In LOVE! I mean there is nothing greater than feeling good AND looking good. I made an appointment with Salon 42 after my friend recommended them and checked out their reviews on Yelp. I knew I was in for a winner. Well, I was hopeful. I haven't always had the best luck in life finding the right beautician for my hair. After my friends recommendation and reading the reviews on Yelp, I checked out their website. They have different levels of hairstylists and I went with the Master. I was willing to spend more to help ensure that I had at least a good visit. I walked into Salon 42 and was promptly greeted. Maybe after 10 minutes or so, Jason introduced to himself to me. I admit I was nervous. Because while it is hair and it will grow back, I was looking to chop off lots of hair and get ready for the summer. So after sitting in his chair and pulling my hair out of the bun, I explained to him what I wanted and told him I was open to suggestions. He was supposed to be the Master after all. I told him I wanted a long bob with bangs, but he suggested no the bangs that way we could focus on the length that I wanted the bob to be. Okay, I said and that was that. He left so the girls could wash my hair and upon his return - he slowly warmed me up. He was very friendly and didn't let my aloofness turn him off. He quickly snipped off the majority of my hair and I don't know how long I was actually in his chair but it seemed like only minutes. It was like watching Edward Scissor Hands but he just was so natural with my hair. By the time he was finished, I was smiling ear to ear. Literally. My hair was beautiful! I looked amazing and my hair had me feeling like a million bucks! I told Jason, if I could start my day off in his chair every day - I would be set for success. I just cannot believe he is in Charlotte doing our hair when someone famous or rich, should have him all to their selves. He is that good you guys. I really didn't want to write this review because the people here are so nice. But my hair got ruined here. I came for a balayage. My hair wouldn't lift so the stylist left the bleach on for a LONG time especially under the heat. My hair was fried afterwards but I didn't think much of it. Fast forward the next few weeks it was breaking off so bad. I used good salons sulfate free shampoo, deep conditioner, and olaplex and it still was breaking. I had to cut almost 5 inches off. All of my long hair is gone:( I would not recommend any of my friends or family to come here, and I deeply regret choosing this salon. read more

I am always wary of getting my hair cut. And since moving three times in the last five years, once I find one I like, I move. Being from Hawaii, I thought about going to Mahalo or Ohana, which are near my place. They have names of home and I figured they must be owned by someone from Hawaii or someone who could relate to the culture. After diligent research and perusing yelp reviews, I discovered that I dare not step into these places if I valued my hair. I found Level 42 and although it was 25 minutes north, it was well worth it! I was immediately greeted and offered something to drink. I asked for water and got it in a glass and not a paper cup, which, I thought, was a nice touch. I was scheduled with Kerri U. and she was fantastic. My husband tagged along and provided suggestions to Kerri to ensure I did not cut my hair the same way.... which I know I needed to change so his presence nudged me in the right direction. They have both individual sections and open chairs for other stylists. I liked that Kerri had her own section. Loved that all she had to do was swing me around for a wash and swing me back for the finishing touches - cut and blow dry. We chatted and the conversation felt genuine which made me feel comfortable. I have had some hair dressers chat and it feel forced.... I hate that. Since we are new in town and to this area (Dilworth), Kerri provided several eateries and bars to try. She even took a few minutes to write them down for us. I love my hair and so did my husband. She did a perfect job. And although they have a closer location, I will continue to come to Kerri. When I paid, I received an unexpected $10 off.....score! We met the owner, Cara, on our way out. She talked about how she started and that they now have three locations. Cara and my husband chitchatted about marketing (his passion) and she mentioned they have a program if you refer someone then, they AND you, receive $10 off. Smart program and encourages repeat customers. You can tell this is a top notch establishment and all workers were on the same page of providing excellent customer service! And yes, I asked about the name and it's from the book/movie Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, pretty creative. read more

I still really love coming to Salon 42 to visit with Erica P. She is so thorough and precise and asks just enough questions to see what it is you are wanting that day. I typically get two different blonde hi lights and a cut, sometimes mixing it up with some red. For my wedding hair last year, she topped my gorgeous blonde mane with a peach glaze that looked perfect in my wedding pictures and even better on the beach on my honeymoon. She even custom dyed a hair piece I wanted to wear on my big day. Above and beyond! This time I got a dip dyed sort of look with a custom reddish pink blend and I love it lots. Sarah Jarvis at Salon 42 has been my stylist for the past year. Let me start this review by giving Sarah some accolades: 1) she is an amazing hair stylist, 2) she is a really great person who truly cares about her clients, and 3) she can carry on an engaging conversation for the roughly 2 hours it takes to color and cut my hair every 8 weeks (that is a pretty amazing feat). I honestly can't say enough great things about Sarah... if you're in the market for a stylist who is a great colorist and can do some pretty fab up-do's... Sarah's your girl! Now, on to Salon 42 itself... Salon 42 is located in the same shopping strip as Ru San's (which is my favorite sushi spot in CLT) and has ample parking. The location is in the Dilworth/Sedgefield area nestled in that little nook where Kenilworth and Scott converge with Park Road. The space is inviting, super clean, and I really like that there is a sink at each station (for some reason I've never liked having to walk across a salon to have my hair washed... yes, I'm sure that makes me picky). Salon 42's prices are comparable with other salons I've been to in Charlotte, it's definitely pricier than Super Cuts -but your hair is the one accessory that is with you every day, so it's worth the investment. I love how welcoming this salon is. Everyone is super nice and make you feel welcomed. Thanh is my stylist and she definitely listens to what I want. She was able to lift my hair beautifully in the healthiest way! I had died my hair black and thought I could never go light again. She reassured me that it is possible and was extremely patient with me and my hair and was able to get me back light after a few sessions and my hair is still so fluffy! I'll start by saying I am one of those people that is VERY particular about my hair. My morning routine consists of 30-40 minutes for my hair, 5 for makeup and 5 for outfit. So you can imagine how seriously I take my stylist. I want some who knows how to cut hair, but also is a pleasure to be around for an hour. I've had stylists that I have left before because they were too chatty or judge-y about what products I use. I found Sabrina a few years ago by luck after someone else in Charlotte completely butchered my hair. She has always done a great job on my long hair. I've had long hair for 10 years so I was one of those people who wanted very little to change - my preference was that you couldn't even tell I had a haircut. And then recently I got fed up with it all and decided I wanted a lob (a long bob for those of you living under a rock). I called Sabrina on Thursday and she worked me in on Saturday. I brought a few pictures, with me and she told me what would work and what wouldn't based on the texture of my hair (it's fine, but there is a lot of it). Within 30 minutes she had completely transformed me! It was everything that I wanted and more, and I'm happy to say that it's now a full month later and I love it even more. She's an artist! I have received so many compliments that I've already given out all of the business cards she's given me. Melissa was wonderful and she did such an amazing job. She truly did a wonderful job. I went in for a partial highlight. When I called I was told just any stylist BUT WASNT TOLD THERE WERE LEVELS. Not to mention they didn't say they always add gloss. Which was an EXTRA charge. The stylists are wonderful but whoever schedule my appointment needs to be clear in how their are levels of stylist. I expected an $82 + tip style today. It ended up being a $155 + tip style. I am beyond upset with how I was treated since my young age probably didn't help me any when talking to the front desk about what had happened. I clearly complained and recommended they make it more obvious to budget friendly customers like me. Make sure to ask the right questions when trying a new salon!!!!! read more

I recently relocated to Charlotte and one of the top things I needed to figure out was finding a stylist to give me wonderful experience at had back home. I talked to many friends and co-workers and searched Yelp. I finally took the leap and wound up at Salon 42 with Sara Jarvis. This was a 1000% perfect match from the start. First it is the establishment itself. The stations add privacy and the washbowls are even right there with no moving! I was offered a beverage and was made right at home. But Sara brought it home with the consultation. She knew exactly what I needed and really listened. She discussed with me razor vs scissors and what NC humidity could do to my hair that I didn't have to worry about up north so she did some techniques to ensure that wasn't an issue. My hair is so beautiful. I cannot wait to go back in 3 weeks for my first Balayage treatment, and trust me it's not just anyone that i let color my hair but Sara made that kind of impression upon me. read more

It's slightly cheaper than some of the other salons I've found. Like most salons, they offer wine! I booked an appointment online with Veronica. She did an amazing job and gave me the volume I was lacking by adding in some layers and face framing. Only issue I had was the inability to cancel an appointment online so I could book another day. Honestly not too impressed. Had some unevenness with my hair prior to coming in. Told the girl to cut whatever she had to to make it even. The layers ended up looking worse then my hair was before. Was very disappointed this place wasn't at all what the other reviews made it out to be. Maybe I needed a better hair dresser, either way I wouldn't waste my time or money again here. She took great care in taking my really dark almost black hair all the way to blonde. My hair is still healthy and my cut is gorgeous. She is an artist! Currently sitting with a baseball cap on after coming out of Salon 42 with +$230 (service plus tip (because i'm not a monster either)) worth of services on Wednesday. Paying for what was supposed to be an "advanced" stylist which I look like I just walked out having my hair done by a student at a cosmetology program at a community college. Mind you they could have probably done a better job. Now I have to deal with streaky and chunky "balayage" more like highlights and hideous front pieces for the next couple of weeks till I restore some health to my hair before I get it colored again. read more

The girl completely fried my hair with the bleach and put a toner in it that made it the EXACT same color as when I first walked through the door. I was looking for a new place to fix an unfortunate cut & a friend recommended Salon 42. I called right away and was able to make an appointment with Melissa for a couple days later. I'm really impatient & bad at planning ahead for hair appts, so love when you can schedule last minute at places. It looks like an old barber shop with old school chairs, which I liked. I got in the chair right at my appointment time and had a quick consult with Melissa. She had another stylist come over to consult on how to fix my haircut & I was out of there in less than an hour - maybe even 30 minutes. I absolutely love getting my hair done by Sara Jarvis. She knows exactly what I want and never disappoints. I know when I'm in her chair I will be taken care of. There are many times I go in and her washes have almost put me to sleep (those head massages). It's a relaxed atmosphere and there is always someone around to take care of you with something to drink or ask if you need a magazine to read. I have done so much to my hair from fashion colors, highlights, balayage, to just regular root touch ups and I always feel pampered from the time I arrive till the time I leave. If you are looking for blonde highlights, I won't say stay away, but really ask questions before they assign you a "designer". I told her I wanted my hair to be brighter than what I came in with. What did I leave with, hair that was completely over processed (she removed foils in 3 phases) and then completely over toned to counter it, finishing shades darker than what I came in with. Also prepare to be in the chair for more than 3 hours without a cut. read more

Cute place, HUGE mirrors at each station, which I love and Melissa did a super job for me! I just needed a wash and cut of and inch or 1-1/2 inches and Melissa just cut one inch first. Kool!! My hair is fine but ultra curly so the extra step of 1" first was GREAT. Beforehand Melissa listened carefully to my hair's condition and problems and she completed an easy wash, cut and scrunch. I've been going to Sara Jarvis for 3 years, and I can't believe I've never sung her praises on here. I was tired of my former stylist, so I called Salon 42 after reading all the great reviews. Instead of just sticking me with their most expensive stylist or the newest one, the receptionist asked me all kinds of questions about my hair, my needs, etc. Then she matched me with Sara - genius. Sara always takes the time to talk to me about what I want and explains everything she's doing (or plans to do), which seems rare based on my stylist history. I ask her the dumbest questions because I know literally nothing about hair, and she's awesome at answering on my 3rd grade girl level. When I got married, Sara suggested Thanh. I'd never met her and didn't do a consultation - that's how much I trust Sara's opinion. Needless to say, my wedding makeup was flawless. The salon is comfortable and modern, while still being intimate - I never feel like cattle being herded through. Parking is easy with a dedicated lot for the salon and other businesses. Stephanie was absolutely incredible - I had been thinking about making a change to my style, and she literally read my mind as I was pulling out pictures to show her. Even then, she made sure that I was comfortable with the change every step of the way!
