so that it is less frizzy in the summer. She is very careful to only suggest what I need right now for my hair and i feel at home in her chair. She is top-notch. Taylor, Krista and Cait have all blown out my hair to perfection. Now I just need to sit in Lauren and Larissa's chair! Oh, and Krista did my hair for my wedding, need I say more?! Do not get extensions here. Never written a review in my life but this was so bad. I paid well over $1700 to get 22" extensions. Not only could you see one of the wefts, but within the first two days they were falling out. So much so that the metal part of one of the extensions was dragging on the back of my neck and soon after my hair was completely matted. I followed every single direction they gave me (conditioning only on the ends, using the extension brush, wearing my hair in a braid when I slept/worked out, silk pillowcase, etc). I was in the process of moving so I took the first salon appointment I could find in my new city who did the same type of extensions and they said it was the worst installation they've ever seen and I had lots of hair loss. The new salon even made a tik tok about how to not do extensions using my hair as an example and it went viral. I called Kenna Kunijo multiple times about this and they kept saying it was user error and insisting they installed it right. Even though this was my first time getting extensions, I'm pretty sure my hair shouldn't matte within the first two days, especially with proper care. I asked for my money back just on the installation and they said no even though this was an extreme situation. They may try to defend themselves again on here saying it was user error but it absolutely was not. I'm giving this salon two stars because I've gotten my haircut here and it's been great and they were very accommodating with scheduling. But DO NOT GET EXTENSIONS HERE!!! So many better places to go with more knowledgeable staff. read more

I got my hair cut and colored by Krysta yesterday and it's safe to say I'm in love with my hair! Krysta listened so well to what I was hoping to achieve and asked a lot of questions to make sure we would get there. The result was a really natural and blended fresh look for summer! I got my money back I was treated with no care for the damage to my hair & to make matters worse instead of walking out feeling good about my hair. I was made uncomfortable during my experience. Kenna messed up from making my appointment to even being professional. I will write a review bc that's my voice I've already emailed you and you & you refused to fix it after me talking to you about it for days. I was left with anxiety from my experience. They finally agreed but at that point I was horrified. I'd like to let it be known that instead of the right thing being done I was told I'd be charged to fix Kenna mistake. I was manipulated to feel that I couldn't be right bc she's been charlottes best hair stylist. I told her this isn't like the picture. Kenna said verbatim I like I think it looks good and I'm not fixing it so if you want me to add low lights I will have to charge you I was embarrassed by the tone spoken in front of other customers. I've provided pictures of my hair in low light & in daylight after she messed my hair up. Also a picture of how damaged my hair is. The picture I showed her as the example of the color I wanted. She said she gave me what she told me she would but what I don't understand is why you didn't give me what I ASKED for? What you did was give me the wrong color and damage my hair. I would like to start off saying that Emily is fantastic and knows her job. Kenna and her front desk staff are unprofessional and rude. They hide behind texts and arrogance (problem #1) A lower level girl did my hair bc I had to move my appt because of a cancer biopsy and take this girl or wait 3 months (problem#2) problem #3 the owner made me feel like it was my fault. She even proceeded to tell me her salon was like celebrity hair salons in LA. She at first told me she'd fix my hair no charge. Then her staff sent me a text saying put a card on file. Why I already paid. Then sent me another text cancelling my appt bc I didn't put a card on file. So I'm guessing they never had any intention of fixing my hair that they ruined. It's a shame bc Emily is good at her job. Highly unprofessional with no personal touch. Save your money there are better salons with friendly owners and front desk people. read more

I want to start off by saying i don't like rating businesses based off of a few visits but i have been a client of Laurens for over a year, so i feel like i can state my experience with her honestly. My first few visits with Lauren were magical, she was able to provide me with the services i need when it came to purchasing hair extensions, but when it came to things that i noticed and didn't like i made sure to politely let her know which followed with her pushy responses and constant pressure from her to ignore my family and friends about how they felt about my extentions not matching my hair. I had to push and push to politely convince her to just dye my hair all one color to feel like it was one piece. She was upset and still tried pushing me in directions i wasnt comfortable with, and when i came in for my move ups id leave with my hair braids falling apart looking horribly. I started to feel like she didnt care about the over all service she was providing for me and instead wanted me out. I trusted her with my hair so i listened to her advice. I still gave her my opinions on things i wanted her opinion on, like dying my hair but i was ignored for all of my requests. My final straw was my last visit with her, i came by to pick up the remaining extentions she had left for me from the previous installment. (I called the week before to ask to have a few more pieces put in that she had kept and was told she didnt feel like my hair could handle it, and i unserstood.) I came by for those few pieces, she kept around 6-8 pieces. I was handed a bag and a foil pouch with my name on it. Got to my car to find honey brown LONG hair. I have short sholder lenght black hair. So i came back and returned the pieces that did not belong to me. She looked again and reassured me they were mine. I agreed i guess they could have been from my previous purchase, but she kept 6-8 pieces. She told me she didn't keep any and i was confused. I told her i had called the week before to have more put in and have messages between us comfirming this as well. So i asked again what she did with the hair i had trusted her with and she didnt take it well. She kept repeating your not remembering it right you didnt have any left. And i stood my ground letting her know i watched her walk away with pieces, just to be called delusional. After she listened and realized i was right, that i had called and i had asked when she walked away with my hair extentions she changed her story. She then stated my hair was in bad shape and she had desposed of them, kept saying it was only three. As a client that trusted her with my hair i would have liked to have been told that she was throwing away my hair. I asked her to acknowledge that she had made a mistake and she refused to do so. I just wanted the wrong to be right. I would have liked an apology instead she kept saying i was disrespecting her and that she WOULD have liked to help me but she didn't feel like that was an option. (She was right, how could i trust her after that, also she stated it in a condensing way as to say i absolutely wasnt going to recieve her service.) She had me escorted out. If i could rate her service id give her zero stars. Be bold and beautiful. Find someone to do that for you. I was ignored and made felt little. I always tipped and tried really hard to be polite. But every time i had a visit coming up i got anxiety, she always made me feel uneasy with some of the things she'd comment to me about my hair. I want to also mention i gave her a day to call and apologize. BUT THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. read more

They said it is my fault I did not get a text reminder - you would think a courtesy call or something for such a critical important. Just because this place has good decor and Instagram presence doesn't mean it's a good business or nice people who are willing to be reasonable. Personally for me it was a horrible experience. Kenna bleached my hair & it didn't need it for the 2 shades lighter I wanted to go. I brought in a picture of a models hair. I lost more than 1/2 of my hair. I felt dismissed & she told me unsympathetic that she didn't make a mistake she's been doing hair for 17 years that I must be wrong. even tho my hair DIDNT look like the picture of the BROWN hair color I asked for. I also asked 9 other women if my hair looked like the picture they had deer in headlights eyes as none of them thought it was close. I got blonde hair I was mortified BLONDE To make it worse she said she wasn't going to fix it without charging me around 150 to put low lights. When she messed my hair up & completely damaged it. She even made a comment saying that I needed to cut off 3 inches or else my hair would all fall out after what she did to it. Turns out I still lost more than half of my hair thickness. I cried for weeks. I felt stifled by how she spoke & treated me. I was told that her excuse was she told me she said she would be giving me fine highlights. I said I thought that meant thin highlights like the picture I showed you. she laughed at me and said no that's baby highlights. Newsflash I didn't go to cosmetology school you did so YOU understand this. Besides the point I didn't have highlights she turned my entire head blonde with 2 inches of brown roots. It looked like I had regrowth already. I was so upset about my hair I sent emails of pictures to prove she had in fact given me the wrong color hair. Showing her other picture of the model that day of the color I had Asked for. I was then accused by Kenna of sending her picture of the model with different hair colors. Till I sent her the link THEN all of the sudden they are offering to fix for free but by then omg as a customer it's absolutely incredulous & Detrimental. I told her forget it I was filing a claim with my bank that she didn't handle it professionally & my bank sided with me after I sent them several photos. Honestly I feel like her ego got in the way of doing the right thing. Had she fixed it instead of dismissing me. She would have her money & a positive review. Also wanted to say that when I had made an appointment. They never asked for my phone number. So months later I call them to move my appointment to find out it's actually scheduled the following day. I said I had no idea. Bc I schedule it for the 14 NOT the 6th I think the receptionist made it for the wrong day. They said you should have received a reminder text from us. I said well I didn't they didn't believe me. Then they threaten to charge me for the full amount of my appointments bc I didn't cancel. I told them again never received a text letting me know. I was so upset bc they weren't being nice about it. I spoke to the manager who didn't believe me. It wasn't until I ASKED what number they had for me. I didn't recognize the number so they put down the wrong number & the wrong date!!!! for me. I called back spoke to the manager who apologized but told me not to tell anyone About their mistake. She said don't talk about it when you're here. It made me uncomfortable bc why wouldn't you want Kenna to know I didn't really get the text bc it makes me look bad? I never understood why she said that. what what I never received a text letting me know. This is not about what happened to me but I also want to say that While getting my hair done. Kenna doesn't like animals, dogs or cats. I was telling her I rescued a cat & she made a grooms face saying eww I don't like dogs or cats. Her employees chimed in saying ya Kenna hates animals. Kenna has a disgusted face when she tells you this. In the back of my mind I have a hard time trusting people that don't like animals. I was a client of Lauren's back when she was on her own and have not been able to find a salon that compares where I live now. I was so excited to make an appointment at her new salon. As soon as you walk into the boho-chic Kenna Kunijo salon, you are greeted with a warm welcome and a beverage of your choice. Then the stylist (in my case Lauren) will breifly speak with you to understand your hair goals, lifestyle, and frequency that you want to visit the salon. Then she and her assistant will work their magic. At other salons, my experience with balayage is that it can come out looking unnatural or similar to chunky highlights. The color and placement at Kenna Kunijo is very becoming and natural. I am never disappointed and always get compliments. The other thing I will add is that this salon is constantly training their staff, learning new techniques, and teaching pop up classes around the city. They love to perfect their craft and to share that knowledge. While I live in Charleston, I will definitely be returning to this salon for my next appointment. I chose Kenna to be my wedding hair and makeup artist based on the recommendation of my photographer. At first, I was a bit nervous about it, because her website only showcases photos of light skinned women with straight blondish hair. I am middle eastern, darker skinned with curly black hair, and I wasn't sure if she knew how to deal with my type of hair. However, she was really sweet and accommodating on the phone when we talked, so I went for it. I have to say that I am very very happy I did. Kenna made me look absolutely beautiful on my big day. I looked in the mirror and couldn't believe that was me. I have never looked so lovely, and I don't expect that I ever will again! She is very experienced and works quickly. I had a fancy up do completed in 40-45 minutes and it looked like something she would have spent 2 hours on. She is also very professional, responsive, and was punctual and ready to deal with various requests. She also gave me tips on what I could do as part of my own makeup routine to bring out my eyes a bit, etc. I only wish that I lived in Charlotte so she could be my hair dresser full time. I am seriously considering having her cut and style my hair at least once or twice a year when I come back to visit my family. read more

Having Kenna as my hair stylist has been a GAME CHANGER. She's incredibly talented, and on top of that- the perfect balance of friendly and professional. It's nice to be able to enjoy your hair AND the time spent in your stylist's chair. She takes into account my comfort level and personal style with cut/color and I always trust her input.
