We had reservations for 5 people at Gus's Crab Shack on Father's Day at 3:30 PM and unfortunately…read morehad one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. We ordered our drinks, one appetizer, and all five meals at the same time. Our sodas arrived quickly, but then the problems began. After 45 minutes, only one meal (a crab cake platter with fries and coleslaw) arrived. A second meal came out around the 60-minute mark, followed shortly after by our appetizer. At that point, three people at our table still had not received any food. After waiting an hour and a half, we asked to speak with Gus because our waiter, who genuinely seemed to feel terrible about the situation, was unable to get answers. Gus explained that one of their cooks had not shown up for work. While we understand that staffing issues happen, there had been no communication about the delay and no effort made to address the situation before we raised concerns. Gus told us the manager, Rebecca, would come over and take care of us. Unfortunately, that interaction made an already frustrating experience much worse. When we explained that we had been there for 90 minutes and only two of the five meals had arrived, her response was, "What do you want me to do about it?" When we pointed out that three people at our table still hadn't eaten, she replied that she "understood what we said the first time." The conversation felt dismissive and unprofessional. We asked for the check for the food we had actually received. Rebecca said she would bring it, but never returned. After waiting another 15 minutes, we finally got up and went to the bar area ourselves to request the bill. Our waiter saw us and quickly prepared it. Despite the excessive wait, the poor communication, and the fact that three members of our party never received their meals, there was no discount, accommodation, or acknowledgment from management. Staffing shortages happen, and delays can be understandable. However, poor communication and dismissive customer service are not. Our waiter did his best under difficult circumstances, but the management response ensured that this Father's Day dinner ended in disappointment. Unfortunately this is a local restaurant for us - we will not be back.

The appetizers were great, my only negative note is I wish the soup was hotter esp with it being a bisque. There were nice chunks of lobster in it though, the salad was well dressed and refreshing and the fried goat cheese was piping hot and served with a marmalade which was delicious. For mains, I ordered the pancetta wrapped cod and Star got the gnocchi. The gnocchi was delicious and pillowy, the tomato confit was quite salty on its own. My cod was well cooked and very flaky, I wish the pancetta was crispy. It seems like the pancetta was just wrapped around after the fish was cooked which I found odd. The ratatouille underneath was well seasoned and delicious. Our server was super sweet and attentive, the service was great.

It's a pretty cool place - a large open bar and restaurant on the left, and a liquor/beer store on the right. On this visit, we sat at the bar for an hour or so. The girls working there were very sweet and talkative. I liked the openness of the place, but my husband thinks the bar area should be separated a bit from the restaurant area - I mean, not totally closed off, but maybe a half wall or something to define the spaces a little. The food was pretty good. We ordered fried pickles and ate those while we there - they were good but we prefer a little less breading and thicker pickles. I definitely like the slices over whole spears, but theirs seemed a little thinner than typical hamburger pickle slices. To go, we ordered the cheeseburger with candied bacon with a side of mac and cheese, and an additional side of the smashed potato salad. The burger was great and the candied bacon was delish (I could have eaten a whole pile of it). The mac and cheese was good too. I was a little disappointed in the smashed potato salad though - sorry, but it just didn't seem like "potato salad" to me - it was straight up just their smashed potatoes with boiled eggs in it. Anyway, I adore potato salad and was intrigued enough to try it, but I don't think I'll be getting it again. Overall though - a nice place that I'm sure we'll be visiting again soon.

It wasn't busy on an overcast rainy Thursday, and the staff took great care of us with brief history lesson and tips on what to see and do while in town. The weather kept our walking to a minimum, but what we saw was pure Americana. Lunch was also very good. We shared a new recipe for Brussel Sprouts that was delicious with bacon and balsamic mixed throughout. The tart, slightly bitter, mildly sweet composition hit the spot. Too, we shared a fresh Rockfish Sandwich, that was thinly coated and fried with something like aioli spread across the top, with pickles for contrast to the white fish filet. Tasty. Right beneath the back porch in what appears to be the basement, was the Hole in the Wall Bar, right next to another larger dining room that opened out onto a small patio for better weather, and just beyond the wide canal. We checked it out, but it wasn't quite ready for customers at that hour. If you enjoy American history in a picturesque colonial setting, check out Chesapeake City and Bayard House. Its unassuming charm is captivating.

The crab bisque was $16 for a cup. It was gray, mostly tasteless, and the crab pieces were microscopic. Definitely didn't taste like crab bisque. It was more like something out of can. The oysters came and their shells were huge, but the actual oysters were tiny. And they didn't taste like oysters -- I actually wanted to add salt because they didn't taste briny at all. We finished with the BLT, which was great. The tomatoes were beautiful and red all the way through, the bread was fresh, and the bacon was cooked perfectly. It definitely could have used more bacon, but overall the BLT was good.

Looking through the glass panes in their door at the bottom of the steps leading to the back yard and C & D Canal, it appeared that the lights were off and that it wasn't open for business at 3:00 p.m. The door wasn't locked, so I opened it to step inside to try for a better look. It was then I saw a woman behind the bar who appeared to be setting up for business. She also saw me and asked if she could be of service. I asked if the place was open? She explained that it was, and she would be happy to make me a cocktail, however, they rarely had customers this time of day midweek, and that if I was hungry the restaurant above would certainly be happy to take care of me. The conversation continued briefly as she explained the two businesses had a common owner and shared a kitchen with a slightly different, but mainly overlapping menu. The large dining room next door was shared, although there were several tables in the shadows as well as a few barstools. The darkness seemed appropriate; like a cave where many things could be hidden from view and likely to instill a sense of secrecy and even conspiracy, for example, a perfect stop for the Underground Railroad or a speakeasy during Prohibition. Realizing I was taking up her time, and that she had better things to do than listen to a stranger's fantasies, I excused myself and exited the door I had just entered. She smiled and nodded, as she continued wiping the glassware in preparation for the night's guests.
